Partitioning ruined windows booting
I have installed windows using Bootcamp, but then I created more partitions using Mac OS X.
Now I cannot boot into windows again. The partition is there, but it won't show up when I hold (Options). Only the Mac OS shows up.
I went to System Preferences->Startup Disk and selected Windows to boot, and still won't work.
How can this be fixed ?
Macbook Pro
Mac OS X Snow Leopard
Windows 7 Ultimate.
Happens all the time.
There is a limit to where a Windows boot partition can reside and all the side effects of making changes. ... because you assumed it would work and went "outside the draw by the dots" lines in the Boot Camp Guide.
http:www.apple.com/support/bootcamp has link to PDF guide and support articles.
this is one case where the results are almost always failure. And plan on what to do, when it doesn't work so you can restore - something that even using Mac OS should be seen as mandatory and not to be taken lightly.
"I created more partitions" doesn't help or tell anyone how (shrink, split, expand, used commercial program, used gpart, used a linux tool), as well as created HFS volumes? more Windows NtFS volume? Apple will only say that Boot Camp Assistant is the only supported method to create a Windows partiton (Paragon CampTune can also) doesn't change anything.
Did you use iPartition? I wonder if CampTune can redo/undo.
Clone Mac HFS and undo those changes. Use OS X DVD and Disk Utility as well as any of the programs to clone Mac.
How To clone
Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy
Windows OS has to be on #4 or less partition number (and GPT and HFS as well as EFI partitions have to be accounted for as well, and Windows 7 will normally create its own 100MB "System Reserved" (which is the active boot partition for Windows).
Backup beforehand. Then you can restore and recover.

(SOLVED) Dualboot Windows + Arch Linux (Windows boot partition)
Hi,
I have 4 partitions.
sda1: Windows boot partition (ntfs) - This has always been there
sda2: Windows Installation
sda3: HP_Tools - I need to keep this for warranty
sda4: Arch Installation
I want to use GRUB to have a dualboot option at startup. Do I need to install GRUB to the boot partition which is NTFS, this should be ext3 according to the tutorial.
Or can I just install grub on the Arch installation in the /boot folder?
Thanks already!

Then you didn't install grub to the MBR. Don't forget, installing the package isn't enough, you actually have to install grub to sda as a separate step.
So
# grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda
# cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
and then
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I forgot the installation ... I'm trying it in half an hour, thanks already for you help guys! -
Moved my mac over to a new HD and my Windows Partition no longer boots.
Hello people smarter than me. I seek knowledge and skills I do not posses. I replaced my SSD with a bigger one going from 240gb to 960gb. The old one had two bootcamp OS partitions (Mac, Windows) and four partitions (EFI System Partition, Recovery HD make up the remaining two) I added a third (5th) partition that I labeled scratch (ExFat) that I intend to be a bulk storage for assets. Currently it will boot MacOS but not Windows 7.
My end goal is:

Resizing Windows Partition - No Longer Booting
Whenever I attempt to setup a Windows/Linux Dual boot I get hit with this same dilemma. I start off with a NTFS format partition with Windows XP on it. As soon as I resize the partition, it no longer boots. Even before installing linux/grub. I defragmented before attempting this, and I took every precaution. In the end, I'm never able to boot my Windows OS. I can boot Linux from the Grub menu, and I can still access my Windows files.
As of now I've reformatted back to Windows. I would just like to know what went wrong because I want to attempt another install later on.Ward,
windows is weird in that it notes somewhere the block numbers where the system is installed, and when that moves
it does not boot anymore.
Now you are making life more complicated then necessary: if you still have windows resized and installed (and not booting),
you can use the windows install cd and go into repair mode. It will fix the resized windows.
If you are starting from scratch, before installing windows, start a Linux live CD, do not install it, start the program
"gparted" and partition your disk as you want it. Then install windows in one of the partitions.
Instead of the Linux live CD you can also use a Gparted stand alone CD:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
Hope it helps.

How to restore Windows boot after resizing system partition ?
I have an fairly new HP Pavilion 14-n228ca notebook which I intend to use mostly for Linux, but still wish to occasionally run the WIndows 8.1 that it shipped with.
I installed CentOS 6.5 using the dual-boot procedure I have used many times in the past with XP and Vista, viz. resize the main NTFS filesystem, delete the partition and recreate it smaller at the exact same start byte.
Normally (on XP,Vista) Windows boots from GRUB, but here I get an error "file \Boot\BCD - missing or contains errors"
F9 at boot gets me a hardware boot menu, where I have a choice of "OS boot manager", EFI file, or "notebook hard drive". The last gets me GRUB. The first drops me to a repair menu where I can try autorepair, which fails, or a command
line.
The command line allows me to run diskpart and assign a drive letter to the system partition, at which point I can run chkfs successfully and access files.
If I try "bootrec /rebuildbcd" it finds one valid volume at \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HardDiskVolume4\Windows but then says "system cannot find the file specified"
How can I restore the ability to boot the Windows partition, preferably without messing up the Linux one ?I have an fairly new HP Pavilion 14-n228ca notebook which I intend to use mostly for Linux, but still wish to occasionally run the WIndows 8.1 that it shipped with.

assuming your recovery partition is still extant, you can run that and go back to factory

Boot camp how to delete osx and merge partitions for windows 7?
Im installing windows 7 through boot camp but without a dvd. Im using a installer from my university. I can only install it on a partition becouse i dont have the disc. It is done over the network. I have tried deleting the mac osx partition in windows and expanding the windows one, but osx is on the left of windows so it will not expand. Is there any way possible to delete osx and expand a windows partition to the entire drive? i know its not possible in windows but mabye some third party tool. I would preffer it to be free but anything is less than the 200 dollors i would have to spend getting another liscense.
Thanks again for replying, but I dont think you understand. I have boot camp assistant and all drivers installed. I will explain a little further why i can not do xy&z. This is my installations process.
1. I go to campus and plug in my computer to the schools ethernet.
2. Login to the university's server and download the university's custom bootcamp installer.
3.My university's custom installer creates a partition on my mac and images that partition over the network with windows 7.
4. The whole time ive never seen a dvd, iso, or microsoft, apple anything. Its all done automatically and i have no option of downloading the image myself and doing it manually.
5. I create a account and password in windows and im stuck with windows on a partition on my mac.
So as you see above i dont have a dvd to pop in my computer or the ability to create one in order to delete the hdd and install windows only.
I need a way of deleting osx after windows is already installed. Becouse osx is to the left of windows in windows disc management this is(for all i can figure) impossible with just a repair disc, disc utility, and windows disc management. Im looking for a possible third part tool that can accompilsh this.
I even tried making a image in windows and re imaging with a repair disc, Low and behold, windows recreated the evil partition with a 190 unalocated gigabites of space to the left of windows. i wanted to pull my eyes out. -
Cannot access Mac OS Partition from windows 8 running in boot camp
So I installed Windows 8.1 Pro through Boot Camp but I can't access the Mac OS partition from windows even though boot camp partition shows up while I'm on Mac OS. I have installed all the drivers from apple but still it didn't work. Then I downloaded Paragon HFS+ which was free for windows 8 and 8.1 thinking that this would solve my problem. The instructions told me to change the drive letter for mac partition from disk management by right clicking the drive pressing "change drive letter and path" button. But the "change drive letter and path" key in grey color and I can't press it. Can somebody please help?

How do I restore data to a new mac with windows boot camp partition?
Hi
I have a new iMac and an old MBP, I'd like to copy all of the data of my old MBP to the iMac.Would doing that affect the windows boot camp partition?
and how do I do it?
right now im backing everything up on my MBP using super duper
both the MBP and the iMac are running on LionI am assuming the Boot Camp partition is on the old MBP and that the SuperDuper clone is on an external drive and is bootable. The Super Duper clone does not include the Boot Camp Partition.
To get the Mac Data moved you can use Migration Assistant and if you want to transfer the Boot Camp partition you would need Winclone to move/copy it to a newly created Boot Camp partition on the iMac. The SD Clone ( and a Winclone backup) is your insurance policy if some kind of difficulty arises.

How do I create a Boot Camp partition with Windows & blank NTFS partitions?
I'm trying to create this kind of setup:
OS X partition
Windows 7 partition
blank NTFS partition (no OS)
blank NTFS partition (no OS)
This would be much easier if I created just the OS X partition and the Windows 7 partition with the Boot Camp Assistant tool (done this many times before successfully on other computers). The problem begins when I try to split the Boot Camp partition through the Windows 7 DVD partition manager during setup by deleting the Boot Camp partition, and recreating three partitions from the unallocated space. After installing Windows 7 on one of those new three partitions, I'm getting all kinds of startup errors when I try to install the Boot Camp drivers.
What would the best way to achieve this setup?Yes, I researched many options for three partition dual boot set ups. After many trials and tribulations, there is a simple method that I have used on multiple MBPs.
1. Run Boot Camp Assistant, as per the Boot Camp Installation and Setup Guide. Once you have Mac OS X and Windows 7 set up, check the partitions and back them up (with Time Machine, and Winclone).
2. Get iPartition, and resize the Mac and Windows partitions to what you want, say 100GB each, and set up your other partitions to the size you want. I put mine "after" the Windows partition, at the end of the disk, and have had no problems. It takes a few minutes to create the bootable CD for iPartition, but you get everything you need to do so from Coriolis Systems. You will need your Mac OS X installl disc.
3. Install Paragon's HFS+ for Windows and NTFS for Mac, and everybody can read and write everything.
4. I have both Time Machine and Norton 360 back up the Data partitions, just in case -- to an external drive, of course.
You can boot to either OS and access any partition. -
Could I reinstall OS X partition keeping the windows boot camp partition?
II have a OS x partition that need reinstall. In the same hd I have a Windows Boot camp partition. The question is, could I reinstall OS X partition without affect the Windows partition?
Thanks,
Jorge.Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Of course you should backup both.
Q: why do you think OS X needs to be reinstalled or something?
Disk directory trouble?
Because 3rd party disk utility can do better, as well as maybe clone Mac volume so you can boot and do more repairs.
Or maybe the partition table is shot. Or bad sectors. And bad sectors can require a full format.

Mac Mini won't boot to Mac after partitioning for Windows 7
system:
Mac Mini, late 2009
Intel
4 gig ram
500 gig hard drive, brand new
OSX
Mtn Lion with Mavericks just installed, runs ok
problem:
Adding 90 gig partition for Windows 7, now won't boot to either Mac or Windows
After a little bit sticky install of Mavericks, I had the thing running fine. I downloaded support sw onto the USB drive as per Bootcamp instructions, and started going through the wizard to install Windows 7.
First try: "error" while creating the partition. I ran the Disk Utitliy, Verify Disk, found an error, ran Repair, it fixed the error
Second try: it started making the partition again, and then apparently just zipped through the partition making real fast (it finished so fast I could hardly catch it), then shut down in an apparent restart (as it's supposed to?), and from then on it won't reboot all the way. I get about 15 seconds of gray screen, the Win 7 disk jerks a little, then screen goes blank and silence. No hd activity. Tried restarting with all the usual key combinations (Command-R, "X" key, Option key, etc, etc). Nothing will bring the Mac login screen up again.
What gives? It is such b.s. for this stuff to be so flaky. This is all totally current software on the Mac side, running fine for days, and an apparently ok partition created. Fix me, Apple.Got it. Thanks for the help. Isn't there any boot disk thing that I can just stick in there that will jerk the OS sideways and give me the Mac login screen, or did the Bootcamp/partition attack just wreck everything? I don't see why I have to do an entire scrape of my totally updated and formerly working OSX just to retry a routine Bootcamp partition, which the girl at the Mac Store in Seattle here assured me has worked for them all the time. It really is a crock. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying to put Windows 7 on there at all if all these latest versions are so flimsy. I wouldn't want to have to do it all again. But it looks like I'll have to at least once. And send Apple the bill for my wasted time. I ain't feelin' the glamour.

I'm running Lion - 10.7.2. Boot Camp Assistant fails to download drivers - that issue has been going on for some time, and has been reported by others as well.
But that answers your question. You get the drivers by using BCA to download them. Your inability to download the drivers is a separate issue than not being able to use your wireless keyboard.
While some people may have issues downloading the drivers, many others have successfully downloaded the drivers. I have downloaded them fine on several different Macs. It may take a long time, depending on the speed of your internet connection. Mine took over 3 hours.
Regardless, you need to download the drivers using Boot Camp Assistant. Try again, and if you still have problems, start a new thread and provide as much details as possible to describe what your seeing so that we don't have to go through this back-and-fourth, and you'll get your answer quicker. -

Ok Great,
Will installing Boot Camp drivers allow me to both read and write to the OS X Volume from windows?
This is important as if it will it means i can make the windows partition a lot smaller and keep all my files on the OS X partition which would be preferable.

No, OSX will be read only (from Windows) and vice versa. (you can install 3rd party utilities on either or both partitions, to make read/write possible) -
Messed up Windows Boot Partition Installing Linux
I have rEFlt installed and I had put the Windows 7 x64 RC on my 13 inch MacBook Pro. I shrunk the partition and installed Ubuntu alongside it and now when I try to boot Windows it tells me there is a corrupt file in the BCD (which is the windows boot sector). I have this problem a lot messing with partitions so I stuck the RC in my computer and booted it and when I tried to access the repair tool it said this computer's install disc doesn't match the Windows installation (it's the exact same disc, I tried the Vista disc too and it gave me the same error). I tried supergrub and it didn't boot into it right so I can never access the right stuff. I was wondering if there's a program I can pull from the internet or something to run in OS X that fixes the BCD. My Ubuntu partition works (sort of, Ubuntu is definitely not meant for Macs) and I tried running ms-sys or something by that name and it wouldn't compile right. I'm out of ideas and I would like to have Windows 7 working...
Figured it out. I have an odd feeling no one would have been able to help me anyway lol
