Partitioning Error, Do I really have to format ?

All,
I was happy that my update to Snow Leopard went really smooth and everything worked fine until today LOL
I try to install Windows Vista and used the Bootcamp software and he is showing the following error message : http://i82.servimg.com/u/f82/09/02/92/27/screen23.png
So I try to repair the disk permission (we never know) and it didn't find any error
http://i82.servimg.com/u/f82/09/02/92/27/screen25.png
So I try to partition it manually and still didn't work http://i82.servimg.com/u/f82/09/02/92/27/screen24.png
Now I'm try to erase the free space on the hard drive as that could help
http://i82.servimg.com/u/f82/09/02/92/27/screen26.png
I google it and saw that some people had to clone there disk and format the hard rive completely and then put everything back, but I wonder if there is not another solution then formatting all the disk and spend hours on formatting, cloning and putting back.
Thanks

First, it is saying you have files that are preventing you, and erasing free space and repairing the drive and permissions doesn't attack the problem.
You need to consolidate and collect all the free space from its fragments, defrag free space, so that BC Assistant can find CONTIGUOUS FREE SPACE on the end of the drive to assign for Boot Camp and Windows.
Yes you should have a backup, that you can restore from; even that you can boot from.
Mac OS lacks ability to defrag free space. Something like iDefrag and / or iPartition, and probably Drive Genius 2 (have never used it) would do it for you. Otherwise, use Disk Utilty Restore or SuperDuper (one of best programs to clone a volume, and keep the clone current).
I'm surprised you didn't see and find the same advice I just gave you in other threads, or from someone else, as this is one of those questions that gets asked routinely, on near-daily basis.
If you have been doing and keeping backups, which I think is essential and paramount, then the process of ERASE and RESTORE for 100GB is probably the safest and takes 2 hrs depending on your disk drives.
Installing Snow Leopard should be offering to backup or update your backup or ask if you have a backup before proceeding.

  • Boot Camp error: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

    Hi!
    I am getting the error:
    "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.  The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
    I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
    I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
    Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

    This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
    Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
    Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
    You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • I want to tranfer non purchased music from my iphone 4s back onto my PC that I have re-formatted due to errors.

    I want to tranfer non purchased music from my iphone 4s back onto my PC that I have re-formatted due to errors.
    I have backed up the iphone onto my newly installed version of itunes.
    All the purchased albums/songs have been tranferred.
    I tried to tranfer by ticking the sync box but its says it will wipe the iphone and replace it with the new library which has only a fraction of my 1000+ songs.
    I have read many reviews that say it can be done with a third party program but when I looked into this they offer free evaluation but want about £20 for the program but feel this can be done at no cost.
    The itunes is saying my iphone can only be synced to one PC but the original one is wiped.
    Am I right in thinking I should go ahead with syncing the iphone then do the restore. Im just worried that once its synced the music and photos/videos will be gone forever.
    If I go down this route, I think I still need to know how to tranfer the non purchased songs from my iphone back onto the PC with the newly reinstalled itunes.

    Then you will have to purchase 3rd party  software.

    No. You will lose the music that's on the phone if you do that.
    The iPhone is not a backup device. Restore the music to your computer using the backup you should have made of your data before you re-formatted it. If you didn't back up your computer, you will have to pay for software to try and extract it from the phone.

    I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format". Can someone please help me sort this problem, it's so frustrating!!!!!!

    It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • I have downloaded OS X Yosemite using recovery from boot but while installing error occuring showing unable to extract essential.pkg so can't install. problem is i have already formatted my drive and dont have any os right now. please help

    i have downloaded OS X Yosemite using recovery from boot but while installing error occuring showing unable to extract essential.pkg so can't install. problem is i have already formatted my drive and dont have any os right now. only the downloaded new os x yosemite in the os x base system. please help

    Please try again after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
    Step 1
    Reset your computer’s PRAM.
    Step 2
    If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
    Step 3
    Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
    Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups.
    Step 4
    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the machine tested.

    Today,  after having published my website without difficulty for years, I got an error message saying that the file format was unrocognized.  Anyone have any suggestions.

    You need to give some more info.
    How are you publishing your site - iWeb FTP or another application? If the latter, is the encoding set to Unicode (UTF-8)?
    Who is giving you this message - the server?

  • Invalid Partition Error with each boot after BIOS update???

    Need help from the experts:
    I have all of a sudden had problems with every boot, receiving an "invalid partition" error every timeI start my machine. ONly significant thing I have done lately is flash bios to v 1.1 on the K8N Neo2 Plat board using MSI tool. I had no such problems prior to flashing to 1.1, though I have had other problems related to memory voltage...
    What, if anything, does BIOS have to do with it? my drives are both 160GB, formatted NTFS each a single large partition...is the system thinking that's an invalid partition size?
    At any rate, I have already tried a complete low level format of my drives and re-install of Win XP Pro from scratch to make sure nothing was corrupted, and sure enough, upon next boot (needed to complete some driver installs) I get the same error. Of note, I also get an error re: one of my 2 DVD drives...related?
    So, for now, the only way around this is to boot using XP CD, execute 'R' for recovery, then use DOS command 'FIXMBR' to write a new boot record, and then I am able to get back in...until the next re-boot.
    Have had numerous issues with this board / bios, though this is the most profound one.
    Need help...this is confounding me. What should I be looking into, trying next?
    system:
    AMD 64 3500+, stock cooling
    Zalman 400B psu
    MSI K8N Neo2 PLatinum mobo

    Asus E616P1 16x DVD rom
    Plextor 712A DVD RW / CDRW
    MSI 9800PRO 128

    Merry Christmas

    Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

    Just in case if you are aware, Im trying the example in Lucas Jellema's book Chapter 7 and Im getting the error there in the first example project.
    I have seen few very old threads on this problem in the forum but none of them had any answers so opening up a new one.
    Thanks.

    Your transformation with for-each look is incorrect.
    This is what you have right now:
    <ns1:AppointmentRequestsLog>
    <xsl:for-each select="/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequestRoot/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequest">
    <ns1:AppointmentRequest>
    <ns1:C1>
    <xsl:value-of select="xp20:current-date()"/>
    </ns1:C1>
    <ns1:C2>
    <xsl:value-of select='substring-before("doctor1234_20120926_helloworld","_")'/>
    </ns1:C2>
    <ns1:C3>
    <xsl:value-of select="/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequestRoot/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequest/imp1:C2"/>
    </ns1:C3>This is the correct way to write for-each within XSLT:
    <ns1:AppointmentRequestsLog>
    <xsl:for-each select="/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequestRoot/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequest">
    <ns1:AppointmentRequest>
    <ns1:C1>
    <xsl:value-of select="xp20:current-date()"/>
    </ns1:C1>
    <ns1:C2>
    <xsl:value-of select='substring-before("doctor1234_20120926_helloworld","_")'/>
    </ns1:C2>
    <ns1:C3>
    <xsl:value-of select="imp1:C2"/>
    </ns1:C3>Also, check the flow trace in the EM console for the instance which errored out and paste here the data which is being sent to the FileWrite Adapter. Also, you need to ensure that any elements which are defined as xs:int should not have empty string as values. For example in your write schema C3 has int. So you should map C3 in XSLT like following:
    <xsl:choose>
    <xsl:when test="imp1:C2 and string-length(imp1:C2) > 0">
    <ns1:C3>
    <xsl:value-of select="imp1:C2"/>
    </ns1:C3>
    </xsl:when>
    <xsl:otherwise>
    <ns1:C3>0</ns1:C3>
    </xsl:otherwise>
    </xsl:choose>

    We are using Essbase 6.5.
    We have tried following options
    FIX1:
    In Microsoft Excel, under ESSBASE -> OPTIONS, under the MODE tab, the check box UPDATE MODE is checked.
    When the UPDATE MODE check box is selected retrievals will automatically lock the corresponding database area with each retrieval. Disable Update Mode to stop locking blocks automatically. In update mode, the Send command (which updates the server with data values from the spreadsheet) does not automatically unlock data after the send.
    1. Launch Microsoft Excel
    2. Select ESSBASE -> OPTIONS
    3. Select the MODE tab
    4. Uncheck "Update Mode" to return to normal mode
    This error is seen when trying to lock and send data via the Hyperion Essbase Spreadsheet Add-in into that fall within a replicated target partition definition
    1. Go to HYPERION APPLICATION MANAGER -> DATABASE -> PARTITIONMANAGER
    2. Select the relevant partition
    3. Select EDIT
    4. On the CONNECT TAB, select SETTINGS and tick the option THETARGET PARTITION CAN BE UPDATED
    Also gave write access to that user.
    Can anyone give another possible solutions.
    With thanks,
    babu

  • Error: "You do not have suffficient access to perform a lock on this database

    Hi, <BR><BR>I have a problem with Essbase Excel Add-in, i can´t retrieve because appears this error: Error: "You do not have suffficient access to perform a lock on this database<BR><BR>Plese, help me. Idon´t have speak inglish.

    If the problem is limited to a single PC, I would suggest that you uninstall the Essbase client on that PC, reboot, and the reinstall the client including the addin. <BR><BR>It appears that some sort of macro is running on that PC that does teh login in update mode. I'd also remove all copies of any excel spreadsheets that might be involved, copying a clean version from another PC.<BR><BR>If you are using any third-party tools, like toolbars or other addins for excel and essbase, I'd clean them out also. <BR><BR>You haven't said whether a login from an new, blank spreadsheet works. If it does, the problem is in the spreadsheet you are using to retrieve the application, otherwise, the problem may be in a corrupted add-in, or even possibly with your excell installation.<BR><BR>It's hard to diagnose a problem when you haven't given us any more information about the problem. You haven't really answered any of the questions we've asked about behaviour and whether the problem existsin certain other circumstances. I'm certain that if language is a problem, someone might be able to help you in some language other than English, but generally this forum works in English because it a a common language in the Hyperion community.

  • Partition errors - "Disk Utility can't repair this disk"

    I partitioned my external 1TB WD HD into two drives (950GB + 50GB) using Disk Utility (OS X Mavericks 10.9.1). However the 950GB partition will no longer mount. It is recognised in Disk Utility, but grayed out. "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility lead to the worrying error message "Disk Utility can't repair this disk."
    From the Disk Utility logs, the initial partition was successful:
    Partition 1:
    Name:  “Media Centre”
    Size: 948.13 GB
    File system: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Do not erase contents
    Partition 2:
    Name:  “Media Centre 2”
    Size: 50.03 GB
    File system: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Do not erase contents
    Mounting disk
    Partition complete
    Afterwards, I changed the name of the second partition “Media Centre 2” to "BOOTCAMP" (I was going to try to install Windows 7), but then changed my mind and tried to remove the second partition. At that point the log gives the error "Mount of “Media Centre” failed".
    Partition 1 ("Media Centre") now seems to be in limbo, stuck as 950GB, and "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility lead to the worrying error message "Disk Utility can't repair this disk". Also in Disk Utility, Partition 1 ("Media Centre") now has the format classification "Mac OS Extended" rather than "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    Any idea how I can get my hard drive to mount and get the data back?

    In  Disk Utility select the Top most entry on the left, the drive model and or manufacturer name and size entry, then click the Partition tab and Repartition it to your liking. If that fails the drive is bad.

  • MBP Partition error when booting Windows 7

    Hi there,
    I'm really pulling my hair out with this problem and woud appreciate any help! I've searched everywhere and not found a solution, and it's infuriating.
    The Background - I am using a 2008 MBP running Mountain Lion, and have partitioned my 320GB Hard drive to give 50GB to run Windows 7 on the partition. I have tried Boot Camp but when it reboots to the Windows installation the partition Boot Camp creates will not work as it's not in NTFS mode. Therefore I used Disk Utility to create a NTFS based partition and ran the installation that way. The Windows 7 install seems to work and when it gets to the end, reboots as it should. This is where we get to the annoying part...
    The Problem - I hold down Option to choose the startup disk. If I press WINDOWS (the partitioned disk that should now have Windows 7 installed) I get a black screen with 1 blinking cursor. It will not go away, no matter how long I leave it. I've tried multiple times and left if for over 2 hours, and nothing. If I select the CD as the startup disk, I get a message reading "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", and of course, pressing any amount of keys many many times achieves nothing, and the cursor continues to blink away at the end of the line indefinitely.
    I have tried repeating the process over ten times today and have got nowhere. I even tried partitioning with a MS-DOS FAT system, and running a windows XP install disk I have, and the exact same thing happened. It got to the end of the install and rebooted, then when I selected the windows statrup disk, Blinky the b*stard blinking cursor turned up and refused to leave until I cut the power.
    There are answers to this problem out there and theres one forum on here discussing the same issue, but their solution didn't work for me.
    Please help someone, all I want to do is some retro gaming. No human being should have to endure this much suffering in order to enjoy C&C Red Alert 2.

    Windows insists that its Partition Map be set up the Windows way. No exceptions. If you use anything other than BOOT CAMP (or Open Source REFIt) to do the partition setup, it will not work.
    WARNING: If you allow Windows to Modify the partition Map directly, Windows will clobber Mac OS X so completely that will require a complete Mac OS X Re-Install. Windows in not a pleasant guest.
    Be certain you are using the correct version of BOOT CAMP to match Your Mac OS X, and check for which versions of Windows are supported under it.
