Passing a annotated class to a method

Hello all,
I don't know if it is possible, or even if exists a better solution. I'd like to specify that a method can only receive as a parameter an object that contais a specific annotation. Something like this:
@MyAnnotation
public class MyClass {
public void method(Object<AnnotatedWithMyAnnotation> object) {
}Is that possible, or have I to check the presence of annotation in the method code?
Thanks in advance,
Andre

No, that can't be done declaratively.
You can write it down in your JavaDoc and throw an IllegalArgumentException() when a wrong object is passed in.
Why do you need this anyway? Maybe you can design it slightly differently so that this requirement goes away.

  • Trying to pass and object variable to a method

    I have yet another question. I'm trying to display my output in succession using a next button. The button works and I get what I want using test results, however what I really want to do is pass it a variable instead of using a set number.
    I want to be able to pass the object variables myProduct, myOfficeSupplies, and maxNumber to method actionPerformed so they can be in-turn passed to the displayResults method which is called in the actionPerformed method. Since there is no direct call to actionPerformed because it is called within one of the built in methods, I can't tell it to receive and pass those variables. Is there a way to do it without having to pass them through the built-in methods?

  • How to pass calculated value to Application Module method?

    I am a newbie to ADF. Ithink I am missing something very basic:
    In JDeveloper 10.1.3.3 using ADF, I am trying to pass the session ID to a method in my App Mod, but the method receives a null value. I think I a getting the session ID too late in the process, but do not know where else to get it.
    Here are the details:
    I am passing 3 argument to a method called ProcessReport:
    public String ProcessReport(Number reportNumber, Double caratWeight, String sessionID)
    In my PageDef I have:
    <p>
    &lt;executables&gt;
    &lt;variableIterator id="variables"&gt;
    &lt;variable Type="oracle.jbo.domain.Number"
    Name="ProcessReport_reportNumber" IsQueriable="false"/&gt;
    &lt;variable Type="java.lang.Double" Name="ProcessReport_caratWeight"
    IsQueriable="false"/&gt;
    &lt;variable Type="java.lang.String" Name="ProcessReport_sessionID"
    IsQueriable="false"/&gt;
    &lt;/variableIterator&gt;
    &lt;/executables&gt;
    &lt;bindings&gt;
    </p>
    <p>
    &lt;methodAction id="ProcessReport" MethodName="ProcessReport"
    RequiresUpdateModel="true" Action="999"
    IsViewObjectMethod="false" DataControl="RC2DataControl"
    InstanceName="RC2DataControl.dataProvider"
    ReturnName="RC2DataControl.methodResults.RC2DataControl_dataProvider_ProcessReport_result"&gt;
    &lt;NamedData NDName="reportNumber" NDType="oracle.jbo.domain.Number"
    NDValue="${bindings.ProcessReport_reportNumber}"/&gt;
    &lt;NamedData NDName="caratWeight" NDType="java.lang.Double"
    NDValue="${bindings.ProcessReport_caratWeight}"/&gt;
    &lt;NamedData NDName="sessionID" NDType="java.lang.String"
    NDValue="${bindings.ProcessReport_sessionID}"/&gt;
    &lt;/methodAction&gt;
    &lt;attributeValues id="reportNumber" IterBinding="variables"&gt;
    &lt;AttrNames&gt;
    &lt;Item Value="ProcessReport_reportNumber"/&gt;
    &lt;/AttrNames&gt;
    &lt;/attributeValues&gt;
    &lt;attributeValues id="caratWeight" IterBinding="variables"&gt;
    &lt;AttrNames&gt;
    &lt;Item Value="ProcessReport_caratWeight"/&gt;
    &lt;/AttrNames&gt;
    &lt;/attributeValues&gt;
    &lt;attributeValues id="sessionID" IterBinding="variables"&gt;
    &lt;AttrNames&gt;
    &lt;Item Value="ProcessReport_sessionID"/&gt;
    &lt;/AttrNames&gt;
    &lt;/attributeValues&gt;
    &lt;/bindings&gt;
    </p>
    On my page I have added an outputText control called sessionID to hold the session ID.
    In my command Button to submit the page I have and action to call a method in my backing bean:
    The code is:
    FacesContext ctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    ExternalContext ectx = ctx.getExternalContext();
    HttpSession mySession = (HttpSession) ectx.getSession(false);
    String theSessionID = mySession.getId();
    sessionID.setValue(theSessoinID) // I hope it populates the outputText control and is added to the binding to be passed to the ProcessReport method
    BindingContainer bindings = getBindings();
    OperationBinding operationBinding = bindings.getOperationBinding("ProcessReport");
    Object result = operationBinding.execute();
    if (!operationBinding.getErrors().isEmpty()) {
    return null;
    String resultStr = (String) result;
    return resultStr;
    No luck! I think I should get the sesson ID earlier, when the page loads, but I do not know where to put the code.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    here's what I would do
    1. Create a managed bean as follows
    import javax.faces.context.ExternalContext;
    import javax.faces.context.FacesContext;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpSession;
    public class HTTPSessionAccessBean {
        public HTTPSessionAccessBean() {
        public void setHttpSessionId(String httpSessionId) {
        public String getHttpSessionId() {
            FacesContext ctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
            ExternalContext ectx = ctx.getExternalContext();
            HttpSession mySession = (HttpSession) ectx.getSession(false);
            String sessionId = mySession.getId();
            return sessionId;
    }2. In the ApplicationModule Impl class create the following method and expose it as a clientInterface
        public void setSession(String sessionId){
           ((SessionImpl)this.getSession()).getEnvironment().put("http_session",sessionId);
        }3) In the pageDef File create a method binding as
    <methodAction id="setSession"
                      InstanceName="AppModuleDataControl.dataProvider"
                      DataControl="AppModuleDataControl" MethodName="setSession"
                      RequiresUpdateModel="true" Action="999"
                      IsViewObjectMethod="false">
          <NamedData NDName="sessionId"
                     NDValue="${HttpSession.httpSessionId}"
                     NDType="java.lang.String"/>4) In the same pageDef file create an invokeAction
        <invokeAction id="setSessionInAM" Binds="setSession"
                      RefreshCondition="#{!adfFacesContext.postback}"/>The session ID is now accessible from the ApplicationModule as
            Hashtable env = ((SessionImpl)this.getSession()).getEnvironment();
            String sessonId =(String) env.get("session);
            }This maintains the separation of model/view layer

    Thanks & regards
    Sankar.

    Associated with the text box there will be some kind of event handler. Maybe it's an action event on the text box (when the user clicks return) or maybe you have a separate button that the user clicks.
    Either way, in the event handler, get the text from the text box, and then call the sendData method, passing the text as an argument.

  • What class called my method?

    I have tried using the StringWriter and the printStackTrace() methodology for finding out the name of the method that actually called my class and it works fine. But the problem is that the execution time is too high (abt 70msec). I need a better and more efficient way of finding this out.
    Does someone have an idea of how to do this?
    Regards,
    Manoj Rathod.

    Ok, this was my test code:
        public class MethodTrace {
            public static void main (String[] args) {
                method3(false);
            public static void method1 (boolean stop) {
                StackTraceElement e[] = (new Throwable()).getStackTrace();
                System.out.println("method1: called by " + e[1].getMethodName());
                if (!stop) method3(false);
            public static void method2 (boolean stop) {
                StackTraceElement e[] = (new Throwable()).getStackTrace();
                System.out.println("method2: called by " + e[1].getMethodName());
                if (!stop) method1(true);
            public static void method3 (boolean stop) {
                StackTraceElement e[] = (new Throwable()).getStackTrace();
                System.out.println("method3: called by " + e[1].getMethodName());
                if (!stop) method2(false);
        };And this was the output:
        method3: called by main
        method2: called by method3
        method1: called by method2As for the speed, I don't know. It's cleaner than using printStackTrace(), and I would think it would be faster. But I'm not sure.
    Why do you need to know the calling method, though? Perhaps there is some other, faster way to do what you want to do that doesn't have to use any stack tracing stuff at all.
    Or maybe you could just call the method, passing the name of the calling method as a String parameter:
        public void excellent (String caller) {
            System.out.println("Called by " + caller);
        public void superb () {
            excellent("superb");
        public void hard () {
            excellent("hard");
        };Lemme know if you find out anything interesting.

  • Passing general "enum" "class" "thing" :-(

    What I'm trying to do is pass a general enum to a method, like this:
    public void parseEnum(enum toParse)
         for(enum blah : enum.values())
              System.out.println(blah);
    }or whatever (don't care if the stuff inside the method works right now, just threw up an example). I can't do this. Why not? Is there some kind of way I can manage to do this?
    The problem is that I have a whole bunch of enums structured like this:
    enum ListOfElementIds
         ID_ONE( "ThingOne" ),
         ID_TWO( "ThingTwo" ),
         ETC( "ThingThreeOhNoes" ),
         AND_ETC( "ThingFourIsTooMany" );
         private String elementId;
         String getElementId()
              return elementId;
         ListOfElementIds( String elementId )
              this.elementId = elementId;
    }and I'd LIKE to, via a single method, cycle through each of the "values" (ID_ONE would be a value) of any enum I give as a parameter of the method.
    If I'm not explaining this well, please let me know how I can elaborate so as to make my problem as lucid as possible :-P
    (I'm a QA tester writing selenium tests and all the developers that I usually bug about this stuff are OoO :-( )

    import java.lang.reflect.*;
    enum ExampleEnum {HELLO, WORLD};
    public class EnumExample {
        public void iterate(Class<? extends Enum> cls) {
            try {

        public static void main(String[] args) {
            new EnumExample().iterate(ExampleEnum.class);
    }The values method is static.

  • Passing a whole array through a method

    I need some quick help on how to pass a whole array through the method addCoins(). Here is the code:
    public class Purse {
         private Coin[] coins;
         private int lastIdx;
    public Purse() {
         coins = new Coin[100];
         lastIdx = 0;
    public boolean addCoin(Coin b) {
         if (lastIdx < coins.length) {
              lastIdx++;
              coins[lastIdx] = b;
              return true;
         else {
              return false;
    public boolean addCoins(Coin[] b) {
         if (lastIdx < coins.length) {
              for (b=0; b<99; b++) {
                   coins[b] = b;
         else {
              return false;
    }I figured passing the whole array would be "Coin[] b" but apparently Eclipse says that it can't convert from int to Coin[]. I have no idea what that means. Thanks in advance.

    I need to create 3 classes, Coin, Purse, and TestPurse.
    Coin code:
    public class Coin {
         private String typeOfCoin;
         private double value;
    public Coin(String t, double v) {
         typeOfCoin = t;
         value = v;
    public String toString() {
         return typeOfCoin + value;
    }Purse code:
    public class Purse {
         private Coin[] coins;
         private int lastIdx;
    public Purse() {
         coins = new Coin[100];
         lastIdx = 0;
    public boolean addCoin(Coin b) {
         if (lastIdx < coins.length) {
              lastIdx++;
              coins[lastIdx] = b;
              return true;
         else {
              return false;
    public boolean addCoins(Coin[] b) {
          if (lastIdx < coins.length) {
              for (int i=0; i<coins.length; i++) {
                   coins[i] = b;
         else {
              return false;
    public Coin getReverse() {
         coins = new Coin[0];
         lastIdx = 100;
    }In the Purse class, I need methods addCoin and addCoins that need to return boolean.  addCoin is supposed to add the argument coin as an element of the coins array if there is space.  addCoins neds to add all the coins in the input argument as elements of the coins array if there is space.  I then have to create two methods, getReverse and getValue that take no argument and getReverse that returns an array of type Coin while getValue returns a double.  In getReverse, I create an array simlar to coins but this new array is reverse.  I started on this method but I first need to worry about the addCoin and addCoins method.  For the record, getValue needs to add up the values of all the coins in the purse and return it, which I have no idea how to do that.  That's my next question.

  • Passing complex java class by reference to JNI

    Hello all ,
    I need to pass a java class (with primitive class members) to JNI and let the C++ update class member values so java would automatically get the new values.
    I also would like to return such a class from JNI to java..
    Is it possible ?
    I would be happy to get some examples ...
    thanks

    1. Passing an object is trivial. Define the java class, instantiate an object, and pass it as a parameter of your native method.
    2. Calling methods of that object is standard JNI. You must
    o Look up the class.
    o Look up the method.
    o Call the method.
    3. Returning a java object from C is trivial. Just make it a parameter of your return statement. However you might want to think about whether you really need to do that; if it was an object passed with the native method call, then the object already exists within java. Otherwise, you will have to consider using JNI to instantiate java objects.
    Start with the tutorials. If this project gets extensive, then I recommend buying a book on JNI.

    I NEVER USED OOPS CONCEPT.BUT I GOT A TASK ON ALV REPORT USING class CL_GUI_ALV_GRID, call method SET_TABLE_FOR_FIRST_DISPLAY for ALV . I HAD PASSED THE VALUES FROM INTERNAL TABLE AND GOT OUTPUT IN ALV.
    The problem is When i save an layout(default setting button ).
    iam unable to get the output for all fields.
    if u want i will send screenshots to ur mail
    THANKS IN ADVANCE.

    ok fine,
    In the output (alv grid) there is an icon for layout settings.
    if i want to save layout (as DEFAULT SETTING) i am missing some fields in output
    EX:
    mat no | batch  | proces order | time  |  date |
    when i save layout (as DEFAULT SETTING) i am missing some fields in output
    mat no | batch  |
    the rest of the field were not displayed.
    if u are not clear just ask me. i will send some more examples.

  • Passing values from HTML to JSP method,

    Hello:
    I am starting to wonder if what I am doing will ever work...
    Ok, I am trying to avoid javascript. I have a drop-down list named "year" and I wish to call a JSP method that is defined/declared in the same JSP.
    First, I want to pass the chosen option to the method and then store the name/value in a global variable.
    Second, depending on what the user selects, I will get values from an array defined/initialized on page load AND display those values in another drop-down list.
    As a test, and until now, I have done this. I am not passing anything yet, I just wanted to test this "fuzzy logic" I am having:
    <%!
    String currentYear;
    private void showDaysInDDList()
    currentYear = request.getparameter("year");
    %>
    Then on the HTML part of the page I have a drop-down list:
    <html>
    <head>
    <title></title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">
    </head>
    <body bgcolor="ffffcc">
    <form method="POST" name="form1" action="left.jsp">
    <select name="year" onchange="<%=showDaysInDDList()%>">
         <option></option>
         </select>
    I am getting the following errors:
    An error occurred at line: 105 in the jsp file: /p1/left.jsp
    request cannot be resolved
    ....and regarding to the onchange="<%=showDaysInDDList()%>"> part I am getting the following:
    An error occurred at line: 204 in the jsp file: /p1/left.jsp
    The method print(boolean) in the type JspWriter is not applicable for the arguments (void)
    In the action="left.jsp", left.jsp is the same page where the drop-down list and the method is. I am not sure if that is another error.
    I will continue here with my coffee ... any help will be extremely appreciated !!..
    I'll have to shut down my "asp.net mind" for a while..
    I'll reply later,
    MMS

    Ok, this is a bit messy here. I don't know how much you've read up on JSP but you seem confused about some fundamentals to me. However, you mention that you've worked with ASP .net so I'm going to assume you do have some notion of how thing should work in general.
    1. JSP is on the server-side and events like onchange that you've used take place on the client-side after the JSP/ servlet code has run and produced the HTML page. So calling your showDaysInDDList() will not work.
    2. Are you sure you know how the declaration tags ( <%! %> ) work? When you normally write JSP code without these tags, all that code gets compiled into the service method of the corresponding servlet that the JSP gets turned into. But, you can declare your own methods and variables outside the service method by using these tags.
    So what you're effectively doing is declaring
    private String/ void showDaysInDDList()
    }and followed by your usual _jspService()
    public void _jspService(HttpServletRequest request,
       HttpServletResponse  response)
         throws IOException, ServletException
    }Now it may be clear, that the request object is not available in the showDaysInDDList() method by default; you'll either have to declare it ( not sure if it's good programming practice or not ) or pass the required parameters in the call.
    3. Like you seem to have realized, that error about the printing of booleans was related to the return type of your method because <%= %> translates to out.println(); and since the argument was the method call, the return value was to be printed which here was a void ( not sure why it says boolean though :D ).
    Read up on this introduction to JSPs http://java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/JSPIntro/contents.html, seems to be pretty good and covers everything in quick, short chunks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Creation of a static class with private methods

    I'm new to java programming and am working on a project where I need to have a static class that does a postage calculation that must contain 2 private methods, one for first class and one for priority mail. I can't seem to figure out how to get the weight into the class to do the calculations or how to call the two private methods so that when one of my other classes calls on this class, it retrieves the correct postage. I've got all my other classes working correct and retrieving the information required. I need to use the weight from another class and return a "double". Help!!!

  • How to pass a file into a java method

    I am trying to pass a file into a java method so I can read the file from inside the method. How can I do this? I am confident passing int, char, arrays etc into methods as I know how to identify them in a methods signature but I have no idea how to decalre a file in a mthods signature. Any ideas please ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Just go thru the URL,
    http://www6.software.ibm.com/devtools/news1001/art24.htm#toc2
    I hope you will get a fair understanding of 'what is pass by reference/value'.
    You can pass Object reference as an argument.
    What Pablo Lucien had written is right. But the ideal situation is if you are not modifying the
    file in the calling method, then you can pass the String (file name) as an argument to the called method.

  • In which case we need a class with all methods defined as abstract ?

    In which case we need : A class with all methods defined as abstract (or should we go for Interface always in this case)

    The concept of interface and abstract class overlaps sometime, but we can have the following thumb rule to use them for our specific need:
    1) Interface: This should be use for code structuring. They standardize your application by providing a specific contract within and outside. If you think abstract class also provide structure, then reconsider as it limits the structure re-usability when there are many super-classes to inherit from. Java allow multiple inheritance by interface and not by Abstract class.
    2) Abstract Class: This should be use for code-reusability. Interface doesn't have any code so can't be used for code-reusability.
    Actually we can use both to provide the best.Taking a refernce to J2EE framework, the "Servlet" is an interface. It laids down the contract/structure for any code to be a servlet.
    But the "GenericServlet" class is an abstract class which provides implementation of some of the methods defined in the "Servlet" interface and leave some method abstract.
    Thus we see that the "Servlet" interface standardise the structure and the "GenericServlet" abstract class gives code re-usability.
    Original Question:
    In which case we need a class with all methods defined as abstract ?To this question, as all methods are abstarct we don't have option for code-reusability. so why not add standard structure concept to your application. So if there is not any restriction on making the field variable(if any) as final, we should go with the interface concept.

    i want to pass the from value from java script code how can i do it and if i can not do it directly what is the work around for it.

    Hi,
    assign an ID to the inputText and use the JavaScript Document Object Model to access it. Also use a good browser with good DOM source viewer to browse the HTML page your JSP creates at runtime Firefox and Chrome have good source viewers.
    there are truckloads of JavaScript examples on the Internet.
    Or as Frank said if you get the setActionListener working properly you can easily copy a value from one input value binding to another.
