Passing a variable into HTML to play a Flash file

I'm trying to create a simple SWF file that can receive the name of a FLV file in the HTML file and play it since I have many FLV files.  Basically using the technique of FlashVars.  I've set the contentPath/source in the components to be blank, and set my actions in the first frame to be player.source = filename, as was instructed to do so in a Flash book I am reading.  I then set the "filename" variable to a file in the same path as the web page in the HTML file, however, all I get is a blank Flash player skin.  The FLV file will not load.  I also tried setting the "filename" variable to load the FLV from a public website in the same domain and on another domain, but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas on what could be wrong?   I am using Adobe Flash CS 4.

1) You mention that there are 3 locations that need to reference FlashVars in my HTML file, but I made only 2.  Where should the 3rd change be made?  Below is my code:
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0" width="640" height="480" id="flashvar" align="middle">
    <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />
    <param name="movie" value="flashvar.swf" />
    <param name="loop" value="false" />
    <param name="quality" value="high" />
    <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
    <param name="FlashVars" value="filename=file.flv" />
    <embed src="flashvar.swf" loop="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" FlashVars="filename=file.flv" width="640" height="480" name="flashvar" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" />
    </object>
The filename=file.flv is located in the same web directory as the flashvar.swf file.  Am I supposed to set the filename=www.mydomain.com/file.flv?  Or am I supposed to set the filename=c:\directory.\file.flv?
2) I don't care if I'm using AS2 or AS3.  I just need this to work.  I thought I would post in AS2 since it would be more compatible with previous FlashPlayers.  And for the record, I am using contentPath.  My understanding is that the difference in this case would just be contentPath versus source.  My actionscript on the first frame is: player.contentPath = filename;

  • How to pass a variable into a cfc?

    prior to calling the cfinvoke, I have coding that determins a
    variable "X"
    I need to pass X into a cfc so it can complete the query held
    there.
    So I tried
    <cfinvoke component="A"
    method="AList"
    returnvariable="AResults">
    <cfinvokeargument name="x" value="#X#"
    /></cfinvoke>
    correct so far?
    Now over on the cfc page is where I'm getting stuck
    Inside my cffunction I'm adding <cfargument name="X" />
    But how do I get the value in?

    I don't quite understand your question. Can you rephrase?
    But before all that, bear in mind that one doesn't pass a
    variables into a
    *CFC*, one passes it into a function within the CFC. And as
    with all
    functions, one passes values into the function by passing it
    as an
    argument. But - of course - the function has to be coded to
    expect the
    argument.
    Your own sample code demonstrates this in action:
    <cfinvokeargument name="abbrCode"
    value="#companyAbbrCode#" />
    (NB: lose the trailing slash: this is CFML, not XML).
    So you know how to do that.
    Hence me not quite understanding what you're actually asking.

    What do you mean about opening a flash file? Do you want the
    .fla file
    to open in flash? Or is it a swf that you imported into
    Director? Or
    is it an exe that was published from flash? Or a website that
    was
    created with Flash?
    If you are opening a .exe and you know the path to it, then
    you can use
    Director's built-in open command
    open the moviePath&"flashFile.exe"
    for most other things, I would use BuddyAPI. To open an exe,
    baRunProgram(). To open a fla or swf, baOpenFile.
    To make Director open a swf on the stage, import it and
    simply tell the
    button to go to that frame.

  • Passing dynamic variable from html to Flash

    I know this is pretty simple but all that I have read doesn't make much sense to me. I have one swf calling another swf that I have embedded into an htnl. In other words just calling another html page in a seperate window.
    In one.swf (runing in broswer) I use the below to call another html page passing the variable NewLessonArray. This contains an array of completed chapters.
    // LOADING URL
    var NewLessonCompleteArray:String = LessonCompleteArray.toString();
    navigateToURL(new URLRequest("two/index.html?CurrentLessonInfo=<NewLessonCompleteArray>"), "_blank");
    In the receiving swf I want to retrieve the passing parameters.
    two.swf
    // Getting the parameters passed
    this.loaderInfo.parameters.toString()
    All that is returned that I can see is object Object. But since I am passing on a address line into another swf embedded in a html page I am unable to determine that correct syntac for retrieving the information.
    Any suggestions? This has got to be pretty simple... I think.
    THANKS

    What you are trying to do is not extremely difficult to do, but it is not something I would consider as being simple.  With Andrei's approach you should be able to take the url String and dissect the parameters from it using String methods, like split().
    As for the loaderInfo end of things, you are not passing the parameters to the swf file, you are passing them to the html page.  So the loaderInfo won't have any info for you regarding the url parameters.  The loadInfo would typically get parameters via the FlashVars parameters passed in in the html's swf embedding code.
    Here are some other solutions that you might consider.  I have not dealt with these myself, they are merely in my collection of useful info, so you might have to experiment to get them working.  One is a link to a class-based approach and the other is an approach that use swfObject embedding to dynamically add the parameters as FlashVars to the embedding code....
    http://mikethenderson.com/2009/02/as3-return-query-string-value-version-2/#more-105
    OR
    In your HTML:
    var flashvars = {};
    if (swfobject.getQueryParamValue("aParameter")) {
      flashvars.param = swfobject.getQueryParamValue("aParameter");
    swfobject.embedSWF("myMovie.swf", "myContent", "550", "400", "9.0.0", "", flashvars);
    And the param variable will be available as a FlashVar to your movie:
    var theParam = loaderInfo.parameters.param;

  • Passing a variable into workflow

    I know u can pass variables from a form into a workflow using processInputs.....but let's say I have a update workflow and there's some attribute that has changed on the user that requires the update workflow to trigger the disable workflow.....let's say I use the disableUser workflow service does anyone know if it's possible for to pass a variable from the update workflow to the disable workflow??

    you do it the same way you would in any other workflow. but if. In fact, I THINK that you dont even need to pass it. The external workflow should be available to all internal workflows.
    otherwise define it in the disable and pass it in. We do this all the time. should work fine.

    VARIABLE_SCREEN=X&BI_COMMAND_1-BI_COMMAND_TYPE=SET_VARIABLES_STATE&BI_COMMAND_1-VARIABLE_VALUES-VARIABLE_VALUE_1-VARIABLE_TYPE=VARIABLE_INPUT_STRING&BI_COMMAND_1-VARIABLE_VALUES-VARIABLE_VALUE_1-VARIABLE_TYPE-VARIABLE_INPUT_STRING=XXXXXX&BI_COMMAND_1-VARIABLE_VALUES-VARIABLE_VALUE_1-VARIABLE=XXXXXXXXX
    added to the dashboard URL:
    pcd!3aportal_content!2fcom.sap.pct!2fplatform_add_ons!2fcom.sap.ip.bi!2fiViews!2fcom.sap.ip.bi.bex?TEMPLATE=DASHBOARD
    But any time I try this method it just refreshes the variable screen...
    Am I missing something? Maybe I think its easier then it really is.
    Thanks,

    Mike,
    Variable_screen=x will always force the variable screen to display.
    Try just variable_Screen=&BI_command etc etc

  • Passing Unix variable into sql

    Hi,
    I have a shell script with embedded SQL.
    In the script I have a Unix variable that has a char value
    id="P_test".
    I need to pass this variable to a select in a where condition like
    select * from table where camp1=$id.
    The problem is $id returns P_test rather than 'P_test' so that the select can work.
    Any ideea how to change the clause where to make the select work?
    I could also change the variable id as to have id=" 'P_test' " , but this variable comes from a file parsed and I don't know how to get 'P_test' instead of P_test.
    Thanks

    another option may be like this example -
    $OH10/bin/sqlplus -s > $CIGDEM_LOG_DIR/step1_$CIGDEM_DATE.log 2> $CIGDEM_LOG_DIR/step1_$CIGDEM_DATE.err <<EOF
    $CIGDEM_USERNAME1/$CIGDEM_PASSWORD1@$OTNS10
    @$CIGDEM_DIR/step1.sql $CIGDEM_EXP_DIR $CIGDEM_USERNAME3 $CIGDEM_PASSWORD3 $PERMANANT_TABLESPACE $TEMPORARY_TABLESPACE
    exit ;
    EOF
    "@$CIGDEM_DIR/step1.sql $CIGDEM_EXP_DIR $CIGDEM_USERNAME3 $CIGDEM_PASSWORD3 $PERMANANT_TABLESPACE $TEMPORARY_TABLESPACE" here we call step1.sql with arguments, they will be used with &n symbol inside sql statement -
    .. CREATE USER &2 IDENTIFIED by &3 TEMPORARY TABLESPACE &5 DEFAULT TABLESPACE &4 ; ..http://tonguc.wordpress.com/2007/11/29/linux-and-shell-scripting-part-2/

  • Swf demo files won't play in flash file on website

    Using Captivate 4, I created a project and published to a folder (as Flash 8). The main flash file has 4 swf demo files that are supposed to play on one of the slides; I uploaded all the published files (swf, js, htm) into a folder within my website's CMS. Our CMS uses it's own flash player to play the file; when it plays, all is well except for the slide that is supposed to show the 4 swf demos--these aren't showing up at all. If these demo files are in the same folder in the CMS as the main flash file, why can't it find them to make them play on the slide?
    here's a link to the page with the file:
    http://stage.lmc.simplicis.net/page/1/testlearningpoint.jsp (see link for "watch this video on city learning point")
    --it's the slide with "City Learning Point uses..." that's supposed to play 4 swf demos on the right side of the slide, but they don't show up at all
    Our website CMS is hosted and maintained by a vendor--if the issue is with the CMS, I'll need to know what to tell them so we can resolve the issue.

    Looks to me like the issue is indeed your CMS. The flash content is loaded in a lightbox, which is most likely controlled by some JavaScript or ASP. My guess would be that the problem lies with the paths to the files. The swf file that the lightbox loads is referenced in your CMS so it knows where to get it - the thing is that most likely it is not played from the location where it's located but instead played from the location where the lightbox script is loaded. Since the 4 SWF's you have are not located there it won't be able to find it.
    Also this lightbox approach isn't very good for this type of content. The demo is extremely small and the alignment of the Flash file looks weird. Instead just use the HTML file generated by Captivate and upload that to a directory in your CMS. Then change the link you have so it opens the HTML file in a new window and everything should work out just fine.

  • Don't know how to play a flash file

    I downloaded a .FLV file, but Windows isn't associating that file with Flash. When I click it I get asked which file to open it with. I checked and I have Flash 10.x on my system. I don't know where on my system flash is located. I looked in the C:\Program Files\Adobe directory but didn't find anything there. How do I associate the file to Flash so I can play it?

    Flash Player is a web player (browser plugin), not a standalone media player.  You can use Adobe Media Player to play Flash files.

  • Premiere Pro CC won't play my Flash files

    In older versions of Premiere (CS6), I was able to play Flash flv files in my movie sequence. I would download the flv files from iStock as comps and play them in the movie as placeholders until I was ready to purchase them. They no longer play in Premiere CC. What happened and how can I get around this without using an old version of Premiere?
    Thanks!!!

    Support for importing and exporting Flash files has been removed. Can't import FLV files

  • Playing a flash file in java

    Hi all,
    i need to play a flash(*.swf) file within my desktop application. can anyone help me with a sample code.
    Thanks in advance
    Ravisenan

    Whoah! Does this mean that (by using this utility) you can play flash files anywhere you have Java installed? Because as I recall Macromedia's stuff is proprietary (i.e. not necessarily platform independent). For example, only Windows PDA's can play flash files. But if I can put Java on a non-Windows PDA and play Flash like that, I'd be interested to know.
