Passing file location to script in Terminal

Here's what I've figured out so far:
tell application "Terminal"
set Tiedosto to the selection
do script "/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC -vvv " & Tiedosto & " --sub-track=1 --sout=\"#transcode{vcodec=mp2v,vb=1024,acodec=mpga,ab=128,soverlay}:standard{d st=/Users/Antti/Desktop/video.mpg,access=file}\""
end tell
The idea is that I could select a file from Finder, activate the script and the path of the selected file would be passed to the Terminal script as "Tiedosto".
Well, nothing happens... Any suggestions?
iMac Intel 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Your first problem is that you're getting the selection in Terminal.app, not the Finder, so you need to ask the Finder for the selection.
Then, the Finder will return a list of selected items. You'll need to extract items from this list before you can use them. You can either iterate through the items, or take the first item, depending on whether you want to support multiple items:

tell application "Finder"
set selectedItems to (get selection as alias list)
repeat with eachItem in selectedItems
set currentFilePath to quoted form of POSIX path of eachItem
-- now you can use 'currentFilePath' in your do shell script command
end repeat
end tell

The other option is to save the script as a droplet so that you can drag and drop files on the script icon. This is a more Mac-like experience and can easily be done by adding an 'on open (droppedFiles)' handler and iterating through the droppedFiles.
Note that when doing this kind of thing you should add additional checks to validate the item is of the correct type you expect (e.g. you don't want to process a selected folder, MS Word document, JPEG image, etc., etc.).

• Passing files in automator to a terminal command?

I would like to know if something is possible: I've used automator to sort through a large number of files for specific traits using the 'Filter Finder Items' action. Can I then pass these files, one by one, into a terminal command?
Specifically, I have a bunch of markdown files that I want to run through the markdown command in the terminal.
Thanks for any help,

automator has "run shell script" action. just add that action to the end of your wrokflow with the option to pass input as arguments.

• Passing file location as URL parameter for xml query

Hi all,
A quick question regarding using a parameter to set the source URL in an XML query template.
When assigning the URL, the static text works perfectly eg:
//<servername>/<folder>/samplefile.xml . The xml is returned as required.
However, we wish to call this from a BLS txn and set the source URL dynamically.
To test this we assigned //<servername>/<folder>/samplefile.xml to Parameter no 1 and insert [Param.1] in the source URL field. No luck.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Mark

Mark,
In BLS, the double slashes (escaping the single /) are only necessary if you are building the full http url string in the link editor.
If your XMLQuery template is something like http://localhost/Folder/Subfolder/[Param.1] then put in a default param value in the query template and make sure the query test works. Then configure (or reconfigure) this in your BLS transaction and generate the sample results. All you should have to do in BLS then is to assign your Transaction or Local property to the Param.1 link in your XMLQuery action block. All of the dynamic replacement and subsequent xml file retrieval should then be done by the XMLQuery itself.
If you can keep the majority of the URL in the XMLQuery itself and then just dynamically pass it the Param.1 piece it will be very easy to test and configure (also use localhost if the file lives on the xMII web server), but if you have to build the string external in BLS I would recommend using a combination of the expression editor and a Local property. If the Local string property contains the base of http://localhost/Folder/Subfolder/ (no quotes or character escaping needed for the default value of a string property) then just assign something like the following to your Param.1 property of the XMLQuery: Local.URLBase & "filename.xml" (a simple evaluate will confirm your efforts).

• How to spool file to where start script file located

I'm writing a sqlplus script, eg. runMe.sql, which is going to run in customer env, will generate some data files eg. result.csv.
By specify location such as 'spool /certain/path/on/disk/result.csv', I can spool to any path I want. However, my concern is below:
1. We gets many customers and the script might be run under different location.
2. I don't know where customer would save the script, furthermore, I don't want customer to input location manually every time.
3. Generally, customer would run the script something like "sqlplus username/password@sid @/certain/path/on/disk/runMe.sql". They don't want to pass any parameter at run time.
4. I wanna spool file to "/certain/path/on/disk" automatically, as a result, result.csv file would appear under same path with runMe.sql.
5. I tried "spool ./result.csv" but it navigate to where sqlplus session is running.
6. Also tried &0 etc, but make no sense.
Can anyone tell me how to obtain start running script file path in sqlplus script(runMe.sql) ? Just like access command parameters under Linux.
$0 is the name of the command
$1 first parameter
$2 second parameter
$3 third parameter etc. etc
$# total number of parameters
$@ all the parameters will be listed
Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for SQLPATH ?
A good and clear example by Paul @ https://forums.oracle.com/message/3727891
In this way your customer has to set one environment variable SQLPATH=/location/of/script/file/where/they/put/your/runMe.sql and just say :
spool %sqlpath%\result.csv
in your runMe.sql. So, runMe.sql and result.csv will be on SQLPATH location.

• How to pass values from single Databank file across different scripts?

Hi Guys,
I have a question regarding using single databank file across different scripts.
Lets say there 5 web service scripts and these are very generic scripts where the input/request xml schema of each script is parameterized without having any databank as script asset.
These 5 web service scripts are like library functions and so we dont want to attach any databank as script asset.
However I have a driver script to call all of these 5 library scripts and now I attach a databank (a .csv file) to the driver script as script asset. Say this .csv file has got 10 different columns with just single record/row.
As and when the function call goes to those 5 scripts i.e one by one, then based on the function call the corresponding columns are used and the data for those columns must be read.
Is there any solution to acheive this?
Faster help is highly appreciated.

Hi JB,
what i was looking for, was an approach to use a databank file (.csv file) in a parent script and then by reading that .csv file, the data should be moved from the parent script to individual child scripts.
The child scripts are very generic scripts and are like library functions which are not data dependent. they are fully parameterized and they dont have any sort of databank attached to them.
Now the question is if the databank has got 10 columns where first 3 columns belong to one child script, second 3 columns belong to 2nd child script and so on.
Then how do we pass the values from parent script to a child script and what is the best/recommended approach.

• Indesign server web service - where is the support to upload a file with the script and download the result?

Hi,
I am working on a POC that is supposed to convert indd files to pdf (i.e. using of course the indesign server). Basically I want to call the IDS Web Service (located on a different machine perhaps), pass in the input file, the conversion script and retrieve the result as part of the WebService call?
Browsing the documentation, examples, etc in the SDK, I couldn't see how the above can be achieved without the client handling the file transfer. Surely I must be missing something ...
thanks
Chris

What do you mean with POC?
InDesign Server is too precious (i.e. license cost) to waste its time with file transfers.
For a smaller scale, let a separate process (some http or smb server) on the same server hardware handle the files - so that the InDesign Server can access them on the fastest local volume.
If you plan for bigger, use a dedicated server for file sharing (your choice of SMB, NFS or whatever), where the input files are prepared by the client process, so that your load balancer can immediately point the next free instance of the InDesign server farm to the file. In that case be prepared for some try and error - high speed file sharing can be tricky with files written from one side not yet visible or incomplete to the other side, locking problems, Unicode file name trouble, unexpected time stamps and so forth.
Btw, there is also an InDesign Server forum which would be more appropriate for such discussions.

There is escaping in the for loops which is necessary in a bat file and not needed at the command line.
It seem to be that any command spanning more than one line fails. Fail? The example that gave shouldn't fail. It should simply run both echos.As I understand it, the command sequence
@echo off
goto XXX
echo out
:XXX
echo last
should just output 'last' and not 'out so if it prints both 'out' and 'last' then in my view it 'fails'. Am I missing something?

Makes me even more pleased that I work mainly with Linux.Looking up syntax - what about getopts (bourne and korn)? You can also create 'functions', which can be defined later (if I recall correctly) in the script and called multiple times. I don't know how that would work streaming it in.I don't know about consequences of the streaming approach forward definitions in 'bourne' and 'korn' though I was not aware that 'bourne' allowed them. For 'bash' where forward definitions do not seem to be allowed (could I be mistaken in this?) then using Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("bash", null, new File(System.getProperty("user.home")));the following very simple 'bash' script (which contains loops, if statements and functions but no goto or forward definitions) can be executed without problems - # Simple bash script
function sayHello {
echo "Hello" $1
sayHello "World" ;
for i in $( ls /tmp ); do
echo file - $i

do
echo "seq" $i
done
i=0
while [  $i -lt 6 ]; do
if [ $i -eq 4 ]; then

else
echo "else" $i
fi
let i=i+1
done
i=12
until [  $i -lt 10 ]; do
echo "until" $i
let i-=1
doneIn the past, I have also published examples of how to run Perl scripts using the same basic approach. The heart of the examples is final String perlScript = "#!/bin/perl\n" +
"print \"PID $$\\n\";\n" +
"print \"UID $<\\n\";\n" +

"print \"\\n\".'%ENV'.\"\\n\";\n" +
"foreach (keys %ENV) {\n" +

"}\n" +
"$x = theAnswerToTheUltimateQuestion();\n" +
"print \"\\nThe answer to the ultimate question is ... '$x'\\n\";\n" +
"sub theAnswerToTheUltimateQuestion()\n" +
"{\n" +
"    return 3*2*7;\n" +
"}\n" +
"sub factorial()\n" +
"{\n" +
"    my ($n) = @_;\n" +
"    return ($n > 1) ? $n * factorial($n-1) : 1;\n" +
"}\n";
System.out.println(perlScript);
* The perl source can be from any InputStream. Here I use a
* ByteArrayInputStream just as a demonstration.
final InputStream perlSource = new ByteArrayInputStream(perlScript.getBytes());
* The '-' indicates that the Perl script comes from stdin. The "a","b","c" etc
* are the command line arguments passed to the Perl script.
final String[] command =
"perl", "-", "5", "6", "7", "8", "9", "10"
final Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);piping the 'perlSource' stream to the process stdin.
This runs as expected on both Linux (FC9 and Ubuntu 8.04) and on Windows using Active Perl.
Please don't take my use of a String to hold the Perl script to mean that I in any way endorse this approach - I just wanted a simple means to create a self-contained example.
>
And the c shell has a goto also.One day I might find some time and investigate 'c' shell goto in this context - since I have not used csh for at least 8 years I am very rusty.
I can't say that the 'streaming' approach will work with all Linux shells but I can say that on Linux I have had no problem with Perl and Bash. If anyone needs to use the 'streaming' approach with another shell then it takes just a few minutes to setup a test harness. If any problems are found then people can always resort to the 'Plan B' approach.
I am still pleased I work mainly with Linux and Unix.

• How to run a Python Script in Terminal ?

Hello,
how can you run a Python Script in Terminal ? (OS X 10.4.5 - not OS X Server)
It´s about this Sript:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060225091102170
Thanks
iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

While this isn't really specific at all to OS X Server (please keep your questions in the "Mac OS X Server" topic area related to OS X Server, it helps you and everyone else
Now then:
Please note the comments of "robg" (the site-"mom"/host):
"You'll want to save the script without the .txt extension, and remember to make it executable with chmod a+x site2template.sh
Save the file to your Desktop, and remove the ".txt" from the name so it's named: site2template.sh
then in the Terminal, issue:
chmod +x ~/Desktop/site2template.sh
"~" is shortcut for "the current user's (my) home directory"
From there you can simply use:
~/Desktop/site2template.sh /your/site
But, far better to:
choose a location to save the script, typically /usr/local/bin:
make the directory if you don't have one:
sudo mkdir /usr/local/bin
sudo cp ~/Desktop/site2template.sh /usr/local/bin/
then adjust the permissions:
sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/site2template.sh
You may want to add /usr/local/bin to your path.
cat /etc/profile
and if you don't see it, add:
PATH="/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin"
export PATH
ie:
sudo cp /etc/profile /etc/profile.bak
(back it up to play safe)
sudo pico /etc/profile
and add
:/usr/local/bin
to the path info.
Save it (ctl w)
exit (ctl x)
then type: source /etc/profile
(start learning vi or emacs eventually)
and you'll be able to run:
site2template /path\ to/your/site/to\ convert

• Problem while passing parameter to shell script which sends email-Ora Apps

Hi,
I have a pl/sql package which will call a shell script program.The shell script program is written in order to send the invoice hold details of AP as a mail.The parameters to this program are passed in the pl/sql package.
The shell script program has
5 parameters namely
to - email
from - email
hold id - which is a number
hold name - varchar2( free text)
hold reason - varchar2( free text)
the shell script looks as below.
FROM_EMAIL=`echo $1|cut -f9 -d " "|sed 's/\"//g'`
echo "From email id is $FROM_EMAIL" -- From email
TO_EMAIL=`echo $1|cut -f10 -d " "|sed 's/\"//g'`
echo "To Email id is $TO_EMAIL" -- to email
PARAM0=`echo $1 | awk '{print $11}'|sed -e "s/\"//g"`
echo "Param0: $PARAM0" -- hold id
PARAM1=`echo "$1" | cut -d" " -f12-| sed -e "s/\" \"/\"^\"/g" | awk -F'^' '{print $1}'|sed -e "s/\"//g"`
echo "Param1: $PARAM1" -- hold name
PARAM2=`echo "$1" | cut -d" " -f13-| sed -e "s/\" \"/\"^\"/g" | awk -F'^' '{print $1}'|sed -e "s/\"//g"`
echo "Param2: $PARAM2" -- hold reason
the values that am passinf to this program are if suppose
from email ---- [email protected]
to email [email protected]
12345 ------ hold id
test hold name ------ hold name
test hold reason ------- hold reason
The output for the above parameters is as follows
from email ---- [email protected]
to email [email protected]
12345 ------ hold id
test hold name ------ hold name
hold name --------hold reason (a part of hold name parameter is displayed as hold reason.The reason being in param2 we used cut which is cutting from 13.
the problem here is since param1 being free text we cannot predict at what position the parameter ends.i mean there might be a single word or more than 2 words in that parameter seperated by space. the question here is ... is there anyway that we can specify dynamically from which location the param2 should fetch the value.
can we use some delimiter to identify the end of param1 and start of param2.If so... how can it be written in this scenario.
Thanks in Advance.

As I see, all parameters are merged into 1 at shell script.
Please do as follow:
1- Modify your shell script as followed:
echo "From email id is $1" -- From email
echo "To Email id is $2" -- to email
echo "Param0: $3" -- hold id
echo "Param1: $4" -- hold name
echo "Param2: $5" -- hold reason
2- rename your shell script file with .prog extension : CUSTOM_NAME.prog
3- perform the following command at custom file location:
ln -s $FND_TOP/bin/fndcpesr CUSTOM_NAME
This approach will seperate your parameters and then it will be more easier to manipulate them.

• File Location in UTL_FILE

Hi,
I'm using UTL_FILE and I've asked my DBA to configure a location on the network as UTL_FILE's default file location, say, "c:\utl" on oraserver. Now, how do I pass this to UTL_FILE.FOPEN ? Do I say :
X := UTL_FILE.FOPEN( 'C:\UTL', 'TEST', 'w' );
or like this :
X := UTL_FILE.FOPEN( '\\oraserver\UTL', 'TEST', 'w' );
Any help would be really appreciated.
Regards,
Alex

Alex,
the correct form is:
X := UTL_FILE.FOPEN( 'C:\UTL', 'TEST', 'w' );
Greetings,

• How to update XML file through UCCX script ?

Hi,
I have an UCCX script with MENU step. One of the step is for technical support team. When caller chose this step, information about date and time of the call and calling number should be recorded on a XML file located on the web server.
This XML is uploaded into the web server , but I don't know how to update it through UCCX script.
Here is how the XML file looks like:

CALL LOG

Support Call log

2011-08-24 14:56:39 - 00044 123 123 123

</item

Any idea?
Thanks,
O

Hi
The 'keyword transform' step uses the template XML file to generate the actual XML file you want to post... the template would be a plain text file uploaded to the repository, and would look like so:

CALL LOG
Support Call log
1
%%calldatetime%% - %%clinumber%%
Now - if you had that bit of XML, with correct time/number in it - have you verified know that you can definately just post that XML to a certain URL to get it on the server? Check with whoever manages that server exactly what you need to do to get it to appear - then worry about how you do that from UCCX. It may not be a matter of posting up that XML, you may need it in a different format or something..

• W2K8 & Win7 - Setting system-wide Trusted file locations not working

Win 2008 Network, Win 7 workstations.
RE: Setting system-wide trusted file locations
I have an application using Flash stored on a network location that accesses other files in the same location. This causes the security warning "The following local application... is trying to communicate with this internet-enabled..." I can add the location to the trusted sites in the Setting Manager and the warning goes away. It is not practical however to do this on every machine on the network. I have tried the FlashPlayerTrust directory and mms.cfg file and neither of these seem to work. Is there a trick to getting the FlashPlayerTrust directory to work properly. If I could get this working, I could create a script that copies this file to all machines on the network.
Any help you be greatly appreciated.

Hi Todd,
Can you please provide just a little more detail?
* When you say "accessess", what API is being used? Are the paths to the other files relative, file: URI http: URI, other?
* In the FlashPlayerTrust directory, are you using the same path notation as appears in the Settings Manager? What's a sample {filename}.{ext} being used?
Thanks!

• Changing swap file location on tray-loader iMacs

This is not a question, but something I discovered that makes my old tray-loader iMac (the oldest iMac models) run Mac OS X much better.
As you may know, these oldest iMacs have an 8GB size limit on the boot volume. The largest stock drive on these iMacs was 6GB. That means if your upgraded hard drive is larger than 8GB, it must be partition so that the first partition is under 8GB (7.78GB on my iMac), and it must be the boot partition where the OS is installed (whether it's Mac OS X or 9).
In my case, I have a roomy 120GB hard drive (I believe the useable limit on these iMacs is 128GB). The first partition is just under 8GB, the second partition is the rest of the space, about 104GB. I have used every trick out there to move files (such as the iTunes music folder and most of my user/documents files) off to the second partition, to make free space on the boot partition as large as possible. So I have 3.5GB free on my 8GB boot partition. This is about 40% of the volume's total space so it seems pretty good, until you realize that most recent Macs have much more than the TOTAL 8GB I have, as free space on the boot volume. Mac OS X was just not designed to work well with small boot volumes...
Mac OS X uses the free space on the boot volume for its virtual memory "swap file." Considering these old iMacs max out at 512MB of RAM, virtual memory is being used quite a bit. But since space on the boot volume is very limited, low RAM and lack of free space can lead to performance issues. Here's what I observed. When I initially started up my iMac, I had about 3.5GB of free space. Over time, as I used more and more apps, that free space would diminish until I had only about 600MB remaining (as reported by a Finder window). At the same time, I noticed performance getting bogged down and more "chugging" sounds coming from the hard-working hard drive.
I've known about changing location of the swap file, but never tried it until recently. During the Mac OS X boot process, the Mac sets the location of the swap file. By default, the swap file resides on the boot volume (I believe most other Unix-based systems use a dedicated "swap partition" for the swap file). Since most recent Macs have large drives set up as one partition (and there is plenty of free space), and since many users have upgraded their RAM (and virtual memory is not as critical), swap file location is usually not an issue, and there is certainly no need to change the swap file location. However, on my iMac with an 8GB limit on the boot volume and 512MB of RAM, it made a noticeable difference.
I found one set of procedures on the web that was much better than the others I found for changing the location of the swap file.
http://www.math.columbia.edu/~bayer/OSX/swapfile/
On this page, there are two choices for Panther users. I used the one that works for both Panther and Tiger, because it appeared to me to be more straightforward. The author intentionally keeps the instructions somewhat technical to discourage users who are not technically inclined. I don't consider myself to be too "geeky," but I can follow instructions and type a few commands in Terminal.
After I changed the swap file location to a large mostly empty volume, I noticed much better performance when I have many large apps open at the same time. Performance no longer degrades over time, and the free space on my boot volume remains a constant 3.6GB.
The reason for this post is to share this information. Some users of these old iMacs may be noticing the same issues I had. This is a possible solution. However, if everything is OK with your set up, there is no reason to change the swap file location. If you try it, be sure to take the usual data backup precautions.
If anyone else has experience with changing swap file location, please post your comments here.
