Passing flash array to flash sprite

Hi,
I am trying to pass a flash array like [{x:1,y:2},{x:1,y:2},{x:3,y:5}] from a flash sprite to Director lingo and back to another flash sprite. In director all looks fine when passing it back to the second sprite but the flash trace command just gives me undefined values. Can't I do this in lingo?
in lingo:
    put " flashAry.length " &  flashAry.length
    flashObject.DrawAry(flashAry,"testxy")
Output window:
-- " flashAry.length 23.0000"
in ActionScript
    function DrawAry(points:Array,test){
    trace(">DrawAry " + points + " " + points.length + " >" + test + "<")
Output window:
-- >DrawAry undefined undefined >testxy<

Had a very similar problem and found a solution...
Hope this helps....
-- This GETS an array from Flash to Director
-- 'myFlashArray' is the name of the array in your Flash file
-- 'flaArray' is the new list created in Director
-- And obviously, the flash file is on sprite 1
  flaArray = convert(#list, sprite(1).myFlashArray)
  put flaArray
-- This SENDS a Director list to flash (as an array)
-- 'zz' is just a temporary variable so the script is easier to read
-- 'dirList' is your Director List
-- 'myNewFlashArray' is the name of the newly created array in your flash file
-- again, the flash file is on sprite 1 in this case
  dirList = ["item 1","item 2","item 3"]
  zz = convert(#flashObjectArray, dirList).toString()
  sprite(1).createVariable(#myNewFlashArray, zz )
NOTE: I'm using an undocumented 'convert' function that is only available in Director 10.1.1 onwards...

  • Flash sprites user response

    When integrating Flash with Director - I have always in the
    past done the
    following:
    on (rollOver) {
    getURL ("lingo:cursor 280");
    on (rollOut) {
    getURL ("lingo:cursor 0");
    on (release) {
    getURL("event: gotoQ3PDF");
    I have always done the above as flash objects do not respond
    to mouse
    events - on rollOver and rollOut the basic, single lingo
    command to change
    the cursor, then on release I am executing an event (to
    perform multiple
    lingo commands) restoring cursor, goto frame/marker, etc...
    Has anything changed recently where you can do anytype of
    "global"
    command/script the does this across the board or does it
    still have to be
    hand-coded for each button in flash?? Our London office is
    doing some
    elements for us (in the US) for a CD project where there is a
    number of
    buttons in multiple flash movies....
    Thanks in advance!!!

    Excellent! Yes -multiple buttons (menu's) within individuals
    swf's
    Much better approach - as I am currently manually scripting
    individual
    events for each button - on(release)...
    Appreciate it!

  • Pass flash variables to server - the best way?

    I am using URLVariables at the moment to pass flash variables to the server via php script and update a database rows.
    var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
    At the moment around 9 variables are sent which are then updated in the mysql db.
    I have read that calls to the database via php are the main source of traffic or at least one of them. I am talking about 100 - 500 concurrent users.
    Obvously I am going to need expert help medium term but I would like to give things a go myself.
    I have read about amfPHP but I don't seem to understand it too well.
    Also, I can cut down the amount of php calls per user as I have them all over the place for lots of games and mini exercises.
    BUT is it possible to get those nine variables into an object and pass the object. Would one object be faster than passing 9 variables and would that object be placed into one cell of the mysql databse.
    What would that look like? At the moment I can read my db easily but if there is an object in there, how do you read that?
    Is that what serializning is? Passing an object and all the data is converted to binary etc...
    As you see I'm a little lost.
    Thanks in advance.

    Just my two cents.
    URLVariables is one of the ways to construct url query. There is no difference in doing it either way (second way is faster):
    var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.google.com/page.html");
    var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
    variables.var0 = 3;
    variables.var1 = "blah";
    request.data = variables;
    sendToURL(request);
    OR JUST
    sendToURL(new URLRequest("http://www.google.com/page.html?var0=3&var1=blah"));
    I guess object serialization will be less efficient because, I suspect, it will be a larger string and it is much more processor intensive of both Flash and server side.
    I also suspect that http servers have a very efficient way to parse and process requests and variables that come with it - after all this is server's first and the most important duty.
    My point is that I don't believe there is anything better than sending data with query string unless there is a need for obfuscation.
    As a proof - the fact that large volume and frequent updates sites like advertising servers never use anything but plain old query strings attests to the above points.
    As far as DB updates speed goes - it has nothing to do with the means info is sent but rather is a consequence of server and DB performance aspects. It's just a matter of money :-)

  • Flash sprite in Director: slow, slow!

    It's not a new problem but maybe there's a new solution?...
    I have a Flash game in a Director projector. The Flash games
    works fine by itself (not embedded in Director), but inside
    Director, everything runs much slower. Is there any ways to speed
    things up?
    Thanks
    Serge

    Yea Flash tends to run a bit slower in director, be sure the
    default
    direct to stage flash member property is set.
    Mx 2004 has an updated flash xtra that runs a little more
    effeciently,
    with an option to run multiple flash sprites in the same
    memory space.
    There's a downloadable director update for flash 8.0

  • Flash sprite has to be visible (from YOU !) in authoring mode to   work !

    If this can help (and if you can confirm !).
    I already went through the trouble that you can't put a Flash
    sprite off
    stage otherwise you loose control over it (you have to keep
    one pixel on
    stage), but this is more tricky :
    I suddenly had my Flash sprites working only in projector
    mode and I
    discovered that lower right corner of the stage was not
    visible (stage
    window was resized), which is where I hide my Flash sprites.
    As soon as
    I could see the corner, problem was gone in authoring mode !
    PJ

    Why not make your FlashSprite invisible?
    Or change it's z-index and put it behind everything
    else?

  • I-beam cursor in flash sprites

    I'm having a problem with the I-beam cursor dissapearing in
    text fields in flash sprites. I'm using Director MX and flash MX. I
    see that this problem is fixed in the latest version of Director,
    but my client requries WinNT4 support, so I'm stuck using MX. Is
    there any way I can fix this, or at least minimise it?

    sussed it. i'd dimmed the screen brightness with 3rd party prog. Shades.
    colour change of cursor was affected by that, turning cursor white. whack the brightness up and all becomes normal again.
    hope that helps someone.

  • Flash sprite not updating

    Is there a technique to force a flash sprite to refresh?
    Basically when I send the flash movie to another frame eg -
    sprite(16).goToAndStop(6) it seems like the code in frame 6 of my
    flash movie doesn't execute until i mouse over the flash sprite!
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks

    What action are you using to tell sprite 16 to run? Is it a
    mouse event?

  • Flash Sprite Convert #BitmapData Wrong Type Error

    When using a flash sprite to convert an image to #BitmapData I get a "Wrong Type" error. Does this only work with specific image types? Any ideas on what might cause this error? The image I am trying to convert is from a bitmap member.
    ie.
    bmp_data = flash_sprite.convert( #BitmapData, member( "some bmp" ).image )

    Try a little error checking:
    im = member("some bmp").image
    put im
    put flash_sprite
    bmp_data = flash_sprite.convert( #BitmapData, im )
    put bmp_data

    yes you can add TextArea to Sprite
    set the x,y, width and height of the TextArea object and added to Sprite using
    spriteObj.addChild(textareaObj);

  • Detect a flash sprite

    Hello:
    I need to detect when I click over a flash sprite what sprite is.
    With bitmap no problem: put the clickon
    But with swf I can't detect when clicked.
    Can you help me please?

    Perhaps a combination of clickLoc and the point.inside(rect) function would do what you ask.

  • What is the best way of dealing with an "implicit coercion" of an array to a sprite?

    Hello everyone!
         With continued help from this forum I am getting closer to having a working program. I look forward to being able to help others like myself once I finish learning the AS3 ropes.
         I will briefly explain what I am trying to achieve and then follow it up with my question.
    Background
         I have created a 12 x 9 random number grid that populates each cell with a corresponding image based on each cell's numeric value. I have also created a shuffle button that randomizes the numbers in the grid. The problem I am running into is getting my button-click event to clear the current images off the grid in order to assign new ones (i.e. deleting the display stack objects in order to place news ones in the same locations).
    Question
         My question is this: what is the best way to handle an implicit coercion from an array to a sprite? I have pasted my entire code below so that you can see how the functions are supposed to work together. My trouble apparently lies with not being able to use an array value with a sprite (the sprite represents the actual arrangement of the grid on the display stack while the array starts out as a number than gets assigned an image which should be passed to the sprite).

         Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Rothrock,
         Thank you for the reply. Let me address a few things here in the hopes of allowing you (and others) to better understand my reasoning for doing things in this manner (admittedly, there is probably a much better/easier approach to what I am trying to accomplish which is one of the things I hope to learn/discover from these posts).
         The elements inside my "imageArray" are all individual graphics that I had imported, changed their type to movie clips using .Sprite as their base class (instead of .MovieClip) and then saved as classes. The reason I did this was because the classes could then be referenced via "getDefinitionByName" by each cell value that was being passed to it. In this grid every number from 1 to 9 appears randomly 12 times each (making the 108 cells which populate the grid). I did not, at the time (nor do I now), know of a better method to implement for making sure that each image appears in the cell that has the corresponding value (i.e. every time a cell has the value of 8 then the custom graphic/class "skin8" will be assigned to it so that the viewer will be able to see a more aesthetically pleasing numerical representation, that is to say a slightly more fancy looking number with a picture behind it). I was advised to store these images in an array so that I could destroy them when I reshuffle the grid in order to make room for the new images (but I probably messed up the instructions).
         If the "drawCell" function only returns a sprite rather than the image array itself, doesn't that mean that my "eraseCells" function won't be able to delete the array's children as their values weren't first returned to the global variable which my erasing function is accessing?
         As for the function name "drawCells," you have to keep in mind that a) my program has been redesigned in stages as I add new functionality/remove old functionality (such as removing text labels and formatting which were originally in this function) and b) that my program is called "Blanko."
         I will try and attach an Illustrator exported JPG file that contains the image I am using as the class "skin7" just to give you an example of what I'm trying to use as labels (although it won't let me insert it here in this post, so I will try it in the next post).
    Thank you for your help!

  • How do I pass an array of structs to a C function using the dll flexible prototype adapter?

    What I want to do is pass into a C dll function a variably sized Array of structs of type TPS_Data. My Code compiles but when I run it in TestStand, I get an error -17001; Program Error. "Cannot allocate 0 size buffer Error in parameter 2, 'OpenFrdData'."
    I've allocated the Array of structs, and all of the information is there before I call my function, so is it my prototype? Or am I asking too much of the DLL Flexible Prototype Adapter to pass an Array of Structs?
    I can pass in a single struct of type TPS_Data and that works, but not an array.
    Here's the relevent code:

    TPS_Data DataRecord;
    } TPS_DataArray;
    long __declspec(dllexport) __stdcall OpenDialog (CAObjHandle Context, TPS_DataArray *TpsData[], const char *psFaultStr, char *sComments, const int nCount);

    OK,
    I can pass the data to the DLL function, using the following types:
    typedef struct StringArrayType
    char string[10][256];
    } StringArray;
    typedef struct MultiStringArrayType
    StringArray Record[10];
    } MultiStringArray;
    void __declspec(dllexport) __stdcall ATP_TestStructPassing(StringArray Strings)
    return;
    void __declspec(dllexport) __stdcall ATP_TestMultiStructPassing(MultiStringArray *Strings)
    return;
    But when the MultiStruct function Exits, TestStand reports an Error:
    -17501 "Unexpected Operating System Error" Source: 'TSAPI'
    There doesn't seem to be a way around this, and once the error occurs, I have to force quit TestStand. I've included the sequence file, and the dll code can be compiled from the fun
    ctions shown above.
    Any thoughts on how to get around this error would be greatly appreciated.

  • Passing an array in a for loop to a procedure

    I am trying to pass an array in a cursor for loop to a procedure which performs a table insert using the array's contents. Somehow I am missing something, or it is not possible. The compile error states: PLS-00306: wrong number or types in call to 'insert_address' I checked to be sure I am creating the arrays in both cases from similar data objects. Both address and work_address_table contain the same 4 columns with the same data types.
    create or replace package work_address as
    FUNCTION populate_address return boolean;
    procedure insert_address(in_address IN work_address_table%ROWTYPE);
    end work_address;
    create or replace package body work_address as
    function populate_address return boolean is
    cursor c1 is
    select 'H' as header,
    street1 as street
    city as city,
    NULL as state
    from address
    where city = 'HANOVER';
    TYPE addressT IS TABLE OF c1%ROWTYPE INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    rec1 addressT;
    BEGIN
    OPEN c1;
    FETCH c1 BULK COLLECT INTO rec1 LIMIT 500;
    FOR i IN 1..rec1.count LOOP
    rec1(i).state := 'US'
    insert_address(rec1(i));
    exit when c1%notfound;
    END LOOP;
    CLOSE c1;
    return TRUE;
    END populate_address;
    PROCEDURE insert_address(in_address IN work_address_table%ROWTYPE) IS
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO work_address_table
    VALUES (in_address.header,
    in_address.street,
    in_address.city,
    in_address.state);
    COMMIT;
    END insert_address;
    END work address;
