Passing Resultsets to JSP

Hello,
I want to know how to represent the results of a databse search via a JSP. Initially, I had all of the databse code(example shown below) in the JSP just to get it working. I now want to move the code into a JavaBean (I know there are numerous other ways but as I am still learning I just want to use a Worker Bean). Whilst the code was in the JSP it was easy to display the data using rs.next() etc etc, but now the code is in the bean how do I pass a resultset back to the JSP. Do I use getProperty some how?
Any help is appreciated
Cheers
Mitch
<%
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
Connection dbaCon = DriverManager.getConnection
("jdbc:odbc:MileEnd", "", "");
String template = "UPDATE PlayerInfo SET Block = ? WHERE LastName = ? and FirstName = ? and password = ?";
PreparedStatement pstmt = dbaCon.prepareStatement(template);
pstmt.setBoolean(1, state);
pstmt.setString(2, lastName);
pstmt.setString(3, firstName);
pstmt.setString(4, password);
pstmt.executeUpdate();
if (pstmt != null)
pstmt.close();
if (dbaCon != null)
dbaCon.close();
%>

Your example will not generate any ResultSet, it gives you an int value saying that, how many rows have been updated.
int rowsUpdated=pstmt.executeUpdate();
return rowsUpdated;
Suppose if you have a query like 'select a,b,c from table_name where some_condition', then you will get a ResultSet. Instead of returning the ResultSet as it is to the jsp, it is better to put them in an array or Vector or some collection object and return that object. So that you can immediately close the resultset and release the db resources.
ResultSet rs=st.executeQuery();
Vector v = new Vector();
while(rs.next())
String str[]=new String[3];
str[0]=rs.getString("a"); //or str[0]=rs.getString(1);
str[1]=rs.getString("b");
str[2]=rs.getString("c");
v.add(str);
// close all the database resources and then return the vector.
return v;
In your jsp, you can get this vector and display the results.
for(int i=0;i<v.size();i++)
String str[]=(String[])v.elementAt(i);
// display str[0],str[1] and str[2]
Hope this helps.

  • URGENT: Passing Array from JSP to a Stored Procedure

    Hi,
    Can some one please help me understanding how can I pass array from JSP page to a stored procedure in database.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jatinder

    Thanks.
    I tried ArrayExampla.java and was successful in passing array values to the stored database procedure.
    How can I use this class in JSP? Like I have first JSP where in I will collect input from the user and then submit it to the second JSP - that needs to call the ArrayExample.java to pass the values as array to the database.
    How should I call this java code in my second JSP?
    Thanks in advance.

    Help is needed.

    can you put that stuff in the session context in the first page, then pull it out in the second page?

  • Passing variables to jsp

    In what all ways we can pass variables to jsp??
    I got one arraylist in my servlet(controller) and i have to send it to jsp page(view)...
    one way of doing it is trough "session", is there any other way??
    if yes .. which one is better??

    Hi,
    You can store your variable in 3 scopes in servlet and in 4 scopes in JSP
    In Servlets you can do it in the following ways.
    request scope
    session scope
    context scope
    In Jsp you can do it in the following ways
    request scope
    session scope
    context scope
    and page scope
    Request scope means, you can maintain the state only when the request is alive.
    Session scope means, you can maintain the state only when the session is alive
    similarly context , you can maintain the state only when the context is alive.
    page scope is just for page.
    I hope , you want these details. :)
    bye for now

  • Passing parameters from JSP to Batch file

    hi,
    i had a small problem regarding passing parameter from JSP to a batch file.
    My program is like this..........
    I wrote a batch file which opens and pings a remote system. Code looks like this......
    ping %1 -t
    which takes one argument and named this as "a.bat"
    The corresponding JSP page has lot of links which contains IP Addressess. From JSP page, i am calling "a.bat" so that it will open and start pinging corresponding IP Address. So i want to know how can i pass the corresponding IP from a JSP to batch file so that it start pinging remote machine........... can any body help me in this regard??
    Thanks in Advance.
    cheers,
    Sudhakar.

    it might be a permissions problem for the process itself. i once fought for some time with a java app that would mysteriously exit (no exceptions or any VM vomit) i finally discovered that the application was killed when the screen saver came on. just a regular screen saver mind you.
    at any rate i did see this issue and other strange ones like it reported here and there, i think i once say a bug report here on it but I can't seem to find it now. i believe this is fixed in 1.4.
    this of course may not be of much help to you.
    the two workarounds i found were 1) to turn off my screen-saver, 2) set up the program as an NT service. for the NT service i used this stuff http://www.kcmultimedia.com/
    so my suggestion for weird process permission problems on NT would be to try and make it into a service.

  • Passing vectors into JSP from Servlet and passing data back to Servlet

    I have been building an MVC application.
    It has a controller which instantiates classes and evokes methods to
    populate vectors. These vectors are then passed into a JSP. This part of the application works fine.
    What I am having trouble with is a new JSP I have designed; this will
    display the data that is actioned by the FORM action. This is actioned
    based on the Search criteria entered by the user. Based on this a further vector is populated and brought back to the JSP as a vector
    and this is rendered via the TABLE tag. Again this works fine.
    Against each of the rows displayed, I have a print checkbox which can be checked by the user. On checking the records they want to print, they should then hint a Print button which should go back to the Servlet and print the data. THIS IS WHERE I HAVE THE PROBLEM. On going
    back to the servlet the checkbox values are not displayed, rather
    the values that initially populate the JSP. How do I get these new values back into the vector and hence accessible from the Servlet.
    Any help with be very much appreciated.
    Chris

    Thanks for this.
    Just to clarify I am not using Struts.
    What I am having difficulties with is the fact that:
    I can't get the checked values back to the Servlet - they keep the values they have in the bean - so as part of instantiating the bean class I set the value of the item to 'off'. The user will then check
    the checkbox which should presumbably set the value to 'on'. This isn't happening because the setter method of the bean is not evoked again
    because I don't come into this JSP again - the Servlet has finished here
    and now needs to print the records. It can't do this because as
    far as it is concerned nothing has changed since it last passed through
    the vector to the JSP.
    Even when I do the following:
    Enumeration paramNames = request.getParameterNames();
    String param = null;
    while (paramNames.hasMoreElements())
    param=(String)paramNames.nextElement();
    System.out.println("parameter " + param + " is " +
    request.getParameter(param));
    what comes back is the valus of 'off' as opposed to 'on'.
    The other thing is that 'request.getParameterNames()' only works
    with the first record in the vector, i.e. it doesn't fetch any other
    records that are rendered in the <TABLE> tag.
    In desperation is there anybody out there who can help me.
    Thanks
    Chris
    I am going to assume you are using a MVC framework
    like Struts or very similar (I am assuming that from
    the language you are using).
    When the servlet passes the vector back to the JSP
    page and you render the HTML that is passed back the
    client your Vector is gone. The Vector is not
    available at the HTML level that is being viewed at
    the browser.
    When the user selects the checkboxes and submits the
    page (by clicking the print button) the controller
    servlet (called ActionServlet in Struts, yours maybe
    called something else) forwards the request to the
    appropriate JavaBean and Servlet to process the
    request. Either the JavaBean has to recreate the
    Vector (not recommended) or the processing Servlet can
    (better). You can do this by recreating the Vector
    from scratch for the HttpRequest parameters or, at the
    time of the initial request, saving Vector to a
    session and then updating with the data you get back
    from the client (again from the HttpRequest
    parameters).
    Either way you have to work with
    HttpRequest.getParameter().

  • "Help Needed" passing ResultSet data to JList having JCheckBox  !!!

    hi every body I am facing this problem since two days I tried but could't get correctly,I am new to java and I need to pass the result set data from the database to a JList having JCheckBox
    I tried but could't get it
    please do help me out, please

    hello
    try this to pass the recordset to the jlist
    String strlist[];// string array to store the resultsvalues
    JList tempList;//list
    protected void getList()
         Connection conn = null;
         try

              conn = DriverManager.getConnection ("jdbc:odbc:tablename", "", "");
    resultSet = ----------
    strlist= new String[delSecCnt];
         int i = 0;
         while (resultSet.next())
         // Get the table name
         tempList[i] = resultSet.getString(3);
              i++;
         resultSet.close();
         conn.close();
         catch (Exception e)
              tempList = new JList();
              for(int i=0;i < strList.length; i++)
              tempList.add(strList,i);
    //or if you want to use directly the values of recordset
    tempList.add(recordSet[3]);
    in this code i am using a string to store the results values and then passing it to the list.

  • Passing parameters between JSP and Servlet

    The scenario is as follows:
    There is a JSP page that sends a string as a hidden parameter to a servlet:
    <input type="hidden" name=<%= Book.NAME %> value=<%= book.getName() %> >
    In the servlet there is a print statement that checks the parameter value:
    System.out.println("Book name: "+request.getParameter(Book.NAME));
    The problem is as follows: if the name of the book consists of more than one word
    such as "Servlets and JSP", the print statement will print only Servlet.
    If the JSP page passes a string directly as shown here:
    <input type="hidden" name="Test" value="Test String" >
    The servlet will print the complete string: Test String
    The same problem appears if the string is passed between two JSP pages.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Basil Mahdi

    You might want to try
    <input type="hidden" name="<%= Book.NAME %>" value="<%=URLEncode.encode(book.getName(), "UTF-8")%>" >This will take care of any wierd un-url friendly charcters that might appear in the book titles such as the ' or " which may be the problem.

  • Passing values between jsp and php

    hi there, is it possible to pass values between jsp and
    php? i really need to find out the way if there is
    any. thanks in advance
    -azali-

    Yes, there are a few ways to do this.
    1) Think about using Cookies.
    2) Maybe use a Redirect passing the values in the Query string.
    3) Retain the data in a repository in the back end.
    4) Using Hidden fields within your pages.
    I am sure you can use these Idea's for a base to develop other methods on how to pass values back and forth from JSP -> PHP and vice versa.

  • How to pass value from jsp to java bean

    I have huge problem . How to pass value from jsp value to java bean.Please replay me soon

    Use the <jsp:setProperty> tag. There are several ways to use it. The one you probably want is:
    <jsp:setProperty name="bean_name"  property="property_name"  value="the_value_you_want_to_set"/>

  • Pass ArrayList to jsp and display first index of resultset?

    Is it possible for me to pass an ArrayList to a jsp, and display the each resultset stored in the ArrayList by the ArrayList index?
    The code below gets passed two paramaters. An invorg, and item. It then creates resultset based upon the Object and puts the results into an ArrayList.
    The resultset returned varies, but the largest resultset that I have received back has not been bigger thatn 10 resultset rows, and the largest number of columns has been 27 columns.
    I would then like to pass the whole ArrayList to the jsp and display the contents for each row based on the index it is on.

    Your arraylist object should be a list of inventory bean objects and then, If you are using struts, you could use logic:iterate tags.. or something equivalent.. you could use forEach in jstl..

  • Sample code with more than one ResultSet in JSP

    Hi
    Can anyone give me sample JSP code using crystal reports JRC with more than one ResultSets which works, since mine always seem to be giving error .
    Thank you

    You can access the JRC samples from SDN in the Business Objects Portal.  The link to them can be found [here.|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006008982008E/crxi_r2_jrc_web_smpl.zip]  There is a sample called jrc_resultset_datasource that shows how to pass a result set to a report; you can use this and modify it to allow another result set to be passed in.
    As a note, if you are having issues and believe it is your code, start with the sample and take small steps when adding new functionality so that you can determine where things go wrong.

  • Returning ResultSets to jsp

    Hi,
    I'm using a javabean that returns a resultset from oracle and i need that resultset to execute another query so i can return the data to a jsp. My problem is it will only execute through a while loop once as i have passed it to a String. Does anyone have any idea how i could go about this? So far I've been using while loops eg.
         result = select.executeQuery("select * from score where stu_score = 10 and level_id = 1");
              while(result.next())
    String s = result.getString("stu_id");
    System.out.println(s);
    result = select.executeQuery("Select stu_name from Student where stu_id = '"+s+"'");
    while(result.next())
         String r = result.getString("stu_name");
         System.out.println(r);
    This will return one stu_id and one stu_name. Any ideas?

    Hi,
    You are getting results from the database and storing them in result. Inside your outermost while loop you are overwriting the same object i.e. result, by saying
    result = select.executeQuery("Select stu_name from Student where stu_id = '"+s+"'");
    That is why you only get one stu_id and one stu_name. Outside the first while loop, declare another ResultSet object, call it result2, and use that one inside.
    However, I strongly recommend not to run such code in a jsp. Do this in a servlet, and set your results that you get through the resultsets in a data transfer object, store it in the request or session, and then get it in the jsp. Also, remeber to close your resultset, statment, and connection objects, otherwise you will suffer from the open cursors problem - eventually! And above all, that is the right way of doing stuff.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to get the query values from the url in a servlet and pass them to jsp

    ok..this is the situation...
    all applications are routed through a login page...
    so if we have a url like www.abc.com/appA/login?param1=A&param2=B , the query string must be passed onto a servlet(which is invoked before the login page is displayed)..the servlet must process the query string and then should pass all those values(as hidden values) to the login jsp..then user enters username and pswd, then there should be another servlet which takes all the hidden values of jsp and also username and pswd, authenticates the user and sends the control back to that particular application along with the hidden values...
    so i need help on how to parse the query string from the original url in the servlet, pass it out to jsp, and then pass it back to the servlet and back to the original application...damnn...any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

    ok..this is the situation...Sounds like you have a bad design on your hands.
    You're going to send passwords in a GET request as clear text? Nice security there.
    Why not start with basic security and work your way up?
