PBG4 virus or mini-stroke?

Last night my 4-year old PB crashed for the first time. When I restarted it, the date had moved back to 1969, and it no longer recognized the certificates of the Apple support or mail webservers. Otherwise, there were no problems. I reset the time and date and restarted it again and it now seems okay (and it recognizes the Apple certificates).
What could have caused this? Should I take it in for some diagnostics? Or is this just a sign of old age?

To find min stroke weight and font size

For printing purpose, we need to tell the min stroke weight and min font size (outlined fonts) to the printer in order to make sure that the artwork is fulfilled the printing requirement. Is it any Ai scripting that can help us to find them in the artwork?

Do not know about VB Script or Apple Script. But, in JavaScript, we have methods to know the stroke weight of some objects. The problem, at true, is: there are contents (like Envelopes, Blends, Symbols) we are not able to acess the internal objects, so we could not evaluate the stroke weight of these.
So, a JavaScript that that reads stroke widths would limit to single groups, isolated paths, compound paths and so on. So, in various artworks (depending on what artist used to create the artwork), it would fall to completelly analyze the objects.
The same for mininum font size. If the text is isolated or inside single groups, then perfect. But if it´s inside symbols, for example, you would not reach via script.

Does my MBP need an anti virus?

My last computer was a PC and it had so many viruses (and other lovely things) it would take half an hour to open up firefox! Everyone i speek to says a Mac doesn't need an anti virus, but mine might need an exception. Needless to say i'm not the most cautious downloader, is their anything i can do so that history doesn't repeat itself?

As xdunlapx suggested, you might want to use either (or both) Sophos and/or ClamXav. Do not download the version of ClamXav that comes from the App Store as it does not include the 'real time' ClamXav Sentry. Sentry is a part of ClamXav that will scan particular folders that you select - I have it 'gaurding' my Downloads folder and the folder where my emails are stored. It does a very good job and is not intrusive.
While there are no known viruses for the Mac, there is malware out there - I would suggest reading Thomas Reed's excellent Mac Malware Guide. Thomas recommends both Sophos and ClamXav and, for me, he's the resident expert on Mac malware.

File transfer: AFP vs FTP

Setup:
Cable modem to Linksys WRT54g broadcasting only in G only mode for PBG4.
AEBSn#1 in bridge mode via Ethernet from Linksys, N only mode, broadcasting wirelessly.
AEBSn#2 is wirelessly extending N-only from AEBSn#1, and is connected to a mini with external hard drive.
Using PBG4, if I mount a volume from the mini and transfer a file, transfer time is very slow: approx. 20 minutes for a 200MB file. If I FTP from PBG4 into the mini, transfer time is 2 minutes.
(I think the same happens if I use a Macbook Pro connected to the N-only network, but it's in for repairs right now, so I can't be sure.)
Any idea why the transfer times are so different b/w AFP and FTP and, more importantly, what I can do to remedy this? Thanks.

Same problem here. I have two AEBS Gigabit in bridge mode. Transfering a file via FTP or with Apple Remote Access (ARD) brings up to 3 MB/sec. Same file and same configuration connected via AFP only brings 60 kB/sec.
I hope somebody has an idea how to fix this.

Macbook (2.1Ghz white 2008 model) display won't turn on during start-up

my problem is pretty simple.
Sometimes, after having used an external display with my Macbook (using the Apple Mini DVI > DVI adaptor: http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY ) the Macbook's own display won't power on during the next boot-up. I can hear the hard-disk start up, and the system boot, and I'm even able to navigate my way into the user login and shut the computer down (all via the keyboard). So the computer is definitely powering up (and in a seemingly normal way), but the display isn't.
For example, last night I was using an external display with my Macbook. This morning I plug the display back into my Mac Pro, then power-up my Macbook. But the Macbook's display won't turn on. It's as though it thinks the external display is still plugged-in. I know, that if I re-connect the external display, the Macbook's login page is displayed, but only on the external screen.
The problem only arose after I started using this particular external display (a cheap 22" BenQ, model G2222HDL 'senseye 3'). I wouldn't normally use the display with my Macbook, but my Mac Pro has a **really** noisy optical drive (CD/DVD), which makes watching films pretty unbearable (if you're into sound anyway, which I am).... so until I get my Mac Pro's drive sorted (when I have a few spare days when I won't be needing it), I'll have to continue using my external display with my Macbook to watch films.
My Macbook's specs are as follows:
2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook (2008 model - I think, maybe 2009?)
4Gb RAM
Running OS X 10.5.8
Are there any known display issues with these models of Macbook? Or are there any software/firmware updates that address any display issues?
In general, I don't update the software/firmware unless I need to, or unless something doesn't seem to be working properly.
However, I've just checked Software Update, and noticed there is an SMC firmware update (1.4). So I might give that a go and see if the problem persists.
However, the problem is intermittant, and kind of unpredicatable, so I might not know for a while if it solves the problem or not.
Has anyone else had a similar problems?
Alternatively, is there a possibility there is some kind of virus or file-corruption causing this problem?
My girlfriend has a similar model of Macbook (which she's never had any problems with). Recently I moved a whole bunch of files from my Macbook to hers, and she noticed that hers had a similar issue starting up, where the display failed to turn on.... so it seems like
a) it might be a common-ish problem in this model of Macbook
or
b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?
I've been using Macs for about 15 years (yet, I don't consider myself a computer expert, when it comes to the technical details). In those 15 years, viruses have never really been a concern to me, as I've never really thought they were much threat to Macs. However, I guess, as Macs get increasingly more popular, there's a possibility people will write more Mac-specific viruses...?
Anyway, I'm open to suggestions : )

PS I've tried:
-re-starting the computer multiple times (which sometimes works, but usually doesn't).
-re-setting the SMC (which usually works, but not always)
-plugging/un-plugging the external display to try and jog the computer into noticing it isn't connected (which doesn't work)

How do I delete iTunes music off my iPad 2?

I have an iPad 2 running 7.0.3. I need to delete all my songs off my iPad 2 because I recently had a mini stroke and am finding mt iPad 2 more of a necessity every day requiring me to down load more and more apps. I would like to keep my radio stations and one music video movie but the songs must go. In a perfect world, I would have a 64 gig or better iPad to hold my large music library, but, that's not possible at this time. So for now, I will plug my iPod into my surround system and be very grateful for that! My MacBook runs 10.5.8 with iTunes 10.6.?, I cannot read the last digit because it's a scrolling message and even with my new glasses, I can't tell what it is. But my MacBook will not let me see my iPad upon connection anymore. I used to do all the loading manually so I knew I would make sure I would love what I had on my limited space on the iPad. But I cannot do that now without an upgrade of iTunes on the MacBook but it's maxed out on upgrades. It's pretty old...about 7 years old I guess. But other than this glitch, the MacBook works perfectly fine!! Can anybody help me with this issue??

Is there a way to blow up screens no matter what app I'm in so I can see

I recently suffered a mini stroke and it effected my eye sight so now I cannot read small print even with my reading glasses. On the iPad, I can blow up the screen in most cases but some apps like Facebook I cannot allow you to blow up the screen. Is there any way to blow up the screen no matter what app I'm in??
Also, kind of related to not being able to see...I recently discovered iTunes Radio. I was going thru and adding playlists to my stuff. Seemed easy enough. Until I reopened it today and I see "purchased" next to the only one listed playlist there. Now, I picked about 5 or 6 from their list of recommended list and did not once see anywhere where I was going to be charged. Now mind you my eye sight is messed up but what happened to the little box that would pop up and ask you if you were sure you wanted to make this purchase?? How can I get that back?
And, finally, since I've made this purchase unknowingly, to an account that has no money in it, how do I change my billing info with Apple?

White Lines on Live Traced Artwork in PDF from Illustrator CS3

Hi, I've recently been using the Live Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 on my artwork so that my artwork becomes a vector image instead of a raster (I'm told it's better for Web because it works better with varying resolutions - doesn't become pixelated). For my live trace, I use a custom preset: ADJUSTMENTS- Mode: Color Threshold: 128 (grayed out) Palette: Automatic Max Colors: 256 Output to Swatches: OFF Blur: 0 px Resample: 600 px Fills: ON <grayed out> Strokes: OFF (grayed out) TRACE SETTINGS- Max Stroke Weight: 10 px (grayed out) Min Stroke Length: 20 px (grayed out) Path Fitting: 1 px Minimum Area: 1 px Corner Angle: 1 Ignore White: OFF VIEW- Raster: No Image Vector Tracing Result The preview info, located under the dialogue bubble with the i states: Paths: 4894 Anchors: (no number) Colors: 148 Areas: 4822 Image PPI: 200 I don't know if that helps anyone, but that's just the preset I've used to get a sharper, almost fully preserved vector version of my raster image. When I want to convert it to a PDF file using the File > Save As... > Save as type: PDF with the following preset: Adobe PDF Preset: Illustrator Default Standard: None Compatibility: Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7) Then, my image as viewed in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional has several white lines, outlining areas of color. The issue is perfectly preserved, as you can see the white lines outlining areas of color. This problem is persistent despite the zoom level in Acrobat 8. Just another little bit of information, the problem is most noticeable in the red area and not the cream/white and yellow areas. When I was working on the original raster image in Photoshop CS3, the cream/white area was done with the Ellipse Tool, using Bevel and Emboss in the Blending Options. The same goes for the yellow area, which was done with the Line Tool. The red area was done manually, with the Brush Tool, Smudge, Blur, Burn, etc. I'm telling you guys just about everything I've done leading up to this issue. But, if there's something you need to know more, I'll try to figure out what I could've possibly done wrong to get this result.

I too get this result when using LiveTrace. My simple solution to this problem was to just place a solid color shape behind that section of the trace where it occurs that is the same color as the trace. Simple...but it worked.

Display keeps changing on it's own

For a couple of weeks now my Mac Mini keeps changing the display at random. I have changed the settings on the monitor itself and thru system pref. Nothing fixes it permanently. It looks as though it's going into some sort of zoom effect and the fonts look weird (almost like what windows looks like if you start in "safe mode"). I can do absolutely nothing, just walk away from the computer, and a few hours later go back and it will have fixed itself. Or vice versa. For example, this morning I'm on the computer, everything is fine. I walked away, it went into sleep, I come back hit the space bar on the keyboard to wake it up and I'm in zoom. ????? what is going on? Do I have some sort of virus?

Mine appears to be doing the same thing. I use reset to bring it back to normal. It does not matter if all programs are closed or not. It still does it. When I say reset I mean clicking on the Apple icon and going to reset not the command option r, p. Of course they may be the same thing for all I know as I do not know the short cuts very well.
I also have a RAM problem - the amount of RAM available keeps disappearing. I do not know if this is related or not - but plan to post this question in another community. I only mention it in case it might be relevant.

Running slow, running slow

I thought that MAC's aren't supposed to get viruses. Mine sure is acting like it has one. It's running extremely slow. What can I do to correct this?

Which Mac, which version of OS X, how much RAM? You need to provide some basic clues. However my guess is your system is starved for RAM. Please read and use Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used and then post back with some information about your system. BTW Macs don't get viruses!

"Printer Setup Utility" is missing...can I download it somewhere?

I recently "uninstalled" my HP printer's software. (Photosmart C4180) I've been having trouble printing, and have had to reinstall the software twice in the past several months to get it working again. However, now I can't get it to work at all. I've searched my entire hard drive, and there is no "Printer Setup Utility" to be found. I DO recall accessing it earlier, when checking out my Utilities folder. Somehow it has now disappeared. I can't seem to find a site where I can simply re-download another Printer Setup Utility. Anyone have suggestions? I recently had a "mini-stroke," and it's pretty hard for me to focus on an annoying problem like this for very long. Eventually, I may be able to upgrade to OS 10.5- Leopard, but can't afford it now. So meanwhile- I'm stuck with what I have. Thanks! Dan

I don't recall for sure - you may be able to get Printer Setup utility by downloading the 10.4.11 Combo Updater from Apple and re-Updating with that. If not, there is a utility called Pacifist that allows you to reinstall individual files from your Install DVD - get it here:

PS- I love Apple (worked for them a couple of years) - but Leopard (10.5) is beta software. There are more printing problems than with any release since 10.1. Don't go there until they have fixed the problems.

MacBook shuts down randomly

MacBook shuts down randomly while using or while sitting idle. It then needs a min before the power button seems to function. The charger will not start charging right away after the computer comes back on. I also notice the date and time goes back to 7:00am Jan 1st 2008. There is a dialog box that says it has been reset, but no reason why. I then have to re-enter all my password info. In most cases the time does return by it's self to the correct time and date after I go to change the time and date, but only when i go to change it, before doing that it stays the same. I did have one time where I was unable to change the time, it would not allow me. I had to restart the computer again to change the time and date. I have not seen anything on the forum that explain this issue. I am not sure if it is a virus either.

Mine has been doing this aswell. It started a few months ago with not waking up from Sleep mode after I closed the lid. It has gotten progressively worse- where it won't turn on for sometimes days on end. Holding the power button down to shut it off completely or to restart doesn't work. This happens when pugged in and not.
Most recently though, when I am able to get it to turn on, it will randomly shut down, or go to sleep and I can't get it to come out of it.
I bought this brand new just over a year ago. I shouldn't be having these problems!

Mail Services keeps shutting down

I have been plaque with this problem for about two months. I have 5 static ips and I use one of the ips to host a webserver and very small mail server. I am on DSL. My problem is my mail server always shuts down after a couple hours. The error is
127.0.0.1 port 25 is already in use.
I usually restart the server and everything is fine for a few hours and the mail is shut down.
I am using 10.4.5 OS X Server G4 1.4 GHZ Sawtooth.

This what I get when the mail server shuts down. The previous post suggestion didn't work. Shuts down the mail server even quicker....seems like every 10 minutes the mail server shuts down.

PowerBook 17" G4 Lid not closing properly

Hello,
my PowerBook G4 17" lid doesn't properly close any more. The two little hooks are ok and they get pulled down by the magnet as always but it seems like that the lid with the display is too strongly pulling upwards so that the hooks snap back out.
Can anybody help me if I can fix this myself? Any trick?

On my PowerBook 17" (1Ghz) I can see the latch mechanism from the battery bay if I take out the battery. Looks like this would let you inspect for any dust or debris that can restrict the full range of motion the locking block needs. The typical cause of locking problems is that something gets between the front of the locking block and the inner surface of the case that acts as a forward stop.
In my MacBook Pro, this access is blocked. I don't know if the blocking panel is fitted to PBG4s newer than mine, but it's worth a try.
