Pdf link in Safari
Good morning,
I have problems with pdf link in Safari. Tapping on them they don't work.
Thanks for the support.
Danilo
You may like to experiment with this manually first, if it works then finalize it in a script:
1) manually login to you secure site.
2) copy the URL address
3) launch Terminal and type in:
'/System/Library/Automator/Get Link URLs from Webpages.action/Contents/Resources/links' 'http://the.copied.URL'
replace http://the.copied.URL with real URL, it should return a list of links in the URL.
4) If the PDF links is in it, then you'll try to download it using curl command, still in Terminal; type in:
/usr/bin/curl 'http://path.to.PDF.URL' -o ~/foo.pdf
replace http://path.to.PDF.URL with the pdf link, and with any luck you download you PDF to your home folder.

Can't open PDF links in Safari
Hi, only since a couple of days ago, I couldn't open PDF links in Safari. The page loads but nothing appears in the new window or tab.
Thanks,
AaronWelcome to Apple Discussions
Did you recently install Adobe Reader or is it installed in your system? If not, Safari's preference folder may be corrupt. To create a new preference file go to the Finder, drag to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist folder found in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder.
Restart Safari and try a PDF. It ought to open within the browser. Also, you'll need to reset your custom preferences, plus any custom settings in the Edit (spelling) or View (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons etc.) menus.
If Adobe Reader is installed, and you want the PDF to open in the Safari Browser, go to your Internet Plug-ins Folder (Main or User Library in your Finder) and remove the Adobe plug-in. -
Can't view PDF links with Safari
When I'm online with Safari, and click on a PDF link, Safari tries to view it using QuickTime, and all I get is the first page. (I have the latest version of Adobe Reader.) If I use Safari to view a PDF file that is already on my hard drive, once again QuickTime is used, but this time it plays as a movie and flips through all the pages when I hit PLAY. Somebody help.
Hi,
Try changing your QuickTime preferences:
System Preferences -> QuickTime -> Advanced -> (MIME Settings...) -> Images - Still image files -> PDF Image -> Uncheck this option
That's the path for 10.4.x and it's been a while since I used Panther, but hopefully the route is still roughly the same.
Hope that helps. -
Open a PDF link in safari or adobe.
I am on a website that pulls up a single page PDF. On my laptop I can click on the bookmarks chain to the left to open another PDF book. In safari on my ipad 2 I cannot find a bookmarks tab. If I open the web page in adobe I can click on the bookmarks but the link does nothing. Is there a browser or PDF viewer that can open this link. Here is the link: http://manuals.gogenielift.com/Parts%20And%20Service%20Manuals/START%20HERE.pdf. Thanks.

PDF Links Won't Open in Safari 3.1.2
Whenever I click on a PDF link in Safari, I just get a blank gray page with a spinner. PDFs use to open with no problem. I did update to Adobe CS3 last week - don't know if that's part of the problem. I have plenty of memory and disk space. Any ideas?
Do you have Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Pro installed? If so, that is the problem.
You need to quit Safari, start the applicable program(s) you have, go to Preferences > Internet and uncheck the box where it says "Display PDF in browser using:". Then go to Users/username/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and remove the Adobe PDF plugin. Restart Safari and try view a PDF in the browser.

Hi All:
I know this has been asked and answered so many time that I am sorry to post again. However, I have read many of the prior posts, tired the fixes, and still the problem persists. All of a sudden, without any erxplanation I know of, PDF links do not open within Safari, as in the past, but instead revert to the Downloads and open in Preview.
MacBook Pro OS: 10.6.8
Safari: 5.1.7
I have two other accounts set up and they both open PDF links within Safari.
I have downloaded Adobe Reader again, checked my plugins. I can’t locate any Adobe plugins on either my home account or hard drive, restarted, etc.
If possible, can someone try and offer assistance. It's one of those things which is bugging me and have been struggling with for the past three hours.
thank you.Hi Linc:
You and Carolyn seem to tbe the go to people for this issue.
When I pull up the plug0ins from the Help Menu, I get an entire page. I've tried copying it below.
What really confuses me is that it works fine in my other accounts and I can't determine what is different in this account.
thanks,
val

Using my iMac, when I go to a pdf link through Safari 3.1, I get directed to a window to choose what program i want to open it with, and each time I have to navigate to Adobe reader 8 folder then to Adobe Reader.app. I have to do this everytime I quit safari, it will remember if i keep safari open and get a new pdf file.
My other computer, same OS etc, same Adobe reader app, never asks me to choose an application to open it up. Why cannot my safari on my iMac remember this?

Hi,
I prefer to view pdf pop up links in Acrobat Reader. There seem to be more steps to save a pdf opened in Preview than the one step to save a pdf opened in Reader. I used "more info" in Finder to change the preference for all pdf files to open in Acrobat. This works great except in Safari. Preview still opens the pdf links in Safari. Is there some way to stop Preview and use Acrobat for viewing pdf's in Safari? Acrobat is opening pdfs everywhere but in Safari. This may be way out in left field because I couldn't really follow what all the entries were saying.
However, after my operating system was upgraded to OS X 4.8, I was unable to download PDFs. Safari always appended ".download" to the PDFs I was viewing. When I tried to save the document I was forced to use the .download extension.
Then when I tried to view the saved file, I was told that it was not valid download file.
To make a long story short, I quickly read through all the entries - I wasn't going to start deleting things as some of the entries suggested - but I did follow one suggestion, and that was to re-install Adobe Reader.
That fixed it. It all works quite differently than it did before my operating system was upgraded - but at least I can now SAVE and THEN READ a PDF now.
So, indirectly, thanks everyone for your help.

Upgrade to OS 7, can't open pdf files in safari.
Since updating ipad to OS 7 I can't open any pdf links in safari, just get a blank page. It's working fine on my iphone which also has OS 7. Have tried everything but now totally perplexed, anyone got an answer?
Hello ccrjon,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with PDFs in Safari after upgrading to iOS 7.
The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPad:
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Force an app to close
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching Safari, I recommend restarting your iPad and then resetting if it's still not working:
Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPad:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
iTunes: Restoring iOS software
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

PDF links do not open properly
I run safari 1.3.2 on OS 10.3.9. Initially a pdf link in safari would open properly by using the adobe plugin or whatever. Now a pdf link opens up using the Quicktime plugin. How can I manage plugins and get pdfs to open properly in safari?

ALL PDF files crash Safari!
I can open PDFs sent thru email, and I can sync PDFs to the phone from iTunes and open them in iBooks... but, regardless of size or content, I cannot open a PDF in Safari.
When I click on a PDF link in Safari, the browser display refreshes and, for a split second, I see the PDF's first page displayed... and then immediately Safari crashes.
I've been seeing this around the internet, too, and I'm wondering when Apple will recognize this as a bug and issue a patch... anyone? And we haven't even mentioned the worst part of this. It crashes the browser and then every attempt to reopen the browser results in that same PDF trying to load and immediately crashing the browser. There are only two options that I have found to get around this ridiculous problem:
1) Immediately after launching Safari I touch the page count and attempt to close the loading page. This does not always work.
2) Go into the Safari settings (very glad these are outside of the app) and Clear Cache. This immediately solves the problem because it clears all open pages in Safari. The problem is that it clears ALL OPEN PAGES in Safari which means that the pages you weren't having a problem with close as well. -
Occasionally (but increasingly frequently) I attempt to open pdf links in safari, only to get a totally black page. Sometimes the pdf can be accessed by saving linked file to download, but not always. This didn't use to happen - is there a solution.
Well, for a long time I've been Firefox user, but I decided to give Safari a spin. (Before anyone asks, yeah, I've got the current versions of Acrobat Reader and Safari.) So, I port over my Firefox bookmarks and start to "try 'em out" in Safari. Boy, what a surprise! I follow a link to a bookmarked site that I know has pdf files. I click a file, and what do I get? A black screen! I try over websites for pdf files and it's the same thing--no pdf files will open. I launch Firefox just to make sure those pdf files do open. Yep, they open for Firefox.
I reboot Safari--no solution. I reboot the machine--no help. I then start looking for a selection in Safari's preferences where I tell Safari it's okay to open pdf files. As you all know (and I did, too), there is no such a preference.
I spend several minutes checking to see if Safari will play movies, etc. Everything seemed to work. I try pdf files again.
The next pdf file I try and I get an error message saying Safari can't find Acrobat Reader and has me navigate to Reader. Well, it will only allowed me to select Reader 8, not Reader 9, the most current reader version. I select Reader 8, and the pdf file opens.
What a struggle! Maybe I'll just stay with Firefox.

PDF links open numerous pages in safari instead of saving file or opening it in preview
I changed by mistake an application opening PDF links from preview to safari. No it's a catastrophe as when I click on those they open thousands of new windows and everything stops working. I changed default program for PDF files to preview, but it didn't help. Does anybody know where in safari I can change default app ? SOS

Can't open pdf file linked through a ASPX link in Safari
I'm a new Mac user so sorry if this is basic. It appears when I click on a link in Safari that should open a PDF file (link uses a ASP link) I get the download box instead. I can download the file to my desktop and open it with adobe from there. I just downloaded the latest adobe reader. This is a new intel iMac (10.4.8). If I click directly on a link to a PDF file it opens in Safari with no problem. The specific link I'm having trouble with is :
http://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/download.aspx?ft=MzAwMTV8fHwyNC4xOTIuMTM5LjE4NXx8 MS8yLzIwMDcgODo0OTozNyBQTQ%3D%3D
It seems to see the file as having a ".pdf.exe" extension so doesn't open it with adobe but sees it as an application so offers to download or cancel.
Really clicking on any PDF link from this page causes the same problem : http://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/index.asp?folder=15700&name=Physical%20Science
These links act OK using IE. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks...JimSorry for the insufficient info.
My environment is Windows 7 64bit.
The PDF was converted from Word file and for example the link which should open a local file was working on version 10.1.1.33 (like first picture below) but not anymore after updating to 10.1.4(second one).
Can you help me with this?
