PE8 and PE7 plugins

I have a plugin called Mercalli I use with PE7, it's a video stabilizer plugin.  Does anyone know if PE7 plugins are compatible with PE8?  Will PE8 just automatically see the Mercalli Plugin, or do I have to do something to get PE8 to see PE7 plugins?  Looking at my plugin loading log I see the following lines indicating PE7 is loading this plugin from the registry, would PE8 pick up the same registry information and load a PE7 third party plugin?

Roger,
I do not have an answer from the Mercalli company, but I do have these suggestions for you to think about.
These Premiere Elements are standalone programs. I have never found that installing a plugin in one version enabled the plugin in another version. I had to install the plugin in the correct folder in the specific version. One example is the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin. That needs to be installed in every version that you want to use it in.
Premiere Elements 7 as well as 8 has a Video Stabilizer from New Blue. This plugin can be found in Program Files\Adobe\Premiere Elements\8.0\Plug-ins\en_US\New Blue. The New Blue Stabilizer has a file extension of .aex, not .prm. But in that New Blue folder also are New Blue plug-ins with the file extension of .prm.
I would imagine that your Mercalli .prm file is installed in a folder found via the Program Files\Adobe\Premiere Elements\7.0\Plug-ins\en_US\. Have you found it there? If so, why not make a copy and put it in the corresponding place (the en_US folder) in Premiere Elements 8 and see if the Mercalli plug-in is recognized. From what you have written,  look for a Mercalli folder with a file with a file extension of .prm, not .dll, maybe .aex if no .prm.
The first step would be to get the plug-in file installed in the approxpriate folder and then see if it will work in the version of choice. I do not think it realistic to believe that installing Mercalli in one version enables it to function beyond the program in which it is installed.
If you give it a try, please let me know the outcome.

  • Installing PE8 and uninstalling PE7

    I have a PC running Vista-64 bit and PE7.  Everything works fine, and I'm planning on installing PE8 as soon as I get it.  I want to install PE8, then use it a while, then if I am comfortable with it, un-install PE7.
    My question is, will installing 8, waiting a while, then UNINSTALLING 7 cause me problems?  Will un-installing PE7 after PE8 is already installed potentially cause me to lose some files PE8 needs?
    I see an entry in my uninstall folder for Photoshop elements 7.0, Premiere elements 7.0 and Premiere elements templates 7.0.  If I install PE8 then un-install all the pe7 stuff at a later date, will it somehow remove some files PE8 might need, like templates or anything?

    Sebastian,
    I am also just a user of Adobe products, with no inside info. All of observations are purely anecdotal, but they come from decades of using Adobe programs, some from before they were actually Adobe products.
    Over this time, with many versions of the major Adobe stable, I have only encountered one install/uninstall problem, and have only read on one other.
    The first, the personal one, was the installation of PrE 4, after I had the full CS2 Production Studio suite installed on the same machine. In that case, the installation of PrE 4 killed all programs in the Production Studio, PS, AI, Acrobat Pro, AE, Bridge and Encore. This was a known issue to Adobe. When I became aware of the issue, a search turned up the appropriate Adobe KB Article. It instructed the user to just do a Repair Install of the programs in the Production Studio suite. Obviously, Adobe had not anticipated that one might have the Production Studio (probably the same for stand-alone versions in that suite, but I cannot verify that), and then subsequently install the lower-level program, PrE 4. Enough had encountered this situation, as Adobe had that KB Article, so twenty minutes of Repair Install, and all was working again. Quick and smooth, but would have scared me, had I not had that KB Article.
    The next was with PrPro CS3 and CS4. In that case, if a user had CS3, and subsequently installed CS4, only to later remove CS3, files necessary for CS4 would be uninstalled too. Again, Adobe became aware of this behavior and issued a KB Article on this issue. Again, a Repair Install of CS4 took care of the missing files. I did not encounter this problem personally, so can only add it from Adobe’s instructions in that KB Article, and from second-hand reports of others.
    Over the decades, I have had up to four versions of PS on one machine. One version was to do one particular job for one particular client. With PS 5 Adobe changed some things with Spot Color, and how it was handled. This client had a client and a printer, that needed things done in the way that PS 4 did Spot Color. There is still probably an article on the Internet on how I handled this issue. I had PS 5, because I had not gotten around to removing it. I had PS 6 installed, as that was then the version that I was most familiar with, and PS 7, as it was the newest version, and I was still learning its interface changes. I always kept the previous version of PS on my machines, for those times that a client would need something immediately. Though I’d be learning the newer version and becoming familiar with its changes, if I was under the pressure of a looming deadline, I wanted my "old friend," that I knew intimately and could use quickly without even thinking.
    In short time, I had removed PS 5 and PS 6, and only had PS 4 and PS 7 functioning. No issues. However, I would be remiss if I did not point out that these were all older Adobe programs, and were before things like Activation. Programs were far more simple in those days.
    Similar happened with PageMaker 4.5 and PM 6. I kept the older version, as I had many Projects in it, and knew it. I had the newer version to learn, and explore the added power. Same for Illustrator. Once I had 3 versions of AI installed, until I became comfortable enough with the newer, to uninstall the older ones. Same for all of the Macromedia (now Adobe) programs. Though outside the Adobe camp, it was the same for what is now Corel Painter. I had 3 versions installed, as I needed the way that version 3 did things, appreciated things in version 4 and knew it, and was learning version 5, but was not yet comfortable enough with it to rely on it for rush jobs. Finally, version 4 came off of the machine, and I replaced version 5 with 6, but still kept the older version 3, because of the way it handled certain things, and as there was a change in the way that Brushes were handled, I needed some of my Brushes that would only work in the now much older version 3. No issues with having multiple versions, and then uninstalling those, when the time came.
    Now, looking at Adobe’s NLE programs, there is another compelling reason to retain an older version. Let’s take PrPro 2.0 as an example. The .PRPROJ files from version 2 will Open in PrPro CS3, but with a conversion. PrPro CS3 Project files will NOT Open in PrPro 2. Same for PrPro CS4. Adobe is good at offering forward compatibility, though it is not perfect. There is almost never ANY backward compatibility. If one has Projects in an earlier version, they MIGHT Open in the later version, but prevailing wisdom is to finish all Projects in the version, in which they were started. That is foolproof, where forward compatibility with Projects can work, and should work, there are never any guarantees.
    With regards to this forward compatibility, I have Opened Projects done in Pr 6.5 (Mac) in CS2 (PC), with no issues. I have Opened Pr 6.5 (PC) in CS3 (PC) to allow Mac users to Open these on their Mac’s. Since CS2 was a PC-only version, Mac users were hosed, with earlier PC version Projects. They HAD to be Opened in CS3 (PC), and Saved from CS3, to allow a Mac to Open these. Kind of an odd workflow, but necessary when a Mac user encountered these older PC Projects, and I was able to help many get these onto their Mac’s.
    PrE is very similar to PrPro, and I still recommend that one finish a Project started in an older version, and not try to utilize the forward compatibility, though it usually works fine. Keeping those Projects in their native version is failsafe - they always work. Often, this does require having multiple versions of PrE installed.
    Since we are talking of PrE 8 and PrE 7, I will freely admit that I have no direct experience with either, so I do not know how well PrE 8 handles PrE 7 Projects. Based on general experiences, they should Open fine, and I’d guess that one could NOT go backward from that point on.
    I also have no experience with uninstalling an older version of PrE, after a newer one has been installed. Still, with my experience with Adobe products, it would seem very likely that one would have no issues. If they did, the Repair Install of the remaining newer version should do fine.
    Anecdotal yes, but based on decades of working with Adobe products.
    Regardless, we greatly appreciate your observations, and welcome you to this forum. We are not accustomed to having Adobe Employees here, and feel very fortunate that you took your time to enter into this conversation, regardless of from which department you come. Thank you for your comments.
    Welcome and thank you,

  • When I click Tools and then plugins and check whether my plugins are up to date or not, Firefox gives me a notice saying my Flash Player is an outdated version and must be replaced.

    I am trying to do something that requires Flash Player, but even though it shows in my control panel, and it is the latest version, I keep seeing a notice that it is disabled, and it does not appear in the list of plugins, so I don't know how to enable it.
    I have been installing the same version over and over again since yesterday, but when I go to check the plugin, a box appears saying it is disabled. When I go in Tools to the list oif plugins, it is not there! Very frustrating. edit

    In Add-ons > Plugins, you must enable "Shockwave Flash (version)"; that is Adobe Flash. Click the "Enable" button next to it. The most current version is 10.3.183.10, which was released just a few days ago.
    '''''"Installed Plug-ins''''' <br />

    Did you disable all of your plugins? Why?
    You need to re-enable your plug-ins in Add-ons > Plugins, then check them to see if they are current and update as necessary.

    There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash; an '''ActiveX version''' for IE only and a '''Plugin version''' for most other browsers including Firefox. On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.
    #'''Using Firefox''', go to the following direct download link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
    #When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
    #Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
    #*In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
    #*The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    #*The installation is quick.

  • After update Gedit and Epiphany plugins not working anymore

    Gedit and Epiphany plugins stopped working after recent update. They are listed in plugin dialog, but can't be enabled. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

    I was able to successfully enable the plugins by re-compiling gedit using the ABS system.
    However, I do think this is a bug, and that we should report it.  I'm unfamiliar with that
    process as well.  If anyone can post a quick suggestion as to the best place to file a bug report,
    I would appreciate it :-)
    In the meantime, here's what I did.  This was my first time using the ABS system, so
    I went to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ABS All the below instructions are on the wiki,
    these instructions are specific to gedit:
    I installed abs using pacman.
    # pacman -Sy abs
    I edited /etc/abs.conf, and put a ! in front of the testing REPOS:
    REPOS=(core extra community !testing)
    As root, I ran
    # abs
    A bunch of stuff was downloaded to my /var/abs folder.
    I make a directory in my home folder for gedit's stuff:
    $ mkdir -p /home/yourusername/abs
    I copied gedit's stuff from /var/abs to my abs folder:
    $ cp -r /var/abs/extra/gedit/ ~/abs
      $ cd ~/abs/gedit
    I ran makepkg -s
    $ makepkg -s
    A bunch of stuff downloaded and compiled.  When it was done, there was a new gedit-2.24.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz file in the same directory.
    I told pacman to install the tar.gz file.  Note that I did not have to uninstall gedit.
    As root:
    # pacman -U gedit-2.24.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
    And that was it!  I could then go into gedit and enable/disable whatever plugins I wanted.
    Hope this helps,

    I wanted to check out the Hangouts feature at Google+, but I need the Google Voice and Video plugin for that. Without knowing exactly what the bug is in the Akvis code, I don't know.
    But some third party plugins always need an update when new versions of Photoshop are released (especially those that try to modify Photoshop's UI).
    We work hard to maintain plugin API compatibility, and most plugins work just fine in new versions, but there are always some problems to work out in third party plugin code.
    (Macintosh plugins are going through a lot of problems in CS5 because we had to change the UI toolkit used, and many assumptions made by plugin UI code no longer hold)

  • Control Surfaces and Native Plugins

    I have a Novation RemoteZero SL and, though I can access basic volume and pan, and I can control plugins from other companies where Novation has set up "AutoMap", I can't control Logic's own plugins! It won't learn them or control them in any way. This is a known issue for Novation, but what of other controllers?
    Are there any controllers that easily control Logic's effects like the eq banks, compressors, etc? This seems bonehead basic, but I can't find any info on this topic here or in other discussions.
    Thanks.

    The Mackie Control support lets you edit all parameters of instuments and effects plugins. If you don't have a Mackie Control, you can also use John Pitcairn's LCXmu, which acts as a virtual Logic Control translator between your controller and Logic.
    I have a Korg microKontrol running with LCXmu, and it's excellent, way better than Logic'a native mK support, and you can access all instrument & plugin parameters, with the names coming up on the mK screens etc.
    Have a look at LCXmu at OpusLocus and see whether your hardware is a directly supported device. Even if it isn't, you can still use it, you just have to set up some manual mapping stuff, depending on what buttons etc you have on your controller.
    Otherwise, you are back to manually assigning parameters using Logic's controller assignments - but they are buggy.
    I have to say that LCXmu has completely solved all controller issues I had using the micoKontrol as a little portable controller. It's ace.

    I am running Firefox 18.0.1 and the plugin-container is using all my ram, have tried altering dom.ipc.plugins to false but makes no difference. Any advice please

    plugin-container.exe is used to run Flash and other plugins so if they crash they do not take down your main Firefox session. But... I don't think memory usage would be that different if you tricked Firefox into running Flash inside firefox.exe. (There was a thread with the trick, but I can't recall the details. It was not a regular Firefox setting.)

    Re: Plugins for iMovie 11
    Someone just asked this question yesterday. So I am cutting and pasting the answer From Bengt Warleby
    Hi
    You can not.
    Nor to iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - They do not accept any Plug-ins.
    How about FinalCut Pro X - I don't know but i regard to Apple way of progress - I doubt
    For iMovie up to HD6 and FinalCut Express and FinalCut Pro up to 7.0 - there are plenty.
