Performance - starting to suspect underlying SAN

Oracle 11.2.0.1 Standard Edition One on Oracle Linux 5.6 - 64bit
non-RAC with ASM
Disclaimer - before taking this job about a month ago, I'd never had my hands on an ASM system. I'm also hobbled by the fact that we are not licensed for any peformance packs or grid control.
Starting two weeks ago we saw a dramatic increase in run times on several batch jobs. Jobs that normally took a minute started taking an hour, jobs that normally took an hour took all night. Nothing has changed in either the db config or the sql being executed. We have no base-line statistics from prior to the problem. I am beginning to wonder if there might be something going on with the underlying storage system - maybe something like a bad controller causing a lot of retries on I/O operations. Am wondering if there is any way for me to measure disk i/o peformance from ASM's point of view .. or even at the OS level. I've poked around a bit with iostat, but that's really ouside of my lane, and I'm not sure how ASM figures in.
From the DB side, we know we have some not-so-optimal SQL, but it was just as not-so-optimal before two weeks ago and still performing at an acceptable level. Yesterday we saw an update whose plan was driven by a FTS of an 8k row table take about an hour. Same process on a test server (where the db had just been replicated from production a couple of days earlier) took less than two minutes.
From where we (dba team) sit, the only thing that has changed was that a few days prior to the problem the SA un-mounted some disks that were NOT being used by the database. Part of that process requried a reboot of the server - presumably to rescan the available devices for mounting.

(regarding the direct path) direct path reads and writes would show up in the statspack, as for example http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/statspack-distractions/ (which also is an example of how sometimes a top fiver is not on a critical path). Edit: Also see this thread: Re: serial table scan with direct path read compared to db file scattered read
What I'm after is all the configurations of the data path from Oracle to ASM. While ASM is in effect a raw disk, the underlying actual layout can have an effect, as for example the mentioned tiering. There can be so much more not reflected in what Oracle instruments. One thing is mount options - I'm guessing it is possible to dedicate a LUN for a raw device, but between all the Oracle options and bugs and linux options, get something odd happening with mount point aliases. You mentioned the SAN is not stressed - does that mean there is some linux buffer, some controller buffer, some SAN buffer serving requests. Could there be a problem with Oracle lying about how long the I/O waits are? The sreadtime statistics collection bug is probably what was tickling my brain, see http://hoopercharles.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/how-to-collect-statistics/ I can't help but wonder if you are using system statistics for the old hardware on the new, and kind of wonder if whoever came up with this system statistics feedback algorithm even contemplated hardware migration over time. Also an argument to patch up.
Edited by: jgarry on May 16, 2012 8:51 AMJoel,
Thanks for the additional comments. I have several things now I'm going to try and and collecting regular snapshots from statspack so I have a good baseline with which to compare results. I do feel that there is still a sense of "ready, fire, aim" because we've not been able to establish proof of a single cause - just a lot of theories. and for every theory there seems to be a piece of counter evidence.
I'm still working to understand the data path through ASM and the SAN components, but the SA told me yesterday the migration of the data from the EMC to the COMPELLENT happended nearly a year ago, so the idea that the move skewed or invalidated system stats (they've never been gathered, and that's on my to-do list) is ruled out as a proximate cause of recent heartburn.
And getting patched up was supposed to be my number-one priority until all this broke loose. At least my manager is very understanding and no one is asking for my head on a platter. I once worked at a company where if this had happend, I would have already been shown the door.

  • EMac Freezes in Normal Start Up - OK under Safe Boot 10.3.9 or 10.4.11

In helping a charter school get its eMacs back running, one of these eMacs [(ATI Graphics w/32Mb VRAM), 1.25GHz G4, 37GB HD, 1Gb RAM, and whose SN = G8429CDSQJ8] is displaying very unusual symptoms. It simply has to be software or a very weird RAM or VRAM memory issue, but I am mystified as to whose since I found no Firmware Updates at Apple or ATI. Here is the gory story.
I had replaced its battery and added a 1Gb DIMM (About This Mac and System Profiler show this is OK). I repaired the HD from a “Gray Restore DVD that was shipped with these eMacs” (got a “No Repairs Needed” from this) and its Permissions from the DVD set of 10.3.x system SW, and initially did an "archive and restore" installation. This had worked fine for all the other 10 eMacs as had going up to 2 Gb RAM.
On re-start the eMac froze and refused to eject Restore DVD. I hooked up a Firewire Cable to the ailing machine and ejected the Restore DVD after starting the ailing eMac in Target Mode. After this, I started up in Safe Boot and updated the 10.3.x Restored SW to 10.3.9 using Software Update ... things seemed fine. So, I started up in normal mode, opened System Preferences to Accounts to make sure the Student account was under agreed restrictions. As soon as the Authentication panel opened, the eMac froze, needing a Power Button shutdown … it kept doing this, and it behaved itself under Safe Boot after each freeze. I installed YASU (from a CD in Safe Boot and have used for years on my home PMMD, dual 1Ghz G4, 10.4.11), which I understand is simply a group of Unix scripts under a nice GUI and had it do all the system and web browser tasks (i.e. crons, permissions, prebinding, swap filesetc) but saved the logs and their archives.
We were upgrading all the eMacs System SW to Os 10.4.11 (starting from a 10.4.3 "Black X" commercial system disk … so from a Safe Boot, I loaded the 10.4.3 DVD, started up from it, and did an Erase and Install, so all the SW on the drive is Apple’s own. PRAM was reset and amazingly, on this re-start, this eMac froze a few seconds after a App’s window opened. From a new Safe Boot, Software Update took me to 10.4.11 (I refused to allow Safari, iTunes and Quick Time update until it had also updated all the other security and Java (9 Javas of these in numerical order from SUD).
Under Safe Boot, I found I can open as many as 10 Apps or Utilities, flip between the windows … nothing wrong. After some thought, I used Activity Monitor, Disk Utility (to perform “Erase Free Space, 7X” and with Screen Saver’s Flurry at maximum in the Choice window, and this places the processor use at almost 100% (~70-75% user + ~20% system) … but this does not test much of the memory (couldn’t figure out how to do this). I kept things going for over 7 hours while randomly using Safari or Text Edit. But as soon as a Normal Restart is done and a second window opens (even Activity Monitor’s little floater), it freezes again.
The Web is full of symptoms that usually blame memory, but it seems hard to believe that the 1Gb DIMM would “know” when the system is booted Normal vs Safe. So, tonight, I am going to run Rember (v. o.2b) that I dragged off my PMMD … an have used it under 10.4.11 over the years.
BTW, contents of Trash after two (2) hard freezes are always the same system files [annex_aux, annex.db, filetoken.db, fonts.db, and qdfams.db]. The mention of “fonts.db” seems to suggest a font problem, but why … all are fresh 10.4.3 stuff.
It’s my understanding that Safe Boot allows ONLY Apple extensions and Apps to load and this is why it seems to me that the problem must be SW … somehow, somewhere.
Is there a utility that can list third party components? Does this make sense? In looking into the Preferences and Application Support there are Adobe, Macromedia prefs, fonts … which I assume came in w/ Safari since I have not added any 3rd party programs other than YASU, who tells you truthfully where its stuff is loaded
When back at the school, I plan to swap out 1Gb RAM DIMMs and/or replace the old 256Mb DIMM that was original. Also, plan to go back to the Restore Software DVDs (10.3.4 since these have more Apps that are needed): Erase (Zero Out Deleted Files) and Install to rebuild a “virgin” set of 10.3 after restarting. Then Check to see if Safe Boot is stable BEFORE trying to update to 10.4.11 (via 10.4.3 Black X).
However, if this does not make sense, I would be grateful for readers pointing out my errors and/or flawed plans.

Hi Cosmic (and, per my Southern US heritage, hope yawl are doin fine down under),
Firstly, thank you hugely for guiding me through this eMac puzzle. Your insight that under Safe Boot the ATI video extensions are turned off now has the symptoms I see matching a cause.
Last evening, I did an Erase (Zero out the HD, 1 pass) and a virgin , custom install from the eMac Media DVD that came with the machine; this took the system to Os 10.3.6, and it seemed to let me open more windows than two(2) for several passes, but it still froze, these times leaving no recovered files as a trail.
I decided to use only Apple’s Software Update, under Safe Boot, to sequentially load only system or Java UDs and not let Safari or any iApp stuff bring in foreign SW components(tis strategy caused by finding, last evening, strange troubles with the Font book not validating any font and it displaying most of these incorrectly. This font finding kept me thinking SW had to be the problem instead of heeding your and Alan Jones experience …
All well and good, and when I got to 10.3.9 with all the Java and Security Uds, I could open as many as 4 Apps, but the killer was always testing the “Flurry” screen saver … lots of video here. Yet in Safe Boot, I could open all the Apps in the folder and randomly switch between them with no issues.
Lot of driving chores today kept me from seeing your second reply till late this afternoon, but as I drove I remembered that on my now ancient Power Mac Mirror Door, 2x1Ghz, one of my partitions had 10.3.9 loaded with free Unix scientific SW and Xbench 1.1.3 and Cinebench 2003, both of which test video cards, etc. So, I loaded and made DVDs of these testing apps after running them on the PMMD in the 10.3 partition as well as my normal 10.4.11 main drive. Got them over on the eMac, checked to make sure its fonts were OK, ran the tests under Safe Boot, then saw immediate freezes under Normal Boots, and finally, logged into the Apple site and read your reasoning. Bingo!
I again checked the caps I could see and they matched your ID of them, still, even with a machinists mirror could not see the ones further in … called the school marm and told her we should consider this eM as nearly dead, use its internal organs (HD, RAM, ATA drive) and externals (Keyboards, cables) in our organ donor program. She’s agreed, so it’s a done deal.
So, tomorrow I’ll satisfy my curiosity and do the surgery to remove the innards and see if there is evidence of the caps … sure there will be. BTW, I made my living, till a good severance package induced early retirement , as a PhD level Materials Scientist/Elec Engineer (mostly in chip level packaging and several forays into flat panel electronic displays (LCDs and OLEDS(Orgainc Light Emitting Diodes)). As I looked at the circuit board, these electrolytics seem to be surface mounted, an unusual design even for its day, and I cannot imagine any “shade tree” electrician having much success trying to replace them.
Again, a thank you for your insight. I’ll just have to owe you a beer since I’m doubtful you would get one I’d drop along the seashore. Take good care … and without checking a map, I hope Brisbane is not being flooded.
    drsax
PS I forgot to mark your and Allan Jones earlier replies as Helpful which they were ... just did so. Sorry for the oversight. Owe you both a beer for sharing your experience.

    Hi
Instead of using the LOOP under LOOP directly. use the read statement for second loop and from that index u start the loop.
    eg:
    LOOP AT ITAB1.
    read table itab2 with key field1 = itab1 - field1.
    if sy-subrc = 0.
    loop at itab2 index sy-tabix.
    if  itab2-field1 = itab1 - field1.
    < do u  r operations >
    else.
      exit.
    endif.
    ENDLOOP.
    this will increase the performance

  • Why wont my mac book turn on completly it just shows the start screen and under the appl theres a bar that keeps loading and when its done it just powers off  why is this happening??????

Why won't my macbook air turn on completly just at the start up page and under the apple logo there's a bar that just loads and when its done loading the Mac just powers off this just happens over and over I'm afraid if I do any thing my pictures will be lost on the computer ???

    Hi jasonfromforthworth,
Thanks for the question.  If you have updated to Yosemite, then the Apple Logo with the status bar is the expected behavior for when the computer starts up.  However, the powering off is not supposed to be happening ... so here are some steps to take if your MacBook Air won't turn on.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
    Starting up in Safe Mode
Follow these steps to start up into Safe Mode.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup, but not before the startup sound.
Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it may take longer than usual to reach the login screen. This is because your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1367
This article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on. To differentiate this from a display issue, be sure that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
There is no video on your built-in or external display
If your computer has power but doesn't display any video, it may have one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see a light from the Sleep LED (if your Mac has one).
Pressing the Caps Lock key on the keyboard causes it to light.
If any of these display-related conditions occur, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead. Otherwise, continue with this article.
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
    Reset the SMC.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • Cannot start Cube Viewer under Linux

The following bug was found for Windows platform.
Do anyone have the patch for LINUX- SUSE. I have got the same problem under Linux but the patch is used for Window but it isn't any pacth for Linux there.
The below description ist the same as for UNIX.
    fact: MS Windows NT
    fact: MS Windows 2000
    fact: MS Windows XP
    fact: Oracle OLAP Server 9.2.0.1.0
    fact: Oracle Enterprise Manger 9.2.0.1.0
symptom: Olap Cube Viewer cannot be started
symptom: An empty error window with a fire alarm symbol is displayed
cause: Running Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 Enterprise Edition with the OLAP option on
    MS Windows.
    In Oracle Enterprise Manager Console:
    1. Startup the 9.2.0.1.0 Relational Database System.
    2. In Enterprise Manager: Select subtree Warehouse + OLAP + Cubes + SH
    3. Right-click on the COST_CUBE and select CUBE VIEWER from the popup menu.
Minimize the Oracle Enterprise Manager Console window to see the window that
is opened in the background. It says: "No materialized views have been
created for this cube ... Do you want to continue viewing the cube?"
    => select button "Yes".
Then the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cube Viewer starts loading. An error
window with a fire alarm symbol and with an OK-button appears. There is no
window title or error text displayed in the window.
Selecting the OK-button will close the cube viewer window and the 9.2.0.1

Thanks in advance for your help.
    Mehdi

Patch/one-off 2323002 is not an issue with Linux. It addresses a bug on Windows 2000 & XP. Note that the Cube Viewer currently does not work with the SH Cubes. In short, there is an issue with support of denormalized snow flake schema. This will be fixed for Linux once the upcoming 9.2.0.2 patch set is released on MetaLink around Oct 4th.
Cube Viewer does require that the OLAPI jar files located in $ORACLE_HOME\olap\olapi\lib be the exact same version as the Database Server. So you may have to update the OLAPI jar files on the machine that is running Cube Viewer. Download from the Database Server the correct express*.jar file and copy it to the OLAPI lib directory. Another thing, you may be running into the bug where CV hangs while writing to the log file. To fix this problem, please email me and ask for the Cube Viewer zip. I'll send you some files and intstructions.

  • Node Manager starting managed servers under different users

    Hi all,
I have multiple domains running on the same server.
Is it possible to get node manager to start managed servers from different domains under different users?
Default is the user under which node manager was started originally.
    Thanks
    Arnaud

Oracle documentation is still in confussion state for Unix platform nodemanager.
NodeManager Admin Guide had chapter 3 for General configuration of nodemanger. Chapter 5 is for script based nodemanager.
In chapter 5 there is clear way defined for " Starting a node manger for Unix machine".
chapter 3 is mess there is clear-cut direction to reach the remote startup of servers.
Why we have so many types of nodemanager for connect. howbout start them?
Can someone expert in Oracle WebLogic please respond to this.
*Nodemanagers are NOT meant for multiuser development env.
They are defined for production env and for HA, FailOver.*

  • Mac auto start once shutdown under windows mode in boot camp

    This is the situation:
I run windows xp on my macbook pro. When I finished using it and perform shut down, everything is still fine. The problem occurs when I plug in my laptop to a power source when the computer is shutdown. As soon as I connect the power adapter, the computer will automatically start up itself?
Any ideas what's wrong with it?
    Thanks for the help.

Hi V.K., I followed the reset steps for PRAM and the problem still exist. Could this be the battery's problem? BTW, my laptop is still fairly new, got it in December.
    Thanks for your help

  • HELP! iPod sorting artists that start with "The" under "T"

OK, so I synced my iPod classic last night, and now ALL artists that start with "The" are listed alphabetically under "T". Prior to last sync, it had never done this. I didn't change any setting, the only reason for the sync was to add a podcast that had downloaded. It also appears that the sorting feature is no longer ignoring punctuation, because "Weird Al" Yankovic is now alphabetically first, as opposed to under "W" where he was previously. What happened, and how do I get it back to normal?
    Thanks

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
It should sort itself out if you reset your iPod, otherwise you will need to do a complete restore. If you are not familiar with those terms take at look at http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/

  • Performance issue Java Swing under Windows 7

    Hello,
we have MDI Java Swing application running under Window7. We got a big problem with performance in MDI Windows using AERO.
Exist any way for Java to tell Win7 that it should not use Aero??
    Thank you,
    David.
    Edited by: 969767 on 6.11.2012 3:33

If you try to open properties dialog for application (or app shortcut) there you can see "Compatibility" tab and there is check box "Disable visual themes". If we disable this theme our java swing app is very better performance under Windows 7. We need to disable visual theme via java code, if it is possible...
    Thanks.

  • Cs4 should start a service under windows7

    Hi
    under w7 i have cs5 and cs4
cs5 trial , when started run a service that keeps in memory for minutes
but cs4 did not start any service , it's strange
it should start a service (that checks if it's registerd or trial , in short to be legit)
    i did 2 full installations , cs5 in trial , cs4 registered
    is not normal?
which service should run cs4 ?
maybe there some issues to have both on the same windows 7 32bit
    thanks

I was having trouble installing CS5 also. I tried over and over, then uninstalled CS4 and CS5 both. Restarted CPU and reinstalled CS5.
Everything went as planned and the files were all uploaded.  Im not 100% yet because PS 64bit wont work, but everything else does and I think I need to figure out a setting in my Windows7 to fix that. At least I can get back to work.
I dont know if this will fix your problem, but it seemed I had problems until I did the install that way. (Dont uninstall Acrobat Pro 9 in CS4).

  • Fan is running with 100% performance starting Satellite P750-10t PSAY3

    Hi all,
I got a Problem with my Laptop.
I bought this Laptop last week and I noticed some unwated shutdowns thanks to overheating. Everytime I power it on the fan is running with about 100% performance but when I finally get into my OS (Win 7, 64 bit as it was delivered) it stops regulating.
If I start playing games or more than 1 Adobe Product at the same time it starts getting hotter.
Whenever I Check the temperature via Toshiba PC Health Monitor it shows that the temperature is at a chritical point but the fan is still running with about 30 - 40% (80% shown)... its not even half as loud as it is after turning the pc on.
I dont know what to do now?! Are there any Toshiba Programs/tools to fix this?
I tried Speedfan and some other programs but they dont even show my fans.
    Sorry for my bad english.

    Hi
If you did not change any settings in the past, I recommend editing the power plant settings of the Win 7 power options.
Here a nice How to which describes detailed the single options:
+How to handle the power managment features of Windows 7+
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD12017W0001R01.htm
take a look to the option called: Toshiba Power Saver:
Here you can set the cooling method to maximum CPU performance.
This will allow the fan running faster.
Additionally you should change the Processor power management: Minimum processor state and Maximum processor state.
Last but not leas start the tool called Toshiab HWSetup.
Here choose the CPU tab and set it to low.
Then reboot the unit and test the functionality.

  • Performance problems with CS2 under Vista

I used to run CS2 under XP and everything was fine! A technical fault with the PC caused the hard drive to wipe itself, and for some silly reason I installed Vista when I reinstalled everything.
The PC is very powerful and has plenty of RAM, but CS2 runs very badly on it. It can run normally, usually for the first few seconds of use, but will inevitably slow down. Anything to do with an onscreen image, such as marking an area, painting, anything. I mean it really slows to a crawl. Positioning the cursor on a location and rapidly moving it to one side, there can be a delay of several seconds before it moves! This really makes the software unusable. Thing is, I cant tie down what it causing it. The CPU use hits 100% which is the obvious reason, but why it is, I dont know. There doesnt seem to be any disc access. Also, it doesnt depend on how large or small the image is. It happens even editing an image as small as 400x400. If there is one thing, then it may well be that it is when the image is enlarged so that it is bigger than the window it is displayed in. In other words, the scroll bars are present. It never seems to happen when they are not present. Does anyone have any ideas? All the drivers are fully up to date, nothing is causing problems. the machine scores 5.9 on the vista performance test and it has 4GB of ram.

Am I looking in the wrong place?
    Were can it be modified?
I was adjusting it in the window color and appearance. Advanced. The only problem was that I couldn't adjust the color of the window frames under aero. Specifically things like the status bar. I currently use an old style windows setup because I can set everything to mid gray, including scroll barss, status bars and so on. It may be boring, but is best for the type of work I do.
By the way, I have cured the problem. Under Performance Visual Effects, I disabled all the silly stuff that is hardly ever used like "Slide theTask barar Buttons" and the problem went away. Some of these are not actually used unless you use Aero anyway. I don't know which one was causing the problem, but anyway, it's gone!
I would still like to be able to set all the colors under aero, so if anyone can tell me how, would be greatly appreciated.

  • OSX doesn't start but XP under bootcamp runs fine

I am having OSX start up problems. I have tried save mode, starting from my Snow leopard DVD, resetting the SMC.
The strange thing is that the Mac HD seems to have disappeared. When I tried to reinstall Snow Leopard the Mac HD wasn't even put forward as an option.
Now it gets stranger as XP works fine under bootcamp, I can see the HD and all files seems to be there. So in effect I now have a Windows Mac...who would have throught
Anybody any suggestions before I spend a bundle on repair ?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem, I don't know about you but I got used to just restarting and holding down the option key to switch between each OS. However, when my mac install 'disappeared' I went into the bootcamp control panel via the windows partition and selected to reboot in mac mode and it worked, even though the alt key restart did not.
So you can try that if you have not already.
There is definitely a larger problem here though, I think a firmware update seems to be needed...

  • I've started getting pop-under ads every time I launch Firefox, and the uninstall instructions don't make sense, how can I stop these?

In the past couple of weeks, every time I launch Firefox, a full-size pop-under ad is also launched, regardless of what site I'm browsing.
The original ad was for a You Tube survey, and contains a link to coupondropdown.com, where there's a menu option for uninstalling. The uninstall instructions don't make sense, they don't mention what ad-on is controlling the ads, and I can't work out what's responsible for the ads from my very basic range of ad-ons.
The reason I'm writing is that the ads have progressed from annoying but harmless, to dangerous. The ad today was designed as a warning pop-up, text reads, "Threat Detected: Immediate Action Required. Fatal Registry Error ... click "Repair All" to eliminate all possible threats and clean your PC". I have screenshots of all the above.
I'm worried that another user, my son or mother, might take this warning seriously and install malware by accident. What can I do to prevent these ads? I expect this type of malware advertising on dodgy websites, but I'm getting them when I try to access hotmail, the news, etc, so it's not the website that's causing them.

Found the source using Microsoft Safety Scanner on a full scan. The culprit was a Trojan:Win32/Sirefef!cfg
