Performance with filter selection lilst in answers
Hi,
We have one subject area with 7 Dimensions and 2 fact tables (both are very huge). In Answers, whenever the filters are selected on Dimension Attributes for list of values, it is taking long time to populate the list of values. The backend query generated is trying to join to fact table to get the list of valid values based on other filters. Is there a way to change this behaviour. Lets say, if a filter is selected from Dimension 1 attribute 1 , then it needs to generate query something similar like this (SELECT DISTINCT ATTRIBUTE 1 from DIMENSION1) instead of generating query like (SELECT DISTINCT ATTRIBUTE 1 from DIMENSION D1 , FACT F1, DIMENSION D2 where D1.SID = F1.SID1 and D2.SID = F1.SID2 and D2.Attribute3 = 'XXXX').
Is this possible ?
Thanks for your help
Looks like the fact table is physically mapped for dimension in BMM layer. In this case you are forcing dimension table to join with fact for any reason.
Look at your configuration, if you really need to have force join then only physically map fact if not go for Logical Table Source.
Hope this helps.

Performance issue after Upgrade from 4.7 to ECC 6.0 with a select query
Hi All,
There is a Performance issue after Upgrade from 4.7 to ECC 6.0 with a select query in a report painter.
This query is working fine when executed in 4.7 system where as it is running for more time in ECC6.0.
Select query is on the table COSP.
SELECT (FIELD_LIST)
INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF TABLE I_COSP PACKAGE SIZE 1000
FROM COSP CLIENT SPECIFIED
WHERE GJAHR IN SELR_GJAHR
AND KSTAR IN SELR_KSTAR
AND LEDNR EQ '00'
AND OBJNR IN SELR_OBJNR
AND PERBL IN SELR_PERBL
AND VERSN IN SELR_VERSN
AND WRTTP IN SELR_WRTTP
AND MANDT IN MANDTTAB
GROUP BY (GROUP_LIST).
LOOP AT I_COSP .
COSP = I_COSP .
PERFORM PCOSP USING I_COSP-_COUNTER.
CLEAR: $RWTAB, COSP .
CLEAR CCR1S .
ENDLOOP.
ENDSELECT.
I have checked with the table indexes, they were same as in 4.7 system.
What can be the reson for the difference in execution time. How can this be reduced without adjusting the select query.
Thanks in advance for the responses.
Regards,
Dedeepya.Hi,
ohhhhh....... lots of problems in select query......this is not the way you should write it.
Some generic comments:
1. never use SELECT
endselect.
SELECT
into table
for all entries in table
where.
use perform statment after this selection.
2. Do not use into corresponding fields. use exact structure type.
3. use proper sequence of fields in the where condition so that it helps table go according to indexes.
e.g in your case
sequence should be
LEDNR
OBJNR
GJAHR
WRTTP
VERSN
KSTAR
HRKFT
VRGNG
VBUND
PARGB
BEKNZ
TWAER
PERBL
sequence should be same as defined in table.
Always keep select query as simple as possible and perform all other calculations etc. afterwords.
I hope it helps.

Performance issue with the Select query
Hi,
I have an issue with the performance with a seclet query.
In table AFRU - AUFNR is not a key field.
So i had selected the low and high values into s_reuck and used it in Where condition.
Still i have an issue with the Performance.
SELECT SINGLE RUECK
RMZHL
IEDD
AUFNR
STOKZ
STZHL
FROM AFRU INTO table t_AFRU
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN T_ZSCPRT100
WHERE RUECK IN S_RUECK AND
AUFNR = T_ZSCPRT100-AUFNR AND
STOKZ = SPACE AND
STZHL = 0.
I had also cheked by createing an index for AUFNR in the table AFRU...it does not help.
Is there anyway that we can declare Key field while declaring the Internal table....?
ANy suggestions to fix the performance issue is apprecaited!
Regards,

Thank you for your quick response!

STZHL = 0.
Using AUFNR, get AUFPL from AFKO
Using AUFPL, get RUECK from AFVC
Using RUEKC, read AFRU
In other words, one select joining AFKO <-> AFVC <-> AFRU should get what you want.
This is my select query, would you want me to write another select query to meet this criteria..
From AUFNR> I will get AUFPL from AFKO> BAsed on AUFPL I will get RUECK, based on RUEKC i need to read AFRU..but i need to select few field from AFRu based on AUFNR....
ANy suggestions wil be appreciated!

Be careful; post the code you're actually running.
query 1: select count(*) from TEST_DATA where trunc(fdate) = trunc(sysdate);
query 2: select count(*) from TEST_DATA where fdate between trunc(sysdate) and trunc(SYSDATE) + .99999;
query 3: select count(*) from TEST_DATA where fdate between to_date('21-APR-10', 'dd-MON-yy') and to_date('21-APR-10 23:59:59', 'DD-MON-YY hh24:mi:ss');
My questions:
1) Why isn't the index t_indx used in Execution plan 1?To use an index, the indexed column must stand alone as one of the operands. If you had a function-based index on TRUNC (fdate), then it might be used in Query 1, because the left operand of = is TRUNC (fdate).
2) From the execution plan, I see that query 2 & 3 is better than query 1. I do not see any difference between execution plan 2 & 3. Which one is better? That depends on what you mean by "better".
If "better" means faster, you've already shown that one is about as good as the other.
Queries 2 and 3 are doing different things. Assuming the table stays the same, Query 2 may give different results every day, but the results of Query 3 will never change.
For clarity, I prefer:
WHERE fdate >= TRUNC (SYSDATE)
AND fdate < TRUNC (SYSDATE) + 1(or replace SYSDATE with a TO_DATE expression, depending on the requirements).
3) I read somewhere - "Always check the Access Predicates and Filter Predicates of Explain Plan carefully to determine which columns are contributing to a Range Scan and which columns are merely filtering the returned rows. Be sceptical if the same clause is shown in both."
Is that true for Execution plan 2 & 3?
3) Could some one explain what the filter & access predicate mean here?Sorry, I can't. -
Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870
Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in. -
Report performance with Hierarchies
Hi
How to improve query performance with hierarchies. We have to do lot of navigation's in the query and the volume of data size very big.
Thanks

Query Performance Is "Aggregates" the way out for me?
/people/vikash.agrawal/blog/2006/04/17/query-performance-150-is-aggregates-the-way-out-for-me
° the OLAP cache is architected to store query result sets and to give all users access to those result sets.
If a user executes a query, the result set for that querys request can be stored in the OLAP cache; if that same query (or a derivative) is then executed by another user, the subsequent query request can be filled by accessing the result set already stored in the OLAP cache.
In this way, a query request filled from the OLAP cache is significantly faster than queries that receive their result set from database access
° The indexes that are created in the fact table for each dimension allow you to easily find and select the data
see http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/80/1a6473e07211d2acb80000e829fbfe/content.htm
° when you load data into the InfoCube, each request has its own request ID, which is included in the fact table in the packet dimension.
This (besides giving the possibility to manage/delete single request) increases the volume of data, and reduces performance in reporting, as the system has to aggregate with the request ID every time you execute a query. Using compressing, you can eliminate these disadvantages, and bring data from different requests together into one single request (request ID 0).
This function is critical, as the compressed data can no longer be deleted from the InfoCube using its request IDs and, logically, you must be absolutely certain that the data loaded into the InfoCube is correct.
see http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/ca/aa6437e7a4080ee10000009b38f842/content.htm
° by using partitioning you can split up the whole dataset for an InfoCube into several, smaller, physically independent and redundancy-free units. Thanks to this separation, performance is increased when reporting, or also when deleting data from the InfoCube.
see http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/33/dc2038aa3bcd23e10000009b38f8cf/content.htm
Hope it helps!

SSRS Report with mutli select values in parameters
Hi All,
I am creating a SSRS report and displaying the result in tablix. I want to make the report to filter by multi select values from the parameters.
I have 3 parameters. For all the three parameters, I have set "Default Values" and "Available Values". Also, modified my result dataset to get the values from parameters using "WHERE ID = @Parameter1" (example) and so
on..
3 Parameters types: 1. Yes or No
2. Date 3. Values with NULL in the DB
Problems:
1. When I am passing the default values "Yes" "No" - it is throwing errors because default values is passed as Yes "AND" No instead of "OR" condition. The value stored in the DB wil have either Yes or No but not both.
2. When I am querying the date values, it is a DateTime field in the DB. But I have queried like SELECT CONVERT(DATE, EXE_DATE) AS DATE FROM table which is giving only date in SQL but in SSRS displaying date with time.
3. When I pull the list of values for third Parameter from SQL, it has some NULL values. When I try to use it in SSRS, it is not displaying the NULL value as select option in the list of values
Any suggestions for the above three problems for SSRS with multi select values as filter will be helpful.
Maruthu | My BlogHi Maruthi,
Regarding the three things:
1.) I believe your first parameter is mutliselect , please convert it to single select.
Steps:
a.) Select the parameter, right click and go to parameter properties
b.) Under General Tab in DataType section remove the checkbox for Allow Multiple Value.
2.) Instead of returning as the date please return string. For example :
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR, GETDATE(),101)
Here is the list of conversion : http://www.sqlusa.com/bestpractices/datetimeconversion/
3.) As such there is no concept of null in SSRS. (Its a relational concept) . We do have nothing , which means empty. In Order to use null please select the Allow null option in the DataType section of the Parameter, This will add an checkbox for null in
the report preview. Its developer job to handle the null values in there query.

Performance issue when selection LIPS table into program.
Hi expert,
I have created Pending sales order report , in that i am facing performance problem for selection of LIPS table.
i have tried to use VLPMA table but performance has not been improved so, is their any need to create secondary index and
if yes then which fields of lips table i have to includes in index.
Please reply.

Please do some more research before offering advice:
PACKAGE SIZE is for memory management, not performance.
Creating a secondary index is using a hammer to swat a fly and the order in the SELECT is not relevant.
FAE does not improve performance over a JOIN.

Crystal Report linked to a table with filter attached
I have a Crystal Report based on 2 tables and I want it to display every incident in the incident table and to pull the truckID of the
first truck on the scene from the truck table . So the finished product should look like this…
IncidentID IncidentNum ResponseTime First Arriving Truck Disctict
1x44452 1258ab55 5:32 B8 2
*The first arriving truck is the truck in the Truck Table with the same IncidentID and the earliest ArrivalTime. There will be multiple trucks for each incident but I want it to only show the one that arrived first (ArrivalTime). So one line per incidentID.
Incident Table
IncidentID
IncidentNum
ResponseTime
District
Truck Table (Will contain many trucks for one incident with the following info
Truckkey
IncidentID (Link to Incident Table)
ArrivalTime
TruckID
I figure I probably need to build a formula with the min function or perhaps an OnCommand – I’m just not sure.
The biggest issue is the overall report has 4 filter settings. They can select a date range, a location, an incident type and a range for the response time. So I do this with the Select Expert
I can get all of that to work except I cannot figure out how to get it to pull the First Arriving Truck without duplicating the incident
line. Also, if there is a Truck with an ArrivalTime of Null I want it to ignore that Truck Table record.
Can anyone help???Hi Debbie,,
You may try this:
1) Go to the Group Expert > Create a Group on the 'Incident ID' field from the Incident Table
2) Insert a summary on the 'Arrival Time' field and place the field on the Group Footer
3) Move all the fields from the Details section to the Group Footer
4) Go to the Group Selection Formula (Report > Selection Formulas > Group) and use this code:
{Truck.ArrivalTime} = Minimum({Truck.ArrivalTime}, {Incident ID})
5) Suppress the Details Section

Performance problem in select data from data base
hello all,
could you please suggest me which select statement is good for fetch data form data base if data base contain more than 10 lac records.
i am using SELECT PACKAGE SIZE n statement, but it's taking lot of time .
with best regards
srinivas rathodHi Srinivas,
if you have huge data and selecting ,you could decrease little bit time if you use better techniques.
I do not think SELECT PACKAGE SIZE will give good performance
see the below examples :
ABAP Code Samples for Simple Performance Tuning Techniques
1. Query including select and sorting functionality
tables: mara, mast.
data: begin of itab_new occurs 0,
matnr like mara-matnr,
ernam like mara-ernam,
mtart like mara-mtart,
matkl like mara-matkl,
werks like mast-werks,
aenam like mast-aenam,
stlal like mast-stlal,
end of itab_new.
select fmatnr fernam fmtart fmatkl gwerks gaenam g~stlal
into table itab_new from mara as f inner join mast as g on
fmatnr = gmatnr where gstlal = '01' order by fernam.
Code B
tables: mara, mast.
data: begin of itab_new occurs 0,
matnr like mara-matnr,
ernam like mara-ernam,
mtart like mara-mtart,
matkl like mara-matkl,
werks like mast-werks,
aenam like mast-aenam,
stlal like mast-stlal,
end of itab_new.
select fmatnr fernam fmtart fmatkl gwerks gaenam g~stlal
into table itab_new from mara as f inner join mast as g on f~matnr =
gmatnr where gstlal = '01'.
sort itab_new by ernam.
Both the above codes essentially do the same function, but the execution time for code B is considerably lesser than that of Code A. Reason: The Order by clause associated with a select statement increases the execution time of the statement, so it is profitable to sort the internal table once after selecting the data.
2. Performance Improvement Due to Identical Statements Execution Plan
Consider the below queries and their levels of efficiencies is saving the execution
tables: mara, mast.
data: begin of itab_new occurs 0,
matnr like mara-matnr,
ernam like mara-ernam,
mtart like mara-mtart,
matkl like mara-matkl,
werks like mast-werks,
aenam like mast-aenam,
stlal like mast-stlal,
end of itab_new.
select fmatnr fernam fmtart fmatkl gwerks gaenam g~stlal
into table itab_new from mara as f inner join mast as g on f~matnr =
gmatnr where gstlal = '01' .
sort itab_new.
select fmatnr fernam
fmtart fmatkl gwerks gaenam g~stlal
into table itab_new from mara as
f inner join mast as g on f~matnr =
gmatnr where gstlal
= '01' .
Code D (Identical Select Statements)
tables: mara, mast.
data: begin of itab_new occurs 0,
matnr like mara-matnr,
ernam like mara-ernam,
mtart like mara-mtart,
matkl like mara-matkl,
werks like mast-werks,
aenam like mast-aenam,
stlal like mast-stlal,
end of itab_new.
select fmatnr fernam fmtart fmatkl gwerks gaenam g~stlal
into table itab_new from mara as f inner join mast as g on f~matnr =
gmatnr where gstlal = '01' .
sort itab_new.
select fmatnr fernam fmtart fmatkl gwerks gaenam g~stlal
into table itab_new from mara as f inner join mast as g on f~matnr =
gmatnr where gstlal = '01' .
Both the above codes essentially do the same function, but the execution time for code B is considerably lesser than that of Code A. Reason: Each SQL statement during the process of execution is converted into a series of database operation phases. In the second phase of conversion (Prepare phase) an execution plan is determined for the current SQL statement and it is stored, if in the program any identical select statement is used, then the same execution plan is reused to save time. So retain the structure of the select statement as the same when it is used more than once in the program.
3. Reducing Parse Time Using Aliasing
A statement which does not have a cached execution plan should be parsed before execution; this parsing phase is a highly time and resource consuming, so parsing time for any sql query must include an alias name in it for the following reason.
1. Providing the alias name will enable the query engine to resolve the tables to which the specified fields belong to.
2. Providing a short alias name, (a single character alias name) is more efficient that providing a big alias name.
Code E
select jmatnr jernam jmtart jmatkl
gwerks gaenam g~stlal into table itab_new from mara as
j inner join mast as g on jmatnr = gmatnr where
g~stlal = '01' .
In the above code the alias name used is j .
4. Performance Tuning Using Order by Clause
If in a SQL query you are going to read a particular database record based on some key values mentioned in the select statement, then the read query can be very well optimized by ordering the fields in the same order in which we are going to read them in the read query.
Code F
tables: mara, mast.
data: begin of itab_new occurs 0,
matnr like mara-matnr,
ernam like mara-ernam,
mtart like mara-mtart,
matkl like mara-matkl,
end of itab_new.
select MATNR ERNAM MTART MATKL from mara into table itab_new where
MTART = 'HAWA' ORDER BY MATNR ERNAM MTART MATKL.
read table itab_new with key MATNR = 'PAINT1' ERNAM = 'RAMANUM'
MTART = 'HAWA' MATKL = 'OFFICE'.
Code G
tables: mara, mast.
data: begin of itab_new occurs 0,
matnr like mara-matnr,
ernam like mara-ernam,
mtart like mara-mtart,
matkl like mara-matkl,
end of itab_new.
select MATNR ERNAM MTART MATKL from mara into table itab_new where
MTART = 'HAWA' ORDER BY ERNAM MATKL MATNR MTART.
read table itab_new with key MATNR = 'PAINT1' ERNAM = 'RAMANUM'
MTART = 'HAWA' MATKL = 'OFFICE'.
In the above code F, the read statement following the select statement is having the order of the keys as MATNR, ERNAM, MTART, MATKL. So it is less time intensive if the internal table is ordered in the same order as that of the keys in the read statement.
5. Performance Tuning Using Binary Search
A very simple but useful method of fine tuning performance of a read statement is using Binary search addition to it. If the internal table consists of more than 20 entries then the traditional linear search method proves to be more time intensive.
Code H
select * from mara into corresponding fields of table intab.
sort intab.
read table intab with key matnr = '11530' binary search.
Code I
select * from mara into corresponding fields of table intab.
sort intab.
read table intab with key matnr = '11530'.

You please try the following steps:
1. Say the InfoObject is 0EMPLOYEE against which you have created the variable, which user is trying to select value against, when they execute the report.
2. Goto RSA1-> InfoObject tab-> Select InfoObject 0EMPLOYEE.
3. Selcet the following options:
Query Execution Filter Val. Selectn - 'Only Posted Value for Navigation'
Filter Value Repr. At Query Exec. - 'Selector Box Without Values'
Please let me know if there is any more issue. Feel free to raise further concern

Using FILTER function in oracle answers
Gurus,
I have a question related to using Filter function in oracle answers.
When trying to insert a Filter (expr) Using (expr) clause in the formula area of a fact table field, It errored out with msg saying about using a wrong measure.
I know this can be done with a case expression but I tried filter clause since this is available in oracle answers.
Please help me figuring out this scenario.
Thanks.David / Raghu - Thanks for u'r replies and apologizes for not posting question with proper material.
Am posting my code and the error message from the screen.
Code :
IFNULL(FILTER("Fact - MBS Loan Transactions"."OUTSTANDING PRINCIPAL" USING "Dim - MBS Loan"."LOAN TYPE HPD/HDC/BNK" = 'HDC'),0)
Error :
nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 22032] Function FILTER requires at least one measure attribute in its first argument. (HY000)
SQL Issued: SELECT "Dim - MBS Loan"."LOAN AMOUNT", "Dim - MBS Loan"."LOAN TYPE HPD/HDC/BNK", "Dim - MBS Loan"."LOAN TYPE SEN/SUB", "Dim - MBS Project"."PROJECT NAME", "Dim - MBS Project"."PROJECT NUMBER", "Fact - MBS Loan Transactions"."AR BALANCE INTEREST", "Fact - MBS Loan Transactions"."GL BALANCE INTEREST", IFNULL(FILTER("Fact - MBS Loan Transactions"."OUTSTANDING PRINCIPAL" USING "Dim - MBS Loan"."LOAN TYPE HPD/HDC/BNK" = 'HDC'),0) FROM "Financials - MBS"

Key :ProjectUID
Parentkey: (none)
Display Value: ProjectName

Column 'ProjectName' does not allow nulls.”
I don’t know what should I do
