Periodic active window deselection in mountain lion

When working in a window of an app, the window randomly, but regularly deselects and title bar grays out.  If I'm typing something at the time I get a warning sound with each keystroke.  I have to mouse click back in the window to reactivate it.  How do I stop this annoying behavior?

Hi John,
Since we started with OS X each release has cool new features and new little annoyances or things that don't work. Plus these days everyone is an "expert", so we get no real help from Apple and tons of bad info - maybe especially on this, the Apple "support" site.
Sorry I assumed you recognized Applescript. Here's how to do it:
First, make sure the Finder window you want to work with is open and set up close to what you want (ie. sidebar hidden, view as list, sort by name, etc.)
Then open the AppleScript Editor app (which should be in the Utilities folder) and choose "New" from the File menu.
Paste in:
     tell application "Finder
          get bounds of window "Applications"
     end tell
Then click the "Run" button at the top of the window. It will return something like:{1604, 44, 1864, 1165}, which are the rectangular coordinates of the window "Applications". The numbers represent left side, top, right side, and bottom.
That first script is just to get the start point for finding the rectangle you want to end up with.
Open another New script window from the File menu and paste in:
                tell application "Finder"
set bounds of window "Applications" to {1604, 44, 1864, 1165} -- or whatever rectangle you want
               end tell
When you click "Run" it will set the Applications window to the rect specified. Just play with the numbers to get the exact size and location you want.
I haven't tried rebooting yet, but you can save the script to run anytime, even add it to your startup items to make it run at boot time if necessary.
Cheers...

I'm sorry for my bad english, my problem is that I want the program I open in a new window to be avilable in full screen mode. • Can I dual boot windows 7 and mountain lion with an external hard drive.

I have Mac OSX mountain lion installed and running on my 2TB external hard drive. Boot camp says that I have to use the default flash storage that came with my computer.. Is there a way to put it on my external hard drive if I partition it? I also am having a problem when I tried to use the default storage the setup would not let me format it to NTFS

By default, Boot Camp formats the drive with FAT32. That's because Windows XP could be installed with FAT32 so, in order to write on that partition on Mac OS X, Boot Camp used it instead of NTFS.
If you want to install Windows 7 (it's the only version that your Mac supports), you will have to format the Boot Camp partition in NTFS manually. To do it, just start the Windows installation as usual but, on partitioning screen, choose "BOOTCAMP" volume, press "Drive options" and then, Format, so the partition will be formatted in NTFS and you will be able to install Windows

  • Finder Window Resize in Mountain Lion

Finder, Two Monitors, on one I keep a number of folders open in List View.  This suits my workflow.
In Lion we lost the the upper right hand button that switched on and off the Sidebar...OK, that changed, I can live with that.
Clearly it switches of and on by selecting the Window and View>Sidebar (off/on) or option>command S. OK..so far!
You could always resize a window by grabbing the lower right hand corner. Lion and back!!
(Letter A...see later) Now with Mountain Lion, in List View you can only size the window height and the width only adjusts just so far (too wide, I only want to see the filenames).
Switch Sidebar on and then off again and now the right hand corner works as it always has going back eons. and I can resize the window narrower as I want it.
Again...OK as far as it goes.  Now either Reboot, Restart or just log out and in and when Finder opens you see the window you sized as you left if for just a moment and then....ZONK, WOOSH....almost as if by magic and before your eyes...it pops back to some crazy default width that is too wide so now you I am back to Letter A (see above).  As you can see you are caught in a circle never being able to get back to how this Finder Software has worked for perhaps the past 20 or so years.
I accept that I may be doing something wrong...but I can't for the life of me find it in this group and have tried every preference I can find...nothing helps.  I sincerely think this is a bug...but I'm open to being enlightened (provided I can continue to use my long standing workflow).
    Thanks in advance!

  • Finder not opening new window automatically in Mountain lion 10.8

I recently upgraded to mountain lion 10.8 from Snow Leopard 10.7. Before when I rebooted the computer the Finder would always open a new window.  Now it does not and I have to open a new window every time. Is that the way it's supposed to be or is that a bug?

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.
Select the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and click Continue.
Select your other Mac's volume, such as "Macintosh HD", from the list, and click Cont
EDIT: Actually I realize you did follow these directions and if your drive is seen on the new Mac it should work. You're entitled to free Apple support with the new purchase, I'd give them a call.

  • AHH. Windows gone after mountain lion upgrade?

    Hi!
I have a late 2011 model MBP. And i had the dual boot option with windows 8 (release preview) installed. On Thursday (4 days ago) i upgraded OSX to mountain lion. But just today i had the necessity to back to windows, and the option is not there anymore... when i boot up my mac and press the "option key" the only hard drives i get are the "macintosh HD" and the "recovery 10.8".
    What happened to Windows?
I tried using boot camp to "remove windows 7" but after hours of "partitioning the Macintosh HD" i gave up and quit the application. All i wanted to do was remove windows completely and re-install it via boot camp again.
    Now i am windows-less. HELP!!!
Do i have an option of going back in time (kind of like system restore on windows) and going back to OSX lion? all i want is to go back 4 days ago when things were working fine.
oh no... something tells me i'm gonna have to erase everything on my mac and start all over again

Hi "thiememd" Unfortunately, i couldn't find a way to keep Windows on my mac so i erased the entire partition (without bootcamp) by following the steps in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8wdy5qW8Z8
Luckily, i had done a back up on windows b4 mountain lion screwed me over. so now all i'm gonna do is re install windows once again.

  • Info bar at bottom of window missing in Mountain Lion

I have a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard installed and at the bottom of finder windows, such as the Macintosh HD window, there is a bar which shows how much space is left on hard drive and also how many files/folders are selected. On my Macbook pro with Mountain Lion this bar is missing and I can't seem to get it show at all. Is this a feature of Mountain Lion as I found the info bar very useful?
    Thanks
    Peter

That's the status bar, hidden in OS X Lion and Mountain Lion by default. To show it, open a Finder window and go to View menu (on the menu bar) > Show Status Bar, so it will show up at the bottom of the Finder window

  • How do I remove parallels 6 and Windows 7 from mountain lion.

Hi guys I expect you all know that parallels six is no longer compatible with mountain lion. I do not want to upgrade to parallels seven but I do not now know how to uninstall parallels and the Windows 7 partition.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Cheers.

The uninstaller is located on the DVD or in the .dmg file you obtained when you purchased it. Otherwise,
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind 4.9, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper 2.0.1
    AppDelete 3.2.6
    Automaton 1.50
    Hazel
    AppCleaner 2.1.0
    CleanApp
    iTrash 1.8.2
    Amnesia
    Uninstaller 1.15.1
    Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.

  • Windows files with Mountain Lion

Do I still need MacFuse and/or NTFS-3G to read/write Windows files from my MBA with Mountain Lion?

    install osxfuse (current 2.5.0)
(not macfuse which is no longer maintained)
    https://github.com/osxfuse/osxfuse/downloads
install ntfs-3g (most recent binary 2010.10.2)
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/catacombae/
free version old-ish but ok-ish (gives an ignorable but annoying warning
"Did not receive a signal within 15.000000 seconds." on every mount ).

  • How do I install Windows 8 on Mountain Lion (mac mini) 2010 Server using bootcamp with out Optical Drive?

I have a 2010 Mac Mini server running 10.8.4 (12E55).  I just bought a brand new copy of Windows 8 from micrsoft.  I have tried using boot camp and it will not recognize a burned DVD in my remote optical drive on my laptop running windows 7 or my macbook running Lion 10.7.5.   I have had Microsoft on both of my computers remoted in for about 8 hours and they tried just about everything that I've tried.
Microsofts tech support has made me a bootable DVD and a bootable Flash Drive through remote desktop (awsome good job microsoft tech support).  I have even tried formatting my mac mini's second 500GB hard drive to FAT32 using this whole disc as my windows partition.  I know that when I go to install windows 8 it is going to reformat the drive to NTFS but all the articles that I've found, say this is what you have to do to get the drive formatted properly to get the ball rolling and get windows will fix it when it goes to install by reformatting to NTFS.
Ok so right now I have my second 500GB hdd on my mac mini formatted to FAT32 and I have tried to reboot holding my option key like I do on my mac book.  If I want to boot to a different hdd on my macbook all I do is hold the OPTION key during start up and you get prompted to choose one of the bootable disc that is on your computer.  Well if I put my USB drive which is bootable on my macbook into my macbook and do this right now its not showing up.
Now I just put the DVD that they made me in my macbook and it shows up as bootable disc.  But the USB doesn't.  (1 hour later)  I just got microsft to remake the USB drive and am going to try that again so ta ta for now and I'll come back on to post to tell you if it works.

  • Window server crashing mountain lion?

So my computer has crashed I think 5 times today, and I'm not sure what is going on.  I've had a problem with it crashing before, and people on this forum said the problem was with Parallels.  However, I'm still having problems after uninstalling Parallels, so I'm guessing that something else is causing the problem.  My crash logs (below) seem to indicate that the problem is with "window server."

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • How can I use Boot Camp in Mountain Lion to mount Windows XP?

I would like to use Windows XP on my 2009 13" MBP in Boot Camp? I have tried and it only asks for Windows 7 and when I use XP it says unable to install.
    1. Is this usual?
    2. If so, is there a work around?
I do not have Windows 7 nor will I purchase it. I want to use this computer primarily as Widows XP as my new 2012 MBP is for Mac! Please help!
    Thank you!

I concur with dalstott with the following additional information:
    1.  I am currently typing on my 2009 MBP.  I installed Windows XP in Bootcamp soon after I purchased it.  I then upgraded it to Snow Leopard and then later to Lion, and Lion is what I run today.
Bootcamp continues to function with Windows XP installed.  I also have Parallels 7, and, as one of the features of Parallels, I am able to use the Bootcamp partition to run Windows XP within Parallels, as well, for concurrent use of Windows XP and Mac OS X Lion (saving me the duplication of hard disk space if I had to have both the Bootcamp partition and the very large file that Parallels would create for Windows XP).
    2.  There may well be a way for you to install Bootcamp and Windows XP in Mountain Lion without restoring Snow Leopard:
This method requires access to a WIndows 7 upgrade disc, but you do not need the serial number and you never actually upgrade to WIndows 7 (stop after Step 8):
User Tip: BootCamp - Install Windows XP & then Windows 7
NOTE: Although the author of this User Tip suggests that it will work on all Macs running Mt. Lion, if you read the thread, you will see that others have had problems, and my post suggesting that this method will only work if the Mac could originally install Bootcamp with Windows XP such as yours and mine.
    3.  While searching for tip #2, I also came up with this suggestion:
Installing WinXP on Lion or above without BootCamp
Good luck and be sure to come back and let us know what works for you!
