Permanently mounted partitions displayed on desktop.

I do want my removeable storage devices to be shown on my Gnome-desktop, but some of my entries form fstab(but not all) is also displayed. The problem, my fstab and output from mount is shown in this screenshot. It is /dev/hdc3, /dev/hdc4 and /dev/sda1 that is shown on the desktop. I only want it to bee sda1, how do I fix this problem?

Thanks for the answer, looks like you'r right, but i do not get it to work. Looking at lshal,  there is no significant differences between the hdc1 entry and the hdc3 entry, even that one of them is hidden and the other one is displayed? Which key do I have to change to hide the hdc{3,4}-icons?

  • Kde newb - volumes to display on desktop

    Under Gnome mounted partitions are displayed as icons on my desktop.  Is there a way to get KDE to exhibit this behavior?  Sorry for the newb question.

    @markisthejob - I like this widget, but it only works on recently mounted partitions is seems... if I have a data partition mounted to /media/data it only shows up when first mounted.  If it's in /etc/fstab it doesn't show up in this view

  • Program to easily mount partitions

    I am using Xfce, I am searching for an application that would let me mount partition easily without typing.
    Something like when you start knoppix and you have all the icons of every partition on desktop. You only have to click to mount.
    I don't want to edit fstab. Also I have many drives and change them frequently so using fstab file is a no way.
    TIA

    Rox desktop will do this for you. That is one of the key things I use it for. I keep icons on  my desktop for all my major disks and removable drives and so on. A single click on the drive icon will run the standard mount command, leveraging the information you must have previously entered into fstab. I have never found a way to make it execute customized mount commands, although there may be a way to do this - if anyone reading this knows, please add to this thread.
    To try out rox, just download package "rox" from the Arch archives (pacman --sync rox) and try it out per:
    rox --pinboard=default
    This will give you an initially pretty bleak looking grey desktop with one folder on it called "home". If you right click that icon and select the Backdrop item, you can post a picture or pattern of your choosing to the desktop background. Looking better already, no?
    Now for those disk icons you were looking for... Using that one single folder called Home, navigate over to your /mount directory. Drag and drop icons from there onto your desktop. Now you have icons for your drives of interest on the desktop. You can change the actual icon image easily via the "set icon" selection after you right click the icon. Here you will also see a mount command, although you won't need it.
    Now, simply single click the desktop drive icon and voila! your drive is mounted. Unmounting takes two clicks - right click the icon and select the "unmount" option.
    Rox remembers everything you have done (background image, icons, etc.) and will redraw your desktop just as you left it next time you start Rox. You can easily embed it into a startup mechanism to have it start automatically. If you are using XFCE4, the easiest way is to create a directory called ~/Desktop/Autostart, and in there, put a one line shell script that does the "rox --pinboard=default" command. By the way, you don't have to use the name "default". You can call your default desktop anything. Rox allows you to have multiple different desktops if you want. Being AR, I have named mine "xfce4-rox-desktop". Call yours whatever name appeals to you. I used "default" as a simple example.
    Rox is enormously capable while being light and fast. You will be amazed if you spend some time with it, read the documentation on their web site and play around. Rox is great. I use the combo of XFCE4+Rox as a fully functional replacement for heavier window-manager/desktop combos like KDE or Gnome. No flames against either of those - I just wanted "faster and lighter".
    Good look, and if you have further questions, don't hesitate to post.

    Will I hurt anything on my system if I answer yes to continue or should the partition be unmounted before I do this?

    I think you wanted to say 10.6.8. 10.8.6 does not exist.
    The first thing I think is that zoom may be enabled. On Mac OS X 10.6.8, a way to disable it is to hold the Control key and scroll down with the mouse or trackpad until you can see the whole display. Another way would be to disable zoom in System Preferences > Universal Access

    You mean you transferred the media, not the library...
    Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location
    The library location is in your /Music/ oflder.
    Your media files (not yet in your new iTunes library ) is on the external drive.
    I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.
    Because you have not yet added anything to your library.
    Quit iTunes.
    On the external, create a new folder named My iTunes library (or something).
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library... and select My iTunes library on the external.
    Go into Windows Explorer and move all the media files on the external into /My iTunes Llibrary/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

  • Attempting to use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to a mounted partitioned drive?

    Had a power surge and my Mac Pro did not fare well. Was able to boot from one of the drives in read only mode, so I did a Time Capsule backup of everything on the drive. Reinstalled Mountain Lion. Booted the computer up and am trying to use Migration Assistant to take the Time Capsule backup and restore it to the 1TB drive. When I use Migration Assistant, it says that there is not enough space on the drive to do the restore. I looked in Disk Utility and saw that the start up disk is another one of the 1TB drives with about 600GB used, therefore not enough space to do the restore. I want to restore to the original drive, but it says it is a "Mounted Partitioned Drive". Can I use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to this mounted partitioned drive?
    Thanks in advance for any help - greatly appreciated.

    I am not sure, never had to go there, I have multiple bootable clones of the system online and off, and a couple 1500VA/900W UPS units powering everything.

  • Can the phone site be disabled and have phones display the desktop site while designing phone site?

    Currently, I have a live desktop design website which is being updated regularly. I tried to begin a phone site design, but was interrupted with a change to the desktop site (I'm adding new sponsors to an event on a regular basis). When I uploaded to the FTP, the phone site was also pushed through, making an unfinished page pop up on the browser of my phone. My phone site is going to be quite large in regards to page number and it's not practical to disable and enable each individual page.
    Can I have the phone site entirely disabled and have phones display the desktop site while in the process of designing the phone app? I will still need to update the desktop site during this design period.
    Thanks!

  • Permanent mount of Firewire Drive

    I use my FW drive from my iMac for time machine off my MBP. It works great as long as someone is logged on the iMac.
    The drive is not mounted on the iMac until someone logs on though. It also dismounts it when they logout and change accounts (as kids often do). How do I make this a permanent mount regardless of whether someone is logged in or not and that it stays when people logout and back in?
    Thanks,
    Keith...

    The trick to keeping external drives mounted after a logout lies in a little .plist file. The name of this file is autodiskmount.plist, and it does not exist by default; you have to make it. In the file should be the following text:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Put this file in:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    And reboot. (Yes, reboot.)
    Now all external drives (firewire, USB, eSATA, etc.) will stay mounted after a logout. If they're shared, they'll always be available. And they'll always be available to Time Machine.

    Until now when I power on the disk two icons appear on my MacBook, one Orange with a USB logo for the Data partition and other Green with Time MAchine logo for the Time MAchine partition.
    Suddenly when I power on in FInder I can see only the Data Partition. while in Desktop I can see both, but now the Time Machine Partition is orange with the USB logo (just like the Data partition).
    On the other hand everytinhg seems to be workning, I can acces both partitions and Time Machine apparently works Ok, but don't know if something is happening in the background, and I have all my data in that Disk!!!!!

    Excuse me if my explanation of the subject is not clear. Here is a screenshoot of what happens. In the left you can see the Finder window with just Data Partition, on the right Desktop with both.
    If you haven't yet, from a Finder window's menubar, select +Finder > Preferences > Sidebar.+ Un-check the +External Disks+ checkbox, wait a moment, then check it again.
    Try going to TM Preferences, de-selecting the drive (select "none"), waiting a moment, then re-selecting it.
    Try deleting the file <your home folder>/Library/com.apple.Finder.plist and either relaunch the Finder (from the +Force Quit+ menu) or Restart.

    1. check that it is ext4
    2. if it is, man chmod and man chown
    yes. i use chown xxx:xxx to solved problem.
    NOOO! Never chown entire partitions!
    If you would have read the mount man page you would have seen how you can mount partitions as rw for users
    Here's what I use for vfat (usb stick)
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb vfat users,exec,dev,suid 0 1
    I'm guessing you just need to add ext4 instead of vfat and it should work. You can mount without sudo and it'll be rw

  • Format - analyze - purge a disk with mounted partitions

    I'm trying to format a machine with multiple disks. To do this, I've been instructed to run format, then analyze, then purge on each of the disks. Unfortunately, each disk has at least one mounted partition and when I try to run purge, I get the following message:
    "Cannot do analysis on a mounted partition."
    I've been able to get around this problem on all but one of the disks by using umount and making appropriate edits to /etc/cfstab. That said, I'm stuck on the first disk where mounts like / and /var exist. It's my understanding that you can't unmount / - if this is the case, how do I purge the disk where / is mounted?
    Thanks,
    David

    You do realize the end result is that you will have no usable OS, right? If you do that's fine but I wanted to put that out there.
    Reboot from install media and run the commands from there. They will be in the single user environment.
