Permissions repair not working

Hello out there,
My G3 ibook uses OSX 10.3.9. When I try to "repair permissions" with either disk utilities or from the installation disk utillity I get the message---Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions because......No valid packages (-9997)
Does anyone know what this means? Is it good, bad or irrelevant? What do I need to do to really "repair permissions?"
Thanks in advance, Jim

Hi there:
You could see if booting from the Installer disc and running that version
of Disk Utility could help fix this issue. Also, see if starting up in SafeBoot
could help. I often use the built-in Disk Utility to repair permissions after
booting up in SafeBoot, then restart normally.
If you have renamed a folder or moved it in the system, you can make
things unexpectedly happen. Or if something has been removed.
Some people use 'single-user' mode and keyboard to access those kinds
of features beneath the GUI; so that is a possibility should other access
to this issue go without positive results. I seldom access my Macs in the
single-user mode, so those details are a bit sketchy to me now.
Good luck & happy computing!

I upgraded to leopard the day it came out and was very pleased with it. However, I am noticing that when I attempt to repair disk permissions in Disk Utility I get the following warnings:

I think I'm almost a charter member -- I resisted installing Leopard until the end of October but from then on it has been a long, strange trip, with an almost daily occurrence of some new bafflement. Even Apple seems baffled by some of Leopard's quirks, as evidenced by the increasing number of technical articles about Leopard that end in "This document will be updated as more information becomes available" & the ever increasing list of apps that don't play well with the OS, including many of Apple's.

  • Repair disk permissions does not work

Repair disk permissions does not work. Disk Uitliy fines many incorrect permissions (ACL found, but not expected) and says that it would repair it. However, when checked again, it finds the same permission errors.
I have tried Disk Utility as well as the command line "sudo diskutil repairPermissions /" (which probably does exactly the same as Disk Utility).
    Any hints?
    C.

Are you trying to Repair Permissions because you have file access problems in the System files, or just because you think you need to do it?
If the former, please explain what you are seeing. If the latter, stop wasting your time.
The things it doesn't repair are not repaired because there is nothing broken. The orginal Receipts files have the old settings, and subsequent updates have changed the permissions on those things to what they should be, now. It will report the differences it finds every time you run Repair Permissions because they will always be different and they should be the way they are.

  • DISK UTILITY "internal error" PERMISSIONS REPAIR NOT COMPLETING.

After downloading Software Updates, Disk Utility's Permissions Repair does not complete , says "internal error". Then must quit Disk Utility against computer's own advise that it may harm Hardrive?

From Apple's point of view, it's near impossible for them to test every possible update environments, so glitches like this are inevitable. This one seems to be quite widespread, so Apple could be accused of not testing enough. Apple may well release a new update to correct this problem.
At least, I suppose, they are good enough to provide these forums free of charge.
Before I perform any updates, I visit places like MacFixIt.com and MacInTouch.com to see if anyone has experienced any problems. There are plenty of people out there who are happy to go through the pain & frustration and to work out solutions for the benefit of the rest of us.
Did you fix your problem by the way?

  • Permissions Repair Not Completing-SR MBP

I got a new SR MacBook Pro yesterday. After I had installed Leopard (and the update) and all my software and other files I figured a permissions repair might clean some things up a bit. I repaired permissions but about 30 seconds in the progress bar froze in one location. I gave it 5 minutes to move but it didn't make any progress. At that point the fans came on so I checked what was making the comp so hot. Activity monitor showed installdb as the process taking up 75-90% of the CPU. I quit disk utility and restarted and the process was gone. I tried it agian and the progress bar jumped to the spot that it left off at and stayed there. Any idea what the deal is? Thanks.

Tried your suggestion, I selected repair permissions but it just say there for several minutes not doing anything. I booted normally and tried it again and I got the message: "Disk Aid Failed: The underlying task reported failure on exit."

  • Disk Utility Permissions repair not showing details

I have a brand new imac 24. When I run repair Permissions, I get this
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Permissions repair complete
It says "Estimated time less than 1 minute" which actua;ly takes a lot longer, seems to hang up at first.
However it is not going through the usual gobbldeegook you see in Tiger or Panther, Like thos pesky colorsync profiles etc.
Is this a system corruption or a bug in Leopards new Disk Utility? I used the Migration Utility to transfer some files from my G4.
I'm having serious issues with fonts not showing up in my APPS so I'm trying to resolve a huge problem thinking maybe Permissions are the reason.

    SparkyJ,
I was having that same issue with Repair Permissions, until I just started the process and let it go. It hung for several minutes before the process bar began to show activity. I have no idea why this is now happening, but Permissions are eventually getting repaired.

  • DIsk verify/repair not working

My computer seemed a bit slow and slightly erratic so it seemed time for a rerun of disk utility. Disk repair ran so far, then exited leaving an error message: 'The underlying task reported failure on exit'. I tried verify, then repair permissions, both stated "No valid packages". So I then started up with install disk and Disk Utility ran repair successfully - but verify or repair from the CD still gave 'No valid packages' Can anyone tell me what this means and what I should do?
The machine still seems to start and run OK. My 60Mb disk has about 8.5 Mb free. Is this insufficient and has this affected anything.
Thanks for your potential contributions all you experts out there.

The machine still seems to start and run OK. My 60Mb disk has about 8.5 Mb free. Is this insufficient and has this affected anything.
I assume you mean GB, not MB. 8.5GB is kind of getting down there for Tiger and could have contributed to this, especially if the disk has been in use for a long time with large files and files may have become highly fragmented.
If Disk Utility won't repair a volume you have two options.
One is to copy off what files you can (bearing in mind that your directory has errors so it may not 100% know where all the bits and pieces are to all the files). Then erase the drive, reinstall the operating system, copy files back on.
Another is to buy a utility such as Diskwarrior and let it rebuild the directory. This will be a lot faster, but will, of course, cost about $100 for the software. Other software packages (TechToolPro, Drive Genius, etc.) may be able to do the same. DW is a one trick application but is probably the best at what it does.
Many say keep 15% of your drive free at all times for OSX to have room to run. With a 60GB HD that's only 9GB (which is why I don't like that "15%" recommendation since on a 2TB drive that would be 300GB which is ridiculously large). I check my virtual memory use in Activity Monitor and see that for my computer this is usually 6GB. I figure maybe 3x that is good for wiggle room and try to leave 18GB free at all times.

  • Permissions Repair Not Repairing the Permissions that it Claims

I have a server that went down, and I successfully archived everything [necessary] on the System partition using "sudo cp -R". I copied this over to a different HDD, and used the migration assistant to restore data during installation. This effectively copied everything that I needed to recover from this server.
Understandibly, I had lots of permissions errors, and attempted to repair them using Disk Utility while booted in the OS. This fixed most permission errors, but when I verified again, it pulled up more errors. Repaired permissions again, and again but Disk Utility still claimed that the same files needed to be repaired. I booted to my install drive and tried repairing permissions through Disk Utility multiple times, but it still pulls up the same errors.
Most of these errors are that the 'd' flag is missing at the beginning of the file mode for files matching:  /System/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/LockScreen.app/Contents /Resources/*.lproj/MainMenu.nib
Other errors are .nib files in the ARDAgent.app, but there are fewer numbers of these.
I assume it's pretty bad if a file is supposed to be a directory but isn't, so what can I do about this? We use Remote Desktop quite a bit, so any deviation in the way it works can be pretty prohibitive.
    Thanks in advance

The structure of some packages changed in an update. Unless you have an actual problem running Apple Remote Desktop, ignore those messages.
Running the repair permissions function repeatedly won't change or fix anything.

  • AD Group Permissions do not work

    SP 2k10 on Windows Server 2k8 R2.
My site and everything is functional only to Site Collection administrators or individual AD users that I add directly to the site permissions.
    For instance;
Scenario #1: test.user is a member of the Domain Users AD group. I created a SharePoint group called Portal Readers and give it read access to the entire Site Collection. I then add the Domain Users AD group to the Portal Readers SharePoint Group. Test.User
gets Access Denied to the portal page. If I check permissions in the site permissions it says test.user has none.
Scenario #2: If I remove the Domain Users AD group from the Portal Readers SharePoint group then add just the test.user AD account to the Portal Readers SharePoint Group everything works fine. I check the permissions in the site permissions and it says test.user
has read from the Portal Readers group. I thought maybe this was a token cache issue so I took everything out, came back the next day and reconfigured Scenario #1 then let the server run all weekend. I come back in on Monday and I have the same symptomology.
I don’t have any health issues in Central Admin nor any Red events in the event viewer. This is a pretty generic SharePoint install, nothing special the same way I’ve done it many times before without issue.
    What am I missing?

    Hi signalwarrant,
Whether you are using Claims authentication.
The claims based token is refreshed every 10 hours and hence if you make any changes to Active directory group memberships it won't reflect immediately in the token. you need to run the following powershell command to adjust the token life time to a smaller
    value.
    $sts = Get-SPSecurityTokenServiceConfig
    $sts.WindowsTokenLifetime = (New-TimeSpan –minutes 60)
    $sts.FormsTokenLifetime = (New-TimeSpan -minutes 60)
    $sts.Update()
    IISRESET

  • Toshiba Satellite C50 Startup Repair not working

Right, first off I am not very technologically savvy so apologies if I sound like I've no idea what I'm talking about because, really I don't.
My Toshiba Satellite C50 froze last night and I had no other option but to hold the power button down to turn it off. When it switched back on again it froze at the start screen as Windows was opening.  Alas, I had no other option but to press the power button down again, this time taking me to the Startup repair screen.  Now I've ran this about 10 times and it keeps running forever, not solving any repair issues at all.  Every time I try to start Windows normally it freezes at the same Windows is loading screen.
Also I cannot find the recovery disk that came with the laptop and have tried F8 but every option seems to take me to the Startup repair screen again which isn't solving anything.
    Please help!

There won't be a physical disc, no manufacturer's provide those nowadays. You can access the hard drive's recovery partition, which provides similar functionality, by holding the zero key while booting up, form there you can restore to the out of the box state. That will wipe all data on the drive, but if the hardware is still functional that should resolve the issue.

  • Start up repair not working [Urgent]

I turned on my laptop and it started a update, it stuck at 9% and then I turned it my laptop off then back on. A windows error recovery came up saying I could either do a Start up repair or just a normal boot. Both options eventually load up a grey screen (Like the blue one with flowers-But just grey) and I can just move my mouse.
I want to avoid clearing all data as I have important things which took weeks to build. A reset to a previous update wouldn't be too bad, however not too far in the past (Few days Max.)
I also have windows 7 and a HP envy.
    -Kind Regards, Jacob.

    Jacob.
Try booting in safe mode with command prompt.
    If you can type.
    chkdsk c:/f
C: should be your boot partition.
    Let us know.
