Persistent Desktop/Trash bug

When copying files to my desktop, somtimes the icons don't appear.
Also, when emptying trash, the icons are still there.
The only solution I have found is to use Tinker Took to relaunch the Finder. Or restart, which is a bit drastic.
I've deleted the appropriate preferences files, but that does not appear to solve the problem as it's not a one-off.
I'm using an Intel MacBook running Tiger 10.4.10. I've not experienced this problem on my other Mac, or on my previous PPC Macs. This is my first Intel, so I don't know whether it's to do with the Intel version of the Operating System or not, and as I've only had this computer for a month, I cannot say whether this problem is due to any updates to the OS.
It's a very annoying bug. Is there any way I can report it to Apple?T he bug reporting page I have found is only for developers, and I'm not a developer.

It could be an issue with your icons, the trash or both. Let's go on the assumption it is the icons first. If it's icons resetting the LaunchServices database may help.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line:
Code:
<pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister \-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my IMac desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

Since you didn't mention what type of error message you were seeing, I'm going to guess on what is happening.
I'm guessing that since you threw away Time Machine backups, that Time Machine is probably active on your Mac. There is a chance then that the files you tossed are marked as in use. You can't delete files that are in use.
Try turning Time Machine off, then restart your Mac. Then try deleting them again.
Once done, turn Time Machine back on.

  • Odd desktop/display bug - how to reset user display settings?

    Greetings all,
I woke up yesterday morning to a puzzling problem with my G5. I logged in and started working - and I needed to use the windows remote desktop client to shell into a machine at work. I noticed that the fonts looked sort of funny (randomly quished) so I logged out and then back in. Then I noticed that the problem was not in the RDC display, but in the display of my mac.
This is sort of hard to describe w/out actually seeing it, but here goes...
When I move my mouse across the desktop (or what ever apps I have open) and the mouse pointer moves across and invisible (yet perceptible) line on my screen real estate, my background, icons, parts of displayed apps and fonts "shift". This causes fonts in the affected are to get messed up and causes general display irritation. That's the best way I can describe it, it's sort of a "you have to see it" problem. I will also note that this problem did not arise after an update or a software install or weird crash. Just another day.
So first I tried messing with my display settings (change resolution, color profiles, setting the background to a solid color, turning off screen saver). Rebooting. Nothing. Still there.
So next I log into another account (the root account). Ah ha! No display problems! Tried creating another user-level account. No problems there either. Now we're getting somewhere - it's something that is effecting my main user account and not a problem with my monitor, video card or OS. That's good.
    So since then I've tried:
    - Grooming the disc that my home directory lives on with DiskWarrior.
    - Repaired permissions.
    - Deleting the contents of home/Library/Fonts in case it's some funky font rendering issue causing this.
    - Deleted the contents of home/Library/Preferences/MicroSoft to get any of its potential badness out of my life.
    - Scanning with FontDoctor looking for bad fonts.
    - Deleted my desktop and finder plist files.
    - General maintenance and cache cleaning (including the MS font cache) with Onyx.
    - Booting to Safe Mode.
Nothing. The display problem persists afflicting that one user account. All other accounts (root, and a second user-level account residing on the same disc) are free of these problems even though they are all using the same display settings (monitor, resolution, color profiles, etc). And as already noted, this problem was not "brought on" by anything like an update, installation, preferences modification or fatal seeming crash of an app.
So, my question to all you good people is: what am I missing, what might be causing this and what else can be scrubbed from that account (cache, plist files, etc etc) that might be harboring and causing this display bug? I would really rather solve this problem than go through the very very arduous task of moving all of my stuff to another account (an option, but a very unattractive one).
I was not a mac user during the OS 9 days, but I remember my co-workers doing the "rebuilding the desktop" dance. I realize that this is no longer an issue, but I guess I'm looking for something like that. I need to remove any and everything from my user account that has anything to do with display and font rendering since it's obviously some setting lurking in that account causing the issue.
I googled and searched the forums for this yesterday but could not come up with anything like it and all of the maintenance tasks I tried have not worked.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Monte
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi.
What kind of G5 do you have? An iMac or a PowerMac?
    A PowerMac.
If you own a PowerMac, you'd better take a look (o
try with another one) at the DVI cable connecting the
    display.
I did check my connections, but also, why would a faulty DVI cable only cause problems with a single user account and none of the others?
If you want to reset the display settings, start in
Safe Mode, and trash these files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.a
    pple.windowserver.some_number.plist
If I were at home now, I would try and report back. But I'm not. I'll definitely give it a try as soon as I can. Thanks for the pointer!
    Cheers,

  • Has the "quit mail to empty trash" bug been resolved in Lion?

This long-standing bug seems to persist in Lion.
I haven't tested the old work-around which was to securely empty the trash.
Any ideas on whether this will be resolved?

Wow. Never heard of that one. Nor have I ever experienced it.  This suggests something peculiar to your set-up is causing it.
Why do you believe it is widespread?

  • Icon / Desktop arrangement bug

    Hi folks,
I'm not new to OSX and do know the desktop icons arrangement feature. Nevertheless, no matter how I choose to set the desktop arrangement preferences, Snow Leopard keeps arranging all my icons to the left once every few restarts. We have 3 active MacBook Pro's at the moment, and all have the same issue. Latest OS for on all of them. Bug has carried over since las few updates.
Any ideas as to why this cumbersome issue persists?
    Cheers!

One of my clients are having this problem as well. It's very frustrating.
Have you checked this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12933121&#12933121
(I'll try to delete the desktop preference file next time I'm at their office)

  • A trash bug

    Hello!!
The problem : Putting something simply in the trash is just can't be possible anymore. I only receive an invite telling me "Are you sure you want to erase this thing?" No come to the trash only erasing instantly!!!
How: I have this strange bug after the 10.6.2 update.
I remember I previously had this bug one time in 2003 when I installed the soft BATCHMOD. It could help you change the authorization of folder so taht you could trash whatever you wanted. I'm not saying it's all fault of 10.6.2 but I don't see what soft can bring all that mess???
I started on my 10.6 DVD this morning to repair the authorizations but clearly it didn't change a thing.
At the beginning when made the 10.6.2 update I said to myself, It's something new in the FINDER so I started to check anywhere if I could change this setting..
Any help would be much appreciated

If following KT's suggestion doesn't work, then:
    1. Repair permissions and disk, the first from your desktop and the second using your install DVD.
    2. Try [resetting your PRAM/NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US]. If everything isn't fixed, then follow the [steps here including resetting your SMC if necessary|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806].
    3. Reinstall 10.6 using you Sno install DVD by installing Sno over Sno using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to install the updates, .6.1 and .6.2. But, if you do, then use the combo updater again.

  • Trash Bug?

Is anyone having the problem, where if you drag a file to the trash, it doesn't show the icon as full, but still empty. Also when I right click the trash icon the empty trash button, so I have to go into trash to empty it and it is annoying. Does anoyone know how to fix this or has the similar problem?
    Thanks

I assume Apple is aware of the issue as I submitted a bug report to them and recieved an email indicating the bug had already been reported.

  • Sun VDI 3.1-EA: "Microsoft Remote Desktop" Provider -- Bug?

It seems there is a bug in VDI 3.1:
After having added a VirtualBox desktop provider I also wanted to add a Windows 2003 terminal server as desktop provider, so I go ...
    - Desktop Providers
    - Windows Remote Desktop
    - New ...
    - Step 1 ... Next
    - Specify New Host
... And now it asks me for this information:
    Host:
    SSL Port: 443
    User Name:
    Password:
SSL Port? For a Windows 2003 server?
I am confused ... So I want to check the "Help" tab. The "Help" tab links to this URL:
    https://localhost:1801/vda/faces/jsp/providers/tswizard/NewTSProviderWizard.jsp#
So guessing from that URL ( ... "NewTSProviderWizard" ...) I'd expect to find information regarding Windows TS servers?
But the help text reads ".... Enter the hostname or IP address, and administrator credentials for the *+VirtualBox+* host server ... "
VirtualBox? I wanted to get help with Windows 2003 TS.
So I'd assume that this is a bug?
    - the "Add Microsoft Remote Desktop" wizard will get you the one for VirtualBox
    - Help text is talking about VirtualBox too
I assume that this will be fixed before the final release?
    Regards,
    DJ.

What specifically does your customer object to ?The server being +"touched"+. That's already enough for them. I'm ashamed to admit this ... but I too was a Windows admin once. I was young, stupid and I needed the money. ;-)
So having been a Windows admin once myself ages ago in my dark past I can fully understand them. One stupid patch, one stupid incompatible product, one silly addon someone somewhere wrote ... and that server dies in a nice ugly "Bluescreen of Death". Or so they think. Because a typical Windows admin spends 90% of their daily job running from one dying Windows server to another dying Windows server the last thing they want is yet another server that is bound to die because one of us unworthy Penguin worshippers dared to install something on it ....
So NOT having to install anything on that server like with SSGD is perceived as being OK.
Having to install ANYTHING on that server for which the admin doesn't understand the reasons within 1 second simply is a NO GO for them.
+"Why doy ou want to install this BS? My RDP connections work tip top without that thing you want to install ... take your hands off my server ... "+
So ... How do I explain to a very very stressed and hyper-nervous Windows server administrator that I need to install some SSL stuff on his precious Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 installation when SSGD (also from Sun last time I checked ...) didn't need that? And none of his other RDP applications need that?
How do you explain something like that? YOU CAN'T. The discussion is over even before it can begin. And if their Windows administrators are screaming like mad and panicking that you are about to hose their precious Windows systems then soon enough even their managers (who up to that second were on your side) demand an explanation ... "Why does VDI require that when SSGD didn't require that??"
In the end it's easier for me to configure an Windows RDP application via SSGD and deliver it that way to the VDI sessions than argue with the customer and their nervous admins about why in the world I now have to touch their servers with this stuff ...
See what I mean? Yes, I know: I exagerated slightly. Just to give you a feeling of the troubles us people in the frontlines are facing.
SERIOUSLY:* The RDP-Provider in VDI 3.1 is in need of being re-evaluated and re-designed. Like it or not: But it simply is not going to fly the way it is now. Most Windows admins simply don't want any additional stuff installed on their servers. PERIOD. Because only the Gods know what other things such stuff will break one day ...
So the RDP provider in VDI 3.1 should look and feel and act exactly like the one in SSGD. If you want to offer RDP-over-SSL: fine, offer it as an option for the lucky few who don't have to argue with their customer about that.
RIght now it's easier for me to create a Linux VM that auto-boots into a pre-configured "rdesktop" session and then deliver that as a login option to users than to argue with the Windows admins why their precious servers need to be touched ... So yes, I'd say this part of the Sun VDI 3.1 product is in need of a re-design.

You can provide bug or feedback information in several ways with Apple. For generic feedback you can use this:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
To comment on a product defect (a bug), the best way is to get an ADC membership to become part of Apple's developer community. You don't need to actually be a software developer to join ADC, and the online membership is free. See this information:

  • Have you encountered this Lion\Logic desktop switching bug yet?

This is on 1.7.1, still a bug but different than what happened on 1.7
Let's say I have 3 desktops and open Logic in desktop 3 then full screen enable it. If you now initiate mission control, you will see 3 desktops AND the full screen Logic). Now let's say I swipe to desktop 3, Logic will now be visible with the menu bar on top of Logic (still in full screen mode). Swipe to desktop 2 and Logic is not visible. Swipe back to desktop 3 and Logic is visible with the menu bar on top of Logic (still in full screen mode). Swipe back to desktop 2 and Logic is visible with the menu bar on top of Logic (still in full screen mode).Swipe to desktop 1 and Logic is visible with the menu bar on top of Logic (still in full screen mode). Swipe all the way to where the full screen app should be (to the right of desktop 3) and all you see is a grey screen (in 1.7 it would be the linen background). Now you have to swipe back all the way to desktop 2 to see Logic. Guess what? Swipe to desktop 2 and Logic is visible.
    You get the point.
This does not seem to happen with the native apps in full screen mode.

facing the same epic fail issues since i bought my mac pro with Lion preinstalled and downloaded (ARGH!) Logic Pro 9 ... using an apogee rosetta as i/o and wordclock via optical .. never a problem with a G5 and Tiger... lion and logic f*** up everything (workflow?! what exactly was that?)  ... constant digi-clicks tell me that the apogee clock ist ignored, logic produces a klick with constant dropouts only and no way to sync audio to the click or whatever .....
worst is: they (e.g. apple) keeps us from downgrading to Snow Leopard, no help, no support, no responsibility ...

  • Desktop-based bug tracking software

I have seen some out there that cost something, but if anyone
here can recommend one based on actual experience, or know of an
open-source free solution, please let me know. This is for tracking
information from an ongoing dev project for which I am the only
developer. I am also in a corporate setting, with no ability to
setup a server on my machine or the network, so I am cannot use a
    multi-user web-based solution.
    Thank you!

Either way you look at it, you will have a slight learning
curve to any software that you chose. You will need to do some
configuration for the setup and spend a little time reading up on
it. I do not know from my experience any software that you can just
install and be "good to go" as bug tracking software that I have
seen whether it be OS such as Bugzilla (
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugzilla)
or COTS such as IBM ClearQuest.
Here is an excellent listing of available software from Wiki.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_issue_tracking_systems#Bug_tracking_systems
Note you will need to install supporting software such as for
Bugzilla, you will need to install Tomcat and MySQL. The nice thing
is that all the software that you need to support Bugzilla tracking
software is that all of it is open source and wont cost you a
    penny.

If you happen to uninstall the BlackBerry Desktop Software, it will also delete any preinstalled BlackBerry Device Software.
So install the Desktop Software, then the device software. Now does it work?

  • Desktop v7 bug -- duplicate extraneous calendar entries

Am one of those who happened to be available when the V7 desktop software rolled out. After much effort got most things back to normal -- except calendar loads. Deleted all BB entries using desktop software and did a one way calendar load to BB (3k entries) Sync program is creating extraneous entries for my birthdays -- all day events download from outlook creates on entry on the correct day and one on the next day

    Hi,
I've experienced a similar problem. My solution was to downgrade back to DTM 6. Back to sanity now, but not sure what is lost by not using the current release of the desktop software? Guess maybe no support for latest handset (9900 etc) with new release of software? Bonus is that it does not take all day to start the initial sync and future syncs are reasonably fast, unlike the new DTM 7.
I'm using Windows 7, Outlook 2010, DTM 6 syncing via cable to BB 9800 Torch on OS6.0. All appears ok and I only have one instance of each all day event and it appears also to talk to my Playbook.
    Good luck.

  • Windows 7 x64 Pro, desktop GUI fails to display correctly, or crashes, when High RAM load, and even after. HW changed, same issue. Please Help.

    Hi Guys,
I have have this horror issue with my PC. I have even changed the hardware configuration and the problem still persists. My PC fails to display the desktop correctly after using highly RAM intensive applications, especially Chrome, but even after getting
the chance to close it, or waiting for it to crash by itself, the PC is still not able to display correctly the GUI, even on other browser/applications as shown in the screenshots.
    1st Hardware Config:
    Intel Core2Quad Q9450
    4x2GB DDR2
    MSI P43 motherboard
    Ati Radeon x550 video card
Software used, that seemed important for me to mention:
    NOD32 v4.2
    Comodo Firewall 5.12
    Chrome
    Screenshot Captor
    SpeedFan
    Other mentions:
Aero is disabled, because I've considered that it's one of the causes.
So, I've considered that it's a RAM issue or a videocard issue, and I've upgraded to:
    Intel Core i7 3770k
    4x8GB DDR3
    Asus P8Z77V-LX motherboard
Intel GPU integrated in the 3770k CPU
The problem just happened 2 times on this rig also, and the RAM was not even coming close to  it's maximum capacity of 31.7GB. It was at ~20GB's.
Also, this is another videocard(Intel's integrated GPU), so we can exclude the videocard from the suspects.
    My suspects:
    1) some desktop manager bugs, or other similar issue
    2)  video memory allocation - I'm still suspecting that it can be caused by the amount of RAM dedicated to the videocard, currently, I think  that it is at 256MB.
    3) some poorly designed components of Chrome/Screenshot Captor - still very questionable since there are enough resources on this system, so there should be no fight over resources. And when the system is barely used there are no issues.
    4) Adobe Shockwave Flash - maybe this one????
I have attached a set of 20 screenshots here, these were taken on the 1st configuration of my PC, using Q9450:
    http://imgur.com/a/Mc8hI#4
Notice how it distorts the image by duplicating it and showing it in a smaller space, or how does it displays those black rectangles. In those moments, the PC is fully functional(the apps are running the background), without being slowish or something, but
you can hardly control it like that. For example, I've tried to remove the mouse from the USB, and then I've insterted it back, the image was not displayed correctly, but the mouse was recognised instantly and the pointer was controlable.
Same thing still happens on the new configuration. Please advise me.
LE: OS is Windows 7 x64 SP1 Professional and it's Geniune. There is no cracked software on this PC. No games. I've tried to maintain it as clean as possible.

    Hi,
First, please be ensured that you have installed the latest drivers and all the updates.
Then check whether this issue will not in
Safe Mode. If it didn’t occurred, I suggest you narrow down the cause in
    Clean Boot mode.
In addition, try to create a new profile to see how it works.
    Hope this helps.
