Phantom iPod (broken alias?)

I have a 3rd Generation iPod that doesn't show up in Finder or in iTunes. When I open Disk Utility, my iPod shows there, but is greyed out. I'm not sure why this is happening, but I may have a guess:
I was using it to listen to music at school (I'm a teacher), and I changed the permissions (using "Get Info") so that my students couldn't access it from the finder. (I keep school work, newsletters, and reports on it.)
Now, no matter which computer I'm using, I can't access my iPod to change the permissions back. Also, since it's not showing in iTunes, I can't play it from my computer at school anymore.
One more thing: When I search for it in finder, I get a hit, but there is no iPod icon. When I double click it, I get some message about a broken alias and do I want to fix alias?
Any advice?
Thanks,
Rob

  • Can I safely use the Finder's "Get Info" feature to choose "Select a New Original" or "Delete the Alias" to take care of one broken alias that's inside my iPhoto '08 Originals folder?

This alias is not in the Modified or Data folder.  I've read warnings to never change anything in iPhoto through Finder, yet the Finder options look helpful.  However, if they are certain to cause trouble, what other method will get rid of this alias? By the way, this alias is likely the result of changing to a Referenced library a while back (once I found out that was a bad idea I switched back to Managed and purged the problem photos caused by this)  Thanks so much for your help.

What system version and iPhoto versions are you running?  If old enough you may be able to use AliasHerder | Rorohiko Workflow Resources to repair the broken alias files in the library (that is if the source files are available).

  • Broken Alias in Time Machine?

I'm trying to restore a file that was backed up last August via Time Machine.   The file is a Pages document and indicates such when I find it in TM.  However when I go to restore it it won't restore.   If I double click on the file it just shows a blank document.   I also tried to restore it by going directly in with Finder into the Time Capsle drive.   Finder indicates it's a broken alias.   Any ideas on what's going on?   I noticed a large number of my older back-up files have the same characteristic, not just this one file.   However there are some files that look just fine.   I've done a Repair using Disk Utility on the Time Capsule and it came back with "no problems".   Anyone have an idea of what's going on and how to fix?

Did you Repair Permissions and Repair Drive using Disk Utility on the Time Machine drive?
If all this fails, if you have a drive that is large enough you can do a Time Machine restore to that drive. Boot from the drive then do a search for the original files.

  • Broken alias on networked hard drive

I have a hard drive connected to my Airport extreme that I've divided into 2 drives. 1 for home backups and 1 for work backups.  I've got a broken alias for the home drive (the one I'm trying to backup) and can't seem to fix it.
How do I fix this broken alias?

What kind of files are they?
    Do you have these installed?

  • Using Reference Mode and checking for broken alias links

I use iPhoto 09 in reference mode (where it doesn't import the pictures into the library). I'm aware of the pitfalls of doing this but, long story-short, it's better for my needs this way. I just wanted to know if there's a way to tell iPhoto to check for missing photos or broken alias links. It seems to just pop-up randomly some time after moving or deleting anything and I'd rather take care of business when it's convenient for me not for iPhoto. I don't move my pictures very often but when I do I want to be able to re-link them immediately and not wait for iPhoto to randomly ask me and then I don't know what album or date the picture is from that its asking me about. Thanks in advance!

I thought you were aware of the pitfalls of running a Referenced Library One of which is that if you move the files iPhoto will lose track of them.
Unfortunately, iPhoto has no mechanism for checking the integrity of the links - another reason I would not use iPhoto in Referenced Mode.
You could try use an app like [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com> to check and repair broken aliases. However, if you continue to manage your files without reference to iPhoto then you will continue to have problems.

  • Unreported broken alias link

    RoboHelp HTML 2002
We deleted 3 context sensitive HIDD topics from our project.
The alias file still shows the links from the .hm file to the
    help topics.
When we run the broken links report, these 3 topics do not
show up as broken links, even though there are no topics.
Usually the Broken Links report catches these, and we un-link
the topics in the alias file.
The topics are really deleted from the project, and they
don't show up when I look at the project topic folder in Windows
Explorer. I don't see any baggage file link that keeps the topics
    somehow connected to the project.
Any ideas about why these broken alias links do not show up
as broken in the broken links report?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Pressing sleep button has a wide variety of random effects, is my ipod broken?

I have the relatively new iPod Nano 9th Generation, and I have had it for nearly a year. Everytime I am done selecting a song, I put my iPod to sleep by clicking the sleep button so it continues to play the song, but doesn't waste as much energy on illuminating the screen and such. I do this often, and now the button is becoming more increasingly difficult to press and less technologically responsive. When I press the sleep button now, it either pauses the song, skips the song, reads the songs title, does nothing, just funtions properly, etc. I feel it may have something to do with the jack of my headphones, because when I am not physically contacting the headphone jack (I usually use it as sort of an extender to make it easier to hold on such a small mp3 player), it normally is a little more responsive. I would attempt to use another pair of headphones, but I do not have any left, and do not wish to invest in more if this iPod is nearing its breaking point.
So, the big question. Is my iPod broken?

It also effects other buttons aswell, such as the increase and decrease volume. They still have the same effect as the sleep button however. All on screen buttons work just fine, it is just the physical buttons. I have recently tried different headphones and the same thing happens so it isn't the jack I don't believe, and there is no easy was to test without headphones altogether because there are no internal speakers to tell me whether it pauses, or reads the song information with siri's voice, or skips to the next song, etc..
If you were unaware, this is the type of iPod I own. It is roughly 2 inches by 2 inches and the jack is plugged into the bottom right of the iPod while the buttons are placed on the top.
From left to right, the buttons order is: Decrease Volume, Increase Volume, Sleep Button.

Will Apple fix my iPods broken screen?

    No. See the following:
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5s. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • UK complaint or help line needed. 3 ipods broken out of 3.

Does anyone have a UK telephone number (that someone will answer) so I can complain about 2 ipods that I have purchased. A "help line" would be even better but I doubt if they have such a thing. I am so far disgusted about the lack of customer service. I have purchased 2 ipods. One stopped working some time ago so we got a replacement. Now the replacement has also stopped working. (That is 3 rubbish ipods out of 3). My daughter threw her ipod in the bin today she was so fed up with it. It felt good!!! If you have a UK phone number or email address please let me know. I have been through the Apple web site and had no success so I thought I would try this complaints site. Looking at the thousands of complaints on this site I can see that I am not on my own!

Thanks for your help. I called the help line and sure enough the helpful assistant I got through to a young lady in Greece (her English was about as bad line as the line but never mind). We had along chat and went through all the different things that could have been the problem but eventually she admitted the ipod was broken. She gave me a web site to go on so to send it back to Crapple (sorry I mean Apple). THIS IS TO REPLACE MY REPLACEMENT IPOD THAT HAD ALREADY BROKE. I followed the instructions and at the end the web site said because it was 1 year and 2 week since I purchased the ipod I had to pay £130!!!! Now bare in mind that I had I purchased it for my son for Christmas last year and it went wrong shortly afterwards – broke for about 2 –3 weeks before I got through to Apple and then I send it back and they had it for at least 6 weeks and then it broke again before getting to this stage I thing they are take the p**s. I isn't me - my daughter had an ipod and it uploaded fine on the same computer. Although with hers as soon as the ipod is taken out of the charger the battery goes off- she kept her ipod in her bedroom before we had the burning ceremony at the weekend.

  • All new iPods broken (?)

    hey everybody,
my old, 3rd gen iPod broke a while ago, so I got a new 60GB 5th gen to fill the gaping hole in my heart ... :P
anyway, i got it engraved, so it came straight from the factory in China, complete with the latest software etc. first of all, it was USB, which i think is stupid, because i don't have USB 2, but w/e. then, i found out it was pre-formatted in FAT32 (WINDOWZ eww). after reformatting it with the ipod update, i attempted to load my music onto it. however, iTunes kept on spitting this error message out, "cannot read or write to disk" every 100 songs or so.
i returned it, and got another one.
this time, it was the right format, but it had the same problem.
i returned it and got another one.
    same problem.
i returned it and got another one.
THE SAME PROBLEM!!! AAARGHHHH! needless to say I am pretty p**d off at apple right now ...
well, I looked at this article, and narrowed the possible problems to these things:
    1. broken HD in iPod
    2. bad cable
    3. bad USB chip
I don't have a PCI slot on my PowerBook and I don't know if i can swap the chip, the cable looks fine, and I hope that apple hasn't lowered its standards to the point that i got 4 bad hard drives in a row.
I am trying to load 9,000 songs to my iPod in a single session, could that be a problem?
sorry, this is a monstrosity of a post, but I need this fixed by the end of the week, i am leaving to europe for the summer.
    cheers,

Since your powerbook doesn't have USB 2.0, and never will, you are stuck using USB 1.1 for syncing.
While USB 1.1 has a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 12Mb per second, you will really only get about half that.
I'm ballparking the size of your library to be about 30-35GB, maybe larger.
It would take hours to transfer that entire library at once.
What may be happening is your powerbook is going into sleep mode, or standby mode during the transfer which is causing the USB sync to get interrupted.
I don't think the problem is the USB ports, cables or the iPods themselves. I think this is simply the result of trying to transfer too much data at once over a very slow link.

  • By Request . . . Can't connect to PC, get Broken Alias

Those of you that have been following this, I just found something very easy that I thought just might work and that was to delete any retained passwords in the Keychain for the machine I'm trying to connect to. Well all it got me was the login window for that PC, but every time I log in I get the Alias error.
    Next . . . .

Nope, no networked drives. The file that was in the trash was created on that partition in the previous install and I just didn't empty the trash prior to the installs.
I have a whole collection of older Macs and I tell ya as long as they work, they WORK! I have to run a $25K scanner off a Beige G3 running OS9 because the manufacturer refused to do an OSX version of their software. No big deal because I have yet to see software that can do what this does, so it's worth it. My ad agency is still running OS9 because most all of the designers have OSX at home and collectively agreed that if they had to run OSX, they'd be spending most of their time fixing or dealing with problems than getting work done. I love my employees. And I have NO Networking problems. Remote access is great, we move files all over and don't even blink. I'm still trying to figure out a safe way to let a vendor access my OSX machine with a PC to drop files without having access to my whole machine. Why can't PC's get the Public folders like Mac guests do and as easily?!
Since the delays of Leopard and the media blitz of Vista I got embarrassingly interested. Until I started to read the fine print and got a test copy. Interest over.
I was one of the first and most used people at a temp agency in the lated 80's, early 90's that when I had the choice at a clients of a Mac or PC, I would always choose the Mac because I could get the work done quicker and easier. A large aerospace firm that I eventually worked for full time publication department was all Mac and now it's PC. It's starting to become a toss up. I spend as much time dinking and repairing with this, as proclaimed by an Apple Rep outside my Apple Store the night OSX was first released "maintenance free OS", more that I ever have OS9. Even when it was really broken.
But as with 10.3.9, I swear that 10.4.9 was fouled with to get us to flee to 10.5. But the timing of 10.4.9 and the initial release of 10.5 would have worked. But since 10.4.9 was release and 10.5 delayed, we have to suffer through until 10.5 is released and if it works. I have played with the latest releases of 10.5 and it's not pretty. Makes perfect sense why it was delayed and I have been saying that since last Fall.
But I do have to make my living from a Mac and since 10.4.5 things have been slowly going wonky. I have strange and stupid things happening in every application, especially Adobe products. And this having to reset prefs and the lot after each restart and all the kernel panics since 10.4.9 is getting old quick. Screens, I have 3 main and one 35" TV as monitors that I can no longer color calibrate. Two of them have the blue tint that I read a lot about a while ago. I am now doing a lot of testing for the developers of many of the apps and widgets that I use, since I was the first to discover maladies and need these. There is a lot failing out there, and it's only really started to be a problem since about 10.4.5 and getting worse with each release. And of course there will be few if no updates for these apps, since I pray that they are gearing up for 10.5. Look at Adobe, they openly admitted that they were waiting on 10.5. So we had to wait and suffer. But until a couple of months of CS3 on the street will have to pass before I even think of it. After the problems with CS2.
I am totally disgusted with my current cell company and am no longer bound to a contract. I was chomping at the thought of the iPhone last Fall, now if I do it'll be Gen 2 at Christmas, if not a Gen 3 later on after all this garp I'm going through now and hearing about the over advertised iPhone and it's surfacing shortcomings. Apple is rushing way too much to the market way too quick and I will not be a bigger "unpaid" Beta Tester for Apple than we all already are.

  • When I transferred the info from an old ipod, broken, to a new one the contacts I received were from all over the place, many whom I did not even know.  Can I only restore from the last sync or can I go back further to get my old contacts?

I recently had to replace my ipod touch.  The old one had a broken button and would not change the screen correctly.  Apple gave me a new ipod and told me all I needed to do was update the new ipod from the itunes which I had backed up prior to getting the new one.  When I did the sync , the info for my contacts was giving me names and addresses from all over the place except the itunes.  Can I retrieve info from a previous sync or only to the last sync that was made?

Yes I did.  When installing the new ipod it had to update the software, then it sync'ed the information onto the new ipod.  The contacts were not the original ones, and all the phone numbers have dissappeared.  Is there any way to recover them?

  • Phantom iPod

iTunes now shows me a corrupted iPod every time I open the application, but there is no iPod connected to the computer. I've uninstalled all the USB devices, no other application can detect this iPod. iTunes will not recognize any iPods plugged into the computer and simply freezes if I try to eject or restore the phantom/nonexistent iPod.
    What's the fix?

I'm having a similar problem. When I plug my nano into my work PC, it shows up in iTunes as a 10 gig ipod, and has a different name. If I look up the ipod in My Computer and Computer Management (under Administrative Tools), it shows the correct name and size.
The strange thing is it worked fine on this computer until yesterday. Haven't installed anything or made any changes to the pod lately, so not sure what caused the problem. Plus, it works just fine on my home computer.
    Any comments / suggestions?
