Photo booth: recovering photos from hard drive

I have recently decided to try to recover some "very" old photos from photobooth that I had placed in the trash, AND emptied from the bin. I have no clue how to use time machine and I never have. So, how do I recover these photos from beyond the grave? Or are these files doomed to wander amongst the stars?

Assuming you made a TimeMachine drive before your accidental deletion and it backed up/updated, then there should be no problem restoring.
But something tells me you didn't .
If you didn't then your looking at data recovery using a external boot drive and $100 Data Rescue software if your internal boot drive is a hard drive. Don't think the deleted data can be as easily recovered off a SSD if you replaced yours in your 2010 model (came with hard drives)
If the boot hard drive isn't Filevaulted, you didn't use Secure Empty Trash, Disk Utility > Erase Free Space or wrote a lot of items to the drive or used the machine very little since the accidental deletion occurred, then there is a very good chance the files may be recoverable provided Data Rescue can recognize the iPhoto file format and reconstruct them again off the 1's and 0's off the drive.
The software has to be installed on a external boot drive while the computer is booted from it to minimize the chance of overwriting the deleted data. Another Mac with FireWire Target Disk Mode can also be used with Data Rescue on it.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
If I'm talking geek speak and not making any sense, then stop using the computer and take it to a local PC/Mac tech which for a fee will image your entire boot drive (deleted files and all) to a external drive which you then can use Data Rescue yourself (for better privacy) or they will do the entire attempted recovery themselves.

  • IPhoto 08 - Loosing photos, iPhoto automatically deletes from hard drive!

    Hi,
    I am using iPhoto 08 v 7.1.5 on Max OS X 10.6.4
We are 2 users sharing the same iPhoto library and after ongoing issues with permissions I have moved the iPhoto library (as per Apple's instructions) to a Sparse Disk Image on the Shared folder and changed the permissions for all to rear&write - then copied the library to this Disk Image and pointed all iPhoto libraries there.
Worked well until we started to import photos from a camera. From my profile it imported the photos, but then when copying them to the library come up with an error 'File is corrupt'. I started iPhoto in shift&option mode and repaired permissions. This fixed it and I could import.
The other user imported photos yesterday from their profile. No errors on import and the photos were property loaded into the library. I did check the library AND the files in the Finder - all was well. 2 hours later, ALL FILES HAD GONE!!! There were no trace of the files. Not in the trash (iPhoto or System) - I searched the whole drive, GONE!!!
I am a bit freaked, if iPhoto is going to delete files permanently from the drive its NOT good. The photos were already deleted from the camera so they are gone for good.
Has anyone experienced the same or got an explanation??
    Appreciate any help with this!
    Cheers
    Chris

I've seen this mentioned on here a couple of times. Tracing it with these other users what seems to occur is that iPhoto imports the photos to the database but fails to copy the actual files into the Originals folder.
I'm not sure why this happens.
If you haven't used the camera since you can recover the files from the card with an app like MediaRecover

  • New computer- photos dont show up from hard drive

    Hi,
I got a new computer and when I opened iphoto with my hard drive connected, it says the pictures are there, but they don't show up. I have a screen full of exclamtion points.
    Help?

    dislatecoya:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That "!" indicates that iPhoto has lost the path to the original file, i.e. a damaged database file in the library. Run the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Lightroom 5:  "Remove Photo" will not delete from hard drive

I just discovered that when I am using the "Remove photo" feature from the library, while the photo is removed from the catalog and "deleted", it remains on my external hard drive.  Is there a fix to this issue?  I did go to my external drive and create a file and then delete it.  I had read in other forums that this allowed Lightroom to find the correct place. This did not solve my problem.
    Thank you for any assistance.
    Karen

    Yes I do.
After I posted, I tried it again in a different file (I organize my photos
on my external drive by month and year).  In the month of August file, I
can delete in Lightroom and it deletes from my hard drive.  It appears to
only be happening in my September file, at least as far as I can tell now.
I created all of my file folders 2 months ago, so it isn't something I
    just did.
    Any thoughts?

  • Satellite L40: How do I recover files from Hard Drive

    Hi
Can anyone help me please. About one week ago I started experiencing a clicking sound coming from my Satellite L40 laptop. My laptop froze and when I restarted it, I was directed to the system setup with a message at the bottom saying
"Pri Master Hard Drive Disk SMART status bad, Backup and replace.
    Press F2 to presume."
    I have pressed F2 but I haven't a clue what to do?
Can anyone tell me how to backup my files before my hard drive has completly gone or if it has gone can I use another device to get them off.
I have tried to use the recovery disk but the disk is not responding??
    Please help
    Pete

    Hi
This messages looks like an warning notification from the S.M.A.R.T.
It does mean that your HDD will eventually fail.
It could happen next days or it may not happen for a few months but the SMART capability has detected that the drive is going bad so it should be replaced as soon as possible.
It looks like your notebook is not very old so the warranty should cover all replacements.
I see only one way to access and backup the data. Possibly you could buy an external USB SATA HDD enclosure and could connect the HDD to another computer.
Im not sure if you will be able to access the HDD due to the malfunction but if you want you could try this.
    Good luck

  • How to recover data from hard drive?

All my data was saved in an external hard drive and it got deleted, don't know how. Is there a data recovery program that you recommend me?

Try using one of those listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • How to recover data from hard drive of failed notebook

I have a broken F767NR laptop. Broke due to something other than the hard drive. What is the best method to extract the data from the notebook hard drive inside the laptop since the laptop won't turn on? Anyone with any specifics would be helpful!

Something like this would work.   Pull out your hard drive and put it in the enclosure.  Hook it up to a working computer and you should be able to see all your folders and files.

  • Recovering data from hard drive

I have a satellite A205 and I need to run the recovery disk and reinstall the operating system because I get an error message every time I try to start the computer.  Since I can't get the computer started, is there an easy way to access the hard drive with another computer to get the data that I don't want erased?  Or is this a job I should take to a professional?

If you are capable of removing the hard drive, you can use an external enclosure or cable adapter to connect the drive to another computer and copy the data.

  • MacbookPro - recovering files from hard drive before formatting ?

I have recently had a problem where my MBP won't start up. It gets as far as the Apple sign and has a loading circle but doesn't get any further. I have inserted my OS disc, gone into utilities. My disc is verified and has no errors, but still doesn't start up, the next thing i wanted to do was archive and install but it requires 1 gig more than i have to do this !! I am now wondering whether I can get my music and photos off there and then reformat ? or what i should do next ?

Do you have access to another Apple machine? If so, get a firewire cable and try mounting your damaged HD machine in firewire target mode on the other machine (ie. connect the damaged machine to a good one via the firewire cable, boot the good machine, and then boot the damaged machine while holding the "T" key down). You may be able to see the target drive and drag your music and pictures folder to another drive.

  • Recovery from hard drive

I was instructed to reset my notebook to repair fingerprint device.
Thought I had backup of data on external hard drive, but not.
Computer illiterate, but wanted to know if it is possible to recover data from hard drive?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please check professional services in your area, normally they charge few hundred dollars depending on recovery rates but never get 100%. There are few tools such as:
        http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-formatted-partition.htm
You may want to try yourself.
    Good luck.

  • Permanently Deleting Photos from Hard Drive

Hi, I recently upgraded to a macbook pro from a macbook. I backed up all of my photos to an external hard drive from the macbook, then moved the entire library to the trash then emptied the trash. I just ran a program called "Disk Inventory X" to find out why my hard drive was still almost full and it turns out that the deleted photos are still on the hard drive in pictures/iphotolibrary/originals/ then their folders (which I can see in the "disc inventory X" program), however I cannot see the files in Finder to delete them. How can I proceed to delete them (there's about 100 gigs)?
Is there another way to open Iphoto Library to erase the files without opening iphoto because the photos are not visibel there?

In Disk Inventory X, when something is selected, just do File > Reveal in Finder or its shortcut on the menu Command-F. That will reveal the folder in the Finder.
Also, in the grid of squares, right-click something and Reveal in Finder is on the context menu.
If the photos are stil listed in iPhoto, select one and do File > Reveal in Finder > Original file. This will show you where on disk any iPhoto photo is.
Note that if you can still see these original photos in iPhoto, it is best to delete them from iPhoto and then empty trash in iPhoto. If you delete photos in the Finder, behind iPhoto's back, you can really screw up your iPhoto library as it loses track of the files it thought were there. You really do not want to go there...

  • HELP moving photo's from hard drive with aperture to hard drive with iphoto

I was trying to move the photo's from hard drive a with aperture to hard drive b and start using iphoto but I have had no luck. In aperture when I select relocate masters a error comes up and say's: unavailable master images cannot be relocated. Either offline or not found. I originally had the masters on a external hard drive, when I got divorced my ex took the external drive for her mac. I am able to view the photos but I don't know how to move them. Thanks

I think you're missing the point - it's a question of where the images are, and it sounds a lot like the images are on the hard disk you used to own.
Managed = you keep the images in the Aperture library
Referenced = the images stay where they are on the hard disk and they're indexed in the library.

  • How hard is it to set up Elements/CS5 to access photo's off of portable hard drive so I can free up

I have down loaded approximately 4000 files to an external 1 terabite portable drive ( Western Digital, My Passport ) from my laptop to free up space. I would like to access the photo's for editing in both elements 11 and CS5, and Lightyear 3. I have not deleted the originals off of my laptop yet until I know it will work, or more correctly, how to make it work. When I connected the portable drive to the laptop afterwards, the downloader wanted to download the 4000+ photo's back on to my laptop. Specs- ASUS N53S, 8 mb Ram, Core i7, Windows 7, about 116 GB harddrive. Can anyone help me with the steps needed to make this work so that I can take the photo's of my laptops hard drive but still have easy access to them with the portable drive ? Thanks, Mike

Normally you can plug in the external drive and then simply drag and drop folders after clicking on the yellow pins in the Organizer left hand panel. You don’t say if you are using Organizer.
The complication is that if you are also using Lightroom 3 with the same image files, that will corrupt the file paths in the Lightroom Library. It would be easier if you are not using Organizer and restrict your file management to LR with CS5 and the PSE11 Editor set up as your external editing applications.
The safest method is probably to first select the 4000 images in LR3 and save XMP/Metadata to the files. Then move the images to My Passport and re-import into LR3. If that works satisfactorily you can delete the original folders from LR and click the button - Delete also from Disk.

  • My photos are stored on ext. hard drive, and now I can't see them

I recently moved all of my photos over to an external hard drive, and have been quite happy with the freed up space on my ibook. I have been able to view them flawlessly until a few nights ago. Our power went out, and then came back on (yes, I know I should have a battery back up), so of course the ext. harddrive turned off with unmounting, and since then, I cannot view my photos in iphoto. There is still the correct picture count registering, however in place of all of my photo thumbnails in IPhoto, now I am only seeing grey boxes in the same shapes as the thumbnails. I have tried everything, including unmounting the ext. hard drive. I am at my wits end and have been working too much to go into the genius bar.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jerrod

    Hi Jerrod,
A couple of things for you to try:
-Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and choose to open another library. Navigate to the one on the external and choose it.
    -Delete your iPhoto Preference file
    Preference file
    -rebuild your library
    Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
    Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.
iPhoto 4 or later: Rebuilding the iPhoto Library
-Navigate through the iPhoto Library folder and make sure your images are still there and open when double clicked.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
Please get back with the steps you tried and the results.
If none of these suggestions work, you can create a new library and import from the old.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
    Lori
