Photo cache on iPhone

is it possible that the pictures I have stores in the iCloud are cached on my phone somehow? Because I don't have that many pictures in my camera roll but it looks like the memory on my phone is taken up by mostly pictures. If that's the case, how can I decrease the amount of space that cache takes up?

Mine seems to have gone wrong scince the latest software update!! Even got my son who is I.T. person and he can't sort it out either.

  • Why does iTunes use an iPod Photo Cache at all?

    Hi,
When iTunes is used to synchronize photos to a device, it creates an "iPod Photo Cache" folder.  Why does this folder even exist?
For users that have multiple devices with multiple resolutions (e.g., iPad 3rd Generation, iPad Mini, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3G), the iPod Photo Cache is grow to approximately four times the original size of the photo.  If I have 15 GBs of photos and a 250 GB hard drive, then the combined usage of 75 GBs (15 GB photos + 60 GB cache) is extremely unreasonble.
Device resolutions change often enough (these days) such that having multiple devices is probably more common than having more than one of a single product.  iTunes should be designed to do the real-time conversion (which it already does), but not save it to the hard drive.
Also allowing the ability to change the location of the "iPod Photo Cache" folder would help many users, but not myself since I do not have an external drive.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thank you for your response. I should have clarified. When trying to delete from the library, it gives me the option to delete them from the computer or just from the library. I choose not to delete them from the computer, just the library. As a result, I would not expect the deletions to free up room on the hard drive, but I don't see how it actually increases the space used up on the hard drive. If I delete a song from the library, but not the computer, does iTunes save the song again someplace else (such that there are now two copies of the song somewhere on the system)? That seems to be the only explanation for why the free space on my hard drive would decrease after deleting a song from the library.

  • I want to print photo's from my I3. They appear to be saved in photo cache but they wont open. Only way seems to be to e-mail to myself, any help?

I can't print photos taken from my phone. After syncing they appear in a photo cache but wont open and the software from my printer can't do it either. Also tried searching and having Iphone plugged in whilst printing and the printer also can not find the phone to download.

Photos taken with iphone are NOT part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

  • Purpose of folder "Ipod Photo Cache"?

What is the purpose of this folder? Should it be deleted automatically by iTunes after syncing? I've seen several posts here suggesting to delete the folder to try to resolve photo syncing issues. A co-worker tells me that this folder on his machine contains 2GB of .ithmb files. That seems to be a lot of space used unnecessarily.
    Thanks,
    Jack

No, it isn't/shouldn't be automatically deleted. When photos are synced to an iPhone (or iPod), iTunes creates an 'optimized' version of the picture (all the files are of uniform disk size and pixel resolution) and those are stored in the iPod Photo Cache. You can recover that space if you need to, especially if you put a lot of photos on the device that you later removed (by unchecking those albums, for example). If you delete the cache, iTunes will re-create the optimized versions at the next sync (for all the pics on the device).

@DaVBMan, as to why it's large, regardless of their original size, 'optimized' pics take up the same amount of space in the cache, for a given device.
Note that this means if you sync the same photo to an iPhone and an iPod Classic, there will be two copies of that photo in the cache, totaling ~1.6 MB for that one pic, +even if the original pic is a 1 megapixel jpg that's only 150 KB in iPhoto.+

    Thanks for your reply
    I solved my problem,
Definitely a bug in syncing through itunes.
    - Connect Iphone with MacBook Pro through USB
    - Go to iphone on itunes, photos, deselect photo synchronization.
    - Sync (all pics will be removed from iphone)
    - Close itunes, iphoto, disconnect iphone
    - Select in finder: (home)-pictures-iphoto library.
    - Sec click on iphoto library and choose "show package contents"
    - Delete iPod Photo Cache
    - Close finder
    - Empty trash
    - Reconnect iphone
    - Allow photo synchronization again and everything works smooth.
After this, changes made in iphoto are instantaneously reflected in iphone photos.
Once every hundred photos, one gets detached from iphoto and then changes are no longer reflected (buggy) :-(
In this case I erase the photo in iphoto, sync, go back to iphoto trash, reestablish the photo from the trash and sync again.
Hope this improves. Still have to try cloud though.
    Thanks

  • I just updated iPhoto, now iTunes won't sync my photos with my iPhone.

Earlier today I was able to sync photos just fine.
Then I updated iPhoto via the Mac App Store.
I connected my iPhone and got this error message from iTunes:
iTunes could not locate a supported photo application. Would you like to change your photo syncing options?
After I updated iPhoto and opened it, I had to upgrade my library. Could this be the problem? What do I do now? Apple Software Update doesn't show a newer version of iTunes available.
    iTunes 10.6.3, iPhoto 9.3, OS X 10.7.4

That can sometimes indicate a photo cache issue. If you remove the current ipod photo cache, does that get you past the error?

  • Only some photos syncing from iPhone '09 to iPhone 3GS now

To troubleshoot, I only checked boxed a single album of about 250 photos to sync to iPhone.  When I do the sync only some photos within the album sync - some but not all.  Same with other photos albums too.  Does not matter if album is regular or "smart".  Never has this issue before now.  Lack of free space on iPhone is not the issue.
Rebuilt the iPhoto library by holding Command + Alt at launch and tried most of the options.  No luck.  Then tried all six check boxes in iPhoto.
    I'm using...
    OS X Lion 10.7.1
    iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.3.5
    iPhoto '09 (8.1.2)
    iTunes 10.4.1
I must be missing something basic (I hope).  Anyone know what's going on here?

    Try here:

Usually deleting the iPod Photo Cache Folder works. Note that if you sync via the folder method, make sure you dlete all the ifolders since :
The iPod Photo Cache stores the photos that are optimized for display on your iPod, iPad, or iPhone. The location of this folder depends on the syncing options you select. In iTunes, if you change the selection in the “Sync Photos From” pop-up menu, a new iPod Photo Cache folder will be created (and the previous folder will remain).

  • Every time I sync my iPhone with iPhoto I end up getting duplicate photos on my iPhone. The other problem is that I can not delete the dups on my iPhone.   Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

Mike whether I create a folder within the Pictures Folder that iTunes uses to sync photographs or just copy them into the main folder the result is the same, I end up with Photo Library plus another album containing an identical set of pictures as contained in Photo Library.
The User Manual for iOS5 states ...
You can create, rename, and delete albums on iPhone to help you organize your photos and videos.
Create a album: When viewing albums, tap Edit, then tap Add. Select photos to add to the new album, then tap Done. Note: Albums created on iPhone aren’t synced back to your computer.
Rename an album Tap Edit, then select an album.
Rearrange albums Tap Edit, then drag up or down.
Delete an album Tap Edit, then tap the delete sign.
Yes I can Add a new Album, but cannot delete an album already created. The delete sign does not appear.
In iTunes the only folder that I can see listed is the man one into which iTunes stores pictures, which I have named iPhone Photos.
When I look on my PC this iPhone Photos folder contains another folder named iPod Photo Cache and a multitude of folders created by iTunes, the named F00, F01,F02 etc etc. and a Photo Database file.
Now whether I create a seperate folder within iPhone Photos to store my favourite photos in, or just copy them all into the iPhone Photos folder without being encased within another folder, or create a folder inside the iPod Photo Cache folder the result is the same ...
I end up with Photo Library plus another album containing an identical set of pictures as contained in Photo Library.
I am going around in ever decreasing circles here and getting nowhere fast!!

  • How do I transfer photos from my iPhone to iPhoto?

I have a MAC desktop and have always transfered my photos from my iPhone to iPhoto with no problem. After several weeks of not transfering photos, I sat down to do so today. However, iPhoto does not show my iPhone in the "devices" menu as it usually did. I waited for quite some time assuming maybe I had too many pictures ... but it never showed up. I disconnected and tried two more times, each time with no success. I have not changed any of my settings and my phone was unlocked prior to being connected to the desktop. Any other suggestions?

  • Unable to sync all photos to iPad/iPhone

I'm trying to sync some photos but iTunes keeps telling me that selected photos cannot be copied to either my iPad or my iPhone. These photos display fine in iPhoto, and some of them were taken on the iPhone and then effects added with apps afterwards. The pop up gives me no more information as to why they cannot be copied. • TS1314 how do i open my ipod photo cache

please help how can i open my ipod photo cache when i sync my iphone4 a file appear on my library picture but i can't open it

I'm not sure if you are asking about the iPhone side of the synching, but in MacOS 10.7.x you can reveal the iPod Photo Cache like this:
Your iPod Photo Cache is stored in a folder inside your Aperture Library Package. To view the iPod Photo Cache in the Finder select your Aperture Library, ctrl-click it, press "Show Package Contents"  from the opo-up menu. This will open a Finder Window with the folders inside the package, and one of these is  the iPod Photo Cache and you can browse it from the Finder. If you need access to this folder from a file chooser dialogue, drag this folder to the Finder sidebar for easy access.
