Photo Info Pixel Size vs. Size of Photo Stored in Library in iPhoto 5.0?

Bear with me as I'm a new iPhoto user (also new Mac user)--but I've noticed the following. I take digital photos at 5MB and up. When I import these photos into iPhoto 5.0 and then check the "Info" on them, they display the correct number of pixels (approximating 5MB)--but the size of the file stored is only 1.0 to 1.7 MB (??) Does the Mac do an automatic compression of some kind purely for storage purposes? If so, when I archive these photos to CD/DVD, is the compressed version stored or the full file? If compressed, when does the Mac uncompress the file? Can I control this compression process (disable it, whatever)?? Appreciate anyone's help in clarifying. Thanks!

Brad,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I believe your camera takes digital photos at 5 MP (megapixels), not MB (megabytes). If the pixel info is correct, and when you multiply width by height you get about 5 million, then everything is fine. When I set my camera to the least amount of compression my 7.1 megapixel images range in size from 2.6 MB to 3.2 MB. Previously when I used slightly more compression in the camera, my images were sized from 1.4 MB to 2.5 MB. I think your numbers sound reasonable. Check your camera settings to see that you are using the "finest" compression setting it offers.
iPhoto does not compress your photos. One of its core philosophies is to preserve the image in the same condition as when you imported it.
How you archive your photos depends on how you wish to use the archive. If you want to preserve the iPhoto metadata, then use Share> Burn from inside iPhoto to save a version that can be read by iPhoto. If all you want archived is a list of image files, to be used on any computer, (no iPhoto metadata) then you select your pictures and Export to a desktop folder, which you then burn in the Finder. You will have options in the export dialog; you can have the full-sized images or downsize them during the export process.

  • Unimported photos found in Library when iPhoto is launched

    Hiya,
I get this alert every time I open Iphoto *"A photo has been found in the iPhoto Library folder that was not imported. Would you like to import it?"* Wether I say yes or no to importing it can't find any missing photos. I found a thread saying delete the recovered photos folder it creates in Iphoto, but it still does it. I have only had Iphoto 2 weeks and only imported to it once from my photo folder on my backup drive. I'm running version 8.1.2,
    thank you for any advice.

quit iPhoto and go to the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder) and right click on it - select show package contents and find the folder named import (or importing) and drag it to the desktop - MAKE no other changes to the contents of the iPhoto library - close the iPhoto library and launch iPhoto - you will be fine - open the import(ing) folder an if there are any photos in it that you need to import do so and then trash the import(ing) folder

  • ITunes syncing lower-res versions of photos from Aperture library VS iphoto?

Today I changed my iPad's photo syncing prefs so that it would sync photos from my Aperture library as opposed to iPhoto. To my dismay I've discovered that it appears to be syncing REALLY low-resolution versions of the images compared to what it was syncing in iPhoto. Most of my shots are 21MP, and I understand that when they are synced to an iOS device, they're resized/compressed, but when I was syncing from iPhoto, I was typically able to zoom in to 2x zoom and things would still look good, whereas now that I'm syncing with Aperture, the exact same images appear to have been synced at a lower resolution than the iPad's screen!
This is NOT an issue with offline images or missing masters either.
What gives? This seems to be incredibly backwards as I imagine the majority of Aperture users would want larger versions synced, and iPhoto users wouldn't care as much. How do I resolve this? Can I?

Aha. Well I guess that solves it -- I do have my preview settings super low-res.
That's a really strange/questionable design decision. This means I'm actually better off using iPhoto or manually syncing with folders (I have good reasons for using low-res previews).
    Thanks!

  • My mac won't download photos from my iPhone to iPhoto.

It stopped a couple months ago. When iPhoto starts up it says "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." I hit the "repair" button, which lets me use iphoto, but then when I connect my iphone and try to import photos it says:
iPhoto cannot import your photos to this library because iPhoto cannot access the library. Please repair your iphoto permissions."
I have followed all the prompts, and all my permissions are read/write so it is not this.
    HELP!
    Thanks in advance.
    Sally.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Sharing photo's in aperture en iphoto

I have all my photo's in Iphoto. Now I want to use Aperture, but my wife still wants to use Iphoto.
Does anybody know if there is a way to use the same photo directory and library using Iphoto as well as Aperture? I don't want to duplicate all my photo's on my harddisk.

I just ran into the same problem. I was going to switch to Aperture completely until iPhoto went from 5 to 6. It has a lot of the new features that Aperture has but there are still some awesome features in Aperture that I can't live without. One thing Aperture is missing is that it doesn't check for duplicates when importing pics. So what I decided to do is use iPhoto as my importer (whether from a camera or folder), and then use Aperture's import menu to import the rolls or pictures I want. If you haven't tried it out yet, do so. It is really awesome since it lets you select the rolls as they are saved in iPhoto and gives you a preview of each picture.

  • Black & White Photos to not appear in iPhoto

I added several black & white photos into the library of iPhoto along with many color photos, but none of the black & white show.
Each of the B & W have a black place holder but it is totally black. If I click a photo, it displays as a ghost image lacking detail.
I originally edited these photo scans in Photoshop and saved them as a jpeg image without layers.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

I had same problem. I scanned and saved as greyscale, imported and then they show up as black in preview, etc. Is there any way to change the photos that I have already scanned and saved without having to scan all of them again under the new profile?

  • Can't Print Photos Stored in Iphoto

I have three pages of my credit report (why I put them in iphoto I don't know) and I try to print the pages but instead a page prints out that says at the bottom 'Unable to Assemble Book' with Print underneath. I am trying to print the credit report pages from Events under Library and keep getting the 'Unable to Assemble Book' when I print the page out. Do I have to move the credit report pages somewhere else to be able to print them? And how do I do that if thats the answer.
    Thanks for your help!

Since the window opens to the Desktop that means that the original file is missing or iPhoto has lost the file path to it? What do you see if you try to edit that file in iPhoto? Do you get a window with this in it:
If you do then make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How can I hide photos in my library?

How can you hide photos in the library in iphoto 4.0.3 ?
    Please help,
    David

One way you can (unsecurely) hide your photos is to put iPhoto into View by FilmRoll. Simply close any rolls containing photos you don't want seen though this will put all photos in those rolls out of sight. This doesn't block anyone from opening those rolls but it keeps them out of sight as people scroll thru (under supervision).
Another way is to simply trash all pictures you don't want seen since most people don't bother looking in the trash. You can pull them out later unless you make (or allow) the big mistake of emptying the trash before undeleting them. Make a backup.
Perhaps the best option is to go to iPhoto preferences and turn on sharing. You can then choose which albums to share with other accounts on the same computer. Log into a different account (create one if necessary) when you want to let someone browse your library. From that other account they will only be able to see the albums you have approved for sharing

  • Reducing pixel size of saved photos

I'm very new to my iMac. I've saved several dozen photos in iPhoto and just tried to upload one of them to a boating website. It was apparently too 'big' in that it had too many pixels. My question: How do I copy a photo in a reduced pixel 'size' so I can upload it to a website with a pixel limit? Thx,
    Tony

You would probably have to crop the photo to the correct ratio first
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165597
After the photo is cropped, then you would follow the directions above to export it.
Put the length and height in pixels in the appropriate boxes and export to the desktop.
If you need more help then give more info on the exact size of the photo you need exported.

  • Help reducing pixel size on i photo.

    Hi
Desperate for help. I need to rezize to 675x550 to upload to a website. I do my crop and then export.I enter the above values and proceed. However when I check the photo info in the library the size is 675x450. This happens all the time. How can I acheive 675x550
    Cheers Paul

    Paul:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What you want to do is export the file to the desktop using the File->Export->File Export menu. In the export window select Format = JPEG and Size=Custom. There will be a sub window where you can put in the maximum pixel dimension for the photo and the other side will be resized accordingly while keeping the size ratio intact. Set the other options as needed and finish the export.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How do I find the pixel size of a photo?

I have taken a photo or found one online.
    It's now on my ipad.
How do I tell the pixel resoution of the photo via the ipad?
I have two of the same photos on my device at the moment and want to delete one.  They may both be 2048/2048, but without emailing them or putting them in Dropbox, and viewing on my laptop, I don't see how to tell.

Get the Actual Pixels App from the App Store. It's free and will tell you the pixel size of any photo you open.

  • How do I change the pixel size of my photos?

    Hello,
Please give me step by step instructions on how to change the pixel size of my photos from the time I log in.
    Thank you.

    There are basically two ways.
Image>Image Size... This will adjust the quality of the image, allowing you to adjust the pixel dimensions and keep the full image.
In the tool bar on left side of screen 5th icon down looks like a sliding picture frame. That is the crop tool, that will adjust the pixel size of a document by removing a portion of the image, allowing you to get rid of portions of the image you do not want.
There are some other ways to accomplish the above, but these are the basics that everyone needs to know. I recommend playing with these tools on a copy of an image, that way you won't be afraid of destroying an image.

  • Is there a way to reduce the pixel size of multiple photos in a slideshow?

I have a Windows 7 computer and use Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9.  I recently completed a slideshow that contains about 360 photos, many or all of which exceed the maximum size of 1000 x 750 pixels.  Is there any way that I can easily reduce the pixel size of each of the photos?  If upgrading to the most recent versions of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements would help me accomplish this I would be willing to do this.  Thanks very much in advance for any advice or suggestions.

You can batch process your images to re-size them in the editor using the menu:
    File >> Process Multiple Files
Place your chosen photos in a separate folder and then choose a separate destination folder; so as not to overwrite the originals.

  • Pixels size of photos

I recently bought an iMac and the Genius guys transferred everything over from my PC. I emailed a couple of photos of my house to my real estate agent and she said they arrived as 640 x 480. I am certain that they were taken with a 7 megapixel camera and appeared with very high resolution on my PC.
Now my first problem is that when I click the little i on a photo I get no information on the pixel size and I believe it should be there. For starters can someone tell me how to get the pixel size?

When you click on the Mail icon you should get a window that allows you select the size option:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Burt there is a further place you need to set the size: in the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
