Photo To Movie - A solution to Jaggy edges to a moving still?  (Ken Burns)

Hello Hello
I know folks have talked about this before ......
I recently received a tip about 'Photo to Movie', and how it improves those Jaggy images (the outer parameter of a photo), that can be seen in both Quicktime (on your computer screen), AND from a burned DVD on your TV.
Well I have to admit that 'Photo to Movie' definitely helps remove the Jaggies.
BUT
Is is just me - or is it true that there is less quality in those panned and zoomed images as compared to iMovie? It certainly looks so to me ...... perhaps less detail .... on the TV screen
Ya know when iMovie HD came out, I immediately saw an improvement in the resolution of burned movies onto a DVD on the TV.
I've read the other posts about the Jaggy problem in Pans and Zooms including these solutions:
Workaround #1 is to turn ON the Ken Burns Effect before importing an image.
(I always do that)
Workaround #2 is to convert still images to good quality video with Photo To Movie. Photo To Movie and Still Life have more features than iMovie's built-in Ken Burns effect. Photo To Movie's High Quality setting renders still images into very good quality video that doesn't flicker when viewed on a TV.
(I just bought Photo to Movie - it works)
But again is there a trade off in perhaps less detail in the images?
Thanx

When you look at movies, or frames of movies, in iMovie, you're looking at the entire frame. So if you import photos into iMovie, and don't use any panning or zooming, you'll see the entire photo ..but - as Karsten and Matthew say - at a reduced quality than the original photo(s), because movie resolution is lower than photo resolution.
To create a zoom out or pan effect across a picture, you obviously have to start with a smaller area of the picture than the area of the full photo. You then travel across the photo, still using a smaller area than the full photo, or you zoom out until you're looking at the entire photo.
If you start with a smaller section that the full photo, then if the photo has only a little higher resolution than video (..say it's a 3 megapixel photo..) then that smaller section has to be automatically enlarged to fill the entire video frame, so the apparent resolution of that smaller area of the entire picture will probably appear to be less sharp than the overall, entire photo.
It's like examining a newspaper photo with a magnifying glass: you'll start to see the detail of the dots which comprise the photo, instead of seeing the overall photo as a whole.
The higher the resolution of the original photo - e.g; 8 or 10 megapixels - the less will seem to be the quality loss as you pan or zoom across a small region of it.
But if you start with a 2, 3 or perhaps 5 megapixel photo, then - depending on how far you zoom "into" it - you may well see a poorer quality image in the panned or zoomed sections than you would see on the overall image.
..As in the film "Blow-Up" ..the more you magnify something, the less clear it can become ..unless maybe you're using an electron microscope..

  • Photos get auto-cropped and ken burns. stop it.

Trying to do a stop motion. don't need the photos to movie. Cant get imovie to stop auto cropping and ken burns-ing the photos on import from iphoto. Would be fine, but i can't bulk adjust them either, tired of going through frame by frame and putting it back to fit. help.

When you start a new project, or to change a project you are currently working on, go to FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES, and you can change the default behaviour for initial photo placement from Ken Burns to either FIT or CROP. Crop will make the photo fit the frame exactly by cropping off the top abd bottom. FIT will make the entire photo fit by letterboxing.
If you make your photos have the same aspect ratio as your project (either 16:9 or 4:3), then FIT and CROP produce the same result, and nothing is lost from the photo.
The FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES will only change photos that you add going forward.
To change a bunch of photos that are already there, change one photo using the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool. Then, with the photo still selected, EDIT/COPY.
Now, select all the photos you want to change by holding down the Command Key as you click, so you can select multiple photos.
    Now, click EDIT/PASTE ADJUSTMENTS.../CROP ADJUSTMENTS.

  • Cant open pages/I photo/I movie/Keynotes and Numbers anymore

    Dear All
After cleaning my mac with the program clean my mac (http://macpaw.com/), I cant open pages/I photo/  I movie/Keynotes and Numbers anymore. The icons are still in the bar below, but with a with a crossed circle.
I took my macbook (Mac Os 10.6.8) to the apple store and they recommended me to reinstall MacOSX again (which I did). Afterwards i reinstalled application and I life.
With the the small success that I can open the system prefernces again but not the other programs mentioned above.
    Any tips?
    Thanks a lot!
    best regards

Thanks for the info. I will add one item to my blacklist.
    I would backup my datas,
    wipe out the HD
    reinstall on the clean HD
    restore my datas
and after that, everything would behave flawlessly.
Oops, I forgot to say : before wiping the HD, check that you have the iWork registration code available somewhere if you **** bought an iWork license (not a Dvd).

  • IMovie Crashing when importing photo with Ken Burns Effect

iMovie is crashing all the time when I am trying to import a photo with Ken burns effect using media browser and hitting "apply". Is this a known problem ? If I dont apply Ken Buruns effect then it imports it fine.
I am trying to put Photo at the begining of my project ( and then put title on that photo). If I have any clip in the begining and then try importing photo with ken burn's effect then it is not crashing, but it still does not import it. I click "apply" and it does soemthing , I can see the clip in timeline for a sec and then it disappears. So either way, cant use any photos anywhere with Ken Burn's effect. Whats going on?
I have more than enough space available on my HDD and I do not think there is any conflicting QT plugins I have ( It's all default Install). This is so consistent that it seems like a Bug but can't find this exact case mentioned anywhere in discussions.

Welcome to the forum! And thanks for such an insightful post.
    I have two guesses here:
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with partitions
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with access rights
I've never seen a Ken Burns problem with partitions (I've used multiple partitions for years with no problems). I suspect that's not the cause.
But I think you've hit the nail on the head that iMovie may have a problem with permissions/access rights. I don't know exactly what the problem is — or whether it's caused by iMovie or OSX — but there is behavior that suggests something isn't right.
I suspect the issue, whatever it is, causes a failure to save the rendered Ken Burns clip inside the project package. The red bar runs, but the rendered clip isn't saved to disk. My guess is OSX refuses to allow iMovie to save the file for OSX doesn't believe YOU have permission.
One would think that using the Finder to set the permissions of the project package would solve the problem, but it doesn't seem to.
    There are two possible solutions:
    1. Set the partition to ignore permissions. In the Finder, click on the partition and Get Info. Turn ON the checkbox "Ignore permissions on this volume";
    2. Use Disk Utility to reformat (erase) the partition. Somehow that seems to fix the problem.
Here's some history which may suggest another solution: In an earlier version of iMovie a similar problem occurred, where iMovie would refuse to open a project. It had somehow decided you didn't have permission to edit the project.
The only solution was to use the Finder to create a new set of project folders — a folder and all the folders it normally contains — then Option-drag the FILES of the original project folder to the appropriate folders. (Option-dragging COPIED the files instead of moving them.) The new project folder would now open normally.
If you are adept at working with packages, you might try creating your own package (which contains all the normal folders) then Option-drag the files of the problem project to your package.
Once I saw an error -52 announcement, but it was not reproducible.
Error -52 is a "Get file position error", which (may) suggest a disk directory error. That may be a disk issue unrelated to iMovie. You might want to consider using Disk Utility to Verify/Repair that partition.
I have a separate partition for the movies and made a
link from my home account to the directory with the
movies on that partition. iMovie works correctly
except for the Ken Burns photo rendering.
I'm never sure whether creating such a link is a good idea or not, especially for the iLife apps. Some apps don't resolve the alias as they should, which creates other problems. A "Movies" alias sends iDVD a million miles beyond Jupiter, for example, where the iDVD project joins the space dust.
For iMovie projects saved on partitions and external drives, I just save them inside a "iMovie 6 Projects" folder on that drive. (Every new version of iMovie gets a new folder.) For convenience, I may create aliases to help navigate there, but do nothing else. Everything just works.
If you figure out something new, please say.

    Hi
What file type is Your photos eg .tiff, .pict or .jpg ?
What size are they eg 1Mb, 10Mb or 100Mb ?
How much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disc ?
Ps When ready - Don't use Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie. Just drop Your movie icon
(with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
OR - Your movie project in iMovie will be harmed and You'll have to re-do it ! ! AND
the DVD disc will be severely pixelated - extreme low quality Ds

  • Ken Burns photos ~ pan photos with interest at top and bottom?

Hello ~ anyone know how to manage a "long skinny" photo without showing it in "fit" ~ with the black around the edges? I want to Ken Burns them because they are important - but stuck with the pan from the shoes to the head, or the reverse. Love the Ken Burns but it is really limited with that type of Photo. Thanks!

You can add black around the edges of vertically oriented photos with an Automator action called "Pad Images". This has the advantage of letting you batch a lot of photos at a time. You could also add the black space in an application like PhotoShop.
If you need help with Automator, [see this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10702816&#10702816]

  • Photo shows white jaggy edges

I have a document in publisher 07 with a photo of a product in it made from Photoshop CS3 saved as a PNG24. No matter how close I zoom in Publisher everything looks fine.
When I create a pdf in acrobat using standard or high quality setting there shows white jagged edges aroung the photo. I have tried saving in a multitude of ways but cannot get those stupid jaggy edges to go away.
Is it Photoshop, Acrobat, Publisher??? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

    No solution, but a hint:
    I tried with Photoshop CS3 & MS-Publisher 2003 & Acrobat 8: the transparency of the PNG-24 was perfect - no white jaggies.

  • I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. Any suggestions would be great please.

I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps. I did this initially as our school internet connection was stopping us from being able to update the IOS and our County was offering a managed system, Lightspeed, which took control of every device in school which proved very expensive.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. As we frequently use the ipads as cameras this is causing us a problem. We have a school imac that I use to keep the devices updated with Apple Configurator (not connected to our network), and this doesn't seem to offer any solution to download them either.  I was told there was a setting in Apple Configurator to allow other computers to download from supervised devices, but I can't see it anywhere.  I am very new to this so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated please.

I assume you are wanting to take the photos and movies off the iPads?
Connect the iPad to a Apple computer. Open "Image Capture". Any photos or video can me imported to the desktop or other location on your computer.
I had this same problem last year and as we have no wifi I asked lots of people at Apple what I could do - no one provided this answer (a little unbelievable!). If you have wifi using something like dropbox would be an easier solution.
    Hope this helps

  • Cant see my iTunes, Photos or Movies, but can see YouTube?

Just open the brand new Apple TV. It arrived this morning. Used all the right ID's and passwords and can see YouTube and rent films, but the home movies, photo's and music is only showing up on the MacBook Pro. The Apple TV remote seems to work fine all of it and will allow me to see everything on the Macbook pro. I've tried, rebooting, laptop and and Apple TV, resetting Apple TV, switched on, then off and back on again Home Sharing in Itunes on the Macbook pro. Why cant I see my iTunes, Photos or Movies on my TV Screen, but can see YouTube through Apple TV? I'm going crazy!!!!!

Worked out this solution. iTunes needed upgrading to 10.0.1. Did this and now it works fine.

  • Best way to export from Photo-To-Movie  to  iDVD?

I'm trying to create a playable DVD that will be shown on flat-widescreen televisions of a slide show that was made in Photo To Movie.
In exporting that slideshow, P2M gives you a lot of choices.  I've been experimenting a little and it seems that for purposes of importing the slideshow into iDVD 6, using Apple Intermediate Codec produces slightly sharper images on the playable DVD and fewer jagged forms/edges, at least when compared to H.264.
I've been exporting using the AIC at dimensions of 852 X 480 but I've NOT checked the interlaced box in the QuickTime Compressions Settings screen.
This guy here not only checks the interlace box but he exports at the HD dimensions of 1280 X 720.  http://blog.progravix.com/?p=456
Any advice?  What are your thoughts?
The objective is to use iDVD 6 to get a P2M slideshow into a playable DVD.
    Thanks!

    Hi Klaus,
This slideshow is actually going to be used as the background video to the menu of a DVD created in iDVD 6.
I infer from what you are saying that iDVD's "native format" is DV and not Apple Intermediate Codec or H.264 etc.
Now that you mention it, of course that's the case.
One can actually export directly from P2M to an "mov" file using the DV Widescreen codec.
If I've got the slideshow already edited and tweaked the way I want it in P2M, would exporting it to iMovie HD 6  as a DV result in any improvement in visual quality?
It's the visual quality at this point that I'm concerned about.  Using AIC resulted in an improvement (fewer "jaggies") than H.264.  Perhaps DV Widescreen will be even better than AIC.
Many thanks again for responding!  It's guys like you that make this forum an incredibly helpful resource.

  • Jaggy Edges: None Before Rendering - Plenty After Rendering

    hi guys.
i'm working on a stop motion project at the moment. in Sequence Settings, Compressor is set to photo-jpeg, frame size and pixel aspect ratio to HD 1440x1080, field dominance to none, video processing to "always render in RGB" and rendering quality is set to Best.
now, the problem i've been facing is that the unrendered footage looks perfect, crisp and sharp in terms of its quality. but then it acquires jaggy edges on all of the objects in the footage after rendering!
OR... sometimes the footage looks fine when paused, but has jaggy edges in motion, when i press Play.
i even tried to export the footage without rendering it, but the exported material had the same jaggy edges issue.
could anyone help me with advice, please?
the imported photos of this stop motion project are top-quality. so the resulting final product with these jaggy edges is much more than undesirable!
    thanks in advance.

Ah, but you might have made some changes in AE Preferences, perhaps.
Mind you, I only did a fast once-over in this thread, I may have missed something, so I have to ask: do you have multiprocessing turned on?
If so, turn it off and leave it off until you get more memory: you don't have nearly enough memory to use it.  Considering AE 10 can use all the memory your machine can hold, 4GB ain't nothin' anymore.  16GB is pretty darned good, and 32GB is even better.

  • Drop Saved Slideshows to Photo or Movie Section?

I have 2 saved slideshows I created in iPhoto. What is the best way to use iDVD to get both of them onto one dvd?
I have tried using Magic iDVD and dropped both slideshows into the photo section. I named the dvd, but I cannot see a way to name the two slideshows there. They just show up as Slideshow 1 and Slideshow 2. Is there a way to create names for them?
I tried dragging them into the movie section, and the dvd worked. The only problem is that some of the photos in the slideshow (particularly ones that were cropped) had dark around them, rather than filling the screen. While those were moving across the screen (or in or out using Ken Burns), the edges were shaking quite a bit, and that is very distracting.
So, let's start at the point where I have 2 Saved Slideshows in iPhoto. What is the best way to get them to iDVD, and then the best way to get them onto one dvd with the titles I want, and best quality?
    Joe

I would reccomend not to partition, there really is no need.
Format as Mac OS Extended; I don't journal but some people do.
You can certainly use the drive as your scratch disk and as storage.
I just create folders for what I need; so a folder for the scratch disk/media drive a project. I make a folder called Video and this is what I set in FCE System Settings. Captured video goes there and it creates the other folders like Render files. I also create separate folders for Music, Pics, Titles whatever else I need for the project. I keep the actual project files on the system drive where FCE lives
On the same HDD you could have other folders for things like music libraries, old project files, any other kind of media you want. Remember, you will always use all the extra space you can muster so by not partioning you are giving yourself the max amount of room possible
I work with large, multiple projects so at the is point I have drives that are strictly for storage but this just a space issue. Starting out, I had multiple folders on the same drive with no issues. Just keep track of where everything is

  • Syncing photos or movies causes power loss

    Dear All,
I have an issue with a Toshiba Portege Laptop running Windows 7 syncing with iPad 2 or iPhone 4
When I sync photos or movies to the iOS device the Laptops lose power and switch off sudenly. I mean the Laptop lose power like the battery runs out or there is no A/C power connected.  It happens with an iPad2 or iPhone 4 when the iTunes syncing has to load a greater amount of data to the iOS device.
Since it happens with either iOS device, I do believe it is a power issue with the Toshiba Laptop. The Laptop has two USB ports, but it makes no difference. It could be an issue with Windows 7 and the power scheme. The Laptop is running the 64 bit edition of Win7 and the 64bit edition of iTunes.
I was googling a bit and looked here in the forums, but couldn't find any related solution.
I'm thinking if it would make a difference to attach a USB powered hub with own A/C power.
I'm very grateful for any hint. The iPad is useless, when it doesn't sync photos or movies.
    Thank you
    Edy

Okay I have attached now an external powered (A/C Adapter) USB 2.0 hub. It didn't make any difference. The Laptops switched (lost power) during the optimation process of the photos to sync.
The Laptop is a Win7  64bit Toshiba with the 32bit iTunes. I noticed during the sync that the processes of the CPU are  100%. During photo optimation two processes are running of "ITunesphotoprocessor_32.exe*. I killed one process and the CPU usage went down and the sync with the iPad ran okay.
Question here: Why iTunes starts two process "iTunesphtoprocessor_32.exe*?
Obviously only one processor is enough.
Unfortunately when I sync movies, the Laptop lose power as well and only iTunes.exe processor is running. CPU usage is 100% again.
It's clear now that the Laptop is overheating during sync and the BIOS sends a command to switch off. It does bypass the Operating System.
I'm wondering, if iTunes 64bit would bring a change. I've read here and googled that the 64bit version has only some drivers in 64bit but not the core application.
Worth to mention here that the Tosbhiba laptops has no problem with any external hard (powered from USB port) drives copying a huge amount of data.
    Thanks

    Hi,
The download page for a lot of notebooks often has multiple entries for the same software - for both drivers and other software, just install the latest version.
When you believe that you have installed all relevant software and drivers, you can always check by opening windows Control Panel and then opening Device Manager - look for any entry here that has a warning icon ( yellow triangle ) next to it.  If you find any, right click on the problem device and select Properties.  Click the Details tab, choose Hardware Ids from the dropdown box and post back with the details shown under Value.
    Best regards,
