Photoshop CS2 glitch messed up user account?

My husband was using Photoshop last night, when the mouse suddenly stopped working (he could move it, but mouseclicks would not register). He force-quit Photoshop, but the mouse was still not working. He restarted the computer, and started to see funny behavior:
(1) The menus now display ALL commands, including those that usually only appear when a modifier key is pressed. For example, the Apple menu displays both the "Force Quit…" and the "Force Quit Finder" commands, both the "Shut Down…" and the "Shut Down" commands, and so on.
(2) Selected icons on the desktop now have a black box drawn around them.
This behavior is only happening in his account—mine seems to be behaving normally.
We are assuming that the culprit is Photoshop, since that is what he was running at the time, but really we don't know the cause.
My question is this: Can this be fixed by deleting some file in his user Library folder or something? I can create a new account for him if I have to, but I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

For what it's worth, I've often found a glitch with the cursor when using various versions of Photoshop: it 'sticks' as something (e.g. the 'drag hand' cursor) and - unlike when this happens in other apps - it cannot then be used to make clicks elsewhere. Quitting and relaunching Photoshop usually does not work, you have to either logout or even restart.

  • CS2 Problems with multiple user accounts on 1 machine

I have been having this problem since I first installed CS2 in my Mac lab. I have 8 G5's and I have loaded the exact same software (all licensed of course) on all 8 machines, in the same order. The problem occurs when trying to use CS2 in a second user account on the machines.
All software works fine for the original admin account. Then when I try to open and use in a second account I get crashes and errors, nothing consistent. AND some computers work just fine. HUH? I have called Apple and they suggested repairing permissions, that doesn't work.
I have tried uninstall and reinstall. I have tried making the second user an admin user. I have tried 2nd and 3rd users. I have tried a total system reinstall. I have tried changing the order in which I install. I have tried installing both before and after creation of the second account.
It doesn't seem to matter. On some machines it works, on others it doesn't. The only account the software will work in is the original user account.
The reason this matters is it is a student lab. I have implemented a server and students can't use the software through their server accounts either. Currently the server is a 40lb paperweight until this problem is fixed.
    Any clue?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

This has to do with permissions in the non admin accounts. A solution was posted a while back you could do a search or somebody will pop in with the solution soon.

  • Photoshop crash on Open & Save, user account related.

Something appears to have gone defunct in my user account (SL 10.6.2) that causes Photoshop CS3 to crash whenever I open or save a file.  I've tested everything, deleted preferences, etc. even reinstalled after scrubbing with Adobe's own CS3 scrubber script.  I created a second admin user account, however, and it worked flawlessly.  What causes this and how do I remedy it?  Some corrupt file or weird setting in user preferences?  Help is greatly appreciated.
    Steve

    >> I created a second admin user account, however, and it worked flawlessly
That tells me that you have corrupted Preferences in your main user account (or some weird user preference set somewhere).
If you can't find the problem it may be less painful to simply start working off your New Account (and eventually delete the problem account)...

  • Photoshop Freezing on limited access user account

I am a computer teacher and when I log in as an Admin, no problems.  When the students log in and use Photoshop, the computers will lock up for a couple minutes at a time randomly.  No real pattern to it.  I have older machines, running XP, so it would be nice to abandon CS5, but I only have a license for Photoshop 6.  I have a 5-machine license for CS2 but they won't give me a lab license for it even though we spent big money to buy a site license for CS5.
Any ideas on how to allow my students to use Photoshop CS5?  I even tried updating to CS 5.5 and no luck.
I've tried the first set of suggestions on the Adobe web site including:
    Updating Windows XP
    Updating Photoshop
    Re-creating preferences
    Update video driver

Responding to some of your other questions asked, earlier:
The OS Temp folder is set via an environmental variable that you can view in a couple different ways.  Since I’m an old-timer I use DOS commands to do it:
    Start -> ( All Programs -> ) Accessories -> Command Prompt
    C:\...> SET
From the long list of things displayed  you should see TMP and TEMP pointing to somewhere.  This is where at least some programs store their temporary data.  You might compare the SET listing for the Admin user and the Student users to see what is different.
Not having access to the C drive might cause PS to use another drive for its temporary files and if this is a USB-attached or network-attached drive things might slow down significantly.   You should monitor the PS scratch-disk-file location while PS is doing things to make sure PS is actually creating its scratch-file there, rather than some other, lower, location.  Do the students have to use a USB-flash-drive for storage?  If so, what happens to PS if you remove this to make sure PS is not using it, and/or does the access light flicker on this USB-attached device at points when the students aren’t reading or writing things to the drive, themselves, like PS or the OS is doing something with it?
You mention you cannot change the scratch disk.  Is this because there is only one internal drive and therefore only one item to choose from, or are there other locations shown but PS isn’t allowing you to choose them?
From your description of what is happening, I’d guess it is a memory problem, where at some point the OS needs to swap virtual memory and real memory and this can be very, very slow depending on how many little chunks the memory is allocated in.  XP especially seems to have a problem with this.  A way to monitor this is to go to Task Manager (right-click on your task bar and choose Task Manager) then go to the Processes tab and use View -> Select Columns… to add some memory-related columns so both Virtual and Physical memory are shown.  I don’t have access to an XP task-manager and Windows 7 does things differently so I cannot tell you exactly what the columns are called.   What you’ll likely see with Task Manager open is that at some point when the computer is very slow, the physical memory number will be counting down or up very slowly, in just a few K at a time, when there are many 100s of MB of memory allocated, and only when the PM and VM are stabilized will the system start to respond, again.  Also enable the Page Fault Delta column.  This will tell you how much the system is swapping between VM and PM every second.  The numbers might be sporadically very high in the 1000s or 10000s but if they remain very high for sustained periods, then your computers need more memory, keeping in mind that the maximum memory a 32-bit Windows system can use is about 3GB and each program will get much less than that.
It’s also possible that your students’ virtual memory settings are set completely different than the Admin settings.  You can check that in the Advanced tab of the Computer or My Computer -> right-click -> Properties -> Advanced, then Performance and  The Advanced on Windows 7, I forget how XP does it but somewhere similar.  The settings will be how big the minimum paging file is, how big the maximum is, what hard-drives the paging file is on, and whether the system can manage it or you are setting these things, explicitly.
How much memory do these computers have?  How big is the system paging file (check in the Performance tab of Task Manager) and does this change between Admin and Student users?  Are the PS settings for memory any different between the Admin and Student users?
Another thing that can cause PS to slow down is a network-connected printer connection timing out.   Do the Admin and Student users have different access to network printers?  You might try removing/deleting all network-attached printers to see if things improve.

  • Illustrator CC will only launch in new user account.

I have been having trouble with the main user account settings causing newly installed apps to crash.
I couldn't install Adobe Creative Cloud apps on the main user account… they kept crashing on launch.
With the help of Adobe Support (taking remote control of my Mac), after trying and trying to install them on my main user account, they eventually successfully installed them in a new user account with no problem. However, this is a work-around and not the best solution.
It appears that the main user account settings conflicted with the product launch. On successfully installing on the new user account they strongly suggested that that I should now contact you guys at Apple Support to check for the permissions/settings on the main user account and check if there are any certain permissions that may conflict with the Adobe Illustrator CC.
As advised, I contacted Apple Supprt and have spent several hours and did the following with their help:
    DISK UTILITY
    Verified Disk Permissions
    Repaired Disk Permissions
    Verified Disk
    ADOBE PRODUCTS
Confirmed that Acrobat XI Pro worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Dreamweaver CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that InDesign CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Bridge CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Photoshop CC worked in Admin user account
Confirmed that Illustrator CC failed in Admin user account, but worked in new user account.
Uninstalled Illustrator CC and reinstalled it through Creative Cloud CC
Removed all Illustrator 17 Preferences in both Libraries
As before Illustrator CC failed in Admin user account, but worked in new user account.
    APPLE SUPPORT SUGGESTION
I should return to you, saying, "...this would be best handled by the adobe support reps. User specific errors can occur in any application and there are things that the 3rd party vendor can look at to resolve this issue."
I'm getting batted back and forth like a tennis ball. Any solid suggestions? Has anyone been through this loop?

    Hi creatorii,
You need to make sure if you have proper permissions set on the right folders.
Please follow the steps below and let me know :
    - Go > Go To Folder. Type ~/library and you will get Preferences folder.
    - Control-click the folder and choose Get Info.
    - Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
    - Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner.
    - Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
    - Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and then click OK.
    - Click on + icon and add the Admin and all users showing.
    - Set permission for all users and admin as read/write
    - Click the Gear icon, and select Apply to Enclosed Item
Follow the same steps for the below folder too
Choose Go > Go To Folder. Type ~/library/Application support and give full permission to Adobe folder.
    Launch Illustrator and check.

  • Strange glitch involving user accounts on my machine...

Ok, this all started yesterday, I don't know if this is just some weird glitch or if it some sort of function I'm not aware of, that was suddenly activated. There is 2 user accounts on this computer, M(which is myself) and A(my mother)).My father was in my account and was trying to customize it for himself, since I no longer use this ibook. But instead of changing the name in the user settings, he clicks on HD and RENAMES the 'M' tab, as 'rudy'.
I didn't think much of it, but when he updated and restarted the computer, when he logged back into the 'M' account, EVERYTHING was reset to the default settings, as if its never been used before. All bookmarks are gone, itunes is blank, everything was seemingly gone as if another account had just been created from scratch.
It took me a while to notice that when I click on HD there is now 3 accounts now(eventhough when i log in, there is only 2). in the users tab there is a folder for 'M', 'A' and 'rudy' with 'M' being the one that is still displayed as the little home icon.
The weird thing is that when I click on the 'rudy' folder, all his original files, photos and music is all there. I can't locate any of these files in spotlight or anything, but the files are clearly IN this rudy folder and open properly, whilst the 'M' account is completely empty of any photos or music.
Its kind of like one account became two accounts, with all the information being confined to its own folder for whatever reason..
I haven't messed with anything yet, but I'm wondering if this can be fixed? is it possible to get back my original files and settings in this main account? I can easily back everything up and start anew, but there's really a lot of stuff i'd have to sort through, and i'd like to avoid that if possible.

This sounds to me like the 'Rudy' directory is your original 'M' directory. I'm guessing that when you logged on OSX requires a user's home directory to carry the same name as the account it relates to; it couldn't find the 'M' directory so it created a blank one.
I would expect that if you rename the new "M" directory to "M_Blank" or similar, then rename "Rudy" to "M". Log-out and back in again, all will be as before.
Before you do this I would like someone to confirm that the problem doesn't go any deeper. However, that's what I would do, then change the user account name in the correct way using account management.

  • Photoshop problem isolated to user account.

I am unable to open Adobe Photoshop CS2. An error displays, unrecoverable problem has occurred because something prevented the text engine from being initialized. Support helped me to isolate this problem to my user account. Now I would like to fix the problem in my user account. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot a user account isolated problem?

I had a copy of Photoshop saved on my external drive and it booted up and performed perfectly. I then read your reply and, when I went to delete the plist, I found that it had just been modified. My hard drive Photoshop now boots fine also. I'm sure that means your solution of deleting the file would have also worked.
    Thanks for your help.

  • HELP: I was told to uninstall my photoshop cs2 and now I can't reinstall it- also cannot access my adobe account and there is NO CS in the US anymore.

I was told to uninstall my photoshop cs2. My macbook pro went in for repair and I had to restore it from a backup, after which I got this error message when trying to use photoshop: licensing for this product has stopped working: restart computer and try again blah blah blah error code 150:30. I stupidily uninstalled the program at the advice of someone in adobe CS in India and now I can't get it to reinstall. Can anyone please help me? I'm not interested in purchasing a newer versioin of adobe cs photoshop or cloud or ANY of that. I'm quite happy with this one, I just want it back on my laptop. I also run this on my desktop. I also wasn't able to log into my original account due to being told I had to change my password. An email was sent to the email associated with that account but I no longer have access to that email. I'm VERY DISSAPOINTED WITH ADOBE AND THEIR LOUSY SUPPORT. We spend hundreds and this is the support we get???
I oringinalyspent around $4-500 on this program and I would like someone to tell me how to get this back up and running without licensing issues and spending thousands more please. The original CS agent I spoke with after waiting on hold for over 1/2 hour was immediately rude to me and told me I was tyring to understand something, when in actuality he was not listening to a word I told him about my issues. I'm beyond disappointed, I'm DISGUSTED. I really wish I hadn't uninstalled this because I now fear, as I suspected, that I may never be able to get it back and I will be FORCED to spend more money. This is ridiculous. I wish I had never sent my laptop out for repair. I took them several days to figure out that  bulb and some wires were damaged and there was no real reason to wipe my whole computer. I wouldn't be dealing with any of this if I hadn't and the original problem is still there, when I open the laptop, the screen blanks out and it takes a minute or so to start functioning, but that is another matter.
I have tried to access the 24 hour chat again but that is not working anymore either.
Can someone please help me? Thanks!

  • Problem with Photoshop and Corrupt User Account

This morning when I attempted to save a document I was working on in Photoshop CS3, the application suddenly crashed. Since then, I have not been able to reopen Photoshop without it quitting unexpectedly within seconds of launch. Never had this happen before. I tried rebooting, resetting the PRAM, fixing disk permissions, repairing the disk, rebuilding the directory with DiskWarrior, trashing Photoshop's preference files and reinstalling the program with no change. None of the other apps on my computer seem affected, only Photoshop.
What did make a difference was creating a new user account. While logged in to the new account, Photoshop launches fine and I can work in it with no problem. I also have a Carbon Copy Cloner backup of my boot drive (which I've failed to keep up to date - it's a few months old) and Photoshop works fine from there (if I boot from the clone).
So it seems that my primary user account has become corrupted. What I'm wondering is if (1), I can "repair" my old User Account or (2), if I should move all my user files to the new User Account (and the best way to do that) or (3), if I should try and update the clone of my hard drive without transferring any of the User Account or possible OS corruption to it and then wipe my primary drive clean (after I've tested the clone) and reclone the clone back to the primary.
    Thanks for reading.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

can i use a 2nd iphone if i install itunes on another user account.when i tried to create a second library i messed up both phones, the second one now has all my contacts and when it sends txts it either says its my other phone or email address. i can cope with the first phone and getting it back on itunes but dont want to syn the 2nd phone until i know it is independant of the other one. Does it matter that both phones use the same itunes store account?

Deleting the account on your phone only removes if from your phone.  The account and it's data remain intact and doing so will not effect your daughter's phone.
To do this, first go to Settings>iCloud on your phone and turn any synced data (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off, and when prompted, choose to keep the data on the phone.  When finished, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  Then set up a new iCloud account with a different Apple ID and turn any data you want to sync with iCloud (contact, calendars, etc.) back to On.  This will upload your data to your new iCloud account.

  • Photoshop launches in Admin account but not in User account??

My 2007 Mac Pro is working fine. Just installed 10.6.7 on freshly wiped HD in Bay #2. Used the migration feature to bring over everything from drive in Bay #1 (which runs 10.5.8). After that: Photoshop CS5 will not launch (on either drive) under the regular user account. Throws 2 messages as follows: "Cannot find scratch disk because disk is unavailable." Then: "Cannot initialize because disk is unavailable."
But - just logged in on my Admin account on the Snow Leopard drive. I then tried (for the first time ever, I think) to launch PS CS5 just to see what would happen. The app launched normally!
    This after:
    1. using Adobe uninstaller to remove "original" install of PS CS5 from the Snow Leopard drive. Then reinstalling. (first reinstall of THREE). This did not work to make the app launch, still got above messages.
    2. Ran permission repairs (I know - you don't have ta tell me.)
    3. Ran DiskWarrior - applied new directory to both Leopard and Snow Leopard drives.
    4. I then called Adobe support. Let the agent connect to my desktop from where he did another un-install & re-install using downloaded Adobe utility app. (A guy in India ran my Mac Pro in Michigan for 30 minutes while I sat there, entering Admin password when needed for the operations. Amazing.) He also performed Adobe diagnostics. All without success (on the User account).
After that, he gave up and arranged for a higher level agent to call me tomorrow (Wed. 4/13).
    5. Adding: during the above Adobe effort, it came to me that I have too many versions of Photoshop. (I had CS, CS3, CS 4 and CS 5.) So - I systematically removed all versions except the original CS from both the Leopard and Snow Leopard drives. I used AppDelete for this removal, hoping to get all pref files, etc. I even deleted an old version of Acrobat - just because I no longer need it. Then I ran DiskWarrior again and used PreferentialTreatment to check for bad prefs: then again installed CS 5 again - on both drives. (Still working in my normal User account.)
    6. Adding: all along, I had no trouble launching and using Photoshop Elements 8 on either drive. I had originally set the PSE scratch disk to my RAID storage drives (Bay #3 & #4). So I was sure by then that I had forgotten to apply the same designation for scratch disk of Photoshop CS5. This was the only variable or possibility I knew of at the time. Guessing: I had set CS 5 to use the drive I wiped clean for Snow Leopard and that's why it came up with: "drive not available."
Repeating: it was not until I logged into my Admin account on the Snow Leopard drive and found I could launch Photoshop from that account that I decided to check in here with my question:
    Q. What is the remedy for having one account which won't allow launch for some (in this case, just ONE) apps?
Sorry to be long-winded: this was a major, day-long effort and I want to provide a complete picture of what was done to trouble shoot. Thanks in advance for any help.

    1. Standard procedure is to do all but a few operations from Standard User accounts: which I have always done. All software installations have been from my original Standard User account.
Actually, most people use their admin accounts for things like installs, and some apps may not be installable from a standard account or may not function properly there, unless they can authenticate to admin privileges to install things in places standard users don't have access.
several complete uninstalls followed by an equal number of reinstalls FROM the original CS 5 install disk made no difference: when in the Standard User account. CS 5 DOES work under the Admin account on the new Snow Leopard installation (on Bootable Drive #2).
That matches with my experiences with Photoshop Elements... it only works if you've got admin privileges, unless you figure out what items are inaccessible from a standard user account and change their permissions.
I'm sure most experienced users would say that sticking with a Regular User account for daily operations is best.
In reality, that's not as prevalent as it probably should be. In part, that may be because of other software that similarly doesn't run on a standard account. In addition, running on an admin account really isn't as much of a risk as it might seem. I finally gave up years ago on using a standard account, and have never had a problem as a result of using an admin account for day-to-day operations. The stuff you can least afford to lose - ie, your documents - you have full access rights to in a standard account anyway, making your data no safer. It's easier to bork the system in an admin account, but the system is easily replaced.
I have seen (here and elsewhere) that creating a new Reg User account is the remedy when something suddenly won't work
That is true, but it's not a magic wand. In this case, though, I don't think that's likely to help. You're welcome to try it, but I highly recommend doing so in a non-destructive way, so that you can easily switch back to your regular account if it doesn't work.

  • Trouble with CS2 on Mac G5 with new user accounts - activation issues?

My system is a Mac G5 Quad running OS 10.5.8, and I have the CS2 premium suite. When I bought the machine I did everything under one user account. Several months ago the account started giving me a few problems, and my circumstances changed, so it made sense to create new, separate user accounts on my Mac for work and personal use.
Recently I offered to help a friend out with some design work and tried to start InDesign CS2 from my new business account. I was immediately presented with a demand for a serial number. I looked it up and entered it. An error popped up that said
    "Invalid Serial Number
The serial number you provided is not valid.
Please check your serial number and re-enter it."
I tried a couple more times, making sure I had it right. No success.
I gave up and launched my original user account, launched InDesign and started the project. I set the document up and tried to save it. InDesign displayed an error stating  "Cannot save "Untitled-1" under a new name. The file "DBTmp[bunch of numbers]" is damaged (error code:0"  Each time I relaunched and tried again the temp filename was different.
So now I suddenly am without one of my primary tools and have no idea how to get it back. I am guessing this is a problem with the activation mechanism, but can't find many resources on this topic. It would appear that my attempt to launch InDesign from my new account triggered a piracy protection code or something.
I am typing this while waiting on hold for Adobe support. 25 minutes and counting...
    Thanks.
    Paul

    Bob, Thank you so much!
I already have Acrobat 8.2.4, so I didn't start installing 8.2.2. However, I started working through solution 2 and discovered my new business user account was denied access to /Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/.  I changed the permissions on that directory to give my account read access, and InDesign fired up like normal. I didn't even need to replace the files.
    Thanks again for the assistance.
It's interesting to learn CS2 is not supported in my OS version. It works fine (until this).

  • Non-Admin User Account Desktop is all messed up..graphically...HELP!

This issue is difficult to explain, but here it goes...
I have 2 users (desktops) setup on Lion.  My primarydesktop is the Admin account and my wife has her own (for her iTunes, mail, etc.).  Until just recently, I could switch between users easilyand stuff worked properly.  However, lately I switch to my wife's useraccount and everything is jacked up.  The icons and dock are both big& blocky and whenever I click on an icon it disfigures thewallpaper.  Also, the wallpaper image is also messed up.
Itjust started doing this so not sure what happened or what I can do tofix it.  Is it possible to nuke her desktop/user acct and start freshwithout messing up mine?  Or do I have to do the entire machine andrestore from Time Machine?
    Totally perplexed by this one.
    Thanks!
    Bryan

There is only one solution: create a new Standard user account and set it as your auto login account, if you use that feature.
Using what you describe is mostly a false sense of security. Were someone to hack into the computer they could hack into the standard account, so you would not wish to keep any sensitive data in that account. Other things to consider:
Turn on your Firewall in Security & Privacy preference panel.
Use software to mask your online presence such as ProxyCap 2.03, MacProxy, Proxifier, or Hotspot Shield.

Photoshop Elements 11 installed on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5. Application running successfully on bot main user and administrative accounts for considerable time with no warning messages. When established a new user account on same computer and try to call up elements receive message “Some ot the application components are missing from the Application directory. Please reinstall the application.” How do I correct this problem without disturbing application in main user account?

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur?  If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.
Have you removed and reinstalled Photoshop Elements 11?  This may reset the file permissions to the correct state to allow it to work under new accounts.
