Php5-sybase (MSSQL) or lack thereof?

I didn't want to need support for MSSQL but sometimes you're in situations where you have to interface with it.  Anyway, using PHP + MSSQL in Ubuntu was a breeze I just installed the following package:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/en/jaunty/web/php5-sybase
I was kind of surprised not finding this in Arch, but maybe I'm retarded and couldn't find it.  So my solution was to download and extract (using deb2tgz):
(PHP5 Module) http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ … 1_i386.deb
(Sybase Lib) http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/m … 4_i386.deb
I then copied the php module and lib files to the correct directories (having PHP already installed) and voila it worked like a champ.  I believe I copied over a total of 3-5 files.
Now I, I have it working with no problems, but did I do more work then necessary, am I missing that we have this already?

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

  • Analog distortion and digital's lack thereof

    Djokes wrote:
"analog is distorting - without a doubt - tape decks were like compressors in a way and that is what being simulated by e.g. mcdsp or crane song... However, using no eq or tape deck - the distortion is minimal.... but analog is distorting what is actually there - digital is not - cuz it aint "Seeing" it all....so the distortion will be false...And we dont need to start a discussion about that we like the distortion that analog brings - do we now?"
Let's start one though shall we.
First I fail to see how digital isn't seeing it all. Unless you're talking about inaudible frequency ranges which I will admit may be more important than not. Digital lays it all on the table. No compensation, no analogesque minimal distortion. So this would be a true picture of the audio right.
I mean if you're talking about the nuances of environment then digital still captures that stuff as it's mic'd. The thing digital doesn't capture is the distortion signature of the analog device. Now if you've been trained over decades to appreciate that distortion, hearing digital which lacks that of course would lead one to say it sounds cold.
The question is whether that distortion is the signature of quality music, or whether a talented producer/mixing engineer, can create a signature digital distortion which is either as good or better than analog. I'm a firm believer in the latter though I will admit we haven't surpassed analog yet. But I also believe the answer isn't in trying to emulate analog, but rather using the digital for its own strengths to create something all together new.

then we'd have to start a new topic called what is accurate:-))) Anyway, listening to a guy playing an acoustic guitar live would by many be considered a true source of audio.... So if we have a mic that can actually capture the movements the gas molecules in air makes and translate those correctly into currents - then we can assume that at least the mic is giving us the true source...If the mic "Which it cant" could translate the audio one 100 percent accurately into current the mixing board would only "see" current actually VOLTS and treat those as such...if we were to apply no eqs and no effect at all - the next step of inaccuracy would be your speakers which would have to translate the currents and make the membranes vibrate - which would then again compress and rare-fact the gas molecules in the air - thus making u able to hear it....
The mixing board is treating the current coming from the mic more or less constantly the way it came from the mic - the digital converters are only treating what comes from the mic 44100 times per second - this is why analog is called analog and is seen as treating the signal the way we hear it....
What do we hear - and what is there and what is our brain doing.....
the air that is being put in motion by a source being a true source or speakers is hitting our ears with the speed of sound - our ears are like a mic we a picking up differences in the molecules and our brain is translating it into what we call sound... Digital audio is actually exploiting our imperfections this is why we only need to sample 22050 times per second (Hearing Threshold) - the actually reason for sampling at twice the freq of hearing is because of the problem that causes the low pass filters to be there in the first place...(why the lowpass filters are needed would be too long to desribe)
The reason for 44100 is the hearing threshold of 22050 Hz - I dont really no anyone above thirty that can hear above 18000 Hz and make use of what he is hearing - so why not sample at 16000HZ - or 32000 Hz - the reason is mirroring cuz of imperfect sinuses - and facts of a physical law : There can be no 90° Low pass filter....
An EQ works with phase displacement - what actually happens when u cut 4 KZ by 4 db. is that the original signal is being phase displaced at the freq. u enter - what happens is that those freq.'s are being less amplified - There are physical laws about waveforms e.g. when two waves layer each other at the same maxima you will gain 6 db aka doubling the amplitude...when two waves hit each other where one has maxima and the other minimum you'll achieve complete cancelation...
what really happens when u talk analog dist. is that the sinus(Wavesform) is being distorted so it looks more like a triangular waves form.... This gives us a feeling of loudness and warmth...
If u want your digital mix to sound loud - take the "beautiful" sinus and turn it into a triangle by changing the gain - after that you will see the wave form being cut at the top and bottom but it aint sounding bad - only louder - Unless u overdo it:-))))
There's a lot more to it than what I just described - and it is quite interesting - If u go to amazon.com there are two kind a books about his stuff...1) The book describing it fragmental like I just did and Books that really describing it according to physics....Latter mentioned are VERY dry but if u take the time and have the interest you will find them real helpful and it will also change the way you "Look" at audio and mixing and recording
This is a huge topic consuming man since the day of recording audio...

  • Dolby Digital 5.1.. Or The Lack Thereof

So im wondering why with all the fanfare from BT, why the lack of 5.1 surround sound?!
Great HD PQ (On Sky, can't comment for other providers) yet bog-standard 2.0 stereo... WHY?

    P13,
Is there any media provider in the UK that supports an app with 5.1 surround sound? Sky Go does not nor does bbc iplayer, netflix or blinkbox
sky twitter account a customer ask why sky go streams are worst then sd and yet bt and eurosports apps stream in hd. Reply from mod, oh thats easy the files for hd are some huge that sky go can't play them and no app can stream hd due to this and so when they say they are they're really sd streams, if there was any way around this we would have done it now.

  • Backspace key, lack thereof

Okay, this is kind of silly, but I really need to know.
Made the move from PC to Mac and there is no Backspace key, is there a way where I do not have to go to the end of a word and then use delete?
    Thanks

I ran into the same problem. The delete key in the upper right acts just like the backspace key on a PC, in other words, go to the end of the word and it deletes from right to left. If you hold the Fn key while pressing the Delete key, it will delete from left to right.

  • OBIEE 11g patching strategies (or lack thereof)

I'm very interested to know how people are patching production instances of OBIEE 11g. I've been very frustrated by the fact that Oracle releases tons of "one off" patches (which aren't guaranteed not to screw up other things), but no "production ready" patches that have been fully regression tested, etc. I don't think they EVER released a production patchset for 11.1.1.3, I think everyone had to wait for 11.1.1.5 (which was almost a year later)...
I can understand this for the 10.1.3.4.x series, because that seems basically "mature" - but OBIEE 11g has a TON of bugs in it.
So my question is - what strategies are people using to test patches and decide whether to put them in or not? I just installed a patch that is crashing the server when trying to save repository variables and init blocks. I don't have time to spend a day testing each and every "controlled" patch out there.
What to do? Is Oracle ever going to start releasing monthly or quarterly "patchsets" that have all patches bundled and tested together?
    Thx,
    Scott

Hi Dpka, that's exactly what I was afraid of. I've gone from being a data mart and OBIEE developer to spending literally half my time working on Oracle SRs for OBIEE 11.1.1.5. I'm hitting the exact same issues as you - lots of untested one-off patches that break other items, with no fully integration tested patchsets ever being released (11.1.1.3 was out for over a year...never saw a patchset for that...I can't wait another year for an integrated set of 11.1.1.5 patches).
Here's my high level complaint - Oracle USED to put together patchsets, which were groups of patches tested to work together. These would come out every few months. But for the last two years or so, I don't see Oracle doing that any more - not just for OBIEE - I see this for almost everything (for example, we also use OWB - trying to do the upgrade to 10.2.0.5 but there are literally a hundred patches to apply).
In general - has Oracle simply stopped producing patchsets? If so - I really demand a refund for the support we're paying. My job is not to spend two weeks applying 100 patches on something because Oracle can't do basic integration testing on their patches.
Uggg, sorry, really really frustrated with Oracle right now. I wish they would stop working on "new features" and crap on 11g OBIEE and get the basic tool to work properly. I really get the feeling a lot of what went into 11g was glitz and glamour, but it was implemented by people that had never used the tool "real life". Just a guess, but some of the bugs are so basic that I refuse to believe that anyone that ever actually implemented and used the tool could have made those mistakes.

  • "Show Package Content" organization ... or lack thereof.

I have been using iPhoto on and off again since 2004. Over the years we have updated our computer various times, so the pictures have been constantly moved around from iPhoto '04 to '06 to '08 to'09. My husband has also 'backed up' my photos by dropping them into an external hard drive. Plus, I occasionally used an old PC to store pictures, and those too were put onto the hard drive. In the end, that meant that we had over 26,000 photos, mostly duplicates, on our hard drive.
This month I finally went through all those pictures, deleted duplicates, and imported them all to iPhoto '09. I organized them by albums, and named and dated everything. (Some of the pictures were placed under the wrong date because of either camera setting problems or because they were edited in Photoshop and the saved with the editing date.)
So I just cleared my hard drive and went to move my newly organized iPhoto files to the hard drive, but I'm having issues. When I right click the iPhoto icon and select "Show Package Contents" I see all sorts of folders and junk. Frankly, I don't understand most of it. But I can see that there are pictures under the files "Data", "Data.noindex","Modified", and "Originals". The problem is this: the files aren't organized at all in there! I guess I expected them to be organized either like they were in iPhoto (the way I just did them) or like they used to be in old iPhotos (you know, with the years, then 1-12 for the months, then the numbers for the days, etc.) Instead, they are organized under the old dates, folders with one picture will not have any other pictures that were taken at the same time, pictures that I deleted will show up, etc. (And yes, I did empty the iPhoto trash.) I'm just wondering where on earth the organization is, and if I can trust that everything is in there when I move it to my hard drive.

What if I decide in the future that I don't want to use iPhoto? Or what if I want to burn all these files onto a cd for others to use that don't have iPhoto?
Simply select the photo(s) in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) and use the photos however you want - quick and simple - your photos are always available for any use
Do I have to save all the files externally as well so that the pictures are actually organized outside of iPhoto?
You can but it is a waste of time and disk IMHO since they are always readily available as describe above

  • ADDT DOCUMENTATION - Or the lack thereof !

Have just installed DWCS3 + ADDT. Wanted to read up on Nextensio only to find that there is no doco on this. Here is what I did:
Opened up the Create Dynamic Lists (used to be called Nextensio Lists) wizard and clicked on the Help button. This takes me to an Adobe website and provides the informative message of:
    Not Found
The requested URL /en_US/Dreamweaver/9.0_ADDT/MXK3_045310_NeXTensio_List_Wz.htm was not found on this server.
So I am wondering if the current distribution of ADDT is "pre release" since there is no Help button on the toolbar anymore.
Some advice from Adobe on this would be nice as the Help available is pretty sparse compared to the Help available for Kollection Pro. Quite dissapointing in fact. As a result, I have to keep closing down DW CS3/ADDT and open up DW 8 / Kollection Pro. All because of a minor bug in Kollection Pro which I came across 3 days ago. That bug forced me to insall DW CS3 and ADDT and waste time on what was a tight project. Not happy Adobe !

    Hi Gunther
Thanks for the reply and your hint on finding the help. Yes I eventually found it but my main gripe back then in May was that it was incomplete when I clicked on the help button in one of the ADDT Server behaviour wizards ( I was taken to a Page Not Found error ) and was not available from the DW Help dropdown list under the main menu Help button.
Yes, I could understand what you were getting at and I will be applying your Spry/PHP article in my next project - just wish I had come across it a bit earlier as I could have used it in the current project which includes hundreds of images from a number of different categories. Thanks again.
I understand that there are differences between the old Kollection and ADDT however, the fact that no attempt was made, nor has there been made as yet, to prepare or update the old tutorials for ADDT. This is a significant failure as the How To's were a godsend to me and I will bet London to a Brick, many more who purchased the old Interakt products. They must have saved me hours upon hours and also gave me an insight into using the advanced features of the product which allowed me to take full advantage of what the product offers. What this failure by Adobe means is that people who are coming to the ADDT for the first time and have not had the benefit of the tutorials included in previous versions will face an uphill battle coming to terms with what they have purchased which in turn may de-value ADDT. This failure I believe is also repeated in DW CS3 as appears not to include the tutorial material included in previous versions. For example, where are the Tutorials for CS3 ?? They are no longer included in the Getting Started section of Help as was the case with previous versions and the novice is instead referred to the lightweight trivial examples in the video workshop. So, if you and I have any influence over Adobe then perhaps they will take some notice of my rant and pick up their act. Lets face it, they are making heaps and can surely afford to invest in quality tutorials for their product especially one such as ADDT.
    Best regards,

  • Hp support or lack thereof

I have a presario f700 under warranty and the usb ports stopped responding.  When I sent it in,they diagnosed water/smoke damage which is entirely false.   I was passed to 3 different "service techs";  I specifically asked the third one before I explained the dilemma.  After arguing with her for a while she started the mantra over and said I couldn't talk to the service tech as they didn't have phones!!!!!  So after lying to me that she was a service tech and lied that the service techs aren't allowed to have phones how am I supposed to believe them about the bogus diagnosis? The service tech I talked to about the problem originally was on the phone. The rest of the computer worked fine, except the usb ports.I guess the liquid/smoke was magic and just went to a certain area. I think they are trying to just get out of standing by the warranty, which is up in about two weeks. Anyway, I am trying to find out how to contact HP directly with an email to resolve this issue. I feel like the phone is just being passed around in a room to a different person each time, I guess whoever draws the short straw.  They now want me to pay $750 to get it fixed. How do I actually talk to someone with authority?

I have just had the most frustrating time (3+ hours) with HP's so called Technical Support. All I was asking for was a part number...
eventually they tried to send me to phone support who will not answer anything about an out of warranty machine, even a part number, and they knew that, they were just trying to get rid of me without answering my question. It was only the volume of my voice with phone support which eventually got me a supervisor who (against their "can't help if out of warranty" rules) stated that that part had no number, it was part of the M/B and that I should take it to any technician and that "they" would know how to replace it. This was after hours of chat support. I was hoping to order the replacement so that I could guarantee a suitable and timely repair. I repeatedly tried to "buy" the part but they said they couldn't supply it
In the interest of this specific forum, a serious suggestion to HP on how to reduce customer frustration and complaints.
Put knowledgeable people on the phone and give them the tools they require to do their jobs, namely manuals and phones they can use to access other resources for the client, etc. Or better yet put actual technicians on the phone! Provide access to complaint forms for those who have been frustrated by the poor service, and hire some supervisor's who have the chestnuts to come to the phone and deal directly with unsatisfied customers. Then give them some resources to compensate those who have already been offended by the atrocious business practices of your suuport team and who have wasted hours of their own time getting no where due to poor service.
Seems to me the entire HP support team could use a trip to MacDonald's University!
I've posted the entire chat session in the following post so that others will know what they're up against when calling up Chat Support...

  • Speed of Fujitsu 160GB Drive (or lack thereof)

I just received one of the new SR MBP with a 160GB drive. I also have access to a C2D with a 160GB drive. The SR has a Fujitsu drive while the C2D has a Hitachi drive. The performance difference is dramatic in favor of the C2D with the Hitachi drive. In fact running XBench the disk performance of the Fujitsu will bring down the overall performance of the SR MBP often to less than the C2D. If I take the disk out of the equation the SR is clearly faster. I am at a loss as regard to options. While I understand the reasons for having multiple suppliers each supplier should provide reasonably similar performance. Has anyone else noticed this or have similar results?

Could you copy and paste the System Profiler info
under Hardware > Serial-ATA for both drives?
BTW what OS versions are you running on these two?
Supposedly 10.4.10 makes the newer Macs faster.

  • OBIEE web catalog organization (or lack thereof...)

Hi, I'm trying to come up with a "best practices" scheme to allow organizing our "shared" web catalog folders and directory structure. Our particulars are:
    - We need to have one group of dashboards / reports that are "enterprise approved"
    - we need to have another set of areas available for various business units to do their own work in, but not be available as "enterprise approved", just for business area use
    - need to cover analyses, dashboards, filters, prompts, etc.
    - would like to keep dashboard related items organized together if possible
    - would like to keep prompted analyses separate from analyses used in dashboards if necessary
    - power users will all have their own "personal" folders, I'm not worried about those (but if hints on how to arrange to make migration to either the shared "business unit" or shared "enterprise approved" folders, that would be great)
    - I'd like dashboards to show up properly, which seems to imply they need to be just one level under the main "Shared" directory
Does anyone have a best practices way of organizing the web catalog to make the above easy to accomplish?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi
Did anyone help you out?  I am also looking for a list of best practices or blogs that contain that type of information.
    Thanks

  • Hot Keys, or lack thereof.

I was just wondering why there is no hot key for tool selection in Apple Works. Can this be enabled or is the program just that bad? I am using the drawing palette and clicking everywhere seems so 1986ish.

    Hi Gregory,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
    None that I know of.
Your "1986ish" comment is reasonably accurate. AppleWorks's genesis was as an Apple II gs application at StyleWare in 1986. The Mac version, ClarisWorks 1.0 was released in 1991. Despite the name change to AppleWorks during vwersion 5, most of the changes since '91 have tended toward the cosmetic more than the functional (I overgeneralize here).
The port to OS X was done quickly, and around that time, Apple's attention moved to new software rather than a full rewrite of AW from the ground up. Development essentially stopped in 2004, and Apple officially declared EOL on AppleWorks in 2007.
Great application, still useful, but missing some of the more recent bells and whistles.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Premiere color management, or lack thereof?

Now I know Premiere isn't color managed in a strict sense: it doesn't use ICC profiles to map an output of simulate displays like After Effects or, to a point, Speedgrade does.
I also know that internally, all effects and color processing takes place within Premiere's own wide gamut 32-bit space.... but that means the footage still needs to be converted when read and eventually displayed regardless of if it's your computer monitor, your broadcast monitor or a file.
After all I've read I can't quite put my finger on how Premiere handles things. It's not a problem that keeps me up at night as my projects go through a full finishing phase but I would just love to know in general.
Is Premiere using smart interpretation when reading footage? How does it know if something needs to be transformed from a log space or Rec 601 or Rec 709. I know many media files are tagged internally with that info, but what if they aren't?
What exactly does Premiere output to? Rec 709 across the board?
I guess I just don't understand how Premiere does things when it's stand-alone.

email, but it does not really matter which app. all only allow color

  • Having problems with File IO, not sure what im doing or lack thereof.

This is my code, basically I create a class which reads data from a .dat file which contains names and salarys, based on a question i found on a forum online, anyways I first created the .dat, now I need to create a class which takes the .dat file and writes it to a .txt file...he is my code I keep getting an EOFException which I have read in the docs is caused by an unexpected stop in reading of the data from file.
