Physical / Business / Presentation Layers

I appreciate that OBIEE is primarily a datawarehouse tool and that best results are achieved by creating star structures as the basis for building reports, BUT, say you have a highly volatile area, where people are really on interested in the situation 'now' as they are looking for items that have not be fulfilled; -
1. Can you model the layers directly from the transacting database
2. What struture should you use, given that the tables follow this physical model?
Header < Line < Distribution
|
Header< Line < Distribution
n.b. < = 1 to many - there is no crows foot on my keyboard
| = optional 1 to 1
The reason for my question is star format consistently works for me, but if I try anything else the Administrator tool will not let me save the result.
Thnaks for any input,
Robert.

Robert,
Regardless of complexity (3nf transactional) or simplicity (think flatfile) we must always model a star schema in the BMM. For your example I'd consider one 'invoice' logical fact with 3 logical table sources, one for headers, one for lines, one for distributions (each mapped to equiverlant physical table). I'd be looking to map as much as possible against all 3 logical table sources (like Value, Qty etc. etc.).
Then look to de-normalise as much as possible into an 'Invoice Dim' of sorts and have levels 'Header' - > Line -> Distribution as the hierarchy so we can set the content levels in our LTS's accordingly back on our logical fact.

  • Which program for basic business presentations?

Forgive me but I need to ask for advice on what program to use for video editing for basic business presentations. I think Premiere Pro is way beyond my needs, mainly in terms of learning curve (as well as the cost).
For what it's worth, I'm an avid Adobe user, and have been for years, for other programs: I currently use InDesign, Photoshop Elements, Dreamweaver, Audition, and Acrobat Standard (and also subscribe to the Acrobat Connect service). So, I don't feel too bad asking this forum to recommend "different" software for video editing. (Maybe Premiere Elements is best for me, but maybe not.)
I do not have any experience in video editing, and I do not have any time for a significant learning curve. I also don't need to do anything fancy.
I bought a MiniDV camcorder (Panasonic PV-GS300). I'm using a PC (3.6G, 1G RAM, half the 160G HD available, though I'll have to add a Firewire PCI card shortly) and Windows XP Pro. I'll get tripod lights and a good headworn mic. I use Nero Burning ROM 6 to burn DVDs (I've used its simple wizard to convert files and burn DVDs).
My purpose is to create about a dozen or so 6- to 12-minute clips consisting mainly just of me standing and giving a verbal speech and with some still images created from the computer (PDF, GIF, or whatever) stuck in between the video (I'll probably want some of the speech from the video taping, or else some speech I create in Audition, to play through the showing of the still images).
I'm not concerned with fancy video effects! I don't need it and I can't justify the learning curve (or cost) for it! Fades in and out are probably as advanced as I will get, though I really don't even need that.
I'll want to create the videos in file formats for Windows and for Mac, and to put them on our web site for streaming video as well as burn DVDs.
I'm sure I'll want to be able to adjust the image sizes and file sizes by choosing the tradeoff level with quality, though I hope there will be a set of standard defaults. I also really need good user forum support (I have no idea if Premiere Elements is enough for me but I sure have come to rely on the users on the Adobe forums).
I need to ask whether I should get Premiere Elements or... yes, I know it's blasphemy but I swear I'm a loyal member of the clan in all other ways... whether there is another video editing program that's light-weight enough to be pretty quick in getting through the learning curve for the basics I want, and that's relatively inexpensive. (I've been told on one forum... blasphemy again, I know... that I should look into Vegas 7, but the price and sophistication seem way beyond my needs based on an initial glance on the web -- but maybe I should just spring for it and go. It also seems Vegas 7 is more practical for my needs than Premiere Pro -- but I'm really hoping I'll be pointed at much lower-end programs.)
I really appreciate any advice I can get. I run a small business with big growth ahead (I have a tiger by the tail) and need to jump on this and to do it myself for now, and I just do not have a lot of time for learning.
    Thanks so much!
    Jay

    OK, fair questions.
In my opinion, the learning curve for the most commonly used 95% of the programs is exactly the same between Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements. It really is. Capture video, figure out what you want on the timeline, put it on the timeline, add transitions, add music, export to something a DVD program can use, all of that. It is darn near identical.
However... then you decide you want to do something interesting. You come online and we tell you that is it very simple. Just use Premiere Pro to do... oh, wait, you don't have Pro? Just Elements? Too bad.
OK. Then you say "How do they make those great motion titles?". We say "It's easy, just use one of the text animation presets in After Effects". What? No After Effects? Too bad.
So let's say you like using After Effects for titles and you decide you want to expand your knowledge. Simple. Get some projects from Dean Velez and modify them to suit you. Do you need to learn it all at one time? No. Just what you need when you need it.
This is one reason that if you buy the Production Premium, one of the choices for extra goodies is a one month subscription to Lynda.com to watch their tutorials.
Spend the time watching the tutorials. If something catches you eye, write down where you saw it so you can go back and really learn it.
Just because you own a hammer and a saw and other hand tools doesn't mean you need to learn to be a carpenter. It just means that when your wife asks you to do something, you will have the required tools so you can go on the web and learn how to do that task, without having to run to Home Depot - which may be closed at the time you need it.
I originally bought Premiere 6.0 and when I went to an Adobe demo at DVExpo in NYC back in 2002 I saw an After Effects demo. I called from the Adobe booth to order After Effects. Why? When I saw that the learning curve was only hard if you tried to tackle the whole thing, and I realized I could just use the part I needed, my whole opinion changed.
If you only used After Effects for text in motion and for Stills in motion (Ken Burns and much more), you would get your money out of it. And that stuff can be learned in 15 minutes. Add in the real need for you, the chroma key, and the time savings is HUGE. You really need to know less to use Keylight than you do to use Premiere Pro to attempt the same thing.
Having the full version of Photoshop is nothing more than you have now. Until you need more. Then you have it.
The ability to use all of the Adobe products together outweighs any Vegas or Avid (consumer) advantages.
Besides, we are much more helpful on this forum than those other guys! ;)

  • How can I download documents and business presentations to my i pad

HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD DOCUMENTS AND BUSINESS PRESENTATIONS TO MY IPAD ?

OK, I tried them all. Hit Caps doesn't do anything. E-mail to myself--ok, I got it in Mail, but can't get it out of there. I can read it there, but what if I accidently delete that mail? I have Pages. Can't get the PDF into iCloud. Dragged it to "books" in I tunes, and it is there, but doesn't get to the ipad.
Apple didn't used to be this complicated!!!!!
Whoops! I quit iTunes, and reopened. It synced with my iPad, and lo and behold there in books is my PDF. Would sure be easier if when I plugged iPad in it appeared on my desk like a disk, and I could just drag and drop stuff.

  • 3 different Business Service Layers - 1 Taskflow for 3 Applications

    Hello,
I'm using JDEV 11.1.2.3 and have the following use case:
I got 3 different Business Service Layers. All based on 3 different ADF BC projects with 3 different underlying DB schemas.
    On top i got 3 viewcontroller-projects.
Now I'd like to put together some controller- and view-elements inside 1 taskflow for all 3 applications.
Is this possible and how? How can a single taskflow work on top of 3 different service layer? Is the ADF model layer capable of solving this use case?
Thanks a lot for all incoming answers!
    Greetings,
    Marc

    Hi
if the data controls are different (different names and packages) then you should be able to use them from a single task flow. However, be aware that this means 3 database connections per user, which is quite expensive

Is there any where that I can voice why I returned my beloved new Ipad? I was told I could move my Keynote presentations to it and then use it for my
business presentations. Unfortunately that turned out to not be true. I need the IPad to work with a remote.
The Ipad is on a short cable to my projector. I am usually on a podium 30 feet away. No infra red receiver on the IPad and
the Iphone remote needs wi fi which is not always available in all the locations I do my teaching and lecturing in.
If you can build a remote into the Ipad in the future I would really like to use an Ipad to replace my heavier lap top for business travel. Thank You Kathy McNeil.

    Get a longer cable?

  • Is it the best choice for basic business presentations?

[I posted this same message in the Adobe Lab for VC3. Pardon the clone.]
I'd greatly appreciate opinions, please, on how appropriate VC3 might be for me. I need to create simple business presentations, and I am not at all experienced with video and have very little time for learning.
Please see my post/thread in the Adobe Premiere Pro forum, where I spell out my goals in more detail. That post/thread is at:

Sounds like you're just whom we had in mind when we conceived VC. It's designed to be intuitive and quick to learn while producing impressively professional quality results.

  • Lync and Office 2013 Home and Business 'Present PowerPoint' not working

    Hello All,
We have an Exchange online E1 plan that includes Lync, that we have been using without problems for the last year or so.
The 'Present PowerPoint' functionality of Lync is very useful, and again it has been working without fault until now.  However, for one user who we have upgraded to Office 2013 Home and Business (from Office 2010), it no longer works when she clicks on
present, select PowerPoint and select a .pptx file. She gets the following error message...
'the presentatio.ppx couldn't be converted for presentation because Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is not installed on this computer. Please install VBA and try again.'
The thing is it seems that Visual Basic for Applications is installed as a part of the Lync Basic Install. I re-installed Lync just in case, and when I clicked customize I ensured that Visual Basic for Applications was checked to install as run from the
    computer.
In searching online I can see plenty of other people suggesting with Office 2010 to repair the Office install, and select customize and make sure the Visual Basic for Applications is checked to install too.  However, with Office 2013 Home and Business
you don't get this option - it seems all or nothing.  I have tried repairing both installs, re-installing etc with no luck
So is it that Office 2013 Home and Business incompatible with Lync or can anyone help or throw some ideas at me?
    Thanks,
    Andrew.

The suggestion since there is not direct solution as of today  would be either roll back the office 2010 since we know this work
On upgrade to Office 2013 Pro use the full Lync Client

  • Business presentation of wat KM is and what it offers

    Hi,
We (IT) want to implement Knowlegde management. But first we have to convince our business (client) .
So we want to give a presentation of wat KM is and what it offers.
This presentation will not be done on a real life system but we want to use slides with printscreens of the application.
So I am looking for usefull information. I already found a printscreen of the navigation view, how you can upload a document, integration with MSS.
But this isn't enough because KM offers a lot more than this.
SAP offers a lot of information on KM, but most of the information is intented voor IT and not for the business. Or the information doesn't include printscreens of the application.
So does anybody knows where I can find more information with screenshots or has someone already the system live and is willing to take some screenshots and put them on the forum.
That would be very nice of you.
    Kind regards

  • I have a mac Book that will not open DVD's of Business Presentations.  I had my hard drive taken in to the Mac Store and had a new hard drive installed.  Since then I cannot open DVD's.  What is the application that I need, and the process. Tks

I have a mac book that will not open up DVD's recorded with a presentation.  I install the disc in a HP / windows 7 and it works fine.  I had my hard drive replaced and since then I cannot open up DVD's.  Was there a application that did not get installed?  And if so what is the process.

You need DVD Player. It should be in your Applications folder. If it is in there go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs and for "When you insert a video DVD" make sure DVD Player is selected.

  • Flash business presentation- Screen resolution help.....

Here's the deal. I'm creating a presentation on my laptop
which has a 1440x900 resolution. Now, once it's hooked up to the
projector, the projector automatically changes my screen res to
1024x768, which completely distorts everything and it gets blurry
    and not visually appealing.
What I'd like to do is to figure out a way around this. Like
maybe some way to reduce my screen res to 1024x768, but maintain
proportions with black borders like on a DVD that's been formatted
to fit your screen. Something like that. Can anybody think of
    anything?
    Thanks in advance.

Flash can read the screen resolution by calling to:
    System.capabilities.screenResolutionX //(and/or Y)
but it will not read the size of the browser window itself.
You may want to consider using a standard proportion and setting
    the swf to scale accordingly.

  • Changing connection pool

I have the three layers created in the RPD (physical, business, presentation). Now I have to point to another db with the same physical table structure. When I change the ODBC definition to point to another DB, I receive errors in Oracle because the physical columns in the rpd are mapped to a different table owner name from the first database. Is there a way to change the DB and not have to change the physical RPD layer?

  • Universal application platform

Here is an ordinary day in the IT department of a big company. Boss says: Hey, Jack, we have a new application. Is written in PowerBuilder and is has to be installed on all our 300 workstations !. Great, says Jack. Another pain in the ass. Last month was a Java Swing application, three months ago was a Visual Basic And I have to do all the work. Damn, I think I am gonna switch to a taxi driver job !.
Swell, isnt it ? Well, there are a few techniques to improve the installation procedure of a classic two tier application, but why not solve the problem from its root ? Hey, Jack, we have the solution !, we say to poor Jack. Ah, yes, I know, web applications of course. Workstations only have to have a browser. But man, they are so clumsy ! They are slow and not easy to develop. And its stupid to use internet technologies inside a LAN. And the users always complain about graphical interface. And you know how it is when end users complain about graphical interface !, says Jack, showing his teeth.
We smile condescendingly. We have a better solution.
Why not have them all ? Why not combine the best parts from both worlds ? This is what we propose now: a Universal Applications Platform. It is a thing that will allow LAN applications to be installed on a sever and to be accessed from a sort of browser, just like web applications, but the speed will be just like in 2-tier applications. And they will be easy to develop, with a RAD IDE. And the beauty of the interface will make women cry.
Now seriously. Here is the idea: in a web application, we have a data server which holds data, an application server which performs business computation and a web server which presents the data to its client the web browser. This is good for an internet application, no doubt about it. But
There are not many organizations who run web applications, compared to those which have classic 2-tier applications running. The need for this kind of applications was and will continue to be HUGE !
That is why we think it worth to develop a cool mechanism for LAN applications. It will be similar to normal browser-HTTP-web server mechanism, only the browser will be more cool, the protocol will be heavier (since data will not have to swim across the Internet ocean), faster and more powerful in order to achieve the performance of a 2-tier system. Instead of a web server there will be a presentation server, which will generate the view part (as in MVC pattern) and will deliver it to its cool browser.
Now lets put all the pieces together. We have:
    -     a data layer which, by the way, would be nice to be obiectual instead of relational;
    -     a business layer;
    -     a presentation layer: this would be one of the four parts of our cool mechanism;
    -     a connection & deliver manager  the second part of our cool mechanism;
    -     a cool protocol for local area network communication - the third part of our cool mechanism;
    -     a cool browser used to access the applications on the server: the final piece.
The presentation layer: this layer will generate the visual format of the data to be displayed to the end user. This layer will have to overcome the limitations of the HTML/CSS/JavaScript/AJAX and to provide a native-like interface and joy of living to end-users.
The connection & delivery manager: this will be something like a web server. It will manage connections and will deliver the requested content to each client.
The protocol for local area network communication: this will not be stateless like HTTP, it will be specially designed for LAN communication, for easy development and also for the performance needed by enterprise class applications. The communication could also be done by messages like in the old PeopleSoft architecture.
The Browser, or maybe is better to call it executer: this will be platform dependent. It will receive from the presentation layer a description of the page to be displayed and will build/render the page based on the underlying operating system capabilities. That description will contain both the structure of the page and the data.
The four layers - data, business, presentation layers and the connection manager - may be part of the same server program if best performance is desired, or they can be different programs, as they are now in web applications. The business layer could be represented by a stored procedures engine inside the data server, or it can be a regular J2EE server. The cool browser can be a regular browser updated to support the new cool protocol, but it better be totally new.
Of course this new devices will have to be widely accepted and become a de-facto industry standard, otherwise the goal of Universal Platform will not be achieved.
A few words about terminal software solution. We do not like this solution because this software is complicated and the network traffic increases unacceptably. And a word about applets: it is not a bad idea, still there is place for serious improvement. And Flash ? Not bad.
This was my idea. I hope you like it. If not, let forgotness lay above it

  • Reporting on 'TEXT' dataytpe

    All,
I've built a physical/business/presentation layer to report on the internal Informatica tables (REP_SESS_LOG, REP_SESS_TBL_LOG, REP_SUBJECT and REP_WFLOW_RUN). Very simple, lets me pull out key performance metrics. I've also built the same for the DAC Metadata tables, utilising 5 or 6 tables.
In both cases, I've run into a problem with "Description" fields and their datatype. For instance, the informatica column REP_SUBJECT.DESCRIPTION has a datatype of "Text" (length 32768) in my source database. I'm not sure how to handle this in the physical layer, so it's set to Longvarchar.
    When I use one of these "Text" columns in a report, I get the following error;
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. A select distinct is being issued. How can I get around this?

    Hello,
In the physical catalog properties --> Features tab --> look for DISTINCT_SUPPORTED and remove the check box under value.
    This should remove the distinct.

  • OBIEE SupplierSales Subject Area

    Hi,
I am a newbie to OBIEE and trying to learn. I have created a sample repository based on SUPPLIER2 oracle sample database. I have create the physical, business & presentation layer catalog. I can also see SupplierSales subject area in Answers and no errors in global consistency check. But when I expand Product dimension it throws an error saying "There was an unknown error with the server call", while it is allowing to expand other dimensions.
What could be the cause of this error? Why is it allowing to expand other dimensions & not Product dimension?
    Thanks,
