Placing Flex SWF inside HTML?

We're building a website that will incorporate a flex
gallery. We would like to house this inside of HTML on the page. Is
this possible? Would it be as simple as calling a regular flash (in
this case, flex) movie, or is it more complex? We dont want it to
take up the entire window, but only a portion, inside of a
template. Thanks!
Ryan

As JabbyPanda says, yes, In fact it is rare to find a Flex
app that is not contained in an html page. Flex builder generates
this wrapper for us automatically.
In an Flex only app, the object/embed tag is just set to take
up the whole browser.

• Call Flex swf inside extension object

Hi,
I am building a user application using Flex 3. The application allows user to input information using input components such as text areas, etc. The application will create an xml file from user info. The application needs to save xml file in user's local hard drive. For user convenience, we want to be able to call the application from inside a DW menu. This requires an extension which implies installing an mxp. To avoid multiple installs, we want to deliver the application inside the extension. This involves creating an extension object that has my Flex app embedded in it. I have been able to create the extension object, have it show up in my insert bar, and deliver my Flex swf inside the extension. However, when I type inside a text area in my swf, I am not able to. It acts as if disabled. I explicitly set my text area as editable=true and enabled=true. Why? Here is my extension:

• Fscommand when the swf inside html table

in the html file , when I put the swf file inside a table,
the fscommands does not work.
how do i make it work?
should i make any changes in the html? ?
notice: when the swf is out side the table , it is working
fine.

Found the solution to the problem.
wrapped the entire HTML page till the JSF component ( panelGrid) under <f:verbatim>.
something like this
<f:verbatim>

...

</f:verbatim>
<h:panelGrid> ... </h:panelGrid>
<f:verbatim>

• Control/unload swf inside html textfield i AS3

Hi,
In a CS3/As3 project I have xml files with html content loaded in a texfiled inside a mc. In some cases I have swf files embedded with img tag in the xml. The problem is that when a swf is loaded this way It keeps 'living', playing with sounds in the background when other xml files and swf are loaded in the texfiled.
Then, every time it is loaded, a new instance of the swf is created and played.
I have found out you can refer to the loader object with getImageReference method giving an id to img tag and, for example, adding an Event.COMPLETE listener to the loader.
But I don't know how to access to the loaded swf to unload it or at least stop it (mc_name.texfiled_name.swf_id doesn't seem to work in AS3)
Does anybody know if it is possible?
Thanks in advance

Thank you, the second method is good to control movieclip in my case (fp9).
But I have still the following problem: the loaded objects (swf or images) seem to remain in memory.
I have a loader like this (swf_Id is the id of img tag)
loader = myMC.MyHtmlTextField.getImageReference("swf_Id");
and, following your indication, a second Mc like this
myMC2=MovieClip(loader.content);
doing the following things seem to remove the objects from stage but with no effects on the memory wich always increases
myMC2.removeChildAt(0);
myMC2=null;
loader.unload();
Any idea about this?
Thanks a lot!

• Scrollbar missing. Help me bring it back please (swf inside HTML)

I published a swf file with the html wrapper.
Flash publish settings were-
Size - %
Height- 100%
Width 100%
Scale- No scale
HTML alignment- Default
Flash horizontal alignment- Center
Flash vertical alignment- Center
All good but there are no scroll bars on the browser when I make the browser window smaller? Search took me to this thread-
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3557607
The solution there is "find the parameter in your CSS that states "overflow: auto" or "overflow: hidden" and change it to "overflow: scroll"
I did that and now I see a white scroll track in the browser but no actual scroll bar wehn I resize the window? LOL What do you think is going on? How do I solve this problem? I am a NOOB!
Thanks

Well....
- I get a full white page with no test.swf file in it when using firefox.
- In Safari (PC) I see the full swf. I see Safari browser scroll bar but it is the length of the whole browser. When I reduce the size of the browser the scrollbar can't be scrolled as it remains 100% long.
- In IE I see complete white page but a horizontal band at the top showing small section of the test.swf.

• How to change index.template.html to put a HTML table side by side with Flex swf displayed in IE

I created my own index.template.html using tag to hold Flex swf file, but it only works for FireFox, not IE.

I just found 1 tricky solution.
Declare a variable containing the asset URL in the HTML, before the part. (Sample below.)
In the script (_edge.js), use this variable instead of the asset URL string . (replace the string constant with the variable)
In the server script, generate the HTML by changing the variable definition.
This is ugly...
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

• .swf inside HtmlLoader appears on top of other air content

When there is an HtmlLoader with a .swf wmode window the .swf file appears over top of everything!
I understand that .swf should appear above everything inside the HtmlLoader, but I don't think it should appear over top of anything outside of the HtmlLoader.
A simple example of this would be:

<s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
<mx:HTML location="http://youtube.com" width="100%" height="100%" />
<s:Button width="300" height="300" label="should be over all html content, .swf in html appears over it. click and watch a youtube video to see." />
</s:WindowedApplication>
I NEED a fix to this~!
Even placing a second HtmlLoader with an .swf wmode window over top produces random results with the top .swf sometimes on top and other times below the lower .swf

As you have discovered, two elements on the surface of a
cannot occupy the same space. The solution lies in getting one of the elements to "lie down," either by getting it totally off the surface and making it a background of it or by actually "levitating" one above the other.
Apply a unique id to each div in which an image now lies.
Place each image in the background of its div, defining it in your CSS.
You will not then be able to use the image as a button, and you may want to add something else to click on.
OR (this second way is probably better)
Change the .FilmStill definition by adding position: relative;
Change the .SlantedWritingFilms definition by adding position: absolute; and positioning attributes (left: 0; top: 0; for instance)
Change each .SlantedWritingFilms into a
within
.

• How do I Overlay a Logo on top of a SWF, inside an HGroup ?

Hi Folks,
I use an HGroup to within it, horizontally and vertically center a SWF.
Now, I would like to position a Logo at the HGroup's x,y=0,0 position.
While the logo need to be positioned in the top left corner, the [re]size and [re]position of SWF is not to be affected by the Logo. In effect, the logo is to have not effect on any of the layouts of whatever it visually overlays.
How do I do this?
Thanks for your help,
VC

My brain got fried with all of the previous SWFLoader positioning and centering - so much that I had to stop and clear my head and then this became an easy case of putting the HGroup and the Logo inside a BorderContainer. I had inadvertently placed the Logo inside of HBox.

• Loading a SWF inside another SWF question

Hello friends,
1. (IMPORTANT) As all we know when putting some Flash SWF
inside an HTML page, normally it starts playing as soon as its
first frame is loaded.
Now in my case I have to load a SWF (let call it Flash A)
inside another Flash, I used mx.controls.Loader control to do this.
But this internal loaded SWF (Flash A) doesn't display untill it is
completely loaded. Although what is interesting is that if it
contains a sound track I can hear it while it is being loaded.
I wana know is there any way that we can make this Flash
display while being still loaded.
2. Is there anyway to change a Flash playback FPS at runtime?
Thank you so much for any note and help.

• Embedding swf into HTML+JS AIR app

Hi
I'm trying to embed swf into HTML+JS AIR app with no luck.
First, I created flash library with this class in default package.
package
import mx.controls.Alert;
public class Utilities
public function Utilities()
//asdfasdf
Alert.show("asdasd","");
Then I compiled the project with Flash Builder and got library.swc as result. Then I extracted swf file.
After this is added required code into my html:

Then after I run application, I get error that result of expression is not constructor, function etc.
Could you help me please? Thanks in advance.

No. I mean that the Flex framework makes certain assumptions about the environment it is running in -- like having a stage to work with. The Alert function, for example, works by creating a sprite and adding it to the Flash display list. Since your embedded SWF is not on a stage, there's no way for it to work.
You can can possibly use certain non-visual parts of the framework, such as the rpc package, but I can't guarantee it.

• Embedding Flex applications inside a portlet question

I'm trying to embed a Flex application within a Java portlet on my WLP 10.3.2 portal. I'm able to display the Flex app in the portlet but now I'm trying to access data. Does anyone know of any documents that cover how to access Flex data from a portlet and how to access portlet data from the embedded Flex application?
thanks

When you mentioned you integrated Flex App inside a Portlet, are you using like iFrame tag or Browser Portlet where in iFrame tag you specify the Flex app url like that. If so, then you will not be able to share any data/information between this iFrame portlet and the actual other real portlets.
If these Flex app has something like JSR based Flex portlets, then you can integrate them in WLP more easily. Another option is to consume these Flex Portlets as remote portlets using WSRP on WLP Side and the producer will be Flex Portal App (with flex portlets).

• Write data to SharePoint from embeded Flex swf

I am trying to integrate Flex 3 applications into SharePoint 2007 environment which would allow our users to read/write/delete data from SharePoint using an embeded Flex app inside SharePoint. While the article from matthew.meier on "Adding Event Driven Flex Components to Microsoft Sharepoint 2007" is great and another article by Serge van den Oever on "Use Flex to retrieve data from a SharePoint list" is fantastic, they neither touch the topics of writing or inserting data into SharePoint. My goal is to create a two-way communication between Flex and SharePoint to dynamically pull (read) data into Flex from SharePoint lists, etc via GUID or other method AND to also write or update SharePoint from a front-end Flex inside SharePoint.

I have been working on a solution which appears like it would work, but I am getting errors. The source code and examples are found on Code Project http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/FlexASPWebService.aspx?msg=3270246#xx3270246xx This Flex/ASP example uses a web service to communicate to a SQL database. Flex makes a web service call to the .asmx file via WSDL and the magic happens. I am running into a roadblock as I receive an error that the app cannot find the WSDL. I have tried to run the same WSDL URL in a browser and I get an server application error.
I also tried a solution found at http://shardulbartwal.wordpress.com/2008/03/20/import-web-servicewsdl-wizard-in-flex-30/ to load the WSDL file directly into Flex, but I ran into another roadblock. When I get to this step below Flex gives an error that it cannot find the WSDL file either…
Here is the WebService call from Flex…
The files from Code Project contain a directory structure as such:
TestWebService\Service.asmx
TestWebService\Web.config
TestWebService\App_Code
TestWebService\App_Code\Service.cs
TestWebService\App_Data
The Service.cs file is inside the App_Code directory and is referenced from the Service.asmx file with this code:
My Flex file calls the Service.asmx?WSDL which then calls the file Service.cs and then it breaks.
The Code for the Flex file is as follows…
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" creationComplete="init()">
<mx:Script>

• How do I keep the action created in Flash (.fla) the same when published in .swf or .html?

I created a complex fixed line and a bird flying on the line using tweens from point A to B to C. When I view the birdline in play or by scrubbing across them in the layers mode, the bird follows the line just as designed. When I test the birdline in "test Scene" or "test movie" one bird flies from point A to C, then another bird appears at point B and flies the course to point C. The published .swf and .html do the same as the test functions. What can I do to get the published version to behave the same as the design?

Rob,
Thanks for your response. There are no error messages in the test functions, and no alerts in the keyframes. They show green.
Attached you will find both the .fla file and the .swf file. I am new at this, so your help is greatly appreciated.

PS- I am sitting in Sweden right now. So I am off to bed and will be back on line in the morning. Please forgive the delay in my response.

• Having stopped audio with a swf inside a sidelet can someone create a swf that will resume the audio

Ok, rick is going to post the fla of this file and I will
post the swf. Basically this is all about having a slide that has
audio running all the way through and enabling the user to roll
over a sidelet and have the video and audio stop playback.
At present, the max you can achieve is, to stop video. The
audio keeps going and of course everything gets out of
sync. Rick has create a swf that you input into a sidelet (
after having imported your image or video ) which stops the audio.
Fantasitc. Unfortunatly he was not successful in creating a swf
that will resume the audio.
So there is the mission. To create something that will resume
the audio, be it a swf inside the sidelet or something else.

Hi there paul. Am I right in thinking that your code will
mute the audio. In my situation this would cause problems becasue
you would roll over the sidelet - the audio would go silent and
when you rolled off, or resumed the audio, it would have been
playing so again the video and audio will be out of sync.
Rick - rather than another swf which would activate the audio
and video when you roll off the sidelet ( while that is the perfect
solution ) what about looking at a button the user can press to
resume things, maybe Im wrong but that sounds a little easier.
( however for all those reading this that is not really the
solution I am looking for, what Im looking for is the above
solution where you can just roll off and on and so on )

• Load and resize a SWF inside a MC

Hi,
I'm using AS2 to load an SWF inside an MC. The MC measures
800x600, while the SWF (which can vary in size) measures in this
case 14x60, even though, looking at it, it seems to be about half
the size of the hosting MC. This makes me think that the dimension
scales are different. I'm loading the SWF using MovieClipLoader and
I'd like to resize it so that it fits as proportionally snug as
possible within the MC. How can I do this? If I try to resize the
SWF to the MC's dimensions, it become way too large and goes off
screen. If instead I try to rescale the hosting MC to fit around
the SWF, the SWF itself rescales as well. I'm going nuts! How can
accomplish this?
Thank you,
Tatiana

To make things simple, I'd like to take an existing SWF (the
picture) and load it into a FIXED SIZED MC (the frame) and I'd like
to rescale the SWF so that it fits perfectly into the frame.
By all means, I know that what you said should work and I
admit my inexperience with AS2, but somehow the SWF's I'm loading
in, have scales that are totally different with respect to my
Stage. I even tried loading the SWF directly onto the stage and
then I loaded the frame separately onto the stage and tried to
resize it to the SWF's _width and _height. The frame became a tiny
dot on the screen, while the SWF filled half of my Stage.
Thanks again for your help.
