Playback dropped frames - worst when re-starting computer

I'm editing a short 3 minute project - DV-NTSC sequence - and am getting those **** occasional dropped frames during playback (not in the same place) and cannot figure it out for the life of me.
I'm new to editing and am using FCE HD 3.5
New mbp 15" 2.16, 2 Gig Ram, 160 hard drive
10.4.9
Seagate 400gb ext. drive (325gb free, FW800, Mac OS Extended, journaling off) built by OWC (Mercury Elite Pro al) w/ media, waveforms, thumbnails, etc
Settings: Safe RT, Dynamic video quality, Full frame rate, Real-time Audio Mixing to 4 tracks - low quality playback.
Canvas/viewer etc are not overlapping. Am viewing at "fit to window" size
Easy setup - DV NTSC - and all my media is DV/DVCPro - NTSC, with 48khz, 16-bit audio. Some files are anamorphic and I've changed distort and motion to make them fit 4:3.
Activity monitor shows FCE using 20-36% of CPU during playback.
Energy Saver set to Never sleep computer, Never sleep display, don't sleep hard disks, no screensaver - and am running Spindownfix. Universal Access is off. Firevault not enabled. No other programs are running
I am new to editing so please let me know if doing this could be the culprit: in some places have 3 tracks of video overlapping - not because i need to but out of laziness; in others have 3 overlapping video with a lot of keyframes adjusting opacity. ALSO: Am setting Au dynamics processor for lots of the audio - and also changing the level db in the stereo track for the same audio - should I be making these changes in the au dynamics filter instead?
Also, problem seems to be worse when I first re-start the computer - and tends to get better as I go along....?? (I assume its okay to restart my mbp without unmounting my external drive? - that it does that automatically?)
I am rendering everything (although isn't it supposed to play without dropping frames without doing so?) At one point, my project wouldn't let me render portions of audio (they were marked red, but nothing would happen when I tried render all audio or mix down etc). I trashed my preferences and that seemed to fix that problem.
I feel like I've tried everything. I'd really appreciate any advice. (Since the problem isn't all that frequent, should I consider just taking off the "report dropped frames" warning until I'm closer to a final cut?) This is a new machine, so if its a hardware problem i definitely want to get it fixed sooner than later. Thanks!

The first thing I'd try is to mixdown audio (alt-cmd-R), and see what happens.
In addition I wouldn't leave overlapping clips unused in the tracks, even though I'm not sure it makes much difference.

  • Playback drops frame rate when context menu opens

    Hello,
I was wondering why is frame rate of the video drops when I open the context menu, the playback seems to go down as much as 5fps, and it goes back to normal when the context menu is closed.
    Thanks in advance.

lghtanddrk, if you send me a link to your AVCHD MTS file, I can trying exporting it as a MOV file and see if I get the same issue. For me QT seems to be slowing no matter what HD file I give it.
What camera did you use to shoot your footage and how big is the AVCHD file? What's the data rate of your MP4/H.264 file? Again, if it's possible to get some of your MP4 footage, I can check if I have problems playing it.
I have two partions on my machine: one is WinXP SP2 without the updates and QT7.3.1 (for Avid XPress Pro) and the other has WinXP SP3 with all the updates and QT7.6.4 (I think that's the latest one). So, I can try on both to see if there are issues.
When you export as DV AVI, are you exporting as a SD (720x480?). I know that HD is square pixels and SD is non-square. The HD is 16x9 and the SD is 4:3. You could try and export your AVI as 720x540 square pixels or 720x480 non-square i.e. NTSC (CCIR 601) or try exporting as 854x480 square pixels to give your original 16x9 widescreen at SD resolution. I haven't looked at this stuff for a while, so, I'm kind of guessing here!

  • Drop frame rate when start saving avi file with GigE basler camera

    Hello all,
I use 2 Ace basler GigE cameras at 60 fps to capture animal locomotion. I experience randomly this kind of problem. When I start to record by a start/stop button and save the videos in the hard-disk sometime the frame rate drop to 20-14 fps and a skip 2 or 3 frame. After that the frame rate became stable to 60 fps.
These are the overall settings and spec of the program:
    - I use a producer/consumer loop (I never experienced a filling of the queue even when the drop frame rate occur)
    - I fixed the bandwidth of the Intel 100 GigE card to 500 for each camera
    - size of packet sent = 8000
    - firewall disabled
    - vi execution in highest mode
I observed that the dropping of the frame rate occur when the vi run for a while without interaction with the operator (the operator set others parameters in another computer, so the vi only acquire the videos without saving them)
    I have attached the vi
    Thank you for your help

    Alex,
Does this drop in frame rate occur with both cameras or does it only occur with the "left" or "right" camera acquisition loops.  I think what is happening is that your producer loop is overwriting the images before they get written to the AVI.  In addition there may be some memory conflicts as queues are generally not recommended for IMAQ Images.  Here is an explanation stating that instead of enqueuing an Image Object you are actually enqueuing a memory location to an image.   This means that when you produce a new image it is writing to the same memory location you are trying to read from when you write the frame to AVI.  This forum offers a possible workaround.

  • Dropped Frame Errors When Time Remapping DVCPRO HD 720p60 Clips

Wondering if this is common due to FW800 throughput limitations or abnormal behavior.
I'm editing several DVCPROHD 720p60 projects and cutting them in FCStudio is like butter on a Dual 2 G5 connected to a FW800 G-Raid. I needed to time remap a clip and lo and behold, some dropped frame errors. Recreated and retimed several times with the same error. Dropping down the playback quality fixes this but wondering if it would be a normal occurance to see this with DVCPRO HD footage.
    Any thoughts?
    Dual 2 G5, 17 & 15 PB   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Monitors, G-Raids, and Cameras, oh my!

It may be normal... a lot depends on which machine you're using, but If it drops frames, render it...

  • Multiclip Playback Dropped Frames

I am MultiClip editing 3 ProRes streams and getting the dreaded "RT....Dropped Frames" message every 5-10 seconds. Have followed the standard protocol (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226192) for this and problem continues.
    Details:
-24" iMac 4GB Ram w/ plenty of HD space
-Clips were logged/transferred onto iMac HD (no external)
-Completed 2.5 hour multiclip last week, 3 streams, with only a handful of dropped frames issues
-Current project has been tried on 2 identical iMacs and a new fully loaded MacBook Pro and the issue is the same on all 3 machines.
Have read Shane Ross post/response at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226192
Questions for Shane and Other Experts:
Is it likely that because my iMac HD is Journaled, I should be using an external?
Is this problem a playback issue or a capture issue?
What do you advise? Please help!
    Thanks!
    S. Brown

    Shane's rule #1
    1) Do not capture to your main system drive.
That drive has enough to do just operating the OS and FCP...then you expect it to perpetually read 3 streams of media?
It may work for awhile, but as you're finding out, things eventually bog down.
    Get an external.
Journaling may slow things very slightly, but you should have your system drive journaled...(but not necessary on an external)
It's only a capture issue if your media format doesn't match your sequence settings. This sounds like a throughput issue.

  • DVCPRO50 multicam playback: dropped frames

I'm having trouble with multicam group playback (5 cameras) in FCP - Dropped-Frame Error. Individual clips playdown fine, only groups drop-frames.
    Stats:
    G5 Quad 2.5 - 4GB
    OS 10.4.3
    FCP 5.0.3
    G-RAID 1000GB
source footage: DVCPRO50 @ full resolution
Could it be the 5 cameras @ full-rez giving the G-RAID a hard time?

I'd think so. DVCPRO 50 is 8-bit, and the G-Raid handles 3-4 streams of 8-bit, and you are asking it for 5 streams. For this I'd think you'd need a SATA Raid.

  • "Dropped Frames" error when capturing to Drobo external drive

Hi, I am looking to buy another external hard drive for video editing with Final Cut (as my scratch disk). I had purchased a Drobo because of the data redundancy and ease of use, but it's definitely NOT an editing drive - way too slow, I can't even capture video to it without getting "dropped frames" errors (even w/Firewire 800). And after searching these forums, I've read that others have experienced the same problems and that in the end it turns out that the Drobo is not an editing drive. Jeez, that was an expensive learning experience.
Soooooo I'm not very knowledgeable on hard drives, RAID, etc... but I would like to buy something that has redundancy (would that be RAID??) but is absolutely HAS to be something I can capture video and edit on. I know some people have bought 2 drives, one for editing and one for backup, but I know I'd forget to back it up every time and it seems like a bit of a hassle. Just thinking there's got to be an easier way that's hopefully not too expensive.
Are there any editors here who can point me to specific hard drive models or tell me exactly what I need to look for in a drive? I believe OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/) probably has what I need, I just don't know what it is I need to get since I'm hard drive ********. Any advise would be appreciated!

Thank you Shane. Wow, didn't realize how expensive that would be. Not an option for me at the moment then.
That said, is there another hard drive (non-RAID) that is good for editing? For instance, could I use a Western Digital MyBook (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000VZCEU8/ref=ordcartshr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) to do my editing and then have another one for backup? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I understand and get this right!
    Thanks

  • Final Cut Pro 5 playback - dropped frames

Just completed a complex 1 hour timeline and dropped frames occur after a matter of seconds. Clips running in viewer - same thing. Tried to burn a dvd: Quick Time movie conversion produces a badly fragmented result and the FCP compressor hangs in 'waiting'mode. Both external hard drive (e-sata link) and Mac's drive have loads of space and I've tried all the tricks in Lisa Brenneis' book. Any ideas, anyone?

    Brian ,
What format is your original media and what format are you exporting to in quicktime conversion.
A few more details needed please.

  • Using cs3. Clips dropping frames.  When I import m2t video from my focus inhancements fs-4hd

The 2 gb. limit creates several clips and the clips don't join together correctly. the end of each clip is missing 4 frames of audio and 1 frame of video. This makes it impossible to sync to video tracks together. Am I alone with this problem? Would Cs5 correct it?

Yes exactly.  Using the original files to edit with can make your editing process verrryy slow especially on a laptop.
Forget about H.264 for editing- a good codec for other purposes but not for editing in Final Cut.
Don't worry about losing image quality when you import and transcode into ProRes  - you aren't 'sacrificing' image quality, you're only converting (transcoding) into this codec to edit with-- to make editing faster and more efficient on your CPU... This is what he means by that.  The original files will still be there - don't worry they won't be slaughtered
ProRes is the most FCP friendly codec for editing - it's an Apple codec that gives you high playback quality without using a ton of CPU, and was pretty much designed for FCP. You should find that transcoding your material into this codec will eliminate the sluggishness you've described.
FCPX gives you the option for ProRes optimized or ProRes proxy when you import your media - both are good for your purposes, but proxy is probably the best for you since you are on a laptop .  Fastest to edit with, with slightly less image quality (again - only while editing!)
Then, whenever you're done editing and are ready to export back into high quality - just go into your preferences menu and click Original/optimized media and it will switch over for you.  You can then export in high quality.
FCPX as much as I hate it - makes the transcoding procress very easy.
    good luck.
the original media will still be retained, all you have to do is click a button when you are done editing and export your project with high quality media at the very end.

  • HD Playback - Dropping Frames

    Hey all,
When playing back the IMAX: Deep Sea HD trailer, the average FPS is 23-24, but drops to 15-20 during heavier scenes (in example, the school of fish during the opening 20 seconds).
When playing back Warren Miller's Higher Ground trailer, the FPS is averaging at around 12.
I thought my system would be adequate for HD playback, is there anything I can do to get a solid 24 FPS?
    Dual 2ghz G5/1.5gb/sata 150 7200rpm drives
    Radeon 800xt (256mb) / 30" cinema display
    Quicktime 7.0.4
No other applications running when attempting to play movies.
    Any ideas would be welcome!
    Cheers.

Indeed there is still some mystery to this.. I'm curious as to how the new Dual Core machines fair with these trailers.
Is 9mb/s really over the top, though, in this day and age? I'm quite surprised that both of our Powermac systems failed miserably to put on a good show with the Warren trailers, especially your dual 2.5 beast!
If I mark this as 'solved' prematurely, may we pick it up again at a later date, if I'm still experiencing problems?
After all, in a way we have an answer to my original question, although I expect we're both unhappy about the results.

  • 10 frames replay when scrolling starts

    Hello,
Can't figure what is happening. When I insert a scrolling track - precisely at that point - the video jogs back 10 frames and those frames are repeated. The jerking effect is painfully visible when I play the sequence back. Nothing I've tried seems to have any effect. I've deleted and reinserted the clip many times. I've even tried cutting out the extra 10 frames and closing the "gap", but when I do the 10 frame duplication just appears at another spot. On the video track, when I'm at the scrolling cut, I get the yellow right-angle symbol at bottom right on the last full frame of the continuous video. The next frame after the 10 frame jog back has that little yellow right-angle on bottom left - if that's of any help.
Any clues what's going on? Any suggestions for a work around?
    Thanks.
    John

    Michael,
Thanks for the reply. But before I try what you've suggested here is the letter I was in the midst of writing a few hours ago before I was called out of the house. It may add a different complexion to my problem.....
Actually thinking on it more, I'm wondering if this phenomena I'm seeing doesn't relate to something else unusual I noticed in this project.
Some weeks back I noticed something unusual about the way a certain cut played in the Timeline/Canvas. I had carefully cut one shot so that it would end on a closing door, mid-frame. The position of that door in that frame would land on a desk in the next shot. But when I'd play these two shots together in the sequence, I'd notice the edge of the closing door would go far past the desk on the next shot it was supposed to draw the eye's attention to.
What was happening? Why was the Timeline sequence playing frames past the cut on my clip? I checked the clip, and the out point was exactly where I wanted it to be. And when I looked at the clip in the Timeline it ended at the right point. Yet, when I played the sequence I'd get these – well I realize now – ten extra frames.
I'd found my solution – well at least a temporary one - to this problem. I went back to my clip, pushed the out point back ten frames, and the result on playback was as I wanted. I know this wasn't a real solution. For how, I wondered, would the sequence/film play when I exported it? Would it be true to the actual clip/Timeline cut, or would it play as it has been with those extra frames added? It was a problem I knew I was going to have to face and fully solve later.
Guess now is later, for it seems to me that this is exactly the phenomena I'm experiencing at the moment when the scrolling text enters. Only here I don't have the chance of my earlier “work-around”. In that instance I was dealing with the end of a clip so I  could make the adjustments I've described. In the case of the superimposed scrolling clip the “phenomena”, the “jog”, the “stutter” is happening in the middle of a clip.
So I guess, as I'm seeing it now, the problem of the scrolling text is really the same as I've described above. Right now I'd suspect it's just another example of cutting two shots together where for some reason the second shot is “requiring” an extra ten frames of the last shot/clip to play.
Wow! Got me baffled. This got anything to do with Handles? Got anything to do with ProRes 422 (HQ)? I've never edited in that compression format before and must admit in many years editing in FC have never knowingly experienced this “lag” phenomena.
Weird! But it is something I have to figure out, if not just for the sake of saving the clip in discussion, but also to make sure that in the end of it all I won't be exporting a project where every cut will be adding ten frames to the cut before it.
    John

  • ITunes keeps opening when I start computer

can anyone help with the answer;  same applies to iPhoto and iCal.

There may be two causes for the apps reopening:
either iTunes and others are added to your login items
or they were running when you logged out and are started again by Lion's "Resume Feature" when you login.
To remove the Login items: Open the System Preferences -> System-> Users and Groups, click the Login items tab and deselect any Applications that you do not want to open at login.
To avoid the automatic resume of applications:
When logging out deselect "restore application windows". If you want to deactivate "Resume" once and forever follow these instructions. http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/13/turn-off-resume-the-definitive-solution/ by billearl
