Playbook reinstalled the OS instead of updated it

Hi, I've been having trouble connecting my playbook to my PC ever since I installed Windows 8. When I ran the Blackberry desktop software it gave me the option to update the Playbook OS. I did this but the install froze on me so after a few hours I unplugged the playbook. However -- and here's what I need help with -- when I turned on my playbook again it acted as though it was the first time I used it. Evidently it seems to have totally reinstalled the OS (version 2.1.0.1753) instead of updating it ---- meaning that I have lost my files and apps. Is there any way to access the information that I have lost? And why would this have happened in the first place?

unless you have a backup the info is lost
how did it happen, there is a question that askes about updating it when not connected and usualyl gives warning all will be erased and maybe you didnt see that pert and just choose next

Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.

When I chose my macintosh hard disk to install it on, my installer said it can't be installed. That this volume does not meet the requirements for this update. I've tried deleting the Genius information, reinstalling it, as well as even reinstalling the latest Snow Leopard update but nothing seems to work. What can I do?

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
     computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
     screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
     Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

HT6172 Server Update v3.1.1: How does one get past the Updating Services screen: "The server is being updated on this Mac"?

Upon opening Server after the update has installed, it simply hangs for hours on end (more than 5 hours) on the above screen, with the progress bar showing about 1/3 complete. Please help!

Did not yet completely reset the server. (It's not mine… it's from a customer so completely resetting the server is really the last thing he wants to be done…)
but I've digged deeper into the problem and the logs.
Test: renaming the .plist files mentioned in the arcticle about resetting the server
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.serverd.plist > /Library/Preferences/com.apple.serverd-old.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgrd.plist > /Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgrd-old.plist
This triggers also a 'new setup' from the server instead of 'updating services'.
And even now the configuration of the server halted on the same place in the logs!
It's always in the part with 70_calendarcommonextra.py

Then I've tried to expermiment a little bit in the /Library/Server folder with renaming some folder to see if thsi could solve the problem. (Because the folders are getting recreated with default settings and data). So I've renamed "Calendar and Contacts" and tested: No success. I've renamed "PostgreSQL" and tested: No success. …
When I read some articles about these problems most of the time the problem seems to be related to some 3th party from specific software is installed, like when someone installed another version of Python instead of using Apple's. The upgrade process does not seem to like this and freezes.
A quick look in the Downloads folder of this specific server showed an installer of pgAdmin, used to configre/control PostGreSQL databases… so -in this case- this was installed by another external company to do somehting on that server which I don't know what it does .
But for now, I've pinpointed the problem. The original PostGreS of OS X Server on this server is tampered/overwritten by another PostGreSQL and this will be the reason why the update does not work.
I have to phone that other company next week to see if they are aware of this issue, and hopefully they know how to fix this.
bottom line
reading the ServerSetup.log is the first thing to do!

I'm in a similar position to you. I have Snow Leopard, so no iCloud stuff (though iTunes tells me that my Contacts and Bookmarks should be updating over the air - not working yet). So no iCloud options on our Macs.
I guess for you, as your Mac is not getting involved, iCloud is just backing up your iPhone Contacts to iCloud (like mine).
Did you check the Contacts in the iCloud? Are they the old ones?
As it's changing the contacts, that must be the case. So…
Turn off iCloud Contacts syncing on your iPhone.
It will ask if you want to delete them. Choose delete.
Sign into iCloud online and delete them ALL.

Select all via the options cog.
Then delete all via the options cog.
iCloud Contacts all empty?… then continue.
Re-sync your iPhone with on your Mac…
…ticking the "Replace your iPhone Contacts with those on your Mac" box (bottom of Info tab).
Your correct Contacts should be back.
Next, turn on iCloud Contacts syncing on your iPhone.
Choose Merge.
Refresh the iCloud Contacts online page to check.
Hopefully all should now correct - both online and on the iPhone!

Could the 10.4.10 update change one of my wireless network settings?

I am pretty new to macs (bought first one in April) so forgive my ignorance... after installing 10.4.10 I lost my airtunes connection to my Airport Express. After reading through the terrific Apple discussions I tried resetting the Airport Express (twice) back factory defaults, repaired permissions on the mini, reset my Netgear router and reinstalled the 10.4.10 update, all to no avail. I can see the AE in iTunes on the mini, but it simply won't connect - it tries but times out. And because all along I have been able to stream music to the same AE just fine with two Windows PCs, I don't think the Express is the culprit. So, my question is, what else should I try? Is it possible that the update changed some network-related parameter?? The mini worked perfectly with the AE for three months, right up until I loaded 10.4.10. I suppose I could downgrade to 10.4.9 but to be honest I am not sure I know enough about macs to try that yet.

Yes, I am beginning to suspect something broke from the 10.4.10 update. It seems I have been forced to manually enter my router address as a DNS server in the Network Preference Panel.
Copy the "Router" address and paste it in the "DNS Servers" field, then press "Apply".
This is more of a problem for portables, since you travel and your router address will change resulting in no internet. In that case, I suggest using the OpenDNS numbers:

The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 or 10.8 is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Just for those who are interested, this is what cleared the "bookmark menu" trbl I had.
Open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Bookmarks, then reselect it.
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try a bookmark again.

Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

I had this problem too and my roommate solved it!
Go to 'Settings'
'Music'
Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
Then connect to iTunes and sync!
