Playlists have disappeared from 30GB iPod

Hello All
I've been tearing my hair out for 2 days - Googling and searching these forums and I can't seem to find a problem quite like mine. If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it!
I am running an iMac (17" C2D) with the most current iTunes (8.0.1) and Leopard (10.5.5) and a 30GB 5th Gen iPod.
I have several playlists in iTunes, sorted by genre, mood, etc. I have a LOT of video and TV shows, so all I sync is the Music and Playlists automatically, since the music will all fit. This has worked fine for 2+ years, and I haven't purchased anything from iTunes recently. Then one day I take my iPod to the gym and all of a sudden I have no playlists on the iPod! All of the music is still there - but there is NO organization.
I plug the iPod into the iMac (set up to automatically open iTunes and to automatically sync). No joy. I still have music on the iPod, but NO playlists. No playlists in the iPod, nor under the iPod entry in the Source menu in iTunes. Of note - the "default" smart playlists (such as "Music Videos" and "60s Music") are still there! None of the playlists that I have created (and been using for years) exist any more on this iPod.
I try choosing only to sync "selected playlists". No joy there - still no playlists on the iPod. I try just ONE small playlist just to make sure I'm not out of space - I'm not. I again choose "sync all music and playlists" and watch 30GB of music copy over to the iPod - without the playlists!
I do the "5 Rs" and reset and restore the iPod. Twice. No joy. Every time I restore the iPod I get to watch the music copy over - but no playlists appear!
I set up to "manually sync" and attempt to physically drag the playlist to the iPod. Nope. As soon as I let go of the mouse button, the dragged playlist simply springs back to its original place on the source menu.
I have repaired disk permissions and reset the iMac.
This behavior started after a "sneak" update from Software Update. Usually, SU pops open and notifies me of any updates - I select what I want, then I get the "you must restart..." message in order to install the updates. Well, this last time, the Software Update window never opened and I never got to see what was being updated. When I went to restart the iMac, all I got was the "press restart to install updates..." requester box (with no opportunity to see what was being installed), and silly me I restarted the iMac anyhow (stupid, I know...) trusting in my Apple Overlords (j/k!), and then all this mess started. I am guessing maybe it updated iTunes behind my back and that's what's giving me all of the problems.
Can anybody help?

And a quick follow-up (sorry!)
I found the menu item on the iPod
Settings -->Main Menu -->Playlists
and that doesn't have any effect either.
thanks in advance!
Richard

    Hello surig84,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing when syncing your iPad.  I recommend reviewing the following article specifically the section titled "Authorize using the correct account name."

  • After upgrading to iTunes 11.0.1.12 from iTunes 10, my playlists have disappeared.

After upgrading to iTunes 11.0.1.12 from iTunes 10, my playlists have disappeared. Any ideas how I can get them back? They are still on my iPhone though, even after a sync.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Itunes has sent a lot of my music into iCloud. I have not asked for this. I can't log on to icloud, since I only have an ipod. How do I get my music back? It seems to have disappeared from my computer.

itunes has sent a lot of my music into iCloud. I have not asked for this. I can't log on to icloud, since I only have an ipod. How do I get my music back? It seems to have disappeared from my computer.

I have read the the advice you gave, and I had already tried that. It did not help.
When I tried to download an album with nine songs, (I have paid for the complete album), two songs were missing. One of them has showed up/disappeared a couple of times, but with a cloud/arrow-symbol next to it, what I thought to be a symbol for downloading from the cloud. When I click it, it starts a downloading process, and then I am told it cannot be done, "please try again later".  The other song is nowhere to be seen.  The song with the cloud/arrow-symbol, I bought 3 times, once with the album, twice just the song. That didn't change matters. iTunes tells me I have downoladed all songs I have purchased.
I do not really understand why you do not understand what I am writing, I only describe what happens when I use iTunes.
If a person want to use iCloud, one needs an iPhone, iPad or an iPod Touch. That information is not given until you have downloaded and installed the iCloud program. That is why I have it on my computer, but cannot use it. To set up an iClod account, you have to connect one of the above mentioned devices. I don't have one, so I cannot do it.
If you want the (13013) problem explained, I suggest you google it. I am not the only one to have that problem.
I am thankful that you spend time on trying to help me, but I cannot explain things clearer than this.

Once you have successfully done that you can go ahead and choose Erase and Sync when you plug your iPod in.

  • Songs have disappeared from my library and Ipod.  I have found some in trash but I did not send them there.  Others have completely gone.

Hi - I have discovered that some songs have disappeared from my itunes library and Ipod. I have found some of them in trash even though I did not trash them, as they are some of my all time favourite songs.  I have now restored these trashed songs to my library/ipod.
However I cannot find some other missing songs in trash - so I have no idea where they could be! It makes me feel very insecure about itunes as a whole.  I would prefer music to diamionds - and it disturbs me when music just disappears like that!  An explanation/solution would be gratefully received.  I wonder whether I can ask Apple to pay for the items that have gone for good!

    Andrea,
have you tried to update the Ipod? If not try that, but do not restore it. If you still cannot find the songs, there is - I suppose you are using windows - a nifty little program available from Findley Designs (www.findleydesigns.com) that allows you to transfer Music from your Ipod to your PC. Download it and see if it works with one song, if it does it is about USD 14 to buy and helps if you want to transfer songs from your Ipod to your computer. If you have transferred the music to your computer you can restore your Ipod-
    Good luck
    Thomas

  • If i sync my ipod to my current apple id, will i the songs i got from a different apple id disappear from the ipod completely or will it just have all the names and details and grey?

    Hello!
So basically, I got a lot of the songs on my iPod from a different Apple ID than to the one I am currently using. I want to sync my iPod to the Apple ID I am currently using but I want to know if the songs on my iPod from the previous Apple ID will disappear off of the iPod or go all grey so that I cant select them? I know that Apple says that it will delete the songs from my old Apple ID but what I noticed is that when I've deleted songs from my iPod using iTunes in the past is that they don't disappear from the iPod, they stay there but the names go grey so that I cant select them. Basically I want to know which will happen. Sorry if this is a bit confusing...
    Thanks!

  • Why does my artwork disappear from my ipod?   It's all visible in itunes, but on the ipod nano it disappears.

Why does my artwork keep disappearing from my ipod?   It's all visible in itunes, but on the ipod nano it when I copy over new albums with artwork, the artwork on the albums already on the ipod lose theirs, although they retain the artwork if viewed through itunes.
In case it matters, I don't "sync" my "library".  I have a I have a PC and copy over directories containing albums of MP3 files by dragging them onto the ipod with itunes.  I also tried pulling over only the files and not the directories.

OK, so I decided that maybe if I "sync" my iPod instead of just copying stuff to it at will, that maybe it would fix the problem.  I did a "restore", wiping out the contents.  I set up a "playlist", and put everything that I wanted on the iPod into the "playlist".   Then I "synced" the "playlist" onto the iPod.  Every song and album now had the proper album art.  I could live with this.   Then I added another album to the "playlist", and "synced".  The new album was now on the iPod with the correct artwork.  The albums that were already on the iPod now either had their appropriate artwork, no artwork, or the artwork from the other albums that were already on the iPod, with no rhyme or reason as to which was which.  AARGH.   I wiped it out and re-added the now-explanded "playlist" and "synced" again, and every album had the right cover.   I guess the only thing to do is completely replace the contents of the iPod any time I want to add or change anything, or forget about artwork.

  • Recently added and recently played playlists have disappeared.

Hi, I have just looked at my itunes library on my Iphone 4s and noticed that my recently added and recently played playlists have disappeared. Does anyone know why this has happened and how can I get them back? Preferably without restoring my whole phone.

    Solution/work around:
Add a new smart play list.
File > New Smart Playlist. From this point a pop up will appear.
    Match following rule is selected
(Date added) - (In the last) - (2) - (weeks)
    No limit set
    No match only checked items
    Live update selected
    Then <ok>.
Change name of smart playlist to something like 'New Music' and Sync to IPhone/IPod.

    - Try resetting the iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, restore from backup.

  • HT203175 My own group of selected playlists has disappeared from my computer screen

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • "podcasts" option totally disappeared from my ipod.

The option of "podcast" (the first menu where you choose music, pictures, etc.) completely disappeared from my ipod nano. Any suggestions on how to get it back?

Do you have any podcasts synced to your Nano?  Have you checked to make sure it wasn't disabled in settings? (This may not be the case depending on the age of your Nano).  What generation is your nano?

  • All my contacts disappeared from my iPod Touch

All my contacts disappeared from my iPod Touch!
I was not syncing, I don't use the Cloud, I was just checking if i had any messages on Viber...
All of a sudden, Viber didn't display any names any more, so I checked my contacts, and it just displays that my contacts are empty...
Is there any way of getting them back?
    Thx for your answers!!

Restore from backup. See the restoring topic of:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iTunes backup
To help prevent the last backup from being overwritten and thus erasing the Messages from the last backup turn off autosyncing so that you have to overtly start a sync. To turn off go iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check the box that says "Prevent iPods...".
