Help:
I need you to tell me what features your ideal source code editor (with some project management tools built in) would have. Tell me anything, however big, however infeasible, or however trivial.
Background:
I'm starting work this summer on a major project, set to last until the summer of 2004 (2 years), during the course of which I plan to develop an advanced text editor (with project management tools), written in Java, that will be built from the ground up differently from any other. It will be freeware on release.
Features:
The software will be able to handle HTML/XML/Java/Prolog/LISP/C/C#/Perl languages and plain text, and will support plug-ins for other languages.
In the course of developing it, I want to experiment with novel features, built-in project management tools, support for numerous programming languages, different ways of viewing, editing and presenting the project/code, and the application of the latest AI research.
I also want to build a 'concept' GUI (as in 'concept car), that will be rather unlike any other application around at the moment and will be designed from the start to follow all the latest theory on user psychology, behaviour and preferences.
I have dozens of ideas for this, which sadly I need to keep mostly under wraps for the time being. However, this project is intended to create from scratch an entirely new text editor using user-centred design, and I need to know what all you novice and experienced users want.
Timeline:-----------------------------------------------
Prototypes expected by Xmas 2002.
First beta likely to appear late Summer 2003.
Successive betas to be followed by release
candidates around about Xmas 2003.
Final release to appear early Spring 2004.
Update Summer 2004.
(All these releases will be freeware)
As you can tell from the schedule, this is a serious project, and I hope I can produce a piece of (initially) freeware that will benefit everyone...
Thanks for the help!

same as jgitnick's comments, but I also like the features where your objects are displayed in dropdowns along with properties and methods.
version control and history are essential as are color coding identifiers, comments, etc... The version history should be easily accessable--I've used several tools that had versioning control, but then didn't let you access the history--what was the point?
Ability to set tabs and tab characters replaced by spaces (spaces inserted instead of tabs) for each tab used--this lead to a 3am coding chrisis when I was in college because the tab character was not supported well as white space by a compiler we used for one semester.
scope designator matching {} ()
replaceable character sets (support for multiple human languages).

    ..i dont have jspI did not mention JSP. Pure J2SE code can produce HTML, though if done in a web-app., it would generally be done using JSP or Servlets.
    Here is an example of producing HTML in J2SE.
    import javax.swing.*;
    class HtmlTable {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              int[][] values = {
                   {1,3894,5387},
                   {2,4112,4459},
                   {3,4886,6076}
              String prefix = "<html><body><table>\n";
              final StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(prefix);
              sb.append("<tr>");
              sb.append("<th>");
              sb.append("Month");
              sb.append("</th>");
              sb.append("<th>");
              sb.append("Unit A<br>Sales");
              sb.append("</th>");
              sb.append("<th>");
              sb.append("Unit B<br>Sales");
              sb.append("</th>");
              sb.append("</tr>\n");
              for (int ii=0; ii<values.length; ii++) {
                   sb.append("<tr>");
                   for (int jj=0; jj<values[ii].length; jj++) {
                        sb.append("<td>");
                        sb.append("" + values[ii][jj]);
                        sb.append("</td>");
                   sb.append("</tr>\n");
              sb.append("</table>");
              sb.append("</body>");
              sb.append("</html>");
              Runnable r = new Runnable() {
                   public void run() {
                        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(
                             null,
                             new JTextArea(sb.toString(),20,10) );
                        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(
                             null,
                             new JLabel(sb.toString()) );
              SwingUtilities.invokeLater(r);
    As an aside, those terms are HTML (an abbreviation) Java (a proper name) & JSP (an abbreviation). Please try to use correct upper/lower case when using technical terms.

  • Is there a way to open a remote port programmatically in java code

    Hi,
    I'm trying to open a remote port which is closed by the windows firewall in a java code. I want to know weather this is possible?
    If yes, tell me a way to do this?
    Thanks.
    Buddhika

    Because, that port should be kept closed and I want to open it when i need it in runtime. Also i have full privileges to access that remote machine. So i >want to change the firewall setting while application running.Can't you have a application running on the remote PC that makes use of two ports, and Admin port and a General port?
    The Admin port will be created on startup and use some authentation to make sure that a the application that connects to it will have admin rights
    Use that application to tell the "Server" to open and close the General port.

    Java code compiles slower than C/C++ one may ask why
    would we need Java?It runs slower. No one cares about compile time.
    >
    Java code compiles not into Native code like other
    languages, this is the main reason it runs slower but
    is the same reason Java is portable and secure.
    That point needs more explaination. Security has many meanings and in some circumstances native code will be considered more secure.
    >
    Java is less expensive than .NET and other languages
    to use, with Java you pay a one off lisence fee
    rather than such as Microsoft who charge annual
    subscription.
    Not sure what you meant there.
    MS charges for the IDE. Sun charges for their IDE as well. The compiler is free from both however.

  • I want to use £ in euro in java code

    Hi,
    I want to use &pound; as euro symbol in java code please help me as soon as possible.

    It's not 100% clear what you are asking:
    I want to use &pound; as euro symbol in java codeDo you mean you want to display a Euro symbol? If so, you use &euro; (if your font supports it) but I suspect that is too easy you must mean something else. Can you ask the question again but rephrase to make it clearer what you want to do. Do you want to use the symbol in a particular Java component?

  • Short code causes a strange problem - About the list again -- please read!

    Hi again people. Maybe you remember my project - has a list, that you can search thru using a text field. During the work I got stuck on a strange problem ( Again :-( ) My app has one text field, one combo box, one list and a text field once more. The code should do the following ->
    *1. Load the list, no problem with that.*
    *2. Show the elements of the list, that match the selected group in the combo box,no problem.*
    *3. Search thru the list using the text field,no problem.*
    4. When the user selects an element from the list, it should display its info in the second text field. This also works fine, but when after looking at info of one of the elements the things on numbers 2 and 3 ( look up! ) stop working. I must say that everything works fine until user selects an element from the list. I couldnt understand this kind of behavior so I am asking you to help me please.

    Keith, thanks for making that readable. So here's the diagnosis -
    In the refresh() method, calling defaultListModel.clear() results in a valueChanged(...) event in which this method calldefaultListModel.getElementAt(list.getSelectedIndex())results in the exception noted, as getSelectedIndex returns -1, the list being empty... you can't getElementAt(-1).
    I haven't analyzed all the code nor checked whether is now works as desired, but this small change to valueChanged counters the exception being thrown.   public void valueChanged(ListSelectionEvent e) {

    Yea! You were right! I didnt think that calling *list_model.clear();* will result in calling *valueChanged()* ........
    That was some *clear()* thinking :-) Thank you!

    http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/ABAP/AdapterModuleToReadExcelFilewithMultipleRowsandMultiple+Columns
    but here in this wiki , given java code is for pi 7.0 and it is using jar file from PI 7.0
    I tried with using corresponding PI 7.1 files
    com.sap.aii.af.lib.mod.jar:
    sap.comtcloggingjavaimpl.jar:
    com.sap.aii.af.svc_api.jar:
    com.sap.aii.af.cpa.svc_api.jar:
    com.sap.aii.af.ms.ifc_api.jar:
    jave program is not throwing any error in NWDS but After deploying file on server.
    i am getting this errot in communication channel

    Being picky, that's not C++, that's C. Standard headers in C++ dont' have .h after them, loop variables are scoped with the for, you use constants rather than #defines, etc..
    C and C++ both don't initialise arrays by default; you'd have to write an initialiser to get it to zero out the array:
        int s[sz][sz] = {};gcc will insert a call to memset to zero the array.
    If the author was assuming that the array was zeroed out, there would be no point zeroing the first row and column.
    The code reads values which haven't been initialised. If you mark such values explicitly undefined, and change the program to report an error when undefined, then you get several cases where the program makes such report.
    So either it' s a primitive random number generator (some random number generators use uninitialised memory as a source of randomness), or it's buggy, or it's processing undefined data and throwing away the result. Either way, it cannot be directly be ported to Java if the undefined values (which are limited to a small area of the ouput) are significant.

  • Read SSH (Unix) dynamic file through Java code

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a java code which should read the dynamically changing content in the unix(SSH) system.
    Could you please tell me which is the best way to create the above requirement.
    Thanks in advance...

I feel a mashup delegate layer coming on.JCraft's JSch is, however, IMHO, a very good, flexible, and reliable implementation of SSH2 protocol (OpenSSH key formats). It allows your program to become an SSH client.
    Edit: And to tell you the truth, the Perl Net::SSH module is simply a wrapper around OpenSSH's libraries, and the Net::SSH::Perl Module (which is complete Perl although many of the Encryption modules need to be compiled, at least on Unix) are much more complicated to get installed, if not necessarily used, than JSch is.

  • Please help how to get return array from rpg program on java code?

    Hi
    I have created a rpg program that returns 2 parameter 1 is the id and another one is list of array, when I called this program I passed two programparameter from my java code (see the code below) but when i checked what value would be return it is returned only first value of array. how will i get all array values ?
    please suggest me regarding this issues I amn't so much aware on java & AS400.
    try
    ProgramParameter[] parmList = new ProgramParameter[2];
    AS400Text p1 = new AS400Text(10);
    AS400Text p2 = new AS400Text(30);

    parmList[0].setParameterType(ProgramParameter.PASS_BY_REFEREN CE);
    parmList[1].setParameterType(ProgramParameter.PASS_BY_REFEREN CE);
    parmList[0].setInputData(p1.toBytes("Pune"));
    parmList[1].setInputData(p2.toBytes(" "));

    Try this :
    try
    ProgramParameter[] parmList = new ProgramParameter[2];
    AS400Text p1 = new AS400Text(10);
    AS400Text p2 = new AS400Text(30);
    AS400Array arrP2 = new AS400Array(p2, 4);
    try
    parmList[0] = new ProgramParameter(10);
    parmList[1] = new ProgramParameter(30);
    parmList[0].setParameterType(ProgramParameter.PASS_BY_REFEREN CE);
    parmList[1].setParameterType(ProgramParameter.PASS_BY_REFEREN CE);
    parmList[0].setInputData(p1.toBytes("Pune"));
    parmList[1].setInputData(arrP2.toBytes({"","","",""}));
    catch(Exception ex)
    ProgramCall pgm = new ProgramCall(o);
    pgm.setProgram("/QSYS.LIB/XXX/XXX.PGM",parmList);
    if (pgm.run())
         Object[] objArr =  (Object [])arrP2.toObject( parmList[1].getOutputData() );
         for(int i =0; i<objArr.length;i++){

    Normally I would be happy to help you, but after several years of trying to help here, I've decided not to contribute anymore because of the piss-poor way in which this site is being administered.
    Others are still helping, but more may leave if things don't improve. May I recommend devshed or javaranch?

  • JPDA - I want to System.out the linenumber of my written Java Code.

    If the subject is not clear (Wich it isnt i am sure) I try to refrase it.
    I want to run an little debugger wich all it does is:
    --have a next button, so you can skip to the next instruction.
    --gives me the linenumber of the code the current instruction is on at any given time.
    Is there a little example that would show me how I would do that? I am really lost here...
    Any help is highly appreciated

    Thank you very much for that info...
    I managed to run it. However, it still runs in a shell. Is there a way, to relink the input and output streams so I can manage to leave the shell aside? All I need to do ist stop at the first instruction, and then use the step function over and over again...
    Acctually why dont I explain exactly what I want to do??? Ok here we go...
    My program layout:
    I. first I write some java code in my text area (A)
    II. Then I Hit the compile button. The code gets compiled and the class is loaded into the Execution Area.
    III. The Execution Area consists out of a pane on witch a little LoveBug can move around. Depending on the programm the Bug takes different actions. (e.g. while(noTreeInFront) move one step forward )
      Text area         A                   Execution Area         B
                         -                                           -
    ...
    ...while (bla){           COMPILE   \
           do something();===============>          --->

    ...    ---------------
            comp  step
    ------------------------                ------------------------------My problem now is, that I dont only want the user to see what the little LoveBug is doing in the Execution Window, but also I want him to see where exactly in the code he is!!!!!!!!!
    My guess was to use some debug-mechanics to find out on what line in the code the program currently is on. but of course I cant use a shell for that task.
    So my question: How would I solve such a problem????
    Thanks in advance...
