Plist file and loss of existing mail

I deleted the plist files in an attempt to clean things up. From reading other posts in other discussion forums I thought it would be ok to delete these files as they only have to do with preferences, and by deleting them it may prevent problems with imovie/idvd.
Turns out that my mail account has been altered back to a .mac account that no longer exists as it was only a trial version at the time I purchased my mac. My question is how do I get my old email account back so when I open mail, it opens using the mail account from my DSL service provider?
If anyone has ideas, I'd loke to hear from you. Thanks in advance... Carl

Doesn’t typing trash in Mail Help’s search box return any useful information? It looks like you’ve changed settings that are explained in the relevant Mail Help articles and that you haven’t provided. What are your Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Trash settings?
Have you deleted any message from those accounts? Mail does’t create some of the mailboxes it manages automatically until actually needed to store messages in them...

The idea is, if another app which I have tries to connect to 127.0.0.1:8585 that my test app will launch and do its stuff. The test app is the server and the guy making the call is the client.
The plist file is located in "/Library/LaunchDaemons" and is owned by root and only readable by anyone but root. Similarly TestApp is only readable/executable by root and no one else can do anything. Finally TestApp is a C++ program not an actual application ie:TestApp.app/Contents/etc...
If it were windows, it would be TestApp.exe.
Anyway, when I invoke my other program, TestApp isn't launched. (I rebooted after I put the plist file in so it would be read). I know TestApp and TestClient can talk, if I run them both myself everything is fine. I just want to get launchd to do it on demand. There isn't a clear way for me to debug this because if there is an error, I do not know where to look to see it, if any such errors are reported. Syslog doesn't show anything of interest in this reguard.
    Any help is greatly appricated.

    Hello Mark:
You are seeing a "normal" behavior, if this is the case on the load of a first report. Subsequent reports should be significantly faster. Only way to make the first load appear faster is to load the CR assemblies and dlls on app start. E.g.; load a fake report on app start. Unfortunately, those 20+ seconds will now move to the initialization / load of the app...
    Ludek
BTW., downloading the latest Service packs is never a bad idea and may help a bit, but not 10+ seconds for sure.

  • Link files and directories in e-mails

This has probably been asked before, but I cannot seem to find an answer out there...
We are a small company that keep all our project files on a shared server. Now I would like to be able to send an e-mail to someone within our company including a link to a specific file and/or directory on the server, without actually including the file as an attachment.
    I.e.: Directory: /server/projects/wings/
    File: /server/projects/wings/estimate.doc
When the recipient of the e-mail clicks the above links the [wings] folder and estiamte.doc file opens automatically.
What is the correct way of writing the link?
    Have tried afp://XXXXXX
    file://XXXXXX
    but nothing seems to work...
(It would also be nice to be able to use these links in iCal.)
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks!

    > file://XXXXXX
If this is an absolute path, the ‘/’ at the beginning is missing, i.e. an additional ‘/’ is needed. It should be:
    file:///XXXXXX
Actually, the example you gave should be (note ‘/Volumes’ at the beginning):
    file:///Volumes/server/projects/wings/estimate.doc

  • Function moduls to create csv-file and send it per mail

    Hello,
    we have the following requirement.
    We created an eventhandler.
Inside this eventhandler we built up an internal table with 1-n entries.
Now we want to create a csv-file or excel-file in background and send it to the users mailadress.
Are there standard function modules which we can use for this requirement.
We can´t download the file directly to the users client with cl_gui_frontend_services because we are not in SAP GUI but in CRM Webclient UI.
    Thank you
    Best regards
    Manfred

    hello,
    thank you.
a coding example would be very helpfull.
the internal table shall be added as csv-attachment to the mail and the recipient shall be the current user.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Kind regards
    Manfred

  • Modified plist file and now  "Contents: (null) Version ? (Build ?)"  Help!!

I was trying to trick mac into thinking it had newer operating system so I could activate Iphone. Now it does not think it's 10.3.9 so skype and firefox no longer function. Please help!

You could try downloading and re-running the [Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxcombine dupdate1039.html].
If the file you modified was
    /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
then you could also try using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com] to selectively re-install just that file from the MacOSXUpdateCombo10.3.9.pkg.

When I scan and hit save as pdf, I get and error that says check properties for the file to make sure it is not a read only?

I recently installed Mavrick 10.90 on my Mac book pro. I have a HP 4500 printer scanner. and I have Adobe 11.0. My wife suggested that I uninstall the printer software and re-install it. After I did that, the problem was solved.

  • My Office for Mac keeps getting "Error Reporting" and I find it very hard to open without it closing and "Error Report" I even went through Microsoft support and look for the plist file and keep it on my desktop which solves the problem temporarily.

    Hi croatia2014,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you have photos in your Photo Stream that you want to save to your iPad, you can save them to your Camera Roll using this method:
Manage My Photo Stream contents. In the My Photo Stream album, tap Select.
Share, print, copy, or save photos to your Camera Roll album:  Select the photos, then tap .
You can find these steps in the iOS 7 user guide here:
    My Photo Stream
    http://help.apple.com/iphone/7/#/iphbfeb468fc
You may also find this advice useful:
If there are any photos in My Photo Stream that you want to keep, save them to your Camera Roll, then back up your Camera Roll and other data using iCloud or iTunes.

  • Many com.apple.mail.plist files in Library directory

I have 1,779 com.apple.mail.plist files in my library directory, all of which are dated September 12, 2010 at seemingly random times all in the PM.
These files are supposed to contain information about Mail preferences and account, right?  Seems like way too many files.
    Can I delete them?
Why was I looking at them anyway, you ask?  Because I was trying to solve the problem of com.apple.quicklook.satellite errors in my log, went into the Library directory to delete the quicklook plist files and notices these mail plist files.
    So, can I delete these?

I would delete them. Only one should exist, and it is located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. To access that folder start with:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Sidebar inoperable and missing com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file

My sidebar seems to be 'broken'. Originally I had a few extra folders added to it along with the usual drives and home folders etc, but whenever I tried to add another folder, or re-arrange the existing ones, it would simply revert back the next time I logged in.
I followed a few suggestions on here and deleted the com.apple.finder.plist file, and I looked for 'com.apple.sidebarlists.plist' on my computer, but couldn't find it - could this be the problem?
Having deleted the com.apple.finder.plist my sidebar has reverted to it's 'out of the box' form, but loses any customisation on restart - ie reverts back to it's default.
Annoying, since I use this feature a lot. Any suggestions, short of a full re-install?!!!

Having this exact problem, and posted on it a while ago in this forum. Never found a solution that was short of reinstalling Snow Leopard.
I restored from a Time Machine backup once but of course that gave exactly the same behaviour.
I've finally decided to do something about it again after trying to live with it but I really need this function to speed up my workflow.
Similarly to the OP I have created separate accounts which do not suffer from the problem - they retain any customisations once restarted.
Also, I cannot find the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file. I'm going to try the same steps suggested here and will report back - in the meantime however if you have managed to solve the problem another way I would be very interested.
I had thought that setting up a new account and transferring over all of my files might be the way to do it but am quickly running into issues (for example, transferring an iTunes library and retaining ratings / playcounts etc....).

  • My imovie seems to have completely crashed... and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have moved all my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. I've deleted all the plist files I can find and I still cannot get it to open.

Please help... it seems all is lost as all I kind find on this subject seem to lead to nowhere. My engagement was on imovie, a school project, several videos of our son. You will have to hold my hand through this process... as I am not very good at this type of thing. Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
    A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
    B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
    C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
    • go up to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref's
    • Select Accounts - Create a new User
    • Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
    • Log into as the new User
    Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
    D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.

    • Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

  • Transferring user preferences and configuration by importing plist files

At my job, we use iMac desktops. These are simple imaged workstations on a local area network, on which we login using a unique LAN user and password. I am particular about the configuration of my workstation and do a lot of configuring in System Preferences, as well as having my own bookmarks and whatnot. We do not have dedicated desks; I often find myself sitting at a desk I haven't sat at previously, and must reconfigure settings, import bookmarks from an HTML, etc.
I've noticed that I can easily export and import my keyboard text shortcuts between desktops by highlighting everything under System Preferences >Keyboard > Text and dragging it to the desktop, creating a keyboard plist file, and dragging this file into the same pane on a yet-to-be-configured desktop to easily import them. This saves the trouble of having to reenter them every time I'm at a new workstation.
    My questions are these:
—Are other personal preferences as easily transferable using plist files? Specifically my Dock preferences/layout, settings like Hot Corners, wired Apple Mouse configuration, Launchpad layout, etc.
—If so, which plist's would be required?
—Would I have to use Terminal?
—Is there an easier way to accomplish this without plist's?
Being able to copy and paste plist's into my user library to auto-configure my preferences and setup on new desktops would save me a lot of time when sitting at a new desk.
    Thanks!

If the specialist did a full backup, all you have to do is run Migration Assistant, which is in Applications / Utilities, and it'll basically put the machine back the way it was. If all he did was save some data files, that stuff is gone.

  • Variable substitution in the environment.plist file

I want an additional item in the PATH environment variable for GUI-launched apps. I've created the ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist file and added an entry to create a PATH variable. I have initially tried to set the value of this to
    "$(PATH):/usr/local"
in an attempt to append the /usr/local folder to the path. However, the PATH value appears to be exactly what I've set it to - without the substitution.
    1) Is there a way to get the existing value substituted in?
    2) As I'm always out to learn new things, is there a better way of achieving this?
(My fundamental problem is that I have written a plugin for XCode and I'm trying to not hard code the location of a compiler into it. Therefore I thought I'd use the PATH variable to let me find it. However the default PATH value doesn't include /usr/local which is where the compiler is located. So I'm looking for a way to add this folder into the PATH value, and the ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist seemed to be what I wanted - as long as I can get the substitution going. Otherwise I have to hard code the path into THAT file which I feel is just as bad!).
    Thanks
    Susan

    Hi Susan,
I'm sorry; I didn't mean to imply that this is the wrong place to ask the question. I hope that it's the best place. I was just trying to explain, mostly to myself, why everyone assumes that the part of the system that reads the environment.plist will behave like a shell.
If you were worried about hard-coding the path on your own machine, I would say that you needn't worry. The only path that exists prior to the setting of environment variables from the environment.plist is hard-coded into the system somewhere. A while back someone found it but that's not really important. If you want to start with that default, you can. If you need to know what it is, I'm sure that we can find it for you somewhere. I assume it's along the lines of:
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin
While I'm not telling you to not do it, I suggest that you rethink setting the user's path an environment.plist. Changing the environment of every last one of a user's processes "behind the back" of the user seems a bit presumptuous. It wouldn't be a problem if you set a variable that no other app could recognize but if you added something to my path, my first thought would be to look there for a trojan horse. I would eventually realize that it was misguided instead of malicious but I wouldn't like it. It also stands some chance of changing the behavior of a user's UNIX applications.
If you distribute an environment.plist file with your plugin, you would also have to address the issue of users that already have such files. Thus, it would seem that you would need to do a little checking in an install script. That being the case, you could evaluate the user's PATH variable in that script and use it to hard-code the path in an environment.plist that you generate programmatically from the install script at runtime. Such a script would also give you the opportunity to ask the user if he wants an environment.plist file.
Of course that approach would make it difficult for a user to remove an element from his path; it wouldn't be sufficient to cease adding the element to the path in the user's shell startup scripts. You would probably be better off using the default path. That might not interfere with changes the user makes in his shell startup scripts but it would mine. You added /usr/local/bin to the end of a user's path. My startup scripts only add path elements if they aren't already there. However, I want /usr/local/bin in front of the default part of my path so your change would alter the behavior of my system.
If you want to change the environment of a single application, it is common to "wrap" its invocation in a script that sets the environment before invoking the application. However, I'm not sure how that would work with an Xcode plugin.

  • IPhoto Keeps Quitting Even after Deleting Plist Files Repairing perm Files

When I try to launch iPhoto The page seems to begin to load then I get a box saying " The application iPhoto has unexpectedly quit". I tried to troubleshoot by deleting the iPhoto plist files and then I repaired the permission files. There is still no change.
What else can I do? Thanks very much for your help!

Glad to help, but I think you worked the magic Sally. Deleting photos from the Desktop is harmless to iPhoto, and doing the same again should not be a problem. Maybe it was the overfull disk that initially caused iPhoto to think, 'I don't have enough space here to open, so I'll crash.'
It works like this. If you connected a camera and imported them into iPhoto, then that is the only place those photos reside and to delete any of them afterwards would have to be done in iPhoto where you would select a photo, then Move to Trash. This would keep the index straight.
But if you had some photos on your desktop and imported them into iPhoto, it makes a copy of them inside the iPhoto Library. If you were to delete one of those photos from the Desktop, it would still show in iPhoto because its copy still exists in the iPhoto Library.
So when you reported the problem arose after your deleted some photos, it made me think along the lines I did. But as you didn't muck about with the iPhoto Library folder's contents, you could not have damaged it. So you haven't done anything to wreck things. Maybe iPhoto was just choking from a lack of space.
It's great your photos are still all there. Now, with that copy of your iPhoto Library - put it on a CD for safe keeping. Games, software, info from websites, even songs can mostly be replaced if need be, but one's photos are unique and deserved to be backed up, to either another hard drive or burnt to an optical disk.
A tip: I suggest you create a new folder in your Pictures folder called say, ExtraShots (name it what you like) and put your photos there instead of the desktop. Doing so is not crucial, just tidy, and there is a slight advantage that your computer will run quicker if the Desktop is uncluttered.
Not a tip: Do keep your hard drive down to less than about 90% full / at least 10% "available free space" as Macs like room.
All the best, and I hope you take some great photos.

  • How do you find out what application is generating a plist file in your preference folder?

I have had two similar warnings come up in Drive Genius 3, a program that I use to manage my drives.  The warnings occur during a daily verification of preferences on my main drive, a 256GB SSD.
    They state:
"The preference file at '/Users/me/Library/Preferences/com.analogsolutions.Football.plist' may be corrupted."
"The preference file at '/Users/me/Library/Preferences/org.machinedevelop.National.plist' may be corrupted."
Per Drive Genius' advisement, "Corrupted files can cause appplication crashes and should be moved to the Trash." I delete the files, however they are regenerated each day.
Q: How do you figure out what application is generating a preference file?  And is there a way to tell if this is a OS generated preference file?
I have searched online and cannot find any information about either Analog Solutions or Machine Develop nor am I able to discern what these particular .plist files are for...
Q: Are these two .plist files truly potentially harmful?
    Thanks for the Help!

Hi Everyone, sorry for the late response.  I have been monitoring my Preferences Folder; every moment I am on my computer trying to catch what application/process generates these files.  I was hoping to try your suggestions, but oddly enough the offensive .plist files have not returned since the last time I deleted them about a week ago.... strange...
In any case, I have responded to some of your suggestions and questions that I have information on:

The .plist file when opened in text editor contains a string of (what to me seems to be) an arbitrary list of numbers.

    Yes, seems likely...

Log back in while holding the shift key as you click the "Log In" button. That will prevent your login items from loading, among other things. Open your account preferences and launch the login items one at a time by double-clicking them in the list. After each one, check to see whether the files have been recreated.
Ran through login, one by one, no luck in identifying the application(s).

Thanks, the lock idea is the one I will try next if they ever reappear...

Unfortunately I do not know for certain.  Though from all my login/startup/reboot tests I believe that they are not directly linked to starting up the machine or loging in either.
I'm not really certain why the .plist have not returned.  I haven't uninstalled any programs, though I did run a couple updates for some widgets within the last week; however that was about 3 days after I deleted the last set of .plist files and usually they reappered everyday.  In any case, given that they have not been regenerated I guess my problem is solved per se, at least I am no longer getting that annoying warning everyday.   Still, it's a bit of a mystery
Thanks again for all the help!
