PMON process and ORACLE Instance  - Cannot allocate log. Archival required

Hello there,
We are running Oracle RAC (9i) database with two nodes and Oracle Applications 11i.The operatiing system is solaris 5.8.
1.Recently while bouncing the db, i happen to see many PMON process get started up? is it a normal thing to see those process? what is actually happening?

2.We happen to see some notifications like
"Oracle instance <xxx> - cannot allocate log -Archival required" in the alert log file and could see many log switches in a second in archival destination.
we have three members of log groups (two in each group) in one node and same on the other. Should we have to increase log_buffer_size or addition of redo log files is required?
the error messages:

Bueno.
I hope this is what you meant,

We apas the error that you can not save the archive logs for lack of space on disk. That happens when any process that generates too many ransacciones need to be written in the logs. For that reason much archive log is generated and fills the space.
Removes archivelog older, and those who already have a backup and there will be no problem so I recommend you have a disk space minimum of 50%

  • Increased logfile size and now get cannot allocate new log

Because we were archiving up to 6 and 7 times per minute, I increased our logfiles from size from 13M to 150M. I also increased the number of groups from 3 to 5.
    Because we want to ensure recoverability within a certain timeframe, I also have a script that runs every 15 minutes and issues 2 commands: ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE; and ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT;
I am now seeing in my alert.log file the following, almost every time we do a log switch.
Thread 1 cannot allocate new log, sequence 12380
    Private strand flush not complete
No other changes have been made to the database.
Why would this now be doing this?
Should I not be doing both the ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE and the ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT?
Is there something else I should be looking at?
Any suggestions/answers would be greatly appreciated.
    Db version: 11.1.0.7
    OS: OEL 5.5

Set the FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET parameter to the instance recovery time in seconds that you want...
ALTER SYSTEM SET LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES=upto 10; this will make sure that the redo logs are copied faster....
The sizing redo log files can influence performance because DBWR, LGWR and ARCH are all working during high DML periods.
A too small online redo log file size can cause slowdowns from excessive DBWR and checkpointing behavior. A high checkpointing frequency and the "log file switch (checkpoint incomplete) can also cause slowdowns.
Add additional log writer processes (LGWR).
Ensure that the archived redo log filesystem resides on a separate physical disk spindle.
Put the archived redo log filesystem on super-fast solid-state disks.

  • Transporting DBConnect DataSource to BWQ / BWP and Oracle Instance Name

    Hi,
I have a DBConnect Datasource / Source System in our BWD system that is pointing to an Oracle instance that is also a DEV system.  When we go to BWQ / BWP we want the source system to point to the Oracle QA / PRD system.  Is there a table where a mapping can be maintained pointing the DB Connect source system to different Oracle instances based upon the BW system that it is in?
    Thx, MGW

    Mel,
Create the respective dbconnect source system in BWQ and BWP. After the creation, maintain table RSLOGSYSMAP. To maintain table, go to rsa1, menu --> Tools --> Conversion of Logical System Names, and maintain the source system and target system values.

  • Oracle DB and Oracle Instance

I read a thread dated 18 Nov 2002 posted by 91911 that said QUOTE "An instance is the background Oracle Processes, Memory space and redologs running against a single Oracle SID. A database is the datafiles, controlfiles etc which may or may not be run against a single instance." UNQUOTE
Please advise under a single server environment, how does one view the relationship between Oracle DB and Instance. Is each instance a physical DB or is each instance part of the same DB, since each instance must have a separate SID
    Thanks
    Wong

To add to Ivan's and 91911's definitions, an instance is essentially a logical concept (i.e. it is the thing that your application talks to), while a database is the physical representation of the instance.
Every instance must point to one and only one database, while a database can be referenced by more than one instance.

This message indicates that Oracle wants to reuse a redo log file, but
    the
corresponding checkpoint associated is not terminated. In this case,
    Oracle
must wait until the checkpoint is completely realized. This situation
may be encountered particularly when the transactional activity is
    important.
    check for:
    - Background checkpoint started.
    - Background checkpoint completed.
These two statistics must not be different more than once. If this is
not true, your database hangs on checkpoints. LGWR is unable to
    continue
writing the next transactions until the checkpoints complete.
Three reasons may explain this difference:
    - A frequency of checkpoints which is too high.
    - A checkpoints are starting but not completing
    - A DBWR which writes too slowly.
The way to resolve incomplete checkpoints is through tuning
    checkpoints and
    logs:
    1) Give the checkpoint process more time to cycle through the logs
    - add more redo log groups
    - increase the size of the redo logs
    2) Reduce the frequency of checkpoints
    - increase LOG_CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL
    - increase size of online redo logs
    3) Improve the efficiency of checkpoints enabling the CKPT process
    with CHECKPOINT_PROCESS=TRUE
    4) Set LOG_CHECKPOINT_TIMEOUT = 0. This disables the checkpointing
    based on
    time interval.
    5) Another means of solving this error is for DBWR to quickly write
    the dirty
buffers on disk. The parameter linked to this task is:
    DB_BLOCK_CHECKPOINT_BATCH.
DB_BLOCK_CHECKPOINT_BATCH specifies the number of blocks which are
    dedicated
inside the batch size for writing checkpoints. When you want to
    accelerate
the checkpoints, it is necessary to increase this value.

  • Is dedicated server process part of Instance or not?

    Hi friends,
I am new to Oracle Database. I have been reading famous book "Expert Oracle Database Architecture" by Thomas kyte. At page no. 62 he has said that "This dedicated server process is not (by definition) part of the instance."
But in the [email protected] documentations at almost most of the places they have mentioned that dedicated server is part of an instance. Interestingly Tom Kyte has coauthored book. I got confused because Dedicated server process would also have PGA so it will be part of Memory so it should be part of instance. So has Tom Kyte said for that particular dedicated process and why? He must have said that with some reason? What is that?
I have also asked my trainer. But I didn't get satisfactory answer.
    Thanks.

Can you cite a specific instance of the documentation stating that dedicated server is part of the instance?  Your embedded link is a 'mailto' link, not a url to a document.
I can offer specific links stating otherwise.
If I start at Oracle Database Online Documentation 11g Release 2 (11.2)  I am at the portal for all database 11.2 documentation.
From there, do a search for 'dedicated server' and get the results of that search at Oracle Database Search Results: dedicated server
The first result returned is the definition, at Glossary
    The definition states:
    dedicated server
A database configuration in which a server process handles requests for a single client process.
If I follow the embedded link for 'server process', I get the definition of a "server process" at Glossary
Note that this definition is for all "server processes", not just dedicated server.  It says
    server process
An Oracle process that communicates with a client process and Oracle Database to fulfill user requests. The server processes are associated with a database instance, but are not part of the instance.

sankar"database is up and oracle instance is down"
A very interesting concept. Given that a database is just the collection of files that are kept transactionally consistent, and the instance is the memory and processes that manage those files, could you explain what is meant by "database is up and oracle instance is down". If the instance is up it may (or may not, depending on its state) have the database (files) open. If the instance is not up, then the database is ???

  • Establish SSL connection to Oracle Instance w/JDBC Thin Client

    Hello all,
I am writing a monitoring utility that will allow me to establish connections to both Oracle instances and LDAP repositories and query them to determine that they are up and running. My utility consists of a number of objects that handle connections to the LDAP and Oracle instances. I need to be able to do SSL and non-SSL connections to said instances.
My issue is this: I am able to do SSL and non-SSL to LDAP, and non-SSL to an Oracle instance. I am having problems, though, establishing an SSL connection to an Oracle instance (I am using the thin client). Whenever I try, a SQLException is thrown that states: "Encountered a problem with the secret store. Ok, a little background for those who may need it. Oracle uses a wallet to hold certs that allow SSL connections. • Oracle 10G Checkpoint not complete Cannot allocate new log

We have an oracle 10G database that has 4 groups of 200M redo logs. We are constantly seeing Checkpoint not complete followed by Cannot allocate new log.. messages in the alert log. When I look at the v$instance_recovery table I see this:
    SQL> select WRITES_MTTR, WRITES_LOGFILE_SIZE, WRITES_LOG_CHECKPOINT_SETTINGS, WRITES_OTHER_SETTINGS,
    2 WRITES_AUTOTUNE, WRITES_FULL_THREAD_CKPT from v$instance_recovery;
    WRITES_MTTR WRITES_LOGFILE_SIZE WRITES_LOG_CHECKPOINT_SETTINGS
    WRITES_OTHER_SETTINGS WRITES_AUTOTUNE WRITES_FULL_THREAD_CKPT
    0 0 66329842
    0 309461 41004
It seems most of our checkpointing is being caused by the log_checkpoint_interval being set to 10000, which means we are doing 20 checkpoints during one redo log since our OS blocksize is 1024. What I'm thinking about doing is first adding two more redo log groups, and then either increasing the log_checkpoint_interval to 40000 (5 checkpoints for one redo log) or unsetting log_checkpoint_interval and setting fast_start_mttr_target to 600. Which would be the recommended parameter change? I think Oracle recommends using the fast_start_mttr_target. Are there any other suggestions?

    Hi
    >>unsetting log_checkpoint_interval and setting fast_start_mttr_target to 600.
its a better idea, look on it
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams068.htm#REFRN10058
Just set fast_start_mttr_target parameter.it will resolve ur problem.
    Thanks

  • PMON and ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode error

    hello all
I have been asked to look into a problem server with the following details
    OS: sunOS 5.8
    Oracle: 10.2.0.1
sys user password is not available !
backgrround processes for the instance(sid=test) are running
only schema credentials available and with that user is able to connect.
verified all oraenv parameters(ORACLE_SID is same as the running instance(test)).
only one instance is configured in this server(verified all tnsnames.ora, data files etc).oratab is empty
    the issues are,
when I tried to connect to the server using "oracle" user using conn / as sysdba
    1. Tried to shutdown using , shutdown immediate
    ORA-01507:database not mounted
    ORACLE instance shut down
still able to see the background processes and user is able to connect
    2. Tried startup command,
In the nomount state I can see more than one PMON process with the same sid
    when tried to mount/open
    ran into the error,
ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode
Eventhough the background processes for the "test" instance are running I am not able to shutdown the instance using "oracle" user
    please help
    newbie

    hi
i renamed lk* file but the issue still remains,
    with the oracle user
    1./ as sysdba
    2. shutdown immediate
    this leads to
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory
still not able to identify the running oracle instance.
there is only one oracle home and the oraenv details are set with the correct values
verified the alert log(ora home details are matching with the env details), details of the oracle processes which are active are in the alert log along with the startup failures(mount errors) at the tail end
oracle sysdba is not able to identify the already running instance?
    please help
