Poi installation nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok I am going out of my mind with this one. I have installed
poi-2.5.1-final-20040804.jar
poi-contrib-2.5.1-final-20040804.jar
poi-scratchpad-2.5.1-final-20040804.jar
in the right place (in the same place that I put rowset.jar and it's working)
with jsp page:
<%@page import="org.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel.HSSFWorkbook"%>
<%
HSSFWorkbook wb;
the error is:
test4$jsp.java [3:1] cannot resolve symbol
symbol : class HSSFWorkbook
location: package usermodel
import org.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel.HSSFWorkbook;
It's ok with just the import statement but I get the error above with the workbook statement. I realise it looks like it can't find it but it doesn't make sense, I've put it everywhere in the system at various stages. I doubt anyone can help but thought I'd post it here just incase.
Thanks,
Louise.

so you are sure you put the jars in the folder
webapps/<contextname>/WEB-INF/lib
? If so, it should work after you reboot the webserver.
One additional thing you can try is emptying the directory where your servlet container stores the generated servlets (fx. for tomcat this is the 'work' directory). I sometimes have to do this when I make changes to the system, but it's very rare.

If you've had the demo version installed, prepare for the worst once you've bought the full version. Existing applications and /library/Receipts packages wreak havoc with the installer. For a fix, visit http://allinthehead.com/retro/269/iwork-installation-nightmares. That's where I found mine.

  • CS3 Web Standard Installation Nightmare

I just had to purchase a new computer (my old one was dying) and I've had nothing but NIGHTMARES trying to install just about anything. I just finished spending THREE HOURS installing Acrobat Pro and and am now trying to install Adobe CS3 Web Edition with absolutely no success. I am able to get to the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Standard Installer but almost as soon as I click on the "Next" key to install the software, the CS Installer comes to a grinding halt, the program hangs and refuses to respond - no error messages of anything else that might be useful. What is the problem? I REALLY need to get CS3 Web Standard on my machine ASAP.
    Thanks for your help.

    Which OS?
    What are your computer specs?
Are you installing from a DVD or a downloaded file?

  • ITunes installation nightmare

Well, I thought iTunes 4.9 was the worst engineered install I'd ever come across - after trying various install / uninstall / reboot cycles, I trawled my back-ups to find an old version and reinstalled it.
Delighted to see a new version today, 5.0 - worse than the previous, wouldn't install and following Apple's and InstallShield's various instructions for "fixing" the problem has now left me iTunes-less, unable to uninstall the broken iTunes and unable to install iTunes 5 and, you guessed it, unable to reinstall my nice old version (think it was 4.8).
Any tips on how to rectify my nightmare would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul
PS If anyone from Apple is reading this, feel free to chip in with helpful comments. Oh, and to stop messing around with something that worked fine. Oh, and to test your software on all platforms - making useless Windows Installer files isn't going to make me switch to Mac, it's going to make me boycott Apple products. Forever.

I too have been having nothing but problems since installing this update. right in the middle of the install my PC restarted. Error reporting (Windows has recovered from a serious problem....)said that the problem was caused by a device driver but could not identify the culprit. As I was reading the error report the computer shut down again. Upon restart there was the same report about an unidentified device driver causing the error.
When I closed that web page error reporting popped up again but this time said that the problem was caused by my graphics card (loop error) and suggested I work around it by disabling hardware acceleration and write combining. The the PC crashed and restarted again. Again, two "Windows has recovered from a serious error, please tell Microsoft about this" messages and two results pages as above (1st unknown driver/second graphics card). Again, PC crashes and restarts. Repeat.
(Disabling the accelration and write combining had no effect. Neither did updating the driver for my card. I downloaded the newest nvidia driver. For some reason I could uninstall it under safe mode and installed the update. A regular restart led to almost immediate crash. The other suggestion was that the card was faulty so I switched it for another Geforce I had and still it crashes.)
Can finally run, but only in safe mode. iTunes and Quicktime are installed but won't start and Windows can't uninstall them in Safe Mode. Can never stay up long enough uninstall in regular mode. Crashes too quickly.

  • Installation Nightmare and no help from customer service

I just spent July 2, 3, 5 from 11a-6p and Saturday July 6 from 8-2 waiting for installation of my fios service in my new apartment.  When i called them to let them know I was moving they insisted it was available at my new location.  When the tech got there at 2 on 7/2, the wiring was not done in the apartment and they needed the help of another type of guy who works for a sub contractor.  They called that tech, who said he was coming by the end of the day and he never showed up.  This happened again on Wednesday and Thursday.  I spent three days of my summer vacation in my house with three kids waiting for someone who had no intention of coming.  I called customer service three times and finally got a supervisor on Saturday am who told me they could not tell me if that outside contractor was ever going to show up.  They apologized, but thats it.  I asked to cancel my service and they were shocked.  I had no service anyway.  So they transfer me to a relief agent, who was also sympathetic, but told me the chances of the outside contractor showing up were slim and none and that they could schedule me for the end of the following week. That would make it two weeks with no phone/internet/tv but even worse, my vacation was over. I can't even describe how upset I am about losing precious time with my three small children.  They finally showed up as I was walking out the door with the three kids to go to the beach and they came walking in.  I have not received any kind of help from customer service other than for them to tell me they have no control over their subcontrator. I don't know what to say other than it was  a total nightmare. For what I pay for service for the past five years I expected a lot more of them

Ihotka, if you have a problem w/QT's refund process you should post your concerns over @ QuickTime Feedback.

  • Help!  Installation Nightmare!

I just recieved an iMac g4 from my brother. It has an 800mhz processor and has 512 mb of ram. I recieved the computer with osx 10.2 but i want to upgrade to 10.4 tiger. I have the tiger install disk and i put it in the computer and click reset as the installation prompts me to. When the computer resets, suddenly a grey screen with numbers and letters everywhere appear and on the back of that screen is a translucent sign with a large power button on it that says reset your computer by shutting it down and then turn it back on. I did this, but no luck and the same screen appeared....I don't understand why this is happening. Please help!

The screen you mention seeing, indicates a Kernel Panic.
And in an older machine that had previously only ran older
versions of OS X prior to 10.3, and/or OS 9.2.2, this may
be due to a problem with the installed RAM chip quality.
That would be a likely first thing to consider; but there are
other possible causes of a kernel panic. At least you have
not installed the OS X 10.4 yet, at this point, have you?

These two web sites have a fair amount of information on them to help
to learn how to deal with Kernel Panic issues, and causes.
    • iMac G4 Take-apart for Drive and Ram upgrades:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
Is the OS X 10.4 installation disc, a retail black label version with
white/silver X in the middle of it; or is is a gray-label disc which
was part of a software set originally sold with another computer?
Which iMac G4 model do you have? Since there were several with a
few different processor models, they each have differences, too. It
would appear both the listed 800MHz models use PC133 RAM...
Since the computer shipped with a 256MB chip in the factory-installed
RAM slot, and nothing in the user-accessible lower SO-DIMM RAM slot,
there is not enough RAM in the original location, to run OS X 10.4. But
you could remove the bottom plate of the computer, and take out the
RAM chip in that location, and then put the plate back on, and restart
the computer (without the install disc in the computer) to see how it
acts. In Jaguar 10.2.8, the computer would probably work fine. In 10.4
the situation may be quite different and a better quality 512MB or 1GB
chip could be put into the lower slot (assuming a 256MB was added)
and it may work properly, even for Tiger 10.4.
Did the computer include the original software set of discs? One of
them includes an Apple Hardware Test on it. You may seek to test
the computer to see if anything comes up from a test interval.
Hopefully the matter only involves upgrading the RAM chips.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Installation nightmare

I have purchased Intel version of solaris 8 , i am trying to install it on a 4GB drive,i create a Dos12 partition from 0 to 8 cylinders,x86 9 thru 16 cylinders, and the rest Solaris. The x86 is the active partion only.Upon finish copying the setup software the machine reboots and on the bottom left hand side i get a red box saying "Bad PBR".Anyone seen this, please help.

Yahoo! I finally got 8 installed on my intel box, on a spare 9GB disk. What a chore! The main problem turned out to be the Config Assistant diskette simply does not like my machine (and nobody else's either, judging from the authors in this forum).
I accidently had the Installation CD in the drive, without the config diskette inserted, while my SCSI was disconnected (desperation!). Upon re-boot, the monster began the config process. I eventually learned how to setup my boot process to first read diskette, then CD ROM, then SCSI instead of SCSI before CD ROM. I also learned to put that diskette away for keeps. Give it to someone you don't like.
I had previously formatted 1/3 of the new 9G disk with Windows. The Solaris config process recognized the start and stop cylinder count and allowed me to designate the start and end cylinders for Solaris right behind the windows partition on the same disk. This enabled me to successfully partition three GB for Solaris, (leaving the last 3GB for Linux). More good news, the installation did not disrupt the 1.5 GB of Windows files I had stored on the WIN portion of that disk.
I still have some chores to do, like get X windows / mouse etc running, install Star Office, etc. and arrange a switching software to enable me to boot either Win or Solaris at startup. I am able to use the Installation CD as a means to get to the boot display until then.
Those chores can't be as painful as just getting started, can they?
This install is not seamless. The installation CD finished it's task and didn't prompt me for the Software Disk 1 of 2. I rebooted with the Disk 1, and after some wasted, repeated effort, the disk successfully loaded it's stuff (in about 20 min). It did not prompt me to eject and stick in Disk 2. I had to fumble around and reboot the machine with Disk 2 installed. More wasted, repeated work, before the stuff on Disk 2 finally loaded (about 20 min.)
At one point, one of the Software disks prompted me to insert the "Localization" CD. In that whole kit, there aint one disk named "localization". I tried em all until it finally accepted the disk dealing with languages. It then ran quite a lengthy loading process.
I have been pecking at this task several times since June. Now that it's beginning to work, I must say that 8 seems to like my hardware OK, although there were some negative-sounding messages during a query of hardware and setup of my video.
I'm kind of new at this kind of experimentation, and took the trouble to write this all down in hope it eliminates part of the trial and error game for others.

  • CS3 AE Installation Nightmare

I am at the end of my rope with Adobe products and Adobe's scripted and  outsourced "technical support." I have spent days in the last couple of  months trying to get Adobe software to run. Recently I waiting 1.5 hours on a  phone to have a guy in India tell me that I would have to go up a grade  in paid support to get the answer to my question!!!!
    Ridiculous.
The problem now is my home computer...I had to have the C disc wiped  because I picked up a malware...while trying to download a DVD writing  utility to do what my computer at work would not do: write to DVD with  Encore.
The problem now is that when I try start CS3 AE an error message  comes up saying that AE cannot load AERes1.dll I have searched for a  solution and the only one I can find is, that's right, wipe your C drive  and reinstall.
    Some details:
Running XP with latest updates Two gigs ram. Have the entire CS3  suite. GEForce 7800GT graphics card. Also have Dreamweaver CS3 and  Fireworks CS4.
When I try to reinstall AE, the computer asks me to reinstall  Fireworks CS4 which has not been uninstalled. I put the disc in and it  tells me to put the CS3 installation disc. I installed Quicktime before I  noticed the problem. I uninstalled Quicktime and attempted to install  AE. No luck.
I have an important video to be done in less than two weeks. Can  anyone help...Adobe does not seem to care.

I'll give the same answer here that I gave on the other forum where you asked this:
    > Adobe does not seem to care.
    That's a pretty broad statement.
    I'm Adobe, and I care.
Problems can occur when you install and activate an earlier version  (like CS3) after a later version (like CS4). You say that you "wiped"  your C drive, but there may still be some lingering traces of the  previous activations on your disk. That would potentially cause problems when you re-installed the Adobe software.
In order to really start from a clean state, you need to run the  "clean scripts".
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs3clean.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html
Try uninstalling your Adobe software, running these utilities, and  then reinstalling. Re-install the CS3 software before reinstalling the  CS4 software.
Normally, I wouldn't jump straight to recommending uninstalling and  reinstalling, but it seems that you're in the process of rebuilding this  system after a "wipe" anyway.
Good luck. Let us know if you need any more help.

  • CS6 Installation Nightmare

I upgraded to CS6 and after installation on my computer, it works for a day, then i get a pop-up saying I have a trial. I have uninstalled 4 times.
Adobe has uninstalled and reinstalled with remote access.
I have followed every instruction given by Adobe and Dell, had  a total of three remote accesses to my computer. 1 Adobe and two Dell
Hve been told to make myself the adminstrator,...I am.
Given instructions to make myself the admistrator on CS6, did that.
Got a new firewall because Dell said I had a virus causing my problem ($250 for their help and new firewall $139)....same result the next day.....
have been given instructions to change the name of files of some of common files.....that didn't work.
I am tired of "chatting" --it takes hours and I end up with the same result. I have updated my open case and have been told to respond back which I will do tomorrow, but how  much more time I am willing in invest is quickly coming to and end.
Granted I am not an expert, but have had other expert help here. He has been dumfounded by this process also.

Please share your system info and provide the following logs:
oobelib log, amt3 log and PDapp log .
You can find them at the following locations:
    For Mac:
oobelib log and amt3 log at /tmp
    PDapp log at /Users/<User_name>/Library/Logs
    For Win:
    \Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp
This would help us in resolving the issue.
Please mail it to [email protected]

  • Password latest Leopard installation nightmare

After much difficulty, I now have Leopard (10.5)installed on my PB. However, the "login" screen does not recognize my name/password combination(s).
Yes, I did the "password reset" after booting from the Leopard retail disk. Apparently, what I put in does not match my "keychain." I assume that's why I get a login screen?
I've tried again booting from the Leopard disk (perhaps to run Disk Utility or again reset passwords) but for some reason holding the C key during start-up no longer boots from the disk. I've also tried connecting with FW to a MacPro as FW target (holding T key) but this also no longer works.
Booting from the disk and booting as a FW drive on the MacPro both worked previously. Can't figure out why it no longer does?
    In summation......
    1. I'm getting a login screen because the password is different from my keychain?2. Leopard does not recognize my name/password combinations (even though I reset them right before rebooting)
    3. I'm no longer able to boot from the Leopard disk (retail version) nor as a FW drive on a MacPro.
Incidentally, I reset the RAM chips but that hasn't helped.
What could I possibly be missing?
Hope your New Year is happier than mine thusfar and I greatly appreciate any time you devote to trying to help me.
    Terry D

Terry: Can you connect the Powerbook to the Mac Pro in FireWire Target Disk Mode and back up all the important files from the PB's drive onto the MP's drive? If so, do that. Then boot the Powerbook to the Leopard DVD in the external FireWire optical drive, and use Disk Utility on the DVD (it's in the Utilities menu in the Installer application) to partition the PB's drive using the Apple Partition Map (do not use the GUID partition map) and create a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. Then install Leopard onto it.
If you can't back up the PB's drive to the MP's in Target Disk Mode, you'll have to remove it from the PB and connect it directly to the MP via an external enclosure or USB adapter to back up the files. Then put it back into the PB and proceed as I've outlined above.
Don't involve the MP in the installation of Leopard on the PB — without hashing over all the details, I'll just say I suspect a lot of your problems may have arisen from the way you did that the first time.

  • BT Infinity installation nightmare

I have ordered BT Infinity + Phone Line + Unlimited Calls, which involves transferring my phone line from TalkTalk.
Here is the letter of complaint I am currently penning to BT which expains my predicament...  Any Help from BT on here to get this resolved would be appreciated as myself and my wife are at our wits end with the whole process...
I first placed an order at the beginning of August 2011 through your website to transfer my TalkTalk service to BT.  I placed the order and got all the required confirmation e-mails and everything seemed to go through ok.  I waited the 5 days as stated in the confirmation e-mail but did not hear anything.  On contacting BT I was told my order had been placed on hold and unfortunately I would have to re-order from scratch.
This was annoying as it had delayed the order process by 5 days but I went through it all again and re-ordered.
This time everything went through correctly and I was given a delivery date of the 19th August for the router and the 23rd August for the Engineer to install this equipment.
The router arrived on the 19th August without an issue and then the engineer arrived on the 23rd, however after 30 minutes of the engineer sitting in his van he came back into the house and said he could not install the equipment and that he was off to another job.
I then had to spend the next 2 hours being passed around various people until I found someone who could explain that the problem was due to TalkTalk not transferring the phone line over.
I do appreciate that some of this is out of your control, but I placed the order over three weeks before so why wait until the engineer is in my house before checking whether the line has been transferred?  TalkTalk were well aware this was happening as I had received e-mail confirmation a couple of weeks before, plus they did cease my services on the 23rd August.
After the 23rd August I had to contact BT every couple of days to find out what was happening to my service and on more than one occasion I was cut off mid call, which is very frustrating.  I lost count of the number of occasions I was told I would be contacted by BT only for the day to arrive and no phone call.
From the 23rd August I had no phone line or Internet connection.
On the 30th August my phone line was reconnected, when I contacted BT to inform them this had happened they told me this was not the case…  I was calling them from the actual phone but still the computer said this had not been connected yet so I must be wrong..
After a number of phone calls over the next couple of days I finally managed to persuade BT this was the case and we could then move on to connecting BT infinity.
Even though my phone line was connected on the 30th August I have had to wait until the 16th September for the engineer to come and install the equipment, I tried to get this changed to a sooner date but nobody would help with this request.
Due to all the problems so far I contacted BT again on the 14th September to make sure everything is going to be installed and ready on the 16th, I rang the 0800 800 150 number and explained the problem only to be told my phone line was still not working..  I explained I was calling from the phone line and that I had been through this before…  They then placed me on hold for 25 minutes then cut me off.  I called back and spoke to a supervisor who confirmed I had been cut off deliberately and then was very helpful and confirmed all would be ok for the 16th September.
16th September arrived and my wife waited from 8am – 1pm for an engineer and nobody arrived.  When calling BT they informed me that our Infinity order had been cancelled and an engineer was never due to arrive today.  Another wasted morning….
After calling again later that day I managed to get through to someone who informed me our phone line is still showing as not connected.  The phone line that I am using to call BT on and has been working since 30th August!!!!
I now have to wait until Tuesday 20th September for the phone line case to be closed before BT Infinity can redo the order for the third time.  I am not convinced anything will happen on tuesday but you never know.

  • Leopard Installation Nightmare - Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro running 10.4 with plain vanilla everything (hardware and software). I started an upgrade install with Leopard today (so excited!) only to have it abort when it was nearing completion of the DVD verification phase. When it rebooted, the old OS (10.4) could no longer boot from the hard drive, and the Leopard DVD had no luck mounting it. I tried a repair from the DVD with no luck -- all I got was a "Checking catalog; keys out of order; Repair or Verify Failed; First Aid failed" string of errors. When I try to boot from the hard drive I just get the Apple and spinning circle for 3-4 minutes until the system shuts down.
Help! Please! I don't want to delete and entire drive of personal files!

Its a collection of information talking about about how to prepare for a successful install.
There's also a collections posts from people (from these forums) talking about how they solved their install problem, or how they had a successful install. Should be helpful if you're motivated to read through it.

  • Installation nightmare - need guidance

I've got an iMac G5 and an iBook G4, both of which I installed Leopard on last week. The iBook works fine. The iMac worked well for a couple days, then apps start quitting every once in a while, then more and more often. Then the whole computer started crashing (kernel panic grey screen), and other weird things started happening like the finder blinking continually.
The first thing I tried was an archive & install (I originally just did an upgrade). Every time I tried, I'd either get a kernel panic sometime during the upgrade, or I'd get a message about a missing essentials package. I finally wiped my entire hard drive, got a couple more kernel panics, and finally managed to get it to install.
From there, I let the setup assistant restore my backup from Time Machine, and I thought everything would be great. Its been a couple days, and today, all the same issues started again.
So, I went to try an archive & install, and got a kernel panic halfway through. So now, I'm sitting here with a half installed OS and a backup of all my data and I'm trying to figure out what step to take next, and I want to make sure I'm right as I've already wasted a massive amount of time on this.
I'm thinking at this point that I must have some app or preference that is causing this. The only other explanation is that there's something wrong with my hard drive, but that seems unlikely since it worked perfectly under Tiger. (I would revert to Tiger, but I did not make a clone and that seems just about as difficult).
So my plan is to wipe the drive (again) and reinstall the OS (again), but this time, don't do a full restore from Time Machine, and instead spend countless hours manually bringing back all my data, reinstalling all my apps one by one, etc.
Does that seems like the best course of action or is there something else I should try?

Do you have a full clone of your Tiger system? I had a SuperDuper clone of my Mac HD.
I tried a "upgrade and install". This failed at the very end with a blue screen of death. I tried to start over and do archive and install, but this option was grayed out. So I was left with "erase and install". Believe it or not, this worked. After the "Erase and install", it prompted me for "migrate from another Mac", "migrate from a volume on this Mac", and a couple more. I selected "migrate from a volume on this Mac", pointed to my SuperDuper clone, and everything came over. There were a couple of things a had to reinstall, but I lost no data.
    Good luck

  • Installation nightmare - password !!!

    Hi
I have just done an upgrade - Leopard on top of Tiger.
When I completed the upgrade, I was asked for my password on restart.
The password works, but I keep going back to the same screen. It keeps asking me for my password.
I have searched this forum, but it only seems to talk about the fix for passwords of 8 characters or more - my password was only 5 characters, and the fix will not work for me.
Can anyone help me and my iMAC ?
    Thanks

One good thing is that when the iMac is at the login page, I can see and access it from my MBP over the wireless network, so could bring some over the network to my MBP (smaller files of course).
Question - as I said above I did the upgrade option as I didnt back up certain files I had due to lack of space on external HDD. Archive and Install copies the system folder, so if i moved those files I need to a new folder in the Sys folder would they move across to the archive??
I hope so as there are a couple of iMovie projects of around 10GB each that would take so long over the wireless network to copy.
    Thanks
