Pointbase and AS 8.0

I follow the tutorial 1.4 for building the Duke Bookstore and every thing works fine on my machine.
However, I try to kill the pointbase and force the DB exceptions.
But when I tried to restart pointbase, it seems the Application Server (AS) no longer recover from the connection loss without restart.
Is this suppose the feature? I assume that the AS can recover and resilience from DB connectivity crashes, without the need for the restart, otherwise it seems very fragile for the infrastructure and all the services not related to the db will be interrupted.
Any advise?
Thanks.

If you restart Pointbase any active connection pools will be hosed There are properties that you can set when you create a Connection Pool to have it validate the Connection. Please see the PE 8.0 FCS docs for details. These are not set in the pools created by the sample apps.

  • How to set default 'schema' in Pointbase?

    I am using Netbeans EA2 with bundled appserv. I have tried creating a CMP entity bean from the Pointbase sample database (PBPUBLIC), which works. But when i created my own database (MYDATABASE) in Pointbase and a CMP bean for my test-table, i get a SQLException: Invalid table name "Mytable" specified at position 147.
    This exception is thrown when i run "findByPrimaryKey" on my tablebean's home.
    I think i have narrowed the problem down to this:
    When I execute sql-commands on my db, I have to write
    Select * from "MYDATABASE"."Mytable"
    If i try to execute
    Select * from "Mytable"
    i get an error. (Invalid table name)
    Whereas when i execute commands on the Pointbase sample db (PBPUBLIC), both these sql's work:
    select * from "PBPUBLIC"."CUSTOMER_TBL"
    and
    select * from "CUSTOMER_TBL"
    My questions are
    1. How do i specify that "MYDATABASE" should the default schema in my database?
    is it possible at all? I have tried searching the pointbase docs, and looked in Pointbase Commander, but have found nothing.
    2. If I was going to fully qualify, that is, use "MYDATABASE"."Mytable" everytime i query the database, how and where do i specify that my entity bean should map betweed my dbschema and "MYDATABASE"."Mytable" ? Writing
    <table-name>MYDATABASE.Mytable</table-name> in sun-cmp-mappings.xml did not work (but that was no suprise)
    Is it not possible to fully qualify the tablename when using entity ejb's?
    the error i get is similar to the one in this thread, except that my dbschema name is correct.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=586762&tstart=0
    I have tried creating a new dbschema in Netbeans, and editing sun-cmp-mappings.xml to point to the new dbschema. But i still get the same error.
    And btw, i know that my database is available, cause when i try to get the DataSource for my db directly, and execute a query, it works. But i have to fully qualify the tablename.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks.

    I solved using the SET PATH statement.
    SET PATH your_default_schema, PointBase;
    Follow an extract from the PointBase Developers Guide:
    If you never execute a SET PATH statement, then the CURRENT_PATH consists of the
    schema POINTBASE, followed by your existing schema. When a SET PATH statement is
    issued, it completely replaces the existing CURRENT_PATH, unless CURRENT_PATH is part
    of the schemas being set in the path.
    The order of the schemas in the path is generally crucial. When the database system is looking
    for SQL objects, it looks for them in each schema (unless explicitly referenced otherwise),
    starting with the first schema in the path, then the next, etc...., until an SQL object is found that
    meets the criteria. One way to override the CURRENT_PATH is to explicitly reference the
    SQL object. For example, to reference a table, you can specify schema_name.table_name. In
    the above examples, the SQL object of table_name would be searched in the schema of name
    schema_name.
    I hope this helps,

  • Ant Tasks for Pointbase

    In the online Docs, I found info regarding creating ant tasks to start and configure
    the WebLogic server. But I would like to also have an ant task that will start
    Pointbase. I have created ant tasks that will connect to pointbase and create/fill
    a database and another ant task that will drop a database. But I can't find any
    info about starting the Pointbase database. All of the BEA documentation only
    says to manually start the Pointbase database and then continue.
    Has anyone created or knows of an ant task that will launch Pointbase?? In my
    case, I'm only trying to launch and use Pointbase from the BEA directories.

    We have an ant task, but we dont doc it. This is in 8.1
    <taskdef name="pointbase"

  • Oracle instead of Pointbase

    Hi All,
    I am just developing a portal prototype. We have installed a standard weblogic platform 8.1 SP4 on Linux. Now we want to change from the standard pointbase database to the oracle 10 database. The database is already set up and running.
    Can anybody provide me with the necessary steps to perform this migration? What do I need to do to store the data in oracle instead of pointbase?
    Is there a detailed tutorial / guide for this? I think it is not an usual task, but I couldn't find the relevant inforamtion.
    Your help is very much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Cord

    hi joespeh
    This should be rather simple. just switch you jdbc drivers and you are
    all set for oracle.
    You may want to read about the JDBCConnectionPool and JDBCTxDataSource
    elements to help setup connection pool for oracle
    Hope this helps, or did I get your question completly wrong.

    Sunil Sunil -
    What error message are you seeing when you say you are unable to run the ECperf web application? Is there something returned to the browser or does the browser never connect to the server?
    If you post the snippets of the entries you have made to the various configuration files, someone might be able to spot something amiss.
    If this is Release 2 (versions 902 or 903) that you are running, then by default the web app bindings are now performed in the http-web-site.xml file. Also, the default HTTP port in the http-web-site.xml file is 8888. I guess you've modified this in the correct file, but without seeing it, it's something to at least point out.

  • Petstore 1.3 with Oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris 9 - deployment error

    Hello,
    I'm trying to get Petstore 1.3 shipped with WebLogic Server 7.0 to work with Oracle
    8.1.7 on Solaris 9 with a third-party (Oracle) jdbc driver (classes12). I did
    the following:
    1) created a new connection pool with the correct Oracle database URL and driver
    class name (oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver), also user/password properties for
    the Oracle db, and the WL server selected in targets;
    2) created a database schema for Oracle based on the data in Pointbase and the
    weblogic-cmp-rdbms-jar file as well as petstore_catalog_utf8.sql;
    3) created a new tx datasource pointing to the Oracle conn pool;
    4) modified the catalog component's ejb-jar.xml file's env-entry to contain CatalogOracleDAOImpl;
    5) put weblogic.jar in the classpath;
    6) used Java's dbping utility to check connection to the database via the Oracle
    driver (works fine--no network adapter error or anything related).
    I then rebuilt the ear files (build is successful), but when deploying get the
    following error:
    "Cannot deploy EJB AccountEJB from customerEjb.jar. Cannot find datasource for
    JNDI datasource-petstorePool" and says to make sure the JNDI name and deployment
    descriptors are correct (I checked the customer component's deployment descriptors
    against the tx datasources' JNDI and they match).
    What step(s) am I missing? Any suggestions on what else I need to modify would
    be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Beverly Claire

    Beverly:
    If you have 8.1, then you should be able to simply and easily create a
    connection pool to petstore via the console.
    The current error you encountering: "petstorePool does not exist" is
    because either:
    petstorePool is not defined or there was a failure when the pool was first
    created trying to connect to the DBMS.
    The full errror should be in the log file prior to the TXDatasource error.

    No, actually we're not evaluating in the sense of just-trying-things-out.One
    of our clients is considering an application server. They're relying on usfor
    help in choosing which would be best. As of now, we are comparing BEA WLServer
    7 and 8.1, Sun ONE Application Server 7 EE, Oracle 9i Application Server,and
    Fujitsu Interstage v5 Application Server. For cluster testing andperformance
    comparison purposes, we'd like to use the same J2EE Application across allservers,
    and the obvious choice is Petstore 1.3. One aim is to smoothly connect toan Oracle
    database. The other app servers provide setup scripts and databaseschemas for
    Petstore-with-Oracle, so db conn and deployment are not a problem at all.As for
    WL, we've been trying to get Petstore (both the version downloaded fromSun's
    Java Blueprints and the version that shipped with WL 7) to work withOracle, but
    no luck so far. It's getting a bit frustrating, given the ease with whichthings
    worked out with the other app servers.
    Yes, I've tried out Avitek MedRec for WL 8.1, and this time BEA has kindlymade
    provisions for Oracle db, so connection to Oracle is not a problem. I'mhoping
    BEA will come around to doing the same thing for Petstore, although I'mguessing
    that won't be in the near future.
    Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bevery Claire

  • Installation of Sun ONE Studio 5 SE 60 days trial

    It's supposed that a standard installation includes Sun ONE Studio and Sun ONE Application Server 7 with PointBase.
    I installed twice, in both installations the IDE works fine. But despite the installation completes without any error message neither Sun ONE Application Server 7 nor PointBase are installed.
    My OS is Windows XP.
    Could someone help me to find why this happens?
    Thanks!!!

    I read now the log generated during the installation. It shows a lot of error lines. But I'm not able to know the cause of the problem. The IDE is installed OK, but there is not any evidence of PointBase and Sun One Server installation.
    It follows the log file content:

  • CMP with Auto-increment Primary Key problem

    I'm trying to set a column as IDENTITY in PointBase and have the app server utilize this in the CMP beans. I followed the instructions from the tutorial:
    - In the deployment descriptor, the primary key class is defined as a java.lang.Object. The primary key field is not specified.
    - In the home interface, the argument of the findByPrimaryKey method must be java.lang.Object.
    - In the entity bean class, the return type of the ejbCreate method must be a java.lang.Object.
    Below is (a fragment of) my deployment descriptor:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE ejb-jar PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0//EN" "http://java.sun.com/dtd/ejb-jar_2_0.dtd">

    <cmp-field>
    <field-name>color</field-name>
    </cmp-field>
    </entity>
    In the admin-serv/logs directory I get the follow message (bad place for the logs, took me a while to find where it was putting it!):
    [24/Sep/2002:16:33:57] WARNING ( 4165): Validation error in bean DocumentType: Warning: All primary key columns in primary table DOCUMENT_TYPE of the bean corresponding to the generated class com.sun.itstar.j2ee.projectdocmgt.ejb.DocumentTypeBean_387898907_JDOState must be mapped to key fields.
    Map the following primary key columns to key fields: DOCUMENT_TYPE.ID. If you already have fields mapped to these columns, verify that they are key fields.

    Great! This worked. Here are some clear steps:
    1. delete the field from the CMP
    2. delete any business methods that you might have for the field
    3. go to the properties of the bean, find the primary key property. Set the property to Unkown Primey Key Class (java.lang.Object)
    Now there is a bigger problem. CMR fields. In ejbPostCreate() the bean gets its own pk and looks up other related beans. Now that I have removed the accessor to the pk field (and the pk field from the bean), how do I lookup the relationships?
    I need some method that I can call from within ejbPostCreate() that will return the primary key...
    I tried adding the field back in but not as the primary key. That generated an exception that said you cannot do that. If the field is the pk it must be marked as the pk.
    Any ideas?

  • Dining & Dining2 examples

    Hello,
    I have tried the dining examples with:
    Oracle,PointBase and MySQL
    I have managed to connect to the databases and get the corresponding schema. Deployment was successful in each try, and I always meet the same errors: transaction errors and persistence errors when the restaurant_test_app is run for the first time.
    I have checked everything for several hours and I am unable to make it run. I have followed the tutorial step by step and I know what I am doing. I have used the last thin driver for Oracle 8i.
    When I tried mysql I thought it would work, but the same errors appeared.
    should I post the error messages?
    could someone help me?
    I am under W2K server service pack 3, does SUN App Server run under this version?

    WHY DOESN'T APPS7 TEST THE PERSISTENCE DATABASE WHEN IT IS ASSIGNED? if it does... then why does it fail?

    Hello,
    Clean system: W2K Professional, service pack 3, MS explorer 6.1, Oracle 8i, mysql and pointbase.
    I have created the simplest CMP bean:
    Name: String
    Rating: int
    After not Being able to make it work under Oracle I
    test it with PointBase:
    Pointbase:
    PBPool
    com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver
    URL:
    jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost/sample
    USER/PASSWORD:
    PBPUBLIC/PBPUBLIC
    I set up the corresponding jdbc and PM pools.
    Under Pointbase:
    create table test_me
    ( name varchar(80) primary key,
    rating int);
    commit;
    After mapping the CMP EJB to the table by using the Schema from the database connection without problems and having set up the CMP I deploy it with no problems.

  • Can Oracle 9i enable schema/table creation to be transacted?

    If anyone can help with this, that would be much appreciated.
    So - the server has disabled autocommit and commits/rollbacks are handled by the application. Even though this is the case, Oracle 9i is not rolling back changes that have (i) created schemas/users and/or (ii) tables.
    Worse still, it seems to be performing a partial rollback - some tables in a schema are left with data and others are not.
    Now, this may be caused by our server creating tables for indexing while adding data to some existing tables - that is the table definitions have auto-committed the transaction to date, also committing the table insertions/updates.
    After some delving, the JDBC driver has the following method: dataDefinitionCausesTransactionCommit - for Pointbase and other databases, this returns false - for Oracle it returns true.
    The questions are therefore:
    1) Is there a solution with Oracle 9i that enables schema and table creation to be transacted?
    2) Does Oracle 10g allow definition clauses to be transacted?

    Actually I believe there is a limited way to make DDL statements transaction based via the CREATE SCHEMA command.
    From the 9.2 SQL manaul >>
    Use the CREATE SCHEMA to create multiple tables and views and perform multiple grants in a single transaction.
    To execute a CREATE SCHEMA statement, Oracle executes each included statement. If all statements execute successfully, Oracle commits the transaction. If any statement results in an error, Oracle rolls back all the statements.
    <<
    This may be of some limited use to you, but your process should probably be changed to track of the DDL and to undo (drop) any created objects if a rollback is issued.

  • Unable to fetch columns; Invalid state/No Suitable Driver

    Hi!
    I'm trying to populate a combo box with data from a MySQL database (or any other database for that matter), I create a JDBC connection source, and set the following:
    URL = jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test
    Driver = org.mysql.jdbc.Driver (i have also tried org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver)
    Username = anonymous
    Password = <blank>
    Next I create a NBJdbcRowSet and set:
    Command = SELECT * FROM foo
    Connection Provider = connectionSource1 (the above connection source)
    Now if I click the elipses next to Default Column Values, I get the message 'Unable to fetch columns; Invalid State'
    If I replace the NBJDBCRowSet with a NBCachedRowSet, the error becomes 'Unable to fetch columns; No Suitable Driver'.
    The database is browseable in the runtime tab, and the table exists (I can run SQL queries and get the expected results). The anonymous account exists and has access to the tables in question (the same setup is used in a few different applications, all of which work fine). Using the root account gives the same results. Using the PointBase example database gives the same results:
    Driver: com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver
    URL: jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost:9092/sample
    Details of setup:
    OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
    IDE: Sun Java Studio Enterprise 7 2004Q4
    Java version in use: 1.4.2_05 (as packaged with the studio)
    MySQL: v5.0.7-beta-nt
    Connector: MySQL Connector/J 3.0.17-ga
    PointBase: As came with Studio Enterprise
    I should mention that I can get DB connectivity in my app, I can create a comboBox and set the model to 'nBCachedRowSet1: name' and the contents of that field appears in my comboBox, however I need to create about a dozen tables and I don't relish the thought of manually creating models for each one ;)
    Any suggestions are appreciated!
    Cheers!
    Darren

    Hi Thanks for your reply.
    I've retried with PointBase and the Sample DB:
    * New project. New JFrame.
    * Create ConnectionSource, NBJdbcRowSet, ComboBox
    * Config ConnectionSource:
    - Driver: com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver
    - URL: jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost:9092/sample
    - Username/pass: as per PointBase setup
    * Config NBJdbcRowSet
    - ConnectionProvider: connectionSource1
    - Command: SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERINFO
    - Default Column Values: <open GUI>, <Fetch Columns>, "Unable to fetch columns; Invalid State"
    So this is where I get the problem, I'm not sure if i've buggered it up though, so I continue to see if I can get data:
    - Add Column: NAME
    - OK, Close
    * Config ComboBox
    - Open Model dialog
    - Select Mode: ComboBoxEditor
    - RowSet: nBJdbcRowSet1 (this throws the error again)
    - Column: NAME (entered manually, dropdown is empty)
    - OK, Close
    * Run app
    Errors!
    Seems like the GUI builder did something wrong - it generated a bunch of functions for each thing i added, like this:
    public void setJComboBox1(JComboBox val) {
    this.jComboBox1 = val;
    and the project won't compile. I figure out it should be like this:
    public void setJComboBox1(javax.swing.JComboBox val) {
    this.jComboBox1 = val;
    but the functions aren't doing anything anyway, so I delete them all. I'm starting to think my installation is borked.
    Project now compiles and runs, but there's no data, and I get:
    ClassNotFoundException: com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver
    At this point i should probably find the jar with that driver in it and mount this/add it to the classpath, but the boss has decided we'll use Borland Delphi 2005 .NET anyways, so I won't take this any further...
    Thanks for your help guys!

    I even tried startup & Deployment option as "Start weblogic server in Expressmode" and still same error I am getting and this time instead of in eclipse console, I can see command prompt and here also showing "Server state changed to STARTING"
    FYI, I created domain with runtime JRocket 1.6.0_05.
    I even tried to clean build the portal project and publish using clean option. Still same problem coming :(
    FYI, my system is having 1 GB RAM only and bit slow. Could this be a problem or something else? Please suggest.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gopikrish
    The root cause for your error is, it is not able to start the Pointbase database. Looks like you configured a domain with default pointbase database. In the domain\bin\ one of the starup scripts like startWeblogic.cmd, you should see some lines that start the pointbase database.
    java.sql.SQLException: SQL-server rejected establishment of SQL-connection. Pointbase Server may not be running on localhost at port 9093
    Instead of starting from Workshop, go to the domain root folder and start the weblogic using the command like startWeblogic.cmd (or .sh on unix). This should start the pointbase and then start the portal domain. Portal domain does need this backend pointbase database to store all the portal meta data and has datasources configured for this.
    Do you have a Clustered Portal domain, with one of the managed servers located in the remote machine. If yes, and if you use default Pointbase database, you need to change something like pointbase db should not be localhost but the name of the machine where you have the admin server running.
    Either way, the issue is not able to stat the pointbase db and thus serve not starting.
    Thanks

  • Can't instantiate JSF Custom Component

    I'm hoping some of you expert (or at least seasoned) JSF custom component developers might be able to lend some insight into the "Can't instantiate class" problem. I have a custom component which extends another component (which happens to be Oracle ADF's panelGroup), and I've verified that everything is in place:
    1. Component class uses correct component type referenced by faces-config.xml and tag class
    2. Renderer type referenced in faces-config.xml matches that of the renderer type in component class
    3. There is a default constructor (no args) for the component class, which also sets the renderer type
    4. TLD with tag is correct
    All classes are definitely in the classpath, as I have another custom component in the same packages which loads and is used just fine.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    So, is no one else having any problems when using the new JSF components from Java Studio Creator 2 in their existing projects? I can make simple projects in Creator and run them on PointBase and Tomcat and can deploy and run from Eclipse using MyEclipse but I cannot get my existing project working and I am wondering if their is some sort of conflict between the new JSF components and legacy Struts stuff in that project or if perhaps Spring is someone interferering. Kind of at a loss right now...
