Polymorphism and private methods

In the following example, why does show() invoke TestA.m3 instead of TestC.m3 when the target object is an instance of TestC?
package lib;
public class TestA {
public void show() { m1(); m2(); m3(); }
void m1() { System.out.println("A1"); }
void m2() { System.out.println("A2"); }
void m3() { System.out.println("A3"); }
package pkg;
public class TestB extends lib.TestA {
void m1() { System.out.println("B1"); }
void m2() { System.out.println("B2"); }
void m3() { System.out.println("B3"); }
package lib;
public class TestC extends pkg.TestB {
void m1() { System.out.println("C1"); }
int m2() { System.out.println("C2"); return 0; }
private void m3() { System.out.println("C3"); }
public void test() {
((TestA)this).m3(); //verify accessibility of TestA.m3
//default package
public class Test {
public static void main(String[] args) {
new lib.TestC().show();
new lib.TestC().test();
Output from Test:
C1
A2
A3
A3
m3 in TestA is accessible from TestC (JLS 6.6.1). Since TestC is a subclass of TestA and TestA.m3 is non-private and accessible from TestC, TestC.m3 overrides TestA.m3 (JLS 8.4.6.1). Since TestC.m3 overrides TestA.m3, TestC.m3 is the method to be invoked (JLS 15.12.4.4).

Hi,
m3 in TestA is accessible from TestC (JLS 6.6.1). Since TestC is a
subclass of TestA and TestA.m3 is non-private and accessible from
TestC, TestC.m3 overrides TestA.m3 (JLS 8.4.6.1). Since TestC.m3
overrides TestA.m3, TestC.m3 is the method to be invoked (JLS
15.12.4.4). The problem is the nasty package visibility (I hate it):
Let's begin ;-)
TestB in fact does not see any of the methods of it's super class,
so it can't override them. It is in a different package.
TestC does see all methods of TestA but none of the methods of TestB.
So it overrides m1(). (TestB does not play any role in this example!!)
m2() and m3() have package visibility, too. Usually you can only
open visibility wider but not restrict visibility. Furthermore
you must not redefine methods with a different return type (m2() of TestC seems to do so, but only seems ;-))).
In fact m2 and m3 of TestC are completely new methods, TestA doesn't
know about.
Clear?
If not, just for fun mark a method of TestA protected or public.
The compiler will cry ...
Regards.

  • Javadoc and private methods

    From the site, I got
    Why aren't private methods being shown in the resulting HTML file?
    By default, the javadoc tool does not include private methods. To include them, run javadoc with the "-private" option.
    Could anyone please tell me how do I do this. I am using NetBeans 5.0.

    I am using NetBeans 5.0.I suppose you are using this - http://javadoc.netbeans.org/
    Then you should see the settings shown in this screenshot
    http://javadoc.netbeans.org/Images/JavadocSettings.png
    There are options to include package and private members. There is also an "Additional Javadoc options" where you could specify the option as suggested by the message "-private"

  • Polymorphism and static methods

    Say I have classes A and B:
    public class A {
         public static A newInstance() {
              return new A();
    public class B
    extends A {
    }How can I write the newInstance method in A so that:
    B.newInstance();returns an object of class B instead of A? I know I can override the method in B to make an object of the right type - but is there a way to write the A method so that the correct type is created by any subclasses?

    I suppose this is cheating...
    class A {
       public static A newInstance(Class c)
       throws InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException {
          return (A) c.newInstance();
    class B extends A {
    class Testx {
       public static void main(String[] args)
       throws InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException {
          B b = (B)B.newInstance(B.class);
          System.out.println(b.getClass().getName());  //B

  • Polymorphism with Overloaded Methods

    I am running into a problem when I try to leverage javas polymorphism with overloaded Methods. Basically, what I am trying to do is iterate through a generic list of properties and call the correct overloaded method on each one based on the type of containing object.
    Here is the general code (4 classes)
    AbstractCronJob  EmailCronJob
    BaseProperty  SubjectLineProperty
    public abstract class BaseProperty implements CronPropertyExecutable{
        public BaseProperty() {
            super();
       public void execute(AbstractCronJob job) {
           System.out.println( "executing on abstract cron job" ) ;
    public class SubjectLineProperty extends BaseProperty {
        public SubjectLineProperty() {
            super();
        public final void execute( EmailCronJob emailCronJob ) {
            System.out.println( "executing on email cron job" ) ;
    public abstract class AbstractCronJob {
        protected int _id ;
        protected PropertyList _propertyList ;
        public AbstractCronJob( int id ) {
            super();
            _id = id ;
            _propertyList = new PropertyList() ;
        protected void createProperties() {
            //fill in with factory crap
            _propertyList.add( new SubjectLineProperty() ) ;
        protected abstract void executeProperties();
        protected abstract void run() ;
        public void execute() {
            createProperties() ;
            executeProperties() ;
            run() ;
    public class EmailCronJob extends AbstractCronJob {
        public EmailCronJob( int id ) {
            super( id ) ;
        /* (non-Javadoc)
         * @see com.reged.cron.AbstractCronJob#run()
        protected void run() {
            //send email
        protected void executeProperties() {
            //we had this as abstract...unless I'm missing something, we can do this
            //in this class instead of pushing it down
            Iterator iter = _propertyList.iterator() ;
            while ( iter.hasNext() ) {
                //safe cast
                BaseProperty baseProperty = ( BaseProperty ) iter.next() ;
                baseProperty.execute( this ) ;
    }Okay, here is the problem that I am running into. The EmailCronJob knows that it has a list of properties, it doesn't know what type of properties it as. So when it iterates through its property list it upcasts then to the BaseProperty parent class. Then it calls the execute method on each property passing in itself.
    I thought that the execute(EmailCronJob job) method in SubjectLineProperty would be executed since the overloaded method with the mailCronJob parameter lives in that class, instead I am finding that the execute(AbstractCronJob job) method in the BaseProperty class is eing exercised.
    I am confused on why this doesn't work. Does polymorphism work with overloaded methods or just overridden methods?
    Thanks!

    We can think about it based on suppositions, satisfactory explanations, and based on OO design.
    According to the experience from the code above, we can suppose that, at runtime, the virtual machine looks for an exact identical signature of an method to perform the overriding.
    But, why does it work in that way? Is there any good justification, or is it just a implementation decision?
    I think there is a good justification.
    Let me get the Object.equals() method as an example, and lets make an analogy with the code above. According to our conclusions from the experience above, that we suppose are right and should work, but actually they should not work, in order to use the equals() method, we can simply do this:
    class TheClass {
      private int whatever;
      public TheClass(int param) {
        whatever = param;
      //notice that the param is not Object
      public boolean equals(TheClass param) {
        //we dont need either to cast to TheClass or
        //verify if the param is an instance of TheClass
        if (this == param) return false;
        if (this.whatever == param.whatever) return true;
        else return false;
    }Apparently, this equals() method above is more efficient, and it does make sense, too, and it would be considered a good and logic implementation of equals() method. Although, these conclusions are wrong, if you consider some OO concepts that are being broken here.
    equals() method is defined in Object class as an contract, like an interface. It says that this method must receive an Object param. And according to this contract, two instances of Object can use this method. You have to obey this contract, because it is Oriented Object Programming.
    If you use equals method without passing Object as an parameter, but passing other different class (like TheClass, in my example), you would not obey the contract, that says that two instances of Object can use this method. Try to do this:
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        TheClass theClass1 = new TheClass(1);
        TheClass theClass2 = new TheClass(1);
        //Good, more or less, because our objective, that is,
        //calling the customized equals(), will be performed.
        System.out.println(theClass1.equals(theClass2));
        String str = "blah";
        //oops! The customized equals() method will not
        //be called this time
        System.out.println(theClass1.equals(str));
        Object obj1 = theClass1;
        Object obj2 = theClass2;
        //Again, the customized equals() method will not
        //be called this time. Thanks God it works in this way!
        //Because if the customized equals() method
        //could be called here, the "OO law"
        //and the "contract" of equals method
        //defined in Object class would be broken
        System.out.println(obj1.equals(obj2));
    }Therefore, I think Java working in this way is good, because it obligates us to "obey the laws", in certain way.

  • I want to transfer all my iPhoto, iTunes, contacts, etc. files from my MacBook, which I am selling to a MacBook Pro. What is the easiest and safest method of achieving this? Can the files backed up on Time Machine be transferred to the Pro?.

    I want to transfer all my iPhoto, iTunes, contacts,documents, etc. files from my MacBook, which I am selling, to a MacBook Pro. What is the easiest and safest method of achieving this? Can the files backed up on Time Machine from the MacBook be transferred to the Pro in some way? I would like to capture the files as they appear on the MacBook, such as "Events" in iPhoto and the various song categories within iTunes without having to rename them all once saved on the Pro, which is the case with photos when I simply save them to thumb drive and import them to the Pro. Sny advice would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Rob.

    Michael,
                 Thanks for all your assistance. There is no need for apologies, Migration Assistant did indeed create a second account for the MacBook data. It has just taken me some time to figure out how to access it. I now have all the MB data in one account and the MBP files in another, which suits me fine. In fact, it is an advantage in my case as it keeps the private and business aspects separated.
    I will however try the fatcatsoftware to transfer all the iPhoto files to my iMac, where I keep my main photo library. and it will be of help to keep the events, etc in the transfer. As far as iTunes is concerned, I have HomeSharing on all my computers and this has obviated the need to worry about playlists being transferred successfully. However, HomeSharing did not appear to share the iPhone/iPod apps that were stored on the MB and although these have now come across with the new MacBook account on the MBP, I was wondering whether my iPhone and iPod will be recognised by the MBP and sync with it? Will I need to have the MB account open to achieve this or will the MBP recognise and sync with the iPhone/iPod automatically irrespective of which account is open?
    Thanks for the tip on deauthorising my iTunes account from the MB before sellng. This I will do and I believe the best way to remove all of my data from the hard drive is to reinstall the MacOSX operating system software. Is this the right approach to securely delete everything?
    Thanks again for sharing your expertise and your guidance through this exercise.
    Best regards,
    Rob.

  • Is there a way to place an encrypted document on the iPhone, a document that contains passwords and private information, really well protected from hackers?

    Is there a way to place an encrypted document on the iPhone, a document that contains passwords and private information, really well protected from hackers?
    Can such a document be exempted from the cloud feature, a feature that I use for the rest of my stuff?
    If so, how can I do this?

    Yeah, but 1Password charges for both the iPhone client AND the Mac/Windows client, and it ain't cheap! Plus, it only syncs via Dropbox, and where I work Dropbox is banned due to security concerns.
    Sure, there is Secure Notes, a free form entry part of 1Password, but a bug in the program will not let you view all the text you can put in the field!! You have to EDIT the text to see the whole list! What if you accidentally delete or change an entry while scrolling through your entries??
    Plus NONE of the programs I have tried, and I have tried a lot, can find text IN the file - do a search and it will tell you what file/folder the text is in, but YOU have to scroll down through 400 entries one at a time looking for the entry.
    I use a program called Secure Text - I have many admin passwords, and DO not need a field based program. Secure Text is totally freeform entry. However, it suffers from the same search issue.
    If someone knows of a secure text program that uses a file/folder type of layout, free form entry, AND can actually tell you where in the file/folder the text you searched for is, PLEASE let me know! Plus sycing via some method other than Dropbox would be a plus.
    Before I got my iPhone, I used a program called Tombo for my WinCE based system AND my Windows workstation, and the synced up fine without iTunes, internet, DropBox type functionality or any of that horsecoller stuff Apple likes to throw on your neck.

  • How to call a private method in a JFrame

    I have a Frame which has some properties like its size, bgcolor plus other parameters, as instance variables. There is a button on the Frame with the caption : "set properties". When one clicks on that button, a new frame should appear via which a user can change the values of the parameters of the main Frame (i.e size, bgcolor,..etc). The user would input the new values in the textfields or radio buttons that are on the new frame, and then click a submit button, which has to exist on the same NFrame. How can I do that so that when the submit button is pressed, the parameters values are updated and so is the display view ?
    I made it this way : I created 2 classes, the main frame and the new Frame. I made the new Frame an instance variable of the main Frame. When the user clicks the " set properties" button on the main Frame, the new Frame is shown. The user enters new values for some of the parameters and clicks submit. The parameters in the new Frame are updated. UP TO HERE EVERYTHING WENT JUST FINE. Now, there is a private method in the main frame that changes the color, size, ...etc of the main frame according to the values stored in the instance variables color, size,...etc. THE QUESTION IS: How can the new Frame display the changes after the values have been updated ? That is, how can it call the "private" method in the main class?? Should the new class be a child class of the main class to be able to access it's private methods ??

  • Creation of a static class with private methods

    I'm new to java programming and am working on a project where I need to have a static class that does a postage calculation that must contain 2 private methods, one for first class and one for priority mail. I can't seem to figure out how to get the weight into the class to do the calculations or how to call the two private methods so that when one of my other classes calls on this class, it retrieves the correct postage. I've got all my other classes working correct and retrieving the information required. I need to use the weight from another class and return a "double". Help!!!

    here is the code for the private method call.
        call method create_bdc_dynpro
             importing  IM_PROGRAM = 'SAPMF02K'
                        IM_DYNPRO = '0100'.
    code of the method
      data: wa_bdcdata type bdcdata.
      CLEAR wa_bdcdata.
      wa_bdcdata-program = im_program.
      wa_bdcdata-dynpro = im_dynpro.
      wa_bdcdata-dynbegin = at_true.
      APPEND wa_bdcdata to at_bdcdata.
    Hope you can help
    Thanks!

    Howdy,
    I think you have your importing/exporting the wrong way round.
    The method call should be:
    call method create_bdc_dynpro
    exporting IM_PROGRAM = 'SAPMF02K'
    IM_DYNPRO = '0100'.
    And of course in the method definition they should be importing parameters.
    Cheers
    Alex

  • Extending classes with private methods?

    my understanding of extending classes is that you gain all the functions and methods of that class thus You could over ride any one of them. How ever I am confused on weather or not you inherit and can over ride private methods of the class you are extending or if you have to have all methods public in an extended class.
    hope that makes sense, an example can bee seen bellow.
    package
         public class Class1
              public function apples():void
                   //some code
              private fnctuin bananas():void
                   //more code
    package
         public class Class2 extends Class 1
              override public function apples():void
                   //i changed code
              //can I over ride bananas?

    you can only override methods that would be inherited.  a private method won't be inherited:

  • Using mutator and accessor methods in main.

    Would somebody explain to me exactly how mutator and accessor methods make a class and it's driver program work together. I understand the principle of encapsulation, but I'm obviously missing something. I get the syntax, but what actually happens? I'm hoping a fresh perspective on it will help me understand better.
    I guess another way to ask the question could be: how do you use accessor and mutator methods in the main program that calls them?

    >
    the assignment says to have a
    "reasonable set of accessor and mutator methods
    whether or not you use them". So in my case I have
    them written in the class but do not call them inthe
    driver program. And like I said, the program does
    what it's supposed to do.This class you're in worries me. I'm sure what
    polytropos said is true: they're trying to make you
    think about reuse. But adding to an API without cause
    is widely considered to be a mistake, and there are
    those who are strongly opposed to accessors/mutators
    (or worse, direct field access) on OOP design grounds.The class is based on the book Java: Introduction to Computer Science and Progamming, by Walter Savitch. Until now I've been pretty happy with it. Another problem, to me anyway, is that so far we've done a few, cumulative programming projects per chapter. This time, there was one assignment for the whole chapter that is suppsoed to incorporate everything. But that's just me complaining.
    Here is the code I have and that it looks like I'll be turning in... criticisms welcome.
    Here is the class:
    public class GradeProgram//open class

  • Why do we need get and set methods?

    It is considered good design practice to keep all class data private and
    provide get and set methods for accessing the data in a controlled
    manner.
    So, instead of directly accessing the class data, you use getter and setters.
    I do not really feel the need to use get and set methods.
    How does that achieve encapsulation when ultimately the class data is being exposed?

    A couple of reasons why to use get and set:
    1. For example you can set an int value for month, if a user sets this to somting
    higher than 12 (or 11 if it's zero based) you want to handle that by either
    throwing an exception or adding a year for every time it can be devided by 12.
    If you dont do it in set you'll have a whole bunch of methods that might need to
    correct the value before retreiving the eventual date.
    2. If for some reason you have security set up for certain values you can
    implement this in the get method. When this is done somewhere else you have
    a whole bunch of methods retreiving the info in other classes that need to check
    first. (a canGet method could allso be used). Another good reason to use get
    is when the information needs to be converted depending on the consumer
    calling the get method.
    3. If any logic in 1 or 2 changes you'll have a bunch of code to change.
    If you feel there is no need to implement any security, error handling (on
    compiling because get and set might throw something) or validation when
    setting/getting these values there is still the argument of readabillity.
    Eclipse has a feature that will generate getters and setters for you so it's not
    like there is a lot of extra typing involved.
    Got interupted whyle typig so sorry to repeat any answer given before.

  • Call Enterprise Bean (or Database) from private Method in Session-Bean

    Hi Everybody,
    I've a question regarding the possibility to call an dependency injected EJB in an private method of a session bean.
    Imagine the following.
    @Stateless
    public class SomeBean implements SomeLocal{
       @EJB
       private AnotherLocal anotherBean;
       /** Will be called from a web-app via delegate layer */
       @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttribute.RequiresNew)
       public void someBusisnessMethod(){
           String something = this.getSomeThing();
           //Do more
       private String getSomeThing(){
          return anotherBean.aMethodWhichCallsTheEntityManager();
    }I've to refactor code with uses such Call-Hierachy and I want to know whether this is a correct way? Somebody told me that such stuff should not be made, and I quess he told me an explanation, why not to do such stuff, but unfortunally I've forgotten that. Do someone have a suggestion why not to do this? Could it blow the application to hell? Is there any difference to the following code (The way I would have done it)?
    @Stateless
    public class SomeBean implements SomeLocal{
       @EJB
       private AnotherLocal anotherBean;
        @Resource
        private SessionContext sessionContext;
       /** Will be called from a web-app via delegate layer */
       @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttribute.RequiresNew)
       public void someBusisnessMethod(){
           SomeLocal self = this.sessionContext.getBusinessObject(SomeLocal.class);
           String something = self.getSomeThingBusinessMethod();
           //Do more
       @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttribute.Required)
       public String getSomeThingBusinessMethod(){
          return anotherBean.aMethodWhichCallsTheEntityManager();
    }

    Found the answer by myself....
    Here it is if someone might have the same question:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3381002 or if the link may down sometime the content of the answer...
    >
    The motivation here is that most EJB implementations work on proxies. You wouldn't be too far off in thinking of it as old-school AOP. The business interface is implemented by the EJB container, quite often via a simple java.lang.reflect.Proxy, and this object is handed to everyone in the system who asks for the ejb via @EJB or JNDI lookup.
    The proxy is hooked up to the container and all calls on it go directly to the container who will preform security checks, start/stop/suspend transactions, invoke interceptors, etc. etc. and then finally delegate the call to the bean instance -- and of course do any clean up required due to any exceptions thrown -- then finally hand the return value over through the proxy to the caller.
    Calling this.foo() directly, or passing 'this' to a caller so they can make direct calls as well, will skip all of that and the container will be effectively cut out of the picture. The 'getBusinessObject(Class)' method allows the bean instance to essentially get a proxy to itself so it can invoke its own methods and make use of the container management services associated with it -- interceptors, transaction management, security enforcement, etc.
