Pop up 'open file' box everytime i open preview

This is driving me crazy.
It has an option to open a file from either icloud or my mac. I don't want to open a file. I just want to open preview.
I would also like to take a screen shot but this pop up box is making it impossible to do.
Any help please?

  • Save/open  file box

I would like to make a pop up box that given a path to a file on a disk can do either:
save File: <path to the file> (new location)
    or
Open File <path to the file> (with a matching application)
I have tried modifying the code from this tutorial:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/examples/components/FileChooserDemoProject/src/components/FileChooserDemo.java
But I can't seem to specify the file that is already located on the disk.
Open File can be done using Desktop.browse(URI), but how do I create a FileChooser box with two buttons for saving or opening a file already on disk?

So you have a file which is already on disk? And you want to present the user with an option whereby he can "save" that file, which is already on disk, to some other location on disk? This sounds peculiar already... how exactly does that work in your proposed design? Do you just tell the user where the file is and then display a standard save dialog which tells you where you're going to copy the file to? (Or move it, if that's what "save" means in your terminology?)
Usually a save dialog is used for the user to select the file where your program will save data that's in memory. You've used save dialogs before, surely? Every text editor uses them.
And this idea of a dialog which allows the user to do two different things, that's kind of peculiar too. If it were me I would have two buttons, Save and Open. The Save button would open the save dialog, the Open button would open the open dialog.
And if you hadn't already figured it out, an open dialog doesn't actually open the file selected. It just allows the user to select a file and passes that file back to its caller. It's the caller's responsibility to do whatever "open" means to it.
Likewise a save dialog doesn't actually save the selected file. It just allows the user to select a file, then the caller actually does the saving to that file.
You'll find programming much easier if you do things in the normal way just like everyone else. If you do it differently, then first of all you can't use the standard tools and you find yourself floundering, trying to modify them or rewrite them or bend them out of shape. And second of all, your users will be confused by a non-standard interface.
And don't tell me you're thinking "outside the box" when you do things in a strange way. First you need to know where the box is and how it works. Then you'll be able to think outside it.

  • Freeze during column view in finder and open file box?

Whenever I open a file and the open file dialog box is in column view it freezes when I click on the file and the view shifts to reveal the icon and info. It happens a lot in finder too, but not as often. It usually doesn't start happening for a few minutes after I reboot.
I'm pretty sure quicktime is associated with that icon/image preview. I just formatted my hard drive hoping that would help but it doesn't. I have to force quit applications alot if I forget to get out of column view...someone please help!
I don't remember this happening before I installed macromedia studio 8, but I'm not sure. I have to use those programs.

  • How to change the prompt message in a open file box

    Hello
In my VI the user has to introduce several file path. They are sequenced so we know which one is requested. Is there an easy way to change the message on the "choose file to read" window in order to have "choose xxx file to read" etc... Is this through some VB programming or does labview have some tools for that ?

    There are two solutions:
OBN's solution uses a function to get the file name.
My solution uses the file control. You have to click on the browse button to select the file.
Both solutions will open the system Open File dialog where the user can select the file. OBN's solution is more obvous to change the parameters. In my solution you have to use property nodes.
See the VI (LV7.0) how my solution works.

  • TextEdit no longer opens files it used to open just fine.

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, TextEdit has been giving me an error message when I try to open various text files: "The document “CRD-FONT.TXT” could not be opened. Text encoding Unicode (UTF-8) isn’t applicable."
I wish I knew how to set TextEdit to open the file anyway. I am sure it can be done; it used to open these files just fine. The files didn't change.
I had to download and install another company's editor just so I could open files that I used to work with in TextEdit. It's good to have the other editor, but it'd be great if TextEdit went back to being able to open these files without complaint.
Is there a setting in prefs that would resolve this? I may have changed a setting without realizing it would cause this.

Sounds like there's something wrong with the file, though what that might be I'm not sure. I don't know enough about encodings to know, but sounds like there's probably a mismatch between the file's encoding and what the file claims its encoding is.
Try opening it with [TextWrangler|http://www.barebones.com/products/TextWrangler>, then choose Edit -> Document Options and see what the encoding is reported to be there.

  • Interactive Buttons - Open File - How do I open a file in a "new" window?

Running CS5 and I'm working on an interactive document.  I have created a Button and my Action is to "Open File" and I've selected the applicable file.  When I export to PDF and click on that button, it opens the file but not in a new window so I lose my original source PDF.
I know that I can do these actions in Acrobat but I'd prefer to do all my actions in InDesign so I don't have to keep going back and forth.
    Thanks!!

I believe it has to be done with a JavaScript in Acrobat. It cannot be done in InDesign. You might ask in the Acrobat forum for more information.

  • Double-clicking to open files stops working after opening lots of files.

When I double-click a file it will open the file in CS6 version 13.0.1, but then after a while double-clicking will no longer open jpeg or raw files.  I can open the same files by going to File > Open in the Menu Bar.
When I am simply opening downloaded files from my camera, I can open 200-300 by double-clicking with no problems.  However, at times when I am working on an image, it is not long before I can't open a file by double-clicking.  It will open a blank Photoshop window, but without any Toolbar or Menu Bars.
This happens on a regular basis.  Sometimes, also, Photoshop is slow to Quit, for no apparent reason.
Is anyone aware of this problem?

    Still having this problem.
If I open a jpeg and just change the name, then Save As to a folder, I can then open another jpeg by double-clicking.
However, whenever I open a jpeg and make changes to the image in Photoshop, then Save As to a folder, I can then no longer open a jpeg by double-clicking.  Photoshop will open, but the jpeg will not open.
Since this only happens after making changes to a jpeg in Photoshop, it seems to me the problem is with something in Photoshop, and has nothing to do with my OS.

  • Keynote not opening file.  I've opened it many times, but now it says "because it isn't a valid Keynote document."

I have spent months working on this file and it is a very extensive project.  I can't possibly redo it, so I really need some help with this.  I have to be able to open this file.  I've even transferred it to other drives, but it's the same error message.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!  Thanks in advanced!

I have encountered something similar and trying to remember how I resolved it.
It may go back to file typing or OSX's privileges, or they may simply be corrupted.
In the 1st 2 cases, you can try changing the file type away from whatever it is and then try to match it against the files that actually open. FileBuddy is a good utility for this.
OSX's permissions are positively screwy sometimes. I have had read/write access set in the information and it still won't let me edit or open files, usually after a clean and/or change of User it straightens itself out.
Try repairing permissions in DiskUtility, and run DiskWarrior and TechTools Pro over your harddrive. This unfortunately takes time.
This is definitely the least favorite part of OSX's UNIX for me.
If they are corrupted nothing much you can do except take preventative measures against this next time. Get yourself a dual drive RAID harddrive like Western Digitals MyBook Pro and use OSX's TimeMachine.
I am sceptical about TimeMachine but I guess it can't hurt to try it.

  • Open files from terminal (gnome-open doesn't work properly)

How can I open files from terminal? On Ubuntu, I used xdg-open. On Arch, I have gnome-open, but I can only open directories with that, not files directly. This sucks bucause I like navigating through my files using the terminal instead of a file manager, which doesn't make that much sense if files can't be opened directly.

  • Have MacBook Air, double clicking on track pad won't open files in finder but opens mail and links, and internet sites

I have a MacBook Air.  I can not open up files in the finder when I double click on the track pad.  Double clicking does open up mail, internet, links, etc.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Ok I have found on a different thread how to setup/register the file path association in the classes root.  What I don't understand is how my program will know what the input file is.  For example, the reg setting is C:/.../MyProgram.exe %1
When my program loads, is the %1 in the argc/argv part of the main thread? And if so, how do I debug/test this?
