Portlet content organized with folders

I would like to create a portlet that is similar in functionality to the Favorites portlet. I was able to do this using content areas and URL items in 9.1, but am unable to figure it out using 10g.
Here's what I would like to do:
Create a portlet that contains URLs, organized within folders. I want the folders to open up inside the same portlet (instead of opening a new page).
I have been trying page groups, pages, subpages, categories - but cannot achieve the results I am looking for. Any suggestions? Thanks! -- Rhonda

hi rhonda,
do you want to display something like the browser favorites ?
if yes i suggest to use an HTML portlet. save your favorites as html file and display it as an iFrame in the HTML portlet. this ensures that if you clicke a link it is displayed in the same portlet area.
if misunderstood your requirements it would be great if you could describe in more detail what you are trying to achieve.
regards,
christian

• Organizing with Folders vs Projects vs Albums vs Stacked Photos

Question - Longtime Apple user, but relatively new to Aperture. Working on organizing a large collection of photographs, and am debating whether to organize by Project and grouping similar Projects into folders, or whether to use Projects as my major subdivisions, and organizing within projects using Albums or Stacks.
I realize that there's probably no right answer, so I'm hoping that anybody reading this note could take a quick minute to share the philosophy they apply to organization, as well as any concrete advantages or drawbacks to Projects, Folders, Albums, or their own method.
Thanks for sharing!
Mark

Projects are, imho, badly misnamed. Aperture was designed with the general plan that one shoot would be one Project. Projects have one salient characteristic (which separates them from other ways of grouping images) -- each Master must be in a Project, and can be in only one Project. Because of the above, you should conceive of Projects as the master (small "m") and enduring holding bin of your shots. I think of them as boxes, or as binders ("binders" implying, somehow, something more long-term than "album").
However you end up organizing your collection in Aperture, the one method I recommend against is using Projects as your major subdivisions. They weren't designed to be used this way, they shouldn't have more than a few hundred Masters in them, and you are likely to outgrow that system of organization.
I stick with "one shoot = one Project". If I have three separate shoots on one card, I import the files in three separate sets, each with the Masters specially re-named, into three separate Projects. I then use folders to organize my Projects. I use Albums for sub-sets of Projects with more than 60 or so images -- I do a lot of my processing by Project, and I find 60 images is about the most I can easily handle at once. I use Albums also for actual projects (small "p") -- e.g.: a series of cards for sale, or work for a client.
All images are keyworded (again, a per-Project task). I use color labels to indicate the level of development of an image. I use stars to indicate the value of an image (rejected, not yet rated, best of stack, worth keeping, among the best in Project, worth publishing, excellent).
Keywords, color labels, ratings, and Project names give me enormous specificity in creating Smart Albums, which I do extensively.
Additionally, I do three things which I think are uncommon.
. I move my Projects according to the status of their development, and
. I separate my intake, storage, and processing areas from my output areas, and
. I never use Folders to organize by date.
I do this because for me Aperture's two overall functions are best treated separately. Those two overall functions are, generally, Intake and Output, or to be more specific, "Import, Develop, and Store" and "Gather for export, Prepare for publication, and Export". The top-level folders in my Library are
. Administration Smart Albums
. Raw (inputs)
. Cold Storage
. To Serve
Admin Smarties includes "5-stars", "Managed Masters older than 45 days", "Masters Missing", "Printed 17x22", "Re-take", and the like.
"Raw" is the top-level of a folder tree which includes "Just Imported", "Described not Stacked", "Stacked not Keyworded", "Keyworded not Picked", and "Picked not filed". I move my Projects into the appropriate folder. Note that this works well in Projects view -- one can drill down to any level of the Library tree and see at a glance which Projects are where.
"Cold Storage" is where I put all fully-processed Projects (and remember, for me "Project" just means "Shoot" -- if you ever used a non-digital camera, same as a box of slides or a sleeve of photos). I organize these as I see fit. I try to put Projects where I think I will look for them. Clients have their own folder(s). Other photographers have their own folders. On the personal side, I have folders for Portraits of friends, Family, Events, Trips, Indoors, Urban outdoors, Rural outdoors, Close-ups, Test shots, etc. Each of these is further subdivided. I have an entire folder sub-branch just for fine art still-lifes.
The last of the top-level folders holds a large sub-set of folders for output. None of these folders have Projects in them (Projects, for me, are +storage containers+, not output containers). I create a folder for each output project (small "p"), and use Albums as needed. In theory, every image that shows in the output side of my Aperture structure should already have been selected ("picked") and optimally developed as an image (the rating and label tell me the status of the image). What is left for me to do is final selection, pre-press, and export.
No where in my Library structure is any accommodation made to date (other than the "one shoot = one Project rule). The is no reason to organize an Aperture Library by date -- date organization is hard-coded into Aperture at both the Project and the Image level. Since it is already hard-coded into Aperture, I prefer to use the Library organization tools to create a storage and output structure which gives me a level of utility on top of date organization.
In general, I keep my Projects view (the Viewer, not the Inspector) grouped by Library folders and sorted by date (most recent first). If I want to view all my shoots (Projects) by date, I simply ungroup them in Project view. If I want to view them by year, I click the "Year" grouping icon. I find Project view, and the built-in grouping options, quite useful.
When I need to view all of my photos in date order I simply use "Photos" view. Note the sophisticated filtering options available using the "Date" and "Calendar" rules. In general, I set Photos view to sort by either "Import Session" or "Date -- Descending". I regularly use List view when in Photos view.
I complete my set-up with specific file-naming and Project-naming conventions. The important thing here is consistency -- set it up right from the get-go, and stick to it rigorously, and you won't have to second-guess your searches or filters.
Hope that helps. It's a lot of overhead -- but I have and take a lot of shots, I work in spurts, and I valued a system which would let me start and stop at nearly any time and always let me know +by structure+ the status of any shot or image or Project or project -- while remaining flexible and expandable.
My example should at least give you some ropes to use as you simultaneously shape and climb your Aperture mountain. I strongly recommend setting up a practice Library using, say, 10% of your images, and using to for a couple of weeks, tweaking it as you go, before "casting it in stone" and importing your entire collection. Aperture is broad and powerful -- take the time to know and understand it, and you will find your use of it immensely rewarding.
Good luck.

• I just purchased an iPad 3 and it works great with most of my email accounts, but with an imap account from school it will download the content of the folders in the account, but doesn't download the messages in the inbox.

Hi,
I just purchased an iPad 3 and it works great with most of my email accounts, but with an imap account from school it will download the content of the folders in the account, but doesn't download the messages in the inbox. I have deleted and created the account several times. I have checked the status of the account and it's active and works either from safari or from my Mac or iPhone. I have turned off both my Mac and my iPhone as not to have competing devices, I can even send emails from the account successfully. It simply won't download the content of the inbox. Help!

Hi Csound1, thanks. The email host is 1and1.co.uk, however, i am going to fess up and make myself look like a plonker now -
the email account in question was set up in Outlook as POP - stupid, stupid, stupid me, wasted an afternoon on this!  I have now changed the Outlook account to IMAP and Mail.app works perfectly - and looks much nicer than Outlook did.  Im in the middle of converting from Windows to a Mac, and still finding my way around the Mac
The lesson learned, never assume - always double  check!  All my other email addresses with 1and1 are all imap, except this one, and it happened to be the first one I set up in the Mail.app. (bows head in disgrace!)
Thank you anyway for attempting to help me!
Cheers

• Is there any list for out of the box portlets that come with portal installation.

Is there any list for out of the box portlets that come with portal installation?
Ramesh

Yes - it's in the online help, on the Learning About Your Portal : About Portlets page. Here is the content:
Portlets Created Upon Install
The following portlets (and their necessary portlet Web services and Remote Servers) are created when you install the portal:
Folder Expertise:This portlet displays the list of folders for which the user is an expert. It is added to the User Profile page by default.
General Information:This portlet displays the default Profile Page. It is added to the User Profile page default.
Managed Communities:This portlet displays the list of communities managed by the user. It is added to the User Profile page by default.
Portal Login:This portlet allows users to log in to the portal. You probably want to add this to the guest user's home page so that users can log in from the default page displayed when they navigate to your portal.
Portal Search:This portlet allows users to search your portal and access their saved searches. Users might want to add this to their home page for easy access to their saved searches.
The following portlet templates (and any necessary portlet web Services and Remote Servers) are created when you install the portal:
Community Links:This template is used by the portal to create portlets that display the links saved in a Community Knowledge Directory folder. To learn more about Community Links Portlets, see Community Links Portlets.
Content Snapshot:This template is used by the portal to create portlets that display the results of a Snapshot Query.
You can also install the following functionality as part of the Optional Enterprise Web Components:
[urlStored Content:This portlet template allows you to create portlets that display stored content that is periodically refreshed. You might use this type of portlet to display content that is resource-intensive or takes a long time to generate. To learn more about Stored Content portlets, see Stored Content Portlets.
[urlXML Source:This portlet template allows you to create portlets that can collect XML content from an external source and display it in the portal as HTML. To learn more about XML Source portlets, see XML Source Portlets.

• My music is already organized in folders.  Need help!

I have a ton of music already organized into complete albums in separate folders on my computer (as well as some large folders like "VH1's top 100 One Hit Wonders"). When I import it into iTunes it uses id3 tags to try to sort it and I wind up with a pile of unusable junk because the songs could be from all over the place and the tags could say they were from a number of different albums. This is particularly crappy when I have a song that's on a DJ mixed album with various artists. For the life of me I can't play that complete album in iTunes. Is there a way to automatically use my folder names as names of playlists and the contents of the folders for those playlists themselves? I think this may be a workaround or I'd love to have other suggestions. I presently use an iRiver iHP-140 and simply brows the folder names for albums. This is an infinitely simple way of doing it and I would very much like to continue it since I want to upgrade to the 60gb iPod and if I did I couldn't find my music to play it under the present circumstances. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is there a way to automatically use my folder names as names of playlists and the contents of the folders for those playlists themselves?
Nope.
You might be able to import an M3U file as a playlist though. Worth a try.

I have 300 apps organized in folders on my ipod touch 4th gen, and connected my iphone 4, these apps have copied over but none have been placed in folders, any ideas how to replicate folders from ipod to iphone...?

What may work is to restore the iPhone fom the backup of the iPod.  However, if the two devices ahve different apps that come with the device, that may mess up some of the folders.

• Out of the box porlets for Content Management with BEA Portal

I am looking at BEA Portal for a simple Intranet site with some basic content management system capabilities. I would like to implement this without the use of a third party tool and wanted to know if there are any open source or out of the box BEA portlets/web-apps with basic CMS capabilities beyond what has been shown in the Portal tutorials around CMS. From doing the tutorials, I have learned how to manage content, and how to build a site from scratch to access the content using the <cm:> tags. However, without additional third party products such as Documentum or Interwoven, is there any free BEA/open source portlets to:
- Configure exposure of this content in a runtime framework? (ie content manager can expose new content from the repository by a configurable admin GUI, place where this content is on the page)
- Allow for a simple approval workflow where content that gets added to the repository by user A has to be approved by user B before automatically exposing?
Interested to know if custom portal type development is the only way to do these kind of simple functions, or third party product.

Hi,
Did you have a chance to look into WebLogic Portal 8.1 SP3? Check out the new Library Services features, which includes versioning and simple approval:

• How to Merge the Contents of Two Folders in Lion, Keeping the Newer Versions of Duplicate Files.

Select and copy all the contents of the folder containing the newer files.  Paste the files ONTO the folder containing the older files.  The unique files will be copied into the older folder without further ado.  For the duplicates, a window will appear warning that a file with the same name already exists in the older folder.  Check the "Apply to All" box and click on the Replace button, not the Skip button.  These steps will merge all the files in the newer folder into the older folder, replacing the duplicates with the copies from the newer folder.
Unfortunately, the only information that the warning window provides about the duplicates is their common name, not sizes, dates, or times.  These steps worked for me because I knew for certain that all the newer files were in one folder.

Great, I just lost 10 GB of data thanks to OSX folder merge... because appaerantly I should have known better not to keep a subfolder inside my folder I was trying to merge
I can not beleive more people don't have a problem with this. Merge contents in Lion does NOT merge contents if 1 or more of those supposed "contents" is a subfolder
Merge contents of two folders only works for files, it does NOT work for subfolders!!!!
Can we please get this acknowledged as a bug that needs fixing?
EXAMPLE:
Drive1 / Folder1
                   - text1.txt
                   - text2.txt
                   - / subfolder / text3.text
MERGE TO
Drive2 / Folder1
                   - text1.txt  (this gets updated / merged)
                   - text2.txt  (this gets updated / merged)
                   - / subfolder /
                             - text.txt
                             - text2.txt     (this should get text3.txt merged into it, from Drive1, but instead this subfolder is REPLACED, and NOT MERGED!!)
Why would i want to replace a folder if I'm trying to merge it!?
Almost 2013 and OSX still cant merge a folder? unbelievable

• Iphoto library transfer not organized in folders

My Mac book pro HD was full and I wanted a larger 500GB HDD. I had Best Buy swap out the old drive for a new HDD.
I needed to transfer my iphoto collection to my computer ( with the new high capacity HDD ). I used a adaptor to conncect the now externalized HDD to the mac book pro. It was recognized. I was able to then tranfer my photos from the library to the desktop of my mac book pro (all 12000 pictures and videos ). I then dragged this to iphotos and all 12000 pictures transferred sucessfully. The problem is that I had all of these pictures organized by folders with event names and dates. They did not transfer over like this. All 12000 came over into a single event folder arranged in random order.
HELP! Is there a way to fix this. I need all of these 12000 pictures organized like they were ...in about 200 or so event folders.
The externalized HDD is now unreadable! Dont know what happened to it but now when I connect it, the mac book does not recognize it and it is unreadable..maybe this can be fixed and it still has all of my folders on it with my pictures organized.
I still have the photos sitting in my desk top as well ( from the original tranfer as I did save then to the desk top thankfully )
Any advise is appreciated
Thank you

You do not provide details of how you transfered the iPhoto library - the correct way is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
You do not transfer photos and you do not import anything - just drag the iPhoto library package accross and open it with iPhoto

Hi!
I´m creating a ContentiView with out filter and pointing it to a document Folder, when the user access the iView this message appears:

The folder you are looking for has no displayable content.
You can try one of the following:
Access the folder using the Navigation user interface.
Access the folder as a Web folder. Your operating system and browser dictate whether or not this will work.
And when I click on "Access the folder using the Navigation user interface." then I can see the folder structure and its contents really nice.
is there a way to configure the iView that allways display the content this way with out the user clicking on the "Access the folder using the Navigation user interface." option. ?
Thanx in advanced!

Hi,
I resolved the problem using a KM Navigation iView, this iView has the functionality I was looking for and this displays the folders and then the content of the folders if we click on the folder. with the edit etc etc functionality.

• Change Portlet Content item in 9.0.2.

Hi
If I add a few images to a page, and I go to the categorie page where these images are stored, I can't see these images.
Instead I see a lot of information about these images (create date, page group,...)which i don't want to see.
On this categorie page all the items are stored in a "portlet content" item.
Is there a way to change the settings of this "portlet content" item?
greetings

Hi
The changing of relative to absolute is the one that bothers me. I think it also added line breaks, which caused problems with gaps appearing between images.
The other one I remember is adding <tbody> tags to a table.
I would prefer it if one could prevent the editor from making any changes in the HTML whatsoever. As an option maybe.
Is it possible to create a simple HTML item as a shared component that one could drop into any page?
Regards
Harry
What changes are you seeing?
I know that the editor converts relative links to absolute links (a bug has been logged for this and the issue is mentioned in the release notes).

• How can i compare the contents of two folders ?

how can i compare the contents of two folders and find out which files are in one but not in the other?? Knowing how to do this would be the best thing ever, especially when dealing with a large number of files. Often, for instance, I'm dealing with a large number of images, processing them, and saving the retouched ones to a new folder, and need to check that they are all there. If there are say three files missing in the second folder (out of say a hundred in total) being able to automate the process of elimination would be very useful. Please help!!!
B

I really wish I knew the answer to this. I work between two macs, a G5 and MacBook Pro when I'm on the go. Each time I move from one to the other I have to copy all my files to the computer I'm going to work on, so I end up with the same files being duplicated. It's not a problem if it's not much data but in my case the it can be to 30GB, mostly graphics files, photoshop, motion, final cut pro, etc.
There's has got to be a way automator can make a comparison between two folders to sort out what's changed and what's remained the same. It would be nice also if this feature could be done globally on the hard disk using spotlight's technology to stop files being duplicated in places you didn't even know about and taking up valuable disk space. I'm not sure how this could be done.
Any bright ideas Apple?

• Organizing with the photo library folder on hard drive

I am a teacher, and I was told that I should NOT do any organizing within the actual iphoto library folder on the hard drive b/c this could corrupt my picture files. I do understand how to use iphoto itself as a photo organizer, but it is frustrating when trying to locate a picture for use in a Word document. Therefore, it made sense to me to organize the folder in the hard drive into the same categories as in my iphoto library. Is there an official ruling from Apple on this? Is this not a recommended practice? How in the world can anyone find the photo they need when you can't drag directly from the iphoto library? Thanks for any help you can give me!!

If your photos are properly organized in folders and albums, locating a picture is a snap. In fact, that's precisely where iPhoto shines. I honestly don't understand your difficulty.

Using the finder to muck around in the library is an invitation to bleeding ulcers. This forum has posts daily from users asking for help in undoing the damage they've done to the library. In both the iPhoto "Help" screens and in the Technical Articles available at this site you'll find the words: "If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise tamper with files or folders in the iPhoto Library folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in iPhoto."

Well, let's say that I want a photo of Uncle Joe that was taken on Thanksgiving Day, 2004. I open iPhoto and open the 2004 folder. From inside "2004," I open the Thanksgiving album and look for Uncle Joe. When I find a pic that I like, I drag it to the desktop (or wherever else I want it) and a copy is made for me lickity split.

The 2131 usually indicates firmware needs to be updated on a drive.
Head to your drivers and downloads page for your latitude at Dell, and check for updates to your firmware for your optical drives. If you're behind and you update, does that clear up the 2131?

• Can't burn MP3 cd's with folders

just wondering if i'm the only one that has this problem...
my car stereo reads mp3 cd's, and folders make it a dream to navigate thru 130 songs.
problem is i can't get iTunes to burn a cd with folders. it dumps my entire playlist of approximately 130 songs in the root, leaving me to manually thumb thru all 130 songs, instead of being able to skip by folders (ie, a folder for each artist, and a subfolder for each album from that artist).
since i seriously cannot find any way to make that happen, i would assume that iTunes just doesn't give you that option, but i believe that should definitely be an option, giving you the choice to either burn it automatically, or manually configure a folder tree and manipulate all the files in any and every way.
that problem aside, iTunes is by far the best app to rip and burn flawlessly--no coasters. why can't all cd-r/dvd-r apps do this in windows? apple isn't writing the software.
however, apple leaves out a few too many advanced options in my opinion.
please let me know if there's any solution to this--if i'm doing something wrong or not finding it...
or if it's something they might work into the next version.
thanx

I tried to burn an MP3 CD with folders by artist, and something funny happened.
iTunes arbitrarily designates some albums as "compilation" albums.
On my CD, half the artists/albums went into their own folders, and half the artists/albums went into a folder called "Compilations" which contained yet another hierarchy of sub-folders. In this folder, sub-folders were organized by album name and not artist name.
None of my albums seemed to be "compilation" albums and I could find nothing in the MP3 tags that indicated that they were a "compilation".
Albums automatically thrown into the "compilations" category included:
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John
Magazine by Heart
Everything was ripped from commercial CDs that I own, but of course the MP3 tags came from CDDB/Gracenote and I didn't modify any of their designations.
Any insight into why this happened?
BTW, disregard the information below about my Mac. I did this burning on a Dell running Windows XP.
