Portlets Newbie

Hello,
I am new to portlets. I have made a few portlets using JSF. Now I have to include tabbed portlets. I don't know where to start from. Please help me. I am inspired with the portlets at yahoo.com. I am wondering if I can design such interactive portlets. How do I start with tabbed portlets? Please help me by providing me material for this. I am sorry if this is the wrong forum...

How would you create a web page with tabs in it? It is done the same way in a portlet. A portlet is not significantly different from a servlet, the main difference is they can be added to to a page so that a single page can be running several portlets at the same time.
Tabs are really no more then a visual trick. Format a list of link horizontally and style them with rounded edges or what ever visual queue you desire.

  • Newbie question - Portlet development in Portal using JDeveloper

    Hello.
    I've tried to develop a portlet using Oracle JDeveloper, then using it in an Oracle Portal-provided web page.
    I'm so really confused... I don't know where to start!
    Let'say the portlet is a very simple Hello World static html or jsp page.
    What could I do in order to use it in Portal?
    Have I to use jpdk? How?
    Or have I to deploy it in the Application Server home OC4J as a web application?
    Or have I to deploy it in the OC4J_Portal as a web application?
    Or....
    If this helps, here is my platform:
    I'm using Oracle Application Server 10g Portal as middle-tier. It is correlated to an OID/Infrastructure istance wich provides Single SignOn for the applications, based upon an Oracle 9i database, in which runs Oracle Workflow; my needs are to use a Workflow based Java applications in the Oracle Portal as portlets.
    Don't worry: by now, I'm interested in just knowing how to run in the Portal a simple Hello World portlet built with JDeveloper...
    Please, help me.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Umberto,
    Did you have a chance to take a look at the Portal Developer's Guide?
    The Building Java Portlets chapter walks you through the steps you need to take.
    Good luck,

  • Sample  PL/SQL Portlet Source Code for Oracle Portal 9ias

    Hi, I'm a newbie of Oracle Portal technology, and I have a problem:
    I would create a PL/SQL portlet that realizes the following functions:
    1) Retrieve the username of the portal user logged from WWCTX_API.GET_USER function.
    2) Insert into an oracle db table two values about two hidden fields in the HTML FORM of the portlet.
    3) Realize the insert commit through the click on the submit button on the Html form of the portlet. I would redirect by the same button to an other page url also.
    I've never developed in Portal, and may be useful if someone could post me the source code of the SHOW MODE SECTION in the PROCEDURE SHOW of a SAMPLE PL/SQL PORTLET that realizes the upper functions.
    Thanks a lot....

    Hi
    Here's the code from Helloworld_Portlet example:
    procedure show
    p_portlet_record wwpro_api_provider.portlet_runtime_record
    is
    l_portlet wwpro_api_provider.portlet_record;
    begin
    if (not is_runnable(
    p_provider_id => p_portlet_record.provider_id
    ,p_reference_path => p_portlet_record.reference_path)
    ) then
    raise wwpro_api_provider.PORTLET_SECURITY_EXCEPTION;
    end if;
    Retrieve the portlet information.
    l_portlet := get_portlet_info(
    p_provider_id => p_portlet_record.provider_id
    ,p_language => p_portlet_record.language
    if (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_SHOW) then
    if (p_portlet_record.has_title_region) then
    Draw the portlet header and specify what links are available
    from that header (i.e. details, customize, help, and about).
    The has_title property is set at the page region level.
    wwui_api_portlet.draw_portlet_header
    p_provider_id => p_portlet_record.provider_id
    ,p_portlet_id => p_portlet_record.portlet_id
    ,p_title => l_portlet.title
    ,p_has_details => true
    ,p_has_edit => true
    ,p_has_help => true
    ,p_has_about => true
    ,p_referencepath => p_portlet_record.reference_path
    ,p_back_url => p_portlet_record.page_url
    end if;
    Draw the portlet borders.
    The has_border property is set at the page region level.
    wwui_api_portlet.open_portlet(p_portlet_record.has_border);
    Display the content of the portlet in the show mode.
    Use the wwui_api_portlet.portlet_text() API when
    generating the content of the portlet so that the
    output uses the portlet CSS.
    htp.p(wwui_api_portlet.portlet_text(
    p_string => 'Hello World - Mode Show'
    ,p_level => 1
    if (p_portlet_record.has_border) then
    wwui_api_portlet.close_portlet;
    end if;
    elsif (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_SHOW_ABOUT) then
    Display the about page for the portlet.
    htp.p('Hello World - Mode Show About');
    elsif (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_SHOW_EDIT) then
    Display the edit page for the portlet.
    htp.p('Hello World - Mode Show Edit');
    elsif (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_SHOW_HELP) then
    Display the help page for the portlet.
    htp.p('Hello World - Mode Show Help');
    elsif (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_SHOW_EDIT_DEFAULTS) then
    Display the edit defaults page for the portlet.
    htp.p('Hello World - Mode Edit Defaults');
    elsif (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_SHOW_DETAILS) then
    Display the details page for the portlet.
    htp.p('Hello World - Mode Show Details');
    elsif (p_portlet_record.exec_mode = wwpro_api_provider.MODE_PREVIEW) then
    Display the preview page for the portlet.
    htp.p('Hello World - Mode Show Preview');
    end if;
    end show;
    I think you need to add this:
    You can get the values of your html-form with this command:
    v_hidden_1 varchar2(256);
    v_hidden_2 varchar2(256);
    v_hidden_1 := wwpro_api_parameters.get_value('name_of_hidden_1_in_html_form','p');
    v_hidden_2 := wwpro_api_parameters.get_value('name_of_hidden_2_in_html_form','p');
    You can get the actual URL with this command:
    v_url := p_portlet_record.page_url;
    Hope that helps.

    Mark

  • Problem with images in content management portlet

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to use the content management portlet provided with Bea WLP 8.1 SP4, but I've a problem with the images (they're not displayed at all, only a lot of red "X"s). Some how it seems to be a problem with the Taglib render. It tries to get the resourceRootPath to post it in front of the src path in the image tag and it always includes the parameter that are in the URL.
    I followed the instructions in the help of workshop, so I think I've imported every needed files. Moreover, the images are in the right folder tree. The wired thing is, that the My Content Portlet works fine.
    Any help for a newbie???
    Cheers,
    Cord

    Hi Cord,
    I was having that same problem, and I couldn't find anything on this website either. I tried creating a new portal project and following the directions exactly again, but it didn't work there either. It works in the sample portal.
    So I contacted BEA Support, and they were able to provide me with a solution:
    The file url-template-config.xml (in the WEB-INF directory) has to be modified and have the {url:currentPage} parameter removed in order to get the images working for the content management portlet. For now, do this only in the section <!-- URL templates -->. Leave the other places like in WSRP etc as it is.
    I actually took it out of the WSRP places too, by accident, but I don't use WSRP anyway, and everything else seems to be working fine. And the images show up!
    Hope this works for you too,
    Beth

    How does one view a portlet? Registring a provider doesnt work as the portal doesn't pick up a deployed portlet. None of the the tutorials worked for me -- i.e., adding a parameter or an event.
    Please please help!

  • Oracle UCM 10gr3 and webcenter 11g, WCM Portlets

    Hi,
    I have installed Oracle UCM 10gR3, Site Studio 10gR4 and Webcenter 11g. Now my problem is how to get the WYSIWIG (WCM Portlet) created in UCM to be retrieved in webcenter spaces.
    My understanding after reading some articles is the only way i can communicate is through WSRP (CIS and CPS), if that is the case can u suggest what is the difference between them and which one is best one for a Intranet Application. Please also provide the example for the portlet and the steps to install them locally.
    i not asking to give all the answers at a time. Just share bit by bit even if u have some knowledge.
    Thanks,
    Pradeep.
    I am a Newbie!!!

    Hey Pradeep,
    You have lots of options for retrieving content from UCM in WebCenter besides CIS and by extension CPS. The best article on the subject can be found here (if you haven't already read it): http://blogs.oracle.com/fusionecm/2010/04/oracle_ucm_integration_with_we.html
    To more directly answer your questions the difference between CIS and CPS is that CIS is the lower level API that actually does the communication with UCM. It serializes your request across the socket and handles the response data that comes back packaging it up as easy to use objects. CPS leverages CIS as its backend to allow the portlets to communicate with UCM.
    For an intranet application you have lots of options. For document management I would recommend a combination of the Document Library taskflow along with a couple of the CPS portlets (my workflow assignments, etc). To retrieve content to display as part of an intranet "site" I would leverage the Content Presenter taskflow.
    If the content to be retrieved is Site Studio 10gr4 assets I would instead recommend that you roll your own simple content portlets. That is what we ended up doing at Fishbowl and have reused them to great affect implementing several intranet portals for different customers in a very short amount of time. • Webcenter 11g Tutorial: Building portlets and wiring them fails at step 6

    I'm running through the WebCenter Tutorial. I've done everything up to this point. I've created the portlet, checked the view.jsp works, and registered it as a WSRP producer in my tutorial application.
    Step 6 asks me to drag and drop the portlet from the resource palette onto my page. This works, except when I run the page I get portlet unavailable on the generated page.
    The only thing I can think of is that the portlet deployment is being stopped when the tutorial app is being deployed - so I can't run then both at the same time, but that's me guessing from the error messages. Can anyone help?
    In JDev it says the following:

  • Does anyone ever successful deploying the example portlet with wlcs3.2

    I followed the instructions in the document,
    and was able to bring up the portal, however, the nothing showed in the
    tutorial portlet but the title bar.
    There are no error message and I don't know how to find out what's wrong.
    I added debug message in the jsp, but saw none came out.
    I even removed the .class & rename the tutorial.jsp; but no different was
    made
    I'm use wl5.1 sp9
    Another note: I also followed "Enhancing the Example Portal Login", though
    the doc has some errors and was not clean
    where to add the code. I was able to login but the points are not
    incremented.

    hi all i'm a newbie to the forum. i have an iphone 3g which i have had since it came out. i switched 18months ago to the "dark side" and had an htc desire.  the battery life on the htc was rubbish but i had a spare battery and dock so could always have my phone and spare at full charge. i could also kill apps that were draining the battery and on one of my window screens there was a quick place to (using the multiple windows option) to switch off anything i wasn't using.
    my htc got stolen so i had a decision to make as to whether i moved back to iphone which i had become frustrated with as so much was locked down even to a non-techie like me, or go down the samsung galaxy s2 route.  once i'd heard about icloud that kind of clinched it as with android it was always good that you could move everything with you no matter what phone. anyhoo, i get my iphone 4s tomorrow and i'm a bit depressed about the posts regarding the battery life.  Was the reason Apple originally decided we could not access the battery due spoiling the look of the phone or so that competitors can't break into it?  either way looks like we come last in their consideration.
    To add to this i bought a macbook pro in June - my first mac since the 90s - which was another reason why i went with the iphone, but didn't get Lion OS and therefore will now have to buy the upgrade if i want to use the iCloud features.  All a bit pants so far and I haven't even got the phone yet!  sorry a ramble i know but nice to be on the forum anyway!

  • Portlet items in JDev w/OC4J standalone result in 500 (nullPointer) errors.

    I am not sure if this belongs in the JDev or Portal discussion forums, so decided to start here.
    I loaded the Portal PDK extensions into JDev (1012) per instructions on OTN and was able to create an application with a default web template using the portal item in the ViewController object. When I went through the wizzard to create this, I accepted all the defaults and tried to run the generated xxxShowPage.jsp
    When I do, I get a 500 internal server error that seems to be caused by a null pointer... before I paste the error stack in here, I just wanted to be sure to announce that I am a newbie with all this and appologize for obvious mistakes... thanks for the help.. now, the error stack:

  • Portlet calling/invoking another portlet?

    Hi,
    I have portal server 6 2004q2 running and on my page I have 3 columns, thin, thick,thin. Basically 3 portlets/channels. The most right of the portlet contains link and when i click on any link, the middle portlet would refresh and load a new page. Is this possible?
    Is there a sample code for this?
    Q2. If I have a series of complex output, could I preload those portlets and hide them, and when I click on the link (via the right most portlet), the middle portlet minimises/dissapear and the correct portlet will appear in the center?
    Is this possible? Is there a sample code for this?
    Please help - newbie.

    Hi,
    I don't think you can pass a parameter to the URLScraper provider like this. What you could do is, extend the JSPProvider provider
    Eg.
    public class MyJSPProvider extends JSPProvider {
    public URL processEdit(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ProviderException
    String path = request.getParameter("path");
    setClientProperty("path", path);
    return getMaximiseURL(request);
    public URL getMaximizeURL(HttpServletRequest request, String providerName) throws MalformedURLException {
    String container = request.getParameter("lgo.parent.container");
    if (container == null) {
    throw new MalformedURLException("Failed to get the parent container.");
    String url = "action=process&provider=" + container + "&" + container +
    ".channelAction=truemaximize&" + container + ".targetProvider=" + providerName;
    return new URL(this.getProviderContext().getDesktopURL(request, url, false));
    This is just a sample and I haven't compiled or tested this. You need to copy the class files to /etc/opt/SUNWps/desktop/classes directory and add the provider definition to display profile.
    Eg.
    <DisplayProfile priority="0" version="1.0">
    <Properties/>
    <Channels>
    </Channels>
    <Provider class="MyJSPProvider" name="newJSPProvider">
    <Properties>
    <String name="title" value=""/>
    <String name="description" value=""/>
    <String name="contentPage" value="/newJSPProvider/main.jsp"/>
    <String name="editPage" value=""/>
    <String name="processPage" value=""/>
    <String name="width" value="thick"/>
    <Boolean name="isEditable" value="true"/>
    <String name="editType" value="edit_subset"/>
    <Boolean name="showExceptions" value="true"/>
    <String advanced="true" name="refreshTime" value="0"/>
    <Collection name="CustomTheme">
    </Collection>
    </Properties>
    </Provider>
    </DisplayProfile>
    This will now enable you to create new channels using this provider.
    In your jsp file you could something like this.
    <%
    com.sun.portal.providers.jsp.JSPProvider provider = (com.sun.portal.providers.jsp.JSPProvider) request.getAttribute("com.sun.portal.providers.jsp.JSPProvider");
    String path= provider.getClientProperty("path");
    if (pageName == null || pageName.trim().length() == 0)
    path = "defaultpage.html";
    %>
    <jsp:include page="<%=pageName%>" flush="true"/>
    URL to access channel would be something like
    http://test.mydomain.com.my/portal/dt?action=process&lgo.parent.container=<your_parent_container>&provider=MyJSPProvider&path=/interface02/References.htm
    Let me know if you still have problems.
    Regards,
    Damitha

  • Newbie Question. Customizing headers for communities

    Hi
    We are running the demo version of aqaulogic userinteraction. My understanding of the easiest way to customize unique headers and footers for communities is with aqualogic publisher - without publisher is it a matter of developing seperate portlets for each community header? And if so is there an "idiots" or suitable newbie example somewhere?

    You can easy do it without publisher (yes, publisher will be better from support point of view and so on).
    To do it without publisher you can follow these steps:
    1) Create simple remote "Hello my header" http application (just plain html with your boss photo);
    2) Create WS and reference to this application;
    3) Create portlet that will reference to this WS as HEADER!!! or FOOTER!!! (see radio button)
    4) Create community and choose your header portlet as header for this community.

  • Content management portlet not showing images

    Hi all,
    sorry for asking a question maybe already answered, but I couldn't find a solution in the newsgroups.
    I'm trying to use the content management portlet provided with Bea WLP 8.1 SP4, but I've a problem with the images (they're not displayed at all, only a lot of red "X"s).
    I followed the instructions in the help of workshop, so I think I've imported every needed files. Moreover, the images are in the right folder tree.
    Any help for a completely newbie???
    Thx in advance,
    Mirko.

    Hi Mirko,
    I was having that same problem, and I couldn't find anything on this website either.
For now, do this only in the section . Leave the other places like in WSRP etc as it is.
    I actually took it out of the WSRP places too, by accident, but I don't use WSRP anyway, and everything else seems to be working fine. And the images show up!
    Hope this works for you too,
    Beth

  • Jsps from pageflow portlet in navigation (or from portlet to book pages)

    Hi all,
    I'm a Weblogic newbie. I was wondering if anyone could please tell me how to get the name or title of a jsp from a pageflow portlet in navigation?
    I have page1.jsp (title: "Step 1"), page2.jsp ("Step 2") and page3.jsp ("Step 3") in a page flow that goes from page1.jsp to page2.jsp to page3.jsp. This page flow is made into a portlet. This portlet is the ONLY thing on the page in the portal book and the ONLY way to get to page3 is from page2 and to get to page2 is from page1, although you can return to page1 at any point.
    I would like my navigation programming--the single level across the top--to show the name of the jsp that is showing or the title. I've seen how to get the book and the pages of the book in the navigation, but not how to get further than that.
    Has anyone else done this?
    Thanks so much in advance.

    Have you resolved this problem? I'm stuck at the same place.

    Thnx, Rajiv

  • How ot use servlet as the element of portlet?

    I am newbie for weblogic portal. I have tried to created a testing
    portlet with content.jsp, works fine.
    Then I tried to create a servlet, compiled it, got the class file.
    I put that class file name in the content URL. To my supprise, the

    return what it suppose to return.
    Any suggestion are highly welcome.

    Jack,
    The portal framework works based on server-side includes. When you specify the
    contentURL on the EBCC, this means that the content of that JSP will be embeded
    on the main source servlet. I think the result that you get was the normal behavior
    that should happen. The interpreter found a "text" code and simply put it in out.println("the
    binary text").
    Did you get?
    I gess I help you,

  • Remote Debugging Portlets

    Hi,
    I am a newbie to Oracle9iAS Portal and Portlets. I already posted this topic on the Jdev Forum but no reply yet. I hope someone here can help.
    I created some Java Portlets with the JDeveloper and the Portlet Wizard and would like to debug them with the JDeveloper when they are executed in the Portal.
    Any help on how to setup the remote debugging? Are there any documents somewhere?
    Any suggestion or help is much appreciated.

    The correct URL is: Remote Debugging in OC4J.
