Possible to switch ide drives back to hdX or at least boot by UUID?

I have been messing around for a while on this machine trying to get it to boot properly from a compact flash card connected to the ide controller. It boots fine by using the /dev/sda designation in grub but will not work using UUID.
Here is the set up:
It is a headless machine (not now though, until booting is properly set up)
The boot drive is connected to the only ide controller in the machine.
There are two onboard sata ports and a 4 port sata adapter that may or may not have drives connected on boot-up
So here is the problem; when a sata drive is connected to the onboard sata port they take priority in linux's naming of the devices. So with one sata drive connected my boot drive now becomes /dev/sdb under linux. The bios still boots off the ide drive and grub still finds the proper stuff on the ide drive. I tried to solve the issue by using UUIDs but the kernel is unable to locate the uuid upon boot. I tried using mkinitcpio to create an initramfs but either mkinitcpio doesn't prepare one with udev support or there is something else causing it just not to work.
So I am thinking if the kernel was able to be set to give all ide drives /dev/hdx designations like it used to pre-2007 everything would work perfectly. Anyone know if that is even possible anymore in recent kernels?
Or, if anyone knows what is needed to boot from uuid that would work as well.
Here is what I have in grub's menu.lst:
# (1) Arch unRAID
title Arch unRAID
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.32.24-unRAID root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3fba6525-8f8b-4ddd-bb18-4a1f61104aa0 ro acpi_enforce_resources=lax
initrd /kernel-2.6.32.24-unRAID.img
The above is not working. The kernel panics with a statement about not being able to find the root under that uuid.
Thanks again for any help.

Ok I tried this and still got a kernel panic. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by removing pata as well. Isn't that required to detect the ide drives? I guess I could try removing it as well and see what happens.

  • Cant remove old IDE drive from G4 Mac!!!

Guys, if any of you MAC experts can help me out with this, I'd appreciate it.
I'm having a really wierd problem:
I completely rebuilt an AGP Graphics G4 Mac.
I installed a Tempo SATA card, a SATA drive and an external firewire drive (also SATA, but connected via the firewire port).
So......once I had all the drives up and running, I used "SuperDuper" to clone the original, 30 gig IDE drive (the boot drive) to the External Firewire drive. No problem.
In "System Preferences", I set the G4 to boot up from the External Firewire drive. Shut down and restarted.
The G4 seemed to boot fine off the External Firewire drive. To check, I pulled up "about this Mac" and it said "startup drive...external" Also, the external drive now appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
BUT!! When I opened the case and removed the old IDE drive, and restarted, the G4 will not boot!!!
It seems to need the old IDE drive connected even tho its booting off the External Firewire drive!!!
Does anyone have ANY idea whats going on here? I really need to remove the IDE drive because its old and its gonna crap out at some point. I have to be able to boot with it out of the machine.
Do you think its still ooting off the old IDE drive even tho the system is telling me its booting off the external drive?
    help!
    thanks,
    Retro

There may be a need to use a keyboard command for the computer to boot off an external
FireWire enclosed hard disk drive when there is an unsuitable or no internal IDE PATA drive
in the computer's case; one that forces the computer to search for a suitable boot volume
on startup. This issue may force you into further troubleshooting the computer hardware.
Perhaps the clone used in the external has some permissions issues and relies on the
presence of the original drive for validation? Some clones need to have those kinds of
permissions turned off or set to be off when the clone is made.
With a new replacement hard disk drive in the original internal drive location, a clone of
the external could be made into that new drive; and be sure the conditions of the clone
process are correct before you wipe any original disk content, so you can go back for
another clone should some error in the process require you to reference the first, again.
There is an ATA controller card in computers which may have something to do with how
multi-disk drive computers see and use additional internal items on the same bus, but
this should not affect the FireWire external's bootability, if it was natively capable of it.
On the face of it, this sounds like an odd issue. Replacing the aging old drive with one
capable of running the computer, from its original location, is probably a first step.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Powerbook 5300c & booting from CF cards (PCMCIA & as IDE drive)

    Hi all,
I'm trying to "upgrade" my vintage PB 5300c and replace the internal noisy slow HD to using CF cards via the IDE-CF card adaptors.
in theory, this should be pretty easy.. format the CF card as HFS, install OS (trying 8.1), connect everything and reboot.
however, I'm having severe difficulties. First, I couldn't get the 5300c to boot off the CF card via the PC card slot at all (ejects the CF card not finding any OS on it). This, I managed to figure out that using HFS+ was a bad idea. So I reformatted the CF card to HFS (standard), and then re-installed 8.1. At least this time it would recognize a system folder and try to boot.. but soon after the MacOS splash screen it crashes stating "bus error". I managed to get it to reboot once while holding the shift key, but only that once.
I've tried installing the CF card to the IDE drive chain, and managed to get it boot in OS8.6, but it's kinda slow.. so I would really like to boot into 8.1...
But either way, I need to make sure I can boot this thing via pc slot before I put it back into the IDE drive bay. so under HFS, I have tried installing a fresh copy of OS8.6, 7.6, 8.1 to no avail. it still boots fine via the internal hard drive, or using SCSI external. I haven't tried putting the CF card back onto IDE bay yet.
What is wrong? is there something wrong with the motherboard/logic board that is preventing it from booting from CF? I'm starting to think there is something more sinister than just a plain-vanilla "bad OS installation".
All installation is done on the 5300c, either through an install disk image on the CF, or the internal HD, or "drag-drop" a known working OS onto the CF.
I have at my disposal, my trusty Al-PB G4 running Leopard (kinda useless other than downloading stuff from the net and loading on to CF to get it on the PBs), PB G3 Lombarde (somehwat useful, although it won't work under 8.1, so trying the installation on that machine is useless). I also do have another 5300c with a bad power connector (the solder ripped off) so i do have some spare parts to swap if needed...
any ideas what to do? I guess I can try to install OS7.5 (painful...) instead of 7.6 and see if that works... I'm totally baffled, and I'm starting to get a bit discouraged here...

    Hmm some thoughts.
Try your old battery, the PRAM batteries in PowerBooks are rechargeable but in most cases they seem to require a battery in the slot. Not sure if it's to do with contacts needed to complete a circuit or they piggyback some of the power off the battery but on the Pismo's I've worked on the PRAM doesn't seem to want to take a charge or charges a lot slower without a battery.
I tried going back to OS 8.0 on the 5300 since I still have it loaded on a different Kingston 512MB CF card and on each restart it came up with the bus error so my best guess is that you need to try 8.5. I installed this from the retail version (green CD).
I have the 8.6 upgrade somewhere but have a feeling that might not work.
Also have 9 floating around so may try that on a bigger card when I have some spare time...
Just to recap, I'm using some pretty old Kingston 512MB CF cards. Back before we had all the different speed ratings so these are probably the slowest ones out there. I suppose the bus could be funky enough that the newer faster cards can have an issue so I'll try a faster card I have later.
Using a Kyrocera PCMCIA CF card adaptor in the top PCMCIA slot on the 5300cs and setting it to boot from the CF card in the startup disk control panel.
I'm installing the OS from an Apple 2X CD rom attached via the special PowerBook SCSI cable to the 5300 and running the install from this. I'm formatting the CF cards with the version of disk tools on the CD I'm loading the OS from.
Then doing a normal system installation on a clean CF card.
I pulled out another 5300cs and booted it from the OS 8.5 CF card no problems booting. Tried the OS 8 CF card and bus errors out every time.

I went into my pages app the other day and found that all of my documents were GONE. I have no idea why or how, but they are gone from all of my devices. Is it possible to get them all back? Please someone help me!!

Without a backup source I don't see how you'll be able to restore them.  You might just give it some time to see if they reappear due to some server glitch at Apple's end.  If you think there may be an issue with Time Machine you can try posting a question on that over in the appropriate OS X forum.

  • IDE drives not being detected

Yesturday I built a computer from all brand new parts listed in my sig. However, the motherboard can't seem to detect any IDE drives. It is not crashing, it just says 'None' on the 4 IDE devices. I even tried connecting just the one DVD drive as the primary master on IDE 1 (blue part of IDE cable going into MB and the end going into the drive, middle connecter left open) and it still couldn't detect the drive. I've made certain the IDE cable is the correct way round (it doesn't go in any other way), and i've used a different IDE cable that I know works, but still the MB cannot detect the drive. The drive's jumper is set to Master (i have also tried cable select). JBAT1 on the MB is set to "keep data".
I have seen some odd behaviour that may shed some light. When I do not connect the IDE cable to the drive (so it only has the power in it), the lights come on and the DVD drive tray can open. But when I connect the IDE cable to it, the lights do not come on, and you cannot open the tray, as if there was no power to it. I asked my cousin and he said it sounds like the device is being earthed. Is that possible with an IDE cable?
The second thing I noticed was everytime I started the computer with a cold boot (ie. power down then power on as opposed to reset), it said "CMOS checksum failed - Defaults loaded". I thought this could have been a battery problem so I replaced the battery with a new one of the same model, but it is still resetting the defaults.
Apart from failing to detect the IDE drives and CMOS checksum errors the MB seems to be alright. It correctly identifies the CPU and the amout of memory. The back plate diagnostic connecter that came with the MB says everything is OK.
    Any ideas?

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. Its been a busy week and I hadn't got a chance to reply myself.
I've been using the computer for a few days now. Sometimes the drives fail to detect and BIOS defaults get loaded again, but I just loosen some of the screws that hold the motherboard to the case and it starts working again. I am very concerned about this broken wire. It defintely looks like a dodgy board and I am not happy with its unreliability. Check out the pics:
Board (its on the top right)
    Close up
I think Ebuyer are gonna be a pain to get this returned to them. I have a feeling they are just going to throw me to MSI support to get it repaired or replaced.
If anyone knows anything about this wire please let me know . Thanks!

    For 32-bit Windows:
    "C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Utilities\PWMUIAux.exe" /HighPerformanceGpu /ShowDialog
    "C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Utilities\PWMUIAux.exe" /EnergySavingGpu /ShowDialog

You still need Power Manager installed, as well as the switchable graphics driver package provided by Lenovo (not AMD/ATI or Intel).

  • Recurring kernal panics solved by cloning startup drive back to internal.

My MacBook Pro is about 14 months old. This scenario started about 8 months ago About every 4 - 6 weeks I start getting kernel panics with increasing frequency. Resetting PRam doesn't seem to help. Booting off an external firewire drive doesn't stop the kernal panics and I even get kernel panics starting off the install disk. I've done a clone of my internal drive to an external sata drive connected to my dual2.5gig G5 connecting the macbookpro to the G5 using target mode (I put the macbookpro in target mode). If I reformat the internal drive using the install disk and clone the startup drive back from the sata drive connected to my g5 (again starting the macbookpro in target mode) everything returns to normal for about a month and then the same thing starts happening again.
Any ideas what I could do to avoid this recurring problem.

    Hi
If it were me I'd suspect a hard disk problem as well. They can and do fail, and whilst I guess it can happen at any time, they do seem to fail either very early on (in the first few months) or very late on (after several years). When the problem occurs, if the drive doesn't show up in the disk utility, it would seem to be something fairly fundamental that a reformat probably wouldn't solve anyway. I guess you could just check the power and ribbon cables are seated securely, but failing that, trying another hard disk would be one option. That would prove whether the problem lies with the drive or the computer. Most external drives are just normal internal ATA drives mounted in an external FireWire or USB enclosure. It may be possible to remove your external drive from the enclosure and install it internally just to see whether that fixes the problem.

  • KM4M-V + SATA Drive, Hangs at Boot, Tried IDE Drive and During Setup, Powers Off

I bought 2 KM4M-V boards to upgrade my ailing 1880+ systems. Then realized I needed DDR as well so went back for that and also decided to update CPU's to Sempron 2600+. Also picked up Seagate 80Gb SATA and a 350 watt PSU (Alaska ATX 350 P4) which was recommened for this board by the dealer.
I am having so much trouble I am about to throw in the towel. Since I am 'upgrading' everything in the system except the CDRom drive I should have just started all over with 64-bit systems but now I am kind of stuck since it is over 30 days ago I got the MB's.
    Problem 1:
Using only the single SATA drive I never could get past the DMI Pool data line in Setup, it would just hang there. I read all about how to deal with SATA drives with this or similar boards here. SATA is enabled in BIOS but I can never get to the F6 load drivers step to try that. If I remove the SATA cable Setup will procede so it is something with the Seagate possibly? No jumpers needed and no preparation done to the drive. BIOS does not see the drive but the setup RAID utility does see it but says I cannot set up single drive as RAID of course, but it does report proper data about the drive. Never can get past Bios POST with SATA drive hooked up (channel 0 or 1)
Finally gave up on that and ran into Problem 2:
Put an older IDE drive in as only HD and XP Windows setup gets cranking along coping files then the system just dies. Like some pulled the plug suddenly. Happen every time. I checked for heat problems. Even ran through memory tests (SIMMTESTER), tried swapping cables, plugs and wall circuits. It dies every time no matter what.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

DMI pool data? When changing mobo but keeping hard disk one should do a repair install of Windows and install the mobo drivers for the new mobo.
I originally wanted to keep the Windows install but decided to remove original C drive and save for eventual D drive use. A repair install warns you that your 'My Documents' folder 'may' be deleted and I didn't want to risk it as I have years and years of photos I didn't want to risk losing.

  • IDE Drive too old to be compatible with MDD (FW800)?

I'm trying to get some data off an old IDE drive (1.2 Gig Connor that is in my Performa 6300CD). The drive is formatted as an HFS + drive.
I am connecting the drive to my FW800 via an IDE to USB adapter that I have used successfully many times with other IDE drives to this computer.
The drive mounts, and one time seemed OK long enough that I could view its' contents in finder. After selecting 1 file, and trying to select another for copying Finder froze.
I couldn't get Finder to relaunch, and couldn't get the machine to shutdown, resorting to holding the power switch in long enough for it to power down.
FW800 booted back up fine, subject drive mounted again fine. Double-clicked on its' desktop icon and Finder froze again. Had to resort to the power switch again. I'm not looking to test my luck further, trying to understand what might be happening.
Could the disk or the interface just be too slow for this machine? Is a 1995 vintage IDE drive compatible with modern ATA-100 / ATA-133 adapters? What information I've been able to find suggests that it should be. From specs I was able to find it is a 3600 RPM drive capable of up to 16.7 MB/sec transfer speeds. (Old Drive Specs)
Worst case I'll just put it back in the 6300 and copy what I want via Appleshare, it will just be a lot slower. That old computer booted fine last time I had it set up.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Power Mac G4 (FW800)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dual 1.25 Ghz

I also have a G3 B&W (350 MHz, 10.3.9) available to try this drive in. Initially it was preventing the B&W from booting at all when installed internally (either IDE connector of the ribbon cable).
I looked again at the Spec page, and this drive has something called a Single Drive jumper setting as well as the more common Master or Slave settings. The drive was set to Single Drive. I changed the jumper to a Slave Drive setting.
After that the B&W booted up, I was able to share it, and successfully copy the contents off the drive.
At this point I'm pretty sure it was the jumper settings that were giving me problems. I'm going to do a quick test with the IDE to USB adapter with this current jumper setting to see if it allows access via the USB adapter.
Thanks for your input, I have accomplished what I set out to do.

  • [Solved]IDE Drive mounting problem.

Hey all, I've got an annoying problem with one of my IDE drives.
Basically I just can't get it to mount, during boot up I get a few errors:
    end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 0
    ata2: EH complete
    unable to read partition table
Corrupt partition table, simple enough? I wish. I can mount the drive without error in both my Windows and Ubuntu 7.10 install. Which leads me to think it dislikes using the PATA driver or whatever the change was in later kernels.
The really puzzling part is that I can wipe the drive and create a new partition with parted, then mount it manually and copy data to it. But as soon as I reboot I am back the start, getting I/O errors and can't mount.
A couple of guys on IRC were saying to rmmod the pata drivers and modprobe the ide ones, but I have no experience with either of those functions. And from what I can see there is like 15 different IDE drives I could choose from, so have no idea what I should be doing.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Is it possible to switch off auto dates in a comments box?

    Hello,
I am making annotations to a document in pages 09 using the comments facility.  However each time after saving when I return the date has automatically appeared in the comments box.  This is becoming slightly annoying as I have a larger list of dates than the comments I'm making!
Is it possible to switch this feature off?
Thankyou in advance for any help.

    Hi Jerrold,
That works fine until I save and then when I reopen the document the comment box has the date and time back at the top.  If I save and reopen again the following day there will be two dates and times in the box!
I really just need to get rid of them totally.

  • File copy with 2 IDE Drive and Soundblaster problem

    Hi,
When i try to copy large files my system will usually lock (windows totally freezes, the only solution is to do a hard reset). I cut the problem down to beeing an issue with my sound blaster live platinum 5.1.
Everything is working fine when I remove the soundblaster.

I have upgraded all the possible drivers : VIA4in1 (v4.51), latest BIOS upgrade (E6590v2.0), latest creative drivers....
I tried a lot of different settings in the BIOS (PCI latency, PCI bus mastering etc...)
    This is really anoying...
    Please help !!!

    change pci latency to 96.
change "system performance setting" within DRAM settings to "FAST"
    you could also;
try changing "System Bios Cachable" to "Enabled"
and change "C000 Shadow" to "Cacheable"
im using all those above settings, and thats with ALOT of drives attached as well, and ive been copying 20+GB files all over the place including over network drives.
