Potential fix to slowness in IE7 / Vista?

Hello.
Someone brought this to my attention. A page created with iWeb (not sure of version) was taking forever to load in IE7 on Vista. The server seemed to come back, but an excessive amount of javascript running onLoad was causing IE to hang.
I noticed a topic posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1084667 ... and I was going to post my findings there, but for some reason, the topic is both unanswered and archived... seemingly still valid, 3 years later.
Anyway, at around line 332-343 of iWebSite.js (again, not sure of the version it was created with -- the line numbers might vary for different versions?) a function, fixAllIEPNGs, exists that takes each image with a PNG extension and applies the AlphaImageLoader css filter to get transparency working.
AlphaImageLoader is only required for earlier versions of IE (between 5.5 - 6.0 if I recall correctly) and is PAINFULLY slow... Normally it takes a couple thousand GIF/JPG on a page before you notice any lag, but with the alpha image loader, it takes only a half dozen or so before things slow to a crawl.
Thing is, the function runs for all versions of IE, where it really only needs to be applied to versions < 7. So... the suggested, completely untested, fix I provided to my friend (I should have prefaced saying I don't actually own a Mac, nor have I ever used iWeb) was to make a revisions to iWebSite.js, line 333:
replace: {detectBrowser();if(windowsInternetExplorer)
with : {if( shouldApplyCSSBackgroundPNGFix() )
That function is used in a different section and checks for IE<7. Applying this fix should speed things up in newer versions of IE and for those fools still using archaic versions of IE, they'll still get transparency on the PNG files.
Um... enjoy!

Nice post, thanks!

  • Potential fix for slow/unreliable network on Macbook Air running Mavericks

    Hi all,
I work in IT support at University of Manchester, UK and have found a fix for for network issues we were experiencing with Macbook Air laptops running Mavericks. These Airs were having issues connecting to our WiFi and experiencing slow downloads, even when switched over to UBS LAN adaptors.
Anyhow, after trawling these forums without success I stumbled upon this solution myself so thought I'd share:
Basically, if you are experiencing speed/connection issues go into the 'Advanced' network settings and change the IPv6 setting from 'Automatic' to 'Link Local' and then reboot. Hopefully, after doing this you should find your speed levels return to expected levels!
    Hope it works for you.
    Cheers.

  • Jp2ssv.dll slows down new tabs with IE7/Vista

    java version "1.6.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
IE7/Vista Home Basic (SP1, ITA, x86) all fully updated.
If the ActiveX plugin for IE7 named 'Java (tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper' (jp2ssv.dll) is enabled, IE7 takes 3-4 seconds to open every new tab. A very boring delay.
If I disable that ActiveX control only, everything works fine at the expected speed, both Java web-based pages and IE7.
What's this ActiveX for? And why it causes long 3-4 secs delay when enabled?

  • Zooming animation is extremely slow in IE7 and IE8

    Hi,
    version: OracleAS MapViewer Version: Ver1033p5_B080908
zooming effect is extremely slow in IE7 and IE8 (FF, Safari, Chrome do it fast!)
    thanks,
    Branislav

I believe you can blame IE's incredibly slow JavaScript engine for this. That's my experience. There's not much the Mapviewer developers can do about that really.
I had hoped, that IE8 had improved on that, but there hasn't really been any visible differences.

    4. On the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window click the "Add" button.
    5. On the Select Users or Groups window click the "Advanced" button.
    6. A new Select Users or Groups window will open and then click the "Find Now" button.
    7. The search results are sorted alphabetically; locate the username you logon to Windows with and then double-click.
    8. Under the "Enter the objects names to select..." you should see something like this YOURCOMPUTERNAME\Yourusername
    9. Now click the OK button.

    16. Locate the Help menu item and click Repair Acrobat Installation
    17. Restart if requested to do so.
This fix worked on Windows Vista Business Edition (32-Bit).

I have windows XP media center. I uninstalled Acrobat 8 to download Acr 9 pro extended. No adobe printer was installed .
Tried the steps given here by Steve Lionel. I was able to add the "Adobe PDF Converter" as printer. Although after the 7th step in Steve's fix, the wizard asked me to search for some files (from XP CDrom) which I was able to locate in the Windows folder-drivers folder and the system32-spool folder.
I went to acrobat, opened a pdf file and tried to print with this printer and saved it on the desktop. A file appears, but adobe cannot open it however it activates adobe illustrator and opens in that program.
Lots of time has gone. No solution yet.
    Appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks
    Update!!!
I tried printing on this printer from a webpage and it converted the webpage like charm.
I am more than happy even if I get to use this printer to convert webpages to pdf as now I don't have to install those shady pdf converters and printer drivers.
This is good as the fix given here works even for XP.
    Thanks for this wonderful solution.

  • Fix For Slow Down Worked!

From a previous fix - this worked to eliminate what was a 5 to 10 minute startup and shut down problem for our iMAC using OS X 10.5.8. with the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor - from a thread from a while back (and sorry, I am not going through all the folks that contributed, but the dogs are ready to go outside):
    (full excerpt below my procedures)
    Procedures -
x - first close all unnecessary applications
    1 - go to applications
2 - load the Terminal App
    3 - type: sudo chown root:admin /
4 - then press the return key
5 - type in your password when asked (the screen will not show that you are typing)and the press the return key
    6 - type: sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
7 - then press the return key
    8 - type: sudo kextcache -system-caches
9 - then press the return key
10 - close the Terminal app
I then shut down my computer, started it up, let it fully boot, shut it down a second time, then when I restarted everything was back to normal!!!
Here is the actual excerpt I used to fix the slowness - don't ask me how it works, cuz I am a novice:
    From mad84max and user gbvin:
    Go to the Terminal App
"It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:
    terminal commands
    sudo chown root:admin /
    sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
    sudo kextcache -system-caches
You'll have to enter your password after the first command."
Hope this will help you since it was really frustrating for me.

I had slowness on my 3G after upgrading to iOS 4, but I found a simple fix here:
    http://www.davekawalec.com/2010/07/3-steps-to-fix-iphone-3g-slowness-after-ios4- upgrade/
It's basically the same steps you recommend, but then after a reboot, you can turn all of the search functions back on. I haven't had a performance problem since I did this.

  • Potential fix for WGM generating negative User IDs

I saw a posting back from August 2007 from "Summer is Gone", where he/she asked about Workgroup Manager generating negative User IDs (UIDs). No one responded back then and the thread is now closed, so I thought I'd contribute my experience with it today.
I had this problem on a 10.4.11 server that serves only as an OD Master. I had archived the OD database, set to Standalone, rebooted, and then restored the archive as a potential fix for some little glitches that we'd been having after 4 years of running the server.
After the archive was restored, WGM was creating negative UIDs during "Add User". I'm not certain that was the trigger, but it's the likely one.
The fix was to simply trash ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.workgroupmanager.plist and relaunch WGM. After that, WGM once again started generating positive UIDs.

In case no one got back to you, when you use WGM to import set the "First User ID" to a positive number. WGM>Server>Import>First User Import ID
Then all users will get a positive ID.

  • My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade

I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.

    Hi-
Do you have a Tiger volume to test your machine with?
Do you still have video in Tiger?
If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step
So now I am wondering if it is the PCI slot that suddenly stopped working after the OS upgrade. Does anyone know if this is a documented issue and if there is a fix for it?
There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

  • Computer running real slow. Tried Vista disk cleaning but attempts to fix error not working. How can I speed up PC?

My computer is running really really slow. I did a Microsoft help search and I see performance recommendations to do a disk cleanup and disk defrag. Neither works on my computer.
Maybe I'm not on the right track. I went to support.microsoft.com and followed several instructions to go to cmd and type in some words.
This is the message I get when I try to run disk clean:

After I select ok, I get this message:

I followed the instruction at support.microsoft.com  form for why do I receive an advance INF error. That did not work
Mon 4/8/14 at 1:46 pm I did this: vista-performance inf install failure  (it didn't take me anywhere) so I tried this:

  • Fix For Slow Safari On Windows

A number of people reported that Safari was running very slow for them on Windows. I was someone who was also seeing the same behavior. Web pages that would open up in 2 seconds under IE7 could take literally minutes to fully draw in Safari.
Someone mentioned a proxy issue in one of the other threads, and I got to thinking about that...I made a tiny change, and the problem is gone! Safari is now full steam ahead for me, compared to the snail is was before.
Here is how I fixed the issue.
1 - Click Start and open the Control Panel.
2 - Open the "Internet Options" Control Panel.
3 - Click the "Connections" tab at the top.
4 - Click the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom.
5 - Uncheck the "Automatically Detect Settings" Box.
6 - Click OK to exit the "LAN Settings" window.
7 - Click OK to exit the "Internet Options" window.
Your mileage may vary, but this really did work for me. Nothing else I had tried (clearing the cache, re-installing, etc.) made a difference...but this did. Not sure why it's not affecting everyone, but this doesn't seem to have any negative side effects. IE7 is still working fine for me with the "Automatically Detect" box unchecked.
    Enjoy!

  • Ajax slow on IE7

Hi, I got three cfselects on one page...
    <cfselect name="company"
    style="width:200px;"></cfselect>
    <cfselect name="project" style="width:200px;"
    bind="cfc:components.test.getProjects({company})"
    bindOnLoad="no"></cfselect>
    <cfselect name="activity" style="width:200px;"
    bind="cfc:components.test.getActivities({project},{company})"
    bindOnLoad="no"></cfselect>
    and one <cfgrid> has
    bind="cfc:components.test.getData({cfgridpage},{cfgridpagesize},{cfgridsortcolumn},{cfgri dsortdirection},
    document.insertForm.date[0].value)".
Everything works very fast in Firefox but is really slow
(unuseable) in IE7. Seems like it's a lag before IE7 posts the
    ajax-message to the server.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
I ran acros similar problems using the FCK-Editor
    (integration with <cftextarea richText="true" ... > and the
old fashioned way using the cfc) and have made some tests end of
    last week.
First of all: What kind of OS you're running? I'll bet it's
vista (because my problemes occured just with that system).
What I figured out was that the time, IE needs to render the
page respectively to perform all the DOM manipulations, risies
exponentially with the number of nested layout tags, especially
    <cflayout ... > / <cflayoutarea ... >. It seems to me
as if the JScript engine (which isn't realy performant anyway),
reaches it's limits in this case...
With the ressources monitor of vista it's no problem to
protocol the CPU-load-peaks (up to 90%) while processing the
    FCK-Editor scripts.
    Does anyone made similar experiances?

  • Fix for Slow Transfers on Vision

Hello all. I thought I'd just like to give a heads up on a fix I found for the Creative Zen Vision:M and its slow transfer problems. All you have to do is download Windows Media Player . This seems to fix any sort of firmware issue between the player and the computer.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx
Not only will this fix the transfer rate for indiviual songs, but also large quantities. And on top of that, this version of Windows Media Player is outstandingly awesome.

  • Itunes 8 extremely slow and feezes Vista

    Oh my god,
This is getting worse. If you tought that Itunes 7 and Vista weren't ment for eachother, Itunes 8 and Vista just hate eachother. Itunes 8 is just extremely slow on my fresh installed Vista. It keeps freezing up and sometimes my system won't respond to a thing I am doing thanks to the wonderfull crappy software from Apple...
If this is really all you guys can write then I guess I will have to look for a better software to synch my ipod.

I've definitely noticed that switching between library sections (music, movies, etc.) is much slower in iTunes 8 than it was with ver. 7. So far, it's a teeth gritting annoyance at worst. It improved somewhat when I set all areas to List View, but only somewhat. The program also takes longer to load than version 7 did (sort of unbelievable in itself!), and there WAS one heart stopper of a moment where I thought it had locked up and taken my HP laptop with it, but it came back after 15-20 seconds on its own. I don't have a novice-level PC by any means; it's one of the newest and nicest of the direct-to-retail models, with a Core 2 Duo (P8400), discrete Nvidia 9600M GT w/512MB RAM, and 4GB of system RAM, running Vista HP 64 bit. (Yep, I installed the 64-bit iTunes.) I did notice one other poster mentioned having an HP laptop. Doesn't seem like hardware limitations should be a factor, at least in my case; I hope, whatever the issue turns out to be, that it isn't some total incompatibility with something HP loads on its machines. I'm sure Apple will come up with a bug fix at some point, but since the iPhone 3G became part of my life, it sure seems like a large chunk of that life is spent waiting for Apple to fix bugs and putting up with subpar performance in the meantime. I'm pretty new to things Apple, and I can say quite honestly that all the problems I've had with various iPods, the iPhone 3G, and here and there with iTunes were the reason I chose my current laptop over a MBP. I couldn't stand the idea of spending all that money and getting a lemon. Apple isn't the huge performer I'd always heard it was, not in my experience!

  • Who can help me fix email slowness before I bail out and go to gmail?

Deleting emails takes at least 20 seconds. Sending is also slow. It's not Comcast -- my speed is good.
I followed instructions to open Thunderbird in Safe Mode but it didn't go into Safe Mode.
And even if it had, I wouldn't know what add-ons to eliminate or have the nerve to do it.
I have no idea how to solve this problem. I NEED A SUPPORT PERSON or so help me I'm gone from Mozilla.
And while you're at it, how do I get rid of AVG Secure Search?
    Please and thank you.

I would guess that all your slowness problems are from your anti virus, unfortunately if you are not technically skilled enough to click on a menu item to restart Thunderbird in safe mode, I seriously doubt you will be able to start your operating system in safe mode to diagnose the issue.
To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu (alt+H), click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
