Power management & media keys Compiz standalone

Hello everyone
Just made the full time switch to Arch a week or so ago, have to say it's the best Linux experience I've had! Loving it!
So I've got it set up using Compiz as a standalone WM with tint2 for navigation. I was curious if anyone could suggest a decent power manager?
I mainly need this to actually be able to tell my system to shutdown/reboot, right now I've just been using the shell to compensate. I have the gnome-settings-daemon running for gtk management if that opens up more options for me It'd also be handy perhaps having the ability to manage my session, I've been using pkill and it's getting a bit tedious...
Also, I use the Apple aluminium keyboard with my system which has playback keys (back, play/pause,forward) and volume keys. Right now the only means I have of managing my system's audio output is to use alsamixer, which is somewhat cumbersome. As the gnome-settings-daemon is running, I get the HUD to notify me of the volume change, so I just need some way of managing my volume conveniently. I thought I might be able to do this with the 'commands' module in compiz, but couldn't find any command to suit my needs.
Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated!
*!EDIT!* : Okay I figured out the media keys myself. Whilst I looked for a suitable media player for my music, I stumbled upon sonata, once installed one of it's optional installs was 'dbus-python', which I already had on my system, it's comment stated something along the lines of 'function for media keys', so I added it 'dbus-python' to my xinitrc and it worked!
Chuffed with this, but, I'd still appreciate some advice on a power/session manager
*!EDIT 2!* : Right, my edit above did work for the volume keys, however I'm still unable to use the playback keys on the keyboard

Thanks for the reply patrickthebold, I haven't tried that. soon as I'm home from work I'll give it a shot, though I'm not sure what commands I could bind to simulate track back, play/pause, track forward. Hopefully nothing a bit of Google can't solve

  • X220 tablet power manager

Just did a clean install on a mSata drive in my X220t. Everything works fine after installing the drivers (sceen rotation etc). But I cant get the powermanager to work. I installed the latest driver (windows 8 beta). I install the installer, and the installer installs the PM, but after a reboot the program just isn't there. I can't find or open it.
Anyone got a suggestion of what i'm doing wrong?
    all drivers installed: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT072084

I have an X220.  Installed Power Manager, Hot Key, Access Connections with no problem. I had to click on the "Troubleshoot Compatibility" to install Access - then click on an option where I could say "this program worked on Windows 7" and then "next" and it installed with no problem.  The "compatibility" option tried to make the program compatible with XP SP3 but I clicked I think the other option on that screen and was able to basically force it to try and run as W7 compatible.

  • Gnome-power-manager with networkmanager_sleep option

I have a wireless device using the ipw2200 module. I have always found it extremely annoying that gnome-power-manager asks NetworkManager to sleep before suspending, since, first of all, the ipw2200 module doesn't need to be unloaded and, secondly, because I always have to wait the extra few seconds it takes for NM to send the dhcp request after resuming. I made a patch that adds an option to turn the NM-sleep call on or off via a gconf entry (networkmanager_sleep). The patch has been accepted upstream and included in CVS. However, I've made a patch that applies cleanly to gnome-power-manager 2.16.1 as well. Here it is:

It would be great if this could be added to the official package, but I'm not expecting it

Have a look in gconf-editor to see if there's a setting for that? (I can't check now, I'm using XFCE.) Also, check that you didn't keep the default "put computer to sleep when the lid is closed", but I suppose you've done it already...

  • How do I get gnome-power-manager working with standalone Openbox?

I'm brand new to Arch, so sorry if this is a dumb question that's already been answered. I'm installing on a Thinkpad T410, and I want a battery icon in my system tray. I've installed Openbox as a standalone window manager, and I'm using tint2 for a panel and system tray. I need something in my system tray to show my battery status.
I've looked around, and I don't really see any alternative to gnome-power-manager (I looked at trayfreq and batterymon), so I'm attempting to use that. I've installed it, but if I try to run it from a terminal I get this:
GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power' is not installed
    aborting...
    Aborted
After I get that, it quits and I really don't know what's going on there. Searching for "settings schema not installed" gets me nothing useful, so does anyone have an idea as to how to solve this problem?

n1md4 wrote:This solution worked for me too.  I run a vanilla openbox install.  Although I now have the battery icon in the panel, when selecting preferences, nothing loads.  Any ideas?
From this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=118420 the user said it solved it installing gnome-control-center.

  • Problems with SpeedStep and Windows Power Management: SYSTEM FREEZES!

I am running an E6600 on my MSI 975X PUE-Mainboard @ 2,4 GHz.  I am experiencing a strange problem that seems to be related to EIST and/or Windows Power Management:
As soon as I set Windows Power Management to "Presentation" or any other mode that lets Windows throttle the CPU frequency the system freezes randomly: no bluescreens, no error messages...the only option is to hit the restart button...
However, if the Windows Power Management Option is set to "Desktop" the system runs just fine!
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
    Any suggestions?

    @Vaniireg
Thanks for your reply, but I cannot agree.  Windows Power Management is needed in order to use Speedstep:
    http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/203838.htm
    Intel clearly states that:
"An OS that supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology is required. Current supporting OSs include:, Microsoft Windows* XP SP2 includes native support for Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology."
    and further:
"Finally Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology must be turned on in the OS. Currently, for Windows* XP SP2 operating systems Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology by default is off. To turn it on do the following: Under Control Panel – open Power Options Under the Power Schemes pull down menu To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology ON select, “Minimal Power Management,” power scheme.  To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology OFF select, “Always On,” power scheme."
If I select the "Minimal Power Management" power scheme, the CPU frequency will drop to about 1,6 GHz and the Voltage (CPU-Z) to 1,136-1,144 V.  Whenever I do that the system will eventuelly freeze.  Skipping through a video file in Media Player Classic is sometimes enough to cause the system to hang.
If I select the "Always On" power scheme the system will run stable, no freezes will occur, but the CPU will ALWAYS run @2,4 GHz and the voltage WILL NOT be reduced to 1.14 V.
    @batcook09:
Unfortunately, a clean re-install of Windows XP Pro did not take care of my problem.  I've already tried that.  The system is not overclocked and is running with default settings.  Speedstep is enabled.
It is interesting to notice, that Dual Core Center always causes my system to freeze, even though Windows Power Management Options are set to "Always On".  I read a lot of bad things about this program and that is one more reason for me to avoid using it.
Well, I have forwarded my problem to Intel and MSI Support, maybe they will come up with any solution.
Until then, further suggestions are very welcome...

  • How do I TURN OFF power management???

My computer still keeps going to sleep and the only way to wake it up is to hit the reset button.  I tried enabling the keyboard-wake-up to wake it up, but then it started rebooting itself spontaneously every 15 minutes -- without any warning from Windows.  It doesn't matter whether I select S1/POS or S3/STR mode -- it does the same thing every time.  I don't want S1 or S3 power management.  I want to TURN OFF POWER MANAGEMENT COMPLETELY!  I only want Windows to turn off the monitor.  The BIOS should do nothing!

This is strange - my understanding is you would usually use the Power button to wake the suspended PC...
Could what you are experiencing be more of a shutdown or instability?
Is it due to BIOS setting or Windows? Here are some possibilities
    1. What is your selected Power Scheme? Are your options for Turn off hard disks, System standby & System hibernates set to Never?
    2. These BIOS settings work fine for me ...
    ACPI Standby State : Auto
    Power Management/APM : Enabled
    Suspend Time Out : Disabled
    Set Monitor Events
    FDC/LPT/COM Ports : Monitor
    Primary Master IDE : Monitor
    Primary Slave IDE : Ignore
    Secondary Master IDE : Ignore
    Secondary Slave IDE : Ignore
    Set WakeUp Events
    Resume on PME : Disabled
Resume on RTC Alarm : Disabled
    Keyboard PowerOn Function : Disabled
    Mouse PowerOn Function : Disabled
    3. Does your keyboard have any of those quick buttons for Power / Sleep / Wake ? Could any of them be stuck? (Mine has these in a most inconvenient place - between Delete/End/PgDn and arrow keys, so I sometimes accidentally pressed them)

  • Power Management Driver wont install in Windows 7

Hi All, I've been trying to get my blue Fn keys to work on my recently purchased SL500.  Volume and screen brightness keys work (but no on-screen display), however Fn+F3 & F5 do nothing, as does the blue ThinkVantage button.  Installed drivers via System Update, however every time I get the message "Package did not install - ThinkPad Power Management Driver for SL Series".  Power Manager is installed and running but the driver is not listed under Program & Features.   I'm guessing the lack of this driver is the problem.  Anyone else seen this or have a fix ?  Thanks.

Please visit: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds014985 but don't download the most current version (3.89.0100) at the top. If you look at the readme, you'll see that the SL500 is not included in the supported systems list.
Instead, scroll downwards to the version table and have a look at the readme for v3.88.0000. You'll see your machine in the supported list, so you could give that one a try, if you want.
    Regards.

The onscreen function key features generally depend on that driver. The thing is on my netbook the driver causes USB devices to fail after a few hibernations. Anybody in the know? Thanks.

I am very frustrated  with multiple power related issues on recently purchased HP ENVY mp4 Entertainment laptop which has Windows 8 installed.
    1. With default energy saving plan if I close the lid or use a different method to put laptop to sleep it would not later wake up when I open the lid or press keyboard/touchpad. I have to resort to hard reboot to start using it again.
    2. When I click Shut Down button in Charms > Settings > Power the screen goes dark but the light stays on power button and wi-fi key stays lit indicating that laptop is still on even after several minutes.
Is there an available update to power management software that I can install?

Update.  I allowed preinstalled HP Support Assistant to download and install BIOS update and after reboot my power management problems seem to be cured.  I feel better now.
Just as FYI - Geek Squad guys at Best Buy were useless trying to deal with this issue. Just wasted a ton of my time.

  • Reset power management unit (PMU) 12" PB Aliminium case

The Apple instructions for resetting the PMU are:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
I've followed the instructions and can't get the PMU to reset. (I understand that the date and time resets when the PMU resets thereby giving you an indication that it has been successful).
I must be doing something wrong though the instructions seem quite clear.
Is there a trick that I'm missing?
How long should I hold the'Shift-Control-Option-Power' keys down before I release them?
Grateful for any help or direction.

When you press the correct keys it works a treat. Problem solved.

  • Gnome 3.2 power management

    Hi everyone!
I installed gnome 3.2 from unstable, and I notice that now my power management is worst than ever.
The problem is that my graphics card, nvidia nvs 3100m, has some problems with DPMS. I can set the screen off with dpms, It works, but mouse or key activities won't bring the lights back up.
With this last gnome version, closing the laptop lid probably issues dpms commands, so to power the screen again I have to kill X11...
Closing the lid used to work as I wanted, before, letting the laptop (elitebook 8440p) itself handle the screen power.
I have tried settings "NODPMS" on xorg.conf, but had no luck. I also tried to find something in dconf-editor, but I found no specific option for really doing nothing when the laptop lid is closed.
It might be worth noting that my power settings don't show like this post advertised, I just have options on actions after determined time, not lid closing: http://justinstories.wordpress.com/2011 … lid-close/
This is *very* bad for me, gnome is completely unusable this way! Any helps?
Edit: oh, and the options in gnome tweak tool don't work anymore...

you shouldn't trust that website. that is ubuntu patching the hell out gnome.
for me, i setup the monitor to shutdown after 10 minutes from System Settings->Screen, it wakes up fine every time.
to configure what action to do when lid is closed, you have to use gsettings or dconf-edit.
    gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action
    'blank'

  • Media Keys

When I installed Windows 7 RC for the first time the media keys worked.
When I rebooted, they no longer work.
    How do I solve this?

Thank you guys for your help. However i have done both power down function and reinstalled the value added package. The media keys i'm talking about are on the left side of the keyboard under the power button. There is the Eco, Mute, movie, play/pause, reverse fast forward and fast forward and volume up and down. The power button lights up, the caps button lights up, the satellite word lights up on bottom left and above the touchpad and below the spacebar that lights up. I just can't use those keys. They use to work and I thought I had to do some checking in a box but I've gone throught the toshipa HS setup and my Bios is V3.10 11/30/09. I'm running windows 7 service pack 1 64 bit.
This has happend to me before when I had to do a sytem restore but I can't find or remember how to get them to work again. Also people have said use the function key and held down but I can't find anything that talkes about making those buttons work and light up.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

  • Xfce4-power-manager does not start, but after relogin - works

    Hi all.
When I login after system start, xfce4-power-manager does not start and systemtray icon doesn't appear. But after relogin (not restart), the systemtray icon of xfce4-power-manager appears and power manager itself works correctly (if I don't relogin, notebook will shutdown after 10 minutes of downtime - that rule doesn't exist in xfce4-power-manager settings).
Diff between two logs (before relogin and after, xfce4-power-manager --debug command)

    Can anyone help me?
p.s. sorry for a bad English.

Yes, i'm actually running xfce4 (all other things from xfce4 group are installed).
It starts from a login manager named LightDM.
    AcpiD installed as a dependency.

  • Power Management Driver wont install - SL500, Windows 7

Hi All, I've been trying to get my blue Fn keys to work on my recently purchased SL500.  Volume and screen brightness keys work (but no on-screen display), however Fn+F3 & F5 do nothing, same with the blue ThinkVantage button.  I've installed the drivers via System Update, however each time I get the message "Package did not install - ThinkPad Power Management Driver for SL Series".  The version number is 1.44.

    Regards.
