Power Nap: Apps need to be opened?

Hi,
I know that Mail needs to be opened to receive mails while in Power Nap. Same thing as while my mac is awake.
But what about all the other Apps?
And in general: Do I need to leave the App Store open to receive automatic system updates?
Thank you guys.

I'm not convinced it does software updates.  It says it does: email, calendar and other iCloud updates.
I've seen no sign of software updates being applied and I've been running this "awhile".

  • Does the server app need to stay open?

Probably a dumb question, but do I need to keep the Server.app running at all times?
Our server is a Mac Mini that doubles as a workstation.  Do I only need the Server app to set up/ start/ manage services, or does it need to be open all the time?

Server.app is "just" the GUI interface to the services.  You can start or stop Server.app as and when needed.  The services themselves won't be effected.

  • Does calendar app need to be open for iCloud sync?

    Hi @all,
I was just wondering the following about the sync function with iCloud: When I add a new calendar entry on my MacBook will it be pushed automatically to my iPhone from the cloud without having the actual calendar app open on the iPhone? I am asking because I am not frequently connected to a data network so what happens with this new entry in my calendar? Let's say I connect to a data network but don't open the calendar app. I leave the data network connection open for a while and then close it. After closing the data network connection I open the calendar app but the new entry does not appear. Will the new entry be synced to my iPhone only when I open the calendar app and only when I am connected to a data network at the same time?
    Thanks
    Martin

Define background.  Do you mean the app open but minimized or app is actually not open.  I have photos in my dock for quick access.  It is closed and does not have the dot underneath showing it is open but minimized.  If the app is completely closed is iCloud working in the background upload/downloading photos?

  • Power PC apps won't always open unless I quit another app

I just added a 2GB chip to my Intel iMac thinking Rosetta was devouring all my memory and causing an occasional problem of apps (Power PC) not opening when I try to open them. I'm glad I added the RAM (I'll need it eventually), but the problem is still happening. Sometimes, I double-click on an app and nothing happens. Or I've seen an automatic app (Office Notifications) trying to open, appearing and disappearing in the dock, unable to do so.
The apps that I seem to have the most problem with are Office X and Quicken 2004. Does the problem lie with those apps or is it something in the iMac itself?

Are your PPC apps up to current versions? Give this a try and see if it helps:
Open the Terminal app (Utilities folder) and at the prompt enter:
    sudo killall translated
Press return. You will be prompted for your admin password which will not be echoed.
If this helps then you can create an Applescript to run the command. Open the Applescript editor (/Applications/Applescript/ folder) and enter the following line:
set mystring to do shell script "sudo killall translated" with administrator privileges
Save the script then do a Save As and save it under a different name but this time as an application. If you have problems with a PPC app just double-click this application, authenticate, and it will run the Terminal command.

  • Does EVERY app need to remain open?!

Multitasking can be pretty cool on the iPhone - but is there any way to close an app completely rather then be forced to have EVERY app remain open?
For example, I may check a text message.
I press the home button to exit, but then need to click the home button twice to actually close the app from the multitasking bar.
Why cant I just close the app for good?
Would it be that difficult to have an option where you have the choice to either keep the app open, or terminate it completely?!

Multitasking has been supported with the iPhone since day one, but 3rd party apps could not run in the background until iOS4.
It is not a multitasking bar. It is a fast app switching and recently used apps bar. All apps - the included apps and 3rd party apps available in the fast app switching and recently used apps bar are not running in the background, so there is no need to be constantly removing apps from the fast app switching and recently used apps bar. Removing the Messages app from the recently used apps bar accomplishes nothing. It does not quit or close the app since the app always remains open in a suspended state for when a new message is received.
With 3rd party apps, the overwhelming majority of 3rd party apps will continue to be quit when pressing the home button to leave the app since there is no reason or benefit for the majority of 3rd party apps to be running in the background.
Some 3rd party apps such as a game will be placed in a suspended state when leaving the app so when returning to the game you can begin the game again where you left off instead of having to re-launching the app and beginning the game again from scratch. An app placed in a suspended state is not using any processor cycles or battery since it is suspended - open but not running in the background.
A few apps - very few apps such as a music streaming app and a GPS navigation app will run in the background when leaving the app.
Would it be that difficult to have an option where you have the choice to either keep the app open, or terminate it completely?!
This is up to the 3rd party developer for an app that includes the option to run in the background, which are few and far between.
This link explains how this works quite well.

  • Does Mail need to be open for emails to appear in Notifications?

I love the notifications feature in Mavericks, and in particular, I like that incoming emails pop up like in iOS. My question is, does Mail app need to be open for emails to appear in Notifications?

On the Mac, Mail needs to be open to be notified of incoming Mail. I tend  to leave the app open all the time, just collapsed into the Dock, getting notified by Notification Centre as emails arrive and leaving a red badge on the Mail icon in the Dock if Mail arrived whilst I was away.

  • Have can't open iphot because power pc apps are no longer supported

I recently burned up an 8 year old Mac (all in one machine) for lack of better terminology.
It was replaced with a MacMini so I could connect to an existing monitor.
Upon launching, I have an error, when I open iPhoto or iDVD, etc that says:  Can't open Iphoto because power pc apps are no longer supported.
What do I need to do now?
I'm assuming the software I had originally on my old machine is outdated?  But I also thought it was pre loaded with all the basic stuff.
AS you can tell I'm not the biggest user............ but I would like to be!

Sounds like someone restored your programs from you old PowerPC-based system to your new system, probably running OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion. Apple dropped the capability to run PowerPC-based code in these systems. You can go to Launch pad and access the App Store to buy updated versions of the iLife programs. However, iDvd is no longer available from Apple. You can buy iLife in a box from sources like Amazon.com that will have iDvd included, and possibly even by calling the Apple online store at, in the US, 800-MY-APPLE. Ask for the latest version of iLIfe with iDvd off the legacy products list.
You probably should click on the apple on the left of the menu bar, click about this mac, more info, systems report, and applications (which will take a few moments to display).  Click kind to sort the list. Any programs that say PowerPC won't run under 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion.

    Hi ...
Installing the OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) will reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed then try purchasing Aperture.

  • Does anyone know how to open power pc apps in Maveriks

I cannot open world book anymore since I upgraded to Mavericks.  I keep on getting a pop-up message saying power pc apps no longer supported.  Does anyone please please know how to fix this?

You can open your World Book by installing Snow Leopard Server ($20 - 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only)) into Parallels ($79) for use in Mavericks:

  • Deep into Power Nap

    Hi,
I have disabled Power Nap but I realize that it still is working when on AC. I have a set of rules in Mail.app to keep the mailboxes organized, and I have an iPhone where I only push the Inbox.
Problem is, I don't want Power Nap to update my e-,mail because it also distributes e-mail to the folders on the rules. Sometimes I only pick my macbook later on the day and I need to have all the e-mail I+m receiving on the IMAP inbox.
Does anyone know how to uninstall Power Nap? (macbook retina mid 2012 here)
    or better yet
Does anyone know how to go deeper on the Power Nap (maybe by editing preferences files) and select which operations I want Power Nap to do and not to do?
I know I can solve it by closing the Mail.app before I put my computer to sleep, but I actually like to keep it open, I keep all the apps I use on a daily basis open so when I wake it up it's faster to start working.
    Kind regards,
    João de Sousa Aroso

Going to try it, although it will make me have to check for mails manually while the laptop is on right?
edit: it doesn't. Somehow the mails are pushed to my laptop although mail is in manual setting. Nevertheless I don't believe this will solve the power nap issue. Mail.app behaviour is the same, even having manual checking or not.
Is there anyone who knows how to manually configure the actions while power naping?
    Thanks...

  • Why does power nap time machine backup not work on my August 2012 macbook pro retina?

Hello. I got a MacBook Pro with retina display in August of this year 2012. I have done the SMC ? firmware update and I have 10.8.2 installed on my machine. Power nap still doesn't seem to work. I have the button in energy saver preferences and I have clicked it so it looks like power nap should work. When I am running Time Machine backup with the time capsule and I close the lid (plugged into power) it appears that no progress is made when I reopen the lid. I have closed the lid with activity monitor running and with network displayed. When I reopen the lid it may take up to one minutes to come out of sleep. When it does come out  of sleep I can see that there has been no network traffic.  Eventually, time machine backup resumes and I can see several megabytes per second. When I closed the lid overnight, just to make sure backup didn't restart after lid closing, I saw that no progress had been made in backup when I reopened the lid.
What options are left if I already have 10.8.2 and I have done the required firmware?  One person has mentioned a clean install but I really don't like to have to reenter all the different passwords and all the different preferences again unless that's absolutely necessary. Are there any other options left to try before a clean install?
One other bit of information.  I have filevault turned on; however, it looks like others have a working power nap even with file vault enabled.  If this is not an option, the power nap button should be grayed out when the machine is in filevault.
    Thank you for any help.

Yeah I still have the same problem BTW; it still does not work.
The second I open the lid and take it out of sleep mode, it starts to backup automagically, but when it's sleeping EVEN when it's connected to AC power, TM backups do NOT work to my OS X Server.
I don't understand what the problem is here.
I didn't before but I do have FileVault turned on now -- should that make a difference?
In either situation it didn't work, but now that I think about it, I could understand why it wouldn't backup while asleep.  Apparently the encrypted volume will stay encrypted during sleep and even at the lock screen; it's not until you open the lid and log in from the lock screen that it will unlock the encrypted boot volume.
But even still, I did *not* have FV turned on before, and this still did not work.
Is there some third party solution that can do what I want this to do?
    Here's my use case:
1.) I have a mac mini at home that I use when I'm at home; it runs OS X server.app (bought and paid for) and has TM server turned on.
2.) I have a laptop that I mainly use at work and I don't use at all when I come home (ie. when I'm ready to head home for the day I close the lid and don't open it until I'm back at work the next day, but the laptop does come home with me every day).
What I want to have happen is this:
1.) The minute my laptop enters my home wifi lan (even though it's still asleep with lid closed) I want it to automatically backup the boot drive.
I thought that's what Power Nap was supposed to do, but then I found out that in order for this to work, you have to be connected to AC power; so then I tried that -- ie. every day I come home, I put my laptop in a docking station that has AC power, but TM backups while lid closed / sleeping STILL do not occur!
Thanks for your help everyone...Looking forward to a solution that works.
    EDIT:
    I found this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4158709
"It looks like Power Nap doesn't perform Time Capsule backups when the MacBook Air screen is closed."
So apparently that is yet *another* requirement to get powernap working.  The lid can not be closed.
What is the difference between sleep with lid open and sleep with lid closed!?

  • App Store won't open on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

I recently updated my mac to OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2 and during this a power cut happened. When I had finally got power back and turned on my mac it when to installing the new update as if I had just brought the mac brand new and was turning it on for the first place. After this happened and my iMac turned on I went to messages and found that it wouldn't open.
When I try to open the program I receive this:
Check with the developer to make sure that Messages Works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.
I have tried to open the app store to see if there is an update but my app store won't open. When it says its loaded I click on the icon and the current program I am on does change colour at the top as if I have changed programs but nothing actually comes up. This has been happening for days please help me! I have already tried to reset warnings and caches from iTunes. And I have tried to reset safari but I can't see to find the reset button for it.
    Thank you

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
