Power of Java to pick up where it left off

I am trying to develop a java application where if at some point a trigger is made, the JVM is stopped, and somehow saved somewhere / somehow and sent to another computer where this new pc will then carry on. Firstly is this possible?
It would be okay for there to be a slight delay and at the moment i am thinking about serializing the objects to the other system but i dont know if that would work. Any ideas?

Indeed it is but as a (possible) final year university
project unfortunately it has to be. It may be too ambitious for that.
The serialization point was merly my first thought but
after looking at the messages on this forum
possibilites of javaspaces, RMI and maybee even a
CORBA implementation have jumped out as being
technologies to help me. I have unfortunately not much
experiance with any of these and so any explanation of
either / any of them would be great.
Thanks.javaspaces - possibly, but I'm not so sure.
RMI - yes, this could help.
CORBA - CORBA technology is not specific to Java. RMI uses CORBA. You shouldn't have to think about CORBA (until you get vague CORBA exceptions)
The transferral of the data is the easy part. I think what's going to make this difficult is trying to Serialize an entire application. The only things that get serialized are non-static members of classes. If you Serialize a non-Serializable class, there are is no guarantee it will work. That means for this to work the way you are proposing, you cannot have any static varaibles and you cannot have any classes that are not Serializable in the application. These are very heavy constraints. It's going to be difficult to write a useful Java app that doesn't use static variables. And if you do, your process will only work with such applications. In addition, there are many classes in the SDK that aren't Serializable, so you can't use any of those either. Last of all, if for any reason the available classes on one JVM don't match up exactly with the available classes on another, the whole process will blow up in your face.

  • If I'm reading a book on the iPhone and I want to pick up where I left off on my iPad, do I have to search for what page I was on on the iPad or is there a way to sync it?

If I'm reading a book on the iPhone and I want to pick up where I left off on my iPad, do I have to search for what page I was on on the iPad or is there a way to sync it? Or do I just have to search for a string of text from my iPhone on my iPad?

On both devices go to Settings>iBooks>Sync Bookmarks>On. Then when you want to quit reading on one device, tap the bookmark in the upper right corner and it will turn red. That marks your place. Close the book on the device now by tapping on the Library button in the upper left corner of the app. That will put the closed book back on the shelf. Tap the home button.
On the other device, when you tap on the book, it should open to that page. You have to be connected to WiFi in order for this to work. You can read this older discussion for more information. I was involved in that as well.

  • Is it possible to have an audio book being read from an ipod nano - 6th generation - to pick up where it left off?

I just downloaded "Audible" so that I could listen to audio books on my 6th generation nano. When I shut off the ipod in the middle of a chapter and turn it back on, the book picks up at the start of the chapter. Is there a way to pick up where I left off?

They should automatically pick up right where you left off. I'm not sure what you mean that you just downloaded Audible.
Sync the audiobooks to the iPod and listen to them there by tapping  the audiobooks icon on your Nano

  • Why Won't My Podcast Pick Up Where It Left Off Downloading Like Others?

All the podcasts I subscribe to will pick up where it left off before it was cut off. That is, if I got to 30 MB out of 50 MB when an error occured, most podcasts pick up again at 30 MB isntead of starting back at 1 MB. Mine just get near the end and then start all over again after an error occurs.
    What's wrong?

    Hi Dalton,
Did you ever find a solution for this? I'm trying to download a 600mb video pocast from iTunes U and my internet connection is pretty shabby and drops out constantly, I get about 30mb in 5 minutes, then it drops out for 10 seconds or so and STUPID iTunes re-starts it from scratch...
This is extremely annoying, thank God I didn't ever try to purchase a movie from iTunes, I would never be able to fully download it!

  • How to play podcasts in order, and how to pick up where I left off?

I have several music podcasts I listen to. I made Smart playlists for each, so the podcasts show up in Playlists. Two questions: How do I play them in order? And, after I pause after listening to one, how do I continue listening when I wish? With the previous generation (the one with video capabilities), I could highlight the Smart playlist in Playlists and click the "play" button...all podcasts would play in order. If I switched away from the podcast and listened to the radio or even a different podcast, my Nano would remember where I left off. I love the new Nano and its tiny size, but the podcast thing is driving me batty. Thank you for your help.

Okay, I'm a dork. I accidentally swiped my volume screen this morning, and discovered the answers to all of my questions.

  • HT5544 Can iBooks remember my page between devices? Can I pick up where I left off on my iPad with my iPhone?

With Kindle and the Kindle app, if I change devices I am asked if I want to resume reading where I left off on <device> at <date and time>. I was trying to continue reading on my phone where I left off on my iPad. I have been unable to do this. Is it possible? I will decide which service to use for my next book purchase (the cost is the same on both Kindle and iBooks).

You should be able do it with iBooks - go into Settings > iBooks on both devices and set Sync Bookmarks 'on'

  • Deleting in Lion OS - How to pick up where I left off?

Not sure if many of you are familiar with this.
In Snow Leopard, say if you are browsing a large selection of files or images, and as your hit the "down" arrow key, you come across a file you want to delete. You then cmd-del and it's gone, the next file is then highlighted, and u can continue hitting the arrow key to continue browsing from where you left off.
In Lion, I noticed once I delete a file, it doesn't select the next file, so when I hit the "down" arrow, it starts right from the top!!!
It's actually quite annoying...anyone know if there's a solution or alternative approach?

  • Pick up where you left off with iMessage on handoff

Okay so you know how with Mail you can start an email and then finish it on a Mac with handoff, well I was wondering if anyone knows how to (if it's possible) to do the same thing with iMessage. Atm I can start a text on my iPhone and it pops up in bottom left corner of my mac dock but there is no text in the message bar to "continue" from, so basically it doesn't allow continuity for this app.
    Help

I'm having this exact issue. I don't get why handoff is so buggy.

  • Zen Xtra no longer remembers where I left off in a tr

    Hi,
I downloaded and installed the most recent drivers and firmware for my Zen Xtra, and now it doesn't remember where I left off in a track. I listen to long audiobooks in my car so this is very important.
I used to be able to power down and then when I came back to my car I could just turn it back on and pick up where I left off. Now it always goes back to where I left off many sessions ago, no matter how much I have played since then. In one particular audio book it always goes back to 2:59:0 or something, which is where I left off many many sessions ago.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    chris.

Both my 1st and 3rd generation models still work with resume, as does my 2nd generation models.
You are not on your own though, as others have reported similar issues. As yet I haven't seen a solution, but wonder what happens if you hold down the centre button and mark the movie as watched or unwatched and then try again.

  • Downloads resume from zero, not where they left off

I know this is a tired question, but it STILL HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED BY APPLE. Why do interrupted downloads start back at zero instead of picking up where they left off? Is this too difficult of a bug for the iTunes engineers to deal with? Being overseas in a country with very slow internet connections, this is the most irritating issue I've ever dealt with. It's almost impossible to download podcasts because they always get interrupted somehow, then I have to start from scratch every time. Thinking it's time to consider ditching Mac + iTunes for something more reliable....
Will someone from Apple please explain why downloads do not resume correctly?

I am having the same problems, and this is driving to distraction, if the internet line for a second runs to zero MB per sec, I get kicked off the download and have to start from the beginning. There must be a way to start where the download stopped.

  • Will Migration Assistant Continue Where It Left Off?

I'm transferring applications from my MacBook to my new MacBook Air via Migration Assistant over my wireless network. It's been transferring for over 24 hours, and says it will finish in 19 hours. I was wondering if aborting it prematurely (using Command-Q) would damage the applications or hardware, and if I continue the migration later, will it pick up where it left off or start again?

It's a really bad idea to use MA over wi-fi, depending on the amount of data you have it could take up to a week to complete! It's much wiser (and faster) to connect using FW or FW800 if both machines have it. Aborting mid migration will only result in an incomplete migration, in that case it's wise to reinstall OS X onto the new machine and start over this time connecting via FW.

  • Fails then starts where it left off? No it does not!

I am very frustrated with TC. I just bought it yesterday and have been trying since then--almost 24 hours to do my first back up. It has failed three times and I have spoken to applecare twice about it. Each time I have to restart the whole process again even though it clearly says that the TC should start where it left off if it stopped unexpectedly. This is so annoying and frustrating! Hours, and hours wasted!

Are you performing your backup wirelessly or via ethernet? It's suggested to connect via ethernet for the first backup and switch to wireless for following backups.
The reason it doesn't pick up where it left off is that the first backup needs to complete. I think that only happens after you complete the first backup. If the initial backup is interrupted, the sparsebundle file becomes corrupt and the backup needs to be started over. It's probably best to delete the sparsebundle file before backing up again.

  • Audio Books, how do I mark where I left off? in MuVo S

    Hi,
I just got a Creative MuVo Slim and have downloaded a .wma audio book for listening.
I just listened to 2 chapters and would like to bookmark where I've left off, so I don't have to relisten to them again. I can't find out which buttons to push to do this.
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks, Marilyn in Maine

Yes I did try shutting it off then on again, but had to listed to the first hour 3 different times (Grr, I can recite it backwards & forwards if you like).
I finally figured out that if I hit the PAUSE/PLAY button, then let it shut off automatically, it picks up where I left off previously. But this means I have to listen to the book and not switch to music if I want or the radio.
I guess Creative needs to look at adding another option to their design/software so that bookmarks can be placed.
    Thanks, Marilyn

  • I have Ipod nano 3rd generation that I use to listen to audiobooks in my car.  I turn the ipod off when I get out of the car and when I restart the ipod, it doesn't start where I left off.  Any suggestions

I recently received an Ipod nano 3rd generation, which I use to listen to audiobook in my car.  Every time I leave the car, I stop the Ipod and take it with me.  When I return to the car and start up the Ipod, it does not pick up where I left off in the book.  Any suggestions?

It could be that the CD player will only playback "Redbook" CD's from the previous position.
And starts mp3 type CD's from the beginnig.
    However.. it's not Logic related.

  • I have a 2009 A6 with a 5th Gen. iPod. I mostly listen to audio bks, not a lot of music. Often, the MMI starts on the first song on my iPod, therefore I don't know where I stopped in my 4-6 hr book.  How can I get MMI to start where I left off?

I have a 2009 A6 with a 5th Gen. iPod pluggedinto the MMI.  I mostly  listen to audio books, not a lot ofmusic.  The books are 4-6 hours long, vs 4-6minutes with a song.  Often, but not always, when I start my A6, the MMI starts on the first song on my iPod, thereforeI don't know where I stopped in my 4-6 hour book.  How can I get the interface to stay stopped where I left off?  I have gone into iTunes and placed my current book as the first "song" on my iPod for ease of finding it, but often the MMI starts it over at the beginning.  Thank you if anyone has any experience with this.  My dealer in San Rafael, CA says they've never heard of this issue.

I think my iPod, which is an iPod touch 3rd generation , which is a lot different from a nano, which really makes it almost impossible for me to help you, which is why I suggested that you post your question in the iPod nano community.  Your first post says that your product is an iPod nano. I think the people who answer those questions would be most likely to help you. If yours isn't a nano then you can pick the right community from here. This community is really to answer questions about this forum, or issues that don't fit anywhere else.
