Powerbook G4 freezes

Replaced old airport extreme base station with new one. Now, PowerBook G4 frequently freezes and must be restarted. How do I prevent this?

The following is the information from the log for my latest crash. I have been turning the airport off on my PowerBook before I shutdown and haven't had as many problems with it freezing as before. In addition, once I get booted up and am using the PowerBook, it freezes very little. In fact the freezing and kernel packs have been limited to turning the airport utility off on the Powerbook and starting up/shutting down the PowerBook. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

  • Powerbook G4 freeze on Boot up

I have a Mac user, the only Mac user of 500 employees, whose Powerbook now freeze on the boot process.
It freezes, though the mouse can move, with "Mac OS X" on the screen and an empty progress bar.
I believe he tried to update his OS to the latest rev. I am not sure what he is currently at, but I will say at least OS X (10.4.x).
I will not lie, I know BUPKIS about Macs. I have tried to boot to the CD to run a First Aid, but can not.
Can anyone suggest anything I can do. The only software I have on Disk is Mac OS X 10.1.
    Thank so much.

The main thing we need the CD for is to boot from the CD as an alternate boot device to Repair the Hard Drive. (Disk Utility in 10.3 can't even Verify the Hard drive when the System is already using it.) The other function used often, "Repair Permissions" can be done "live" while the System is running.
You can get most of the benefit of the"Repair" function in a pinch by booting from the Hard drive while holding down the Shift key to start in Safe Boot mode. When the kernel is loaded, but before Mac OS X is brought up, it will do a disk check and make Repairs if needed, then proceed to load Mac OS X with most extensions off. Enough of the System is working that you can use the Finder to move or delete something that is getting in the way.
You generally have to reboot normally to get your usual work done, but at least you know your Hard drive has been checked.

  • PowerBook G4 freezes, can't restart until it cools down

I have had a problem in the past week with my PowerBook. After using the computer for a while, the machine will freeze (cursor doesn't respond to trackpad action). Can't force quit applications or do anything that is related to keyboard input. The only thing I can do is shutdown by holding the power button for a couple of seconds. After this, if I try to restart, the machine starts with the chime sound and the fan starts, but the display is off and nothing happens after that. Tried safe boot ( pressing shift) and it still doesn't work. Tried reseting PMU (Shift-Control-Option-Power) and it's still the same. Tried booting from CD (pressing C) and nothing happens. Only after an hour of so of the machine being off, can I power it up.
Anybody has any insight on what could be happening?
Thanks in advance for any response.

Sounds like the power manager is overheating, or there is bad RAM, or something hardware wise that is causing the circuitry to overheat. Make sure you are following these tips for heat:

  • PowerBook keeps freezing after sleep.

I have a 1Ghz PowerBook that often freeze when I try to wake it up from sleep. The screen goes dark and a box appears in the middle telling me that I need to hold down the power button for a few seconds and to restart, it's written in a few different languages. I bought a new battery for it and have been having this problem since then. It never happened with my old battery, but I made sure that I calibrated the new one properly.
I'm running OSX 10.4.8 on it and have 1gb of memory.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what is happening and what I can do to stop it from happening anymore?
    Thanks.

You are experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc.#106227.
FJ has some good KP tips.
Or, do everything, in order, in Dr.Smokes Resolving Kernel Panics and don't leave out any steps (most used KP site in the forums).
Quote from Dr.Smoke "My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein"

  • Powerbook g4 Freezing issues

I found a cheap G4 powerbook (40$) that will almost surley be used for parts for another powerbook, but on the off chance it has a better processor then mine I might try to fix it and use my curret one for parts.
This is the ad: http://annapolis.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-computers-For-parts-or-repair-W0QQAdId Z339435718
And it says: "I have a Macbook G4 that I bought off Kijiji without know that it was deffective. It does not hold a charge, and it freezes a lot, about every other time you start it up, and it will stay frozen for hours. It has Internet Explorer 5.1 on it which won't allow any downloads, so I was unable to download a newer browser on it."
If the computer acutally boots up sometimes it would lead me to believe the computers not totaly gone and if it's running IE 5.1 it's almost surley got OS 9 on it. I'd be more willing to assume it's a software problem then hardware. (allthough I've had bad ram do some of the things described)
I'm just curious what everything thinks it could be. Because it it's a bit better then mine I might try to fix it so I figgure I should get some input early.

MacBooks never had G4s, and G4s were never called MacBooks.  I would not buy from someone who doesn't know their machine.  See my FAQ* on buying used and refurbished equipment: http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html

  • PowerBook Constant Freeze and Graphics Problems

I have a Powerbook 12" 1.33Ghz Leopard 10.5.2 , I star to work in anything and in a few minutes its freezes and appears a Kernel Panic or de backend System Text start to output reports overwriting the last graphic image.. here a picture..
    http://cyberkiko3d.com/down/photo.jpg
I remove the memory card, and stills hapening..
I want to know is this is just a kernel problem that it stops formating or is a hardware problem involving the LogicBoard or Graphic Card..
    Thanks

I guess memory can fail over time. I just haven't experienced it myself. (Or heard of it, but it is a piece of hardware).
You can test your RAM by either using your system installation / restore discs (the original grey discs that came with your machine) and pop in Disc 1 and reboot the computer holding down the OPTION key and from there, you will get the choice for Apple Hardware Test, which you can use to do a basic test of your RAM.
Second, if you ever signed up for AppleCare and got the TechTool Deluxe disc that comes with it, you can use that too for a more extensive RAM test. Just be careful not to use it to diagnose anything with your hard drive. Just use it for RAM. (Be warned, as their is an incompatibility with Tiger that can ruin your drive. Though I see you have Leopard, so don't even know if it works).
The other test you can do, as suggested by many of the top users in these forums is "Rember" which tests your RAM and should let you know what's going on. I used it once after using it as a suggestion (taking someone else's suggestion and using it for my own testing) and it showed the second module of memory that I bought on eBay--the one that doesn't cause kernel panics--to pass.
You can find that here: [http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember>
Also, when you get your RAM replacement, I highly recommend getting Apple OEM suppliers such as modules from Samsung, Hynix, or Micron (manufactured by Crucial). They should be trouble free.
I say should because the Samsung 1GB module I bought for my 12-inch PowerBook from OtherWorld Computing has worked flawlessly for almost two years now. The one I was talking about previously, that crashed my 15-inch machine? A Samsung one as well. So, it is true that these Aluminum PowerBook G4s are picky about the RAM installed.

I forgot to ask you... what brand RAM do you have installed? (If you know and it is labeled).

  • 17 " Powerbook G4 freezes after sleep

    I have a "17 Powerbook G4 1.33GHZ  768 Ram osx leopard 10.5
everytime I wake it from sleep the screen comes back up everything apears on the bar across the top except the wifi symbol.
When you try to use it it will work for like a second then freeze.
could this be a ram issue maybe?

I'm more incline to lead toward there being a fault with the logic board, however there wouldn't be any harm in trying some different RAM modules in your PowerBook to see if that makes any different. There could be a number of reasons why this happens. I've known an iBook to have done this in the past and that turned out to be a fault with the logic board mainly around the graphic controller.
Try some more memory and see if that helps.

  • Powerbook Locks/Freezes Randomly

Still fighting this issue. New RAM, 4 OS installs, Disk Utility drive verify/repair, reset PMU, Apple Hardware Test run in loop mode for 24 hours, you name it.
The machine will hum along fine for days, then freezes. I can hear the drive running and the fans running. No display corruption.
I know it's probably the logic board but I'm looking at everything before having that replaced. This is the message I found after the last freeze event. Note that there is no panic.log file produced when these events occur.

Maybe that's what the system writes when I press the power button down - I don't really know.
Any thoughts on what I can or should try or do would be appreciated.

Ok. The machine JUST froze again. I did download and run a third part memory program but will do so again. Last time around I booted from my backup external firewire and the machine still freezes.

  • Powerbook g4 freezing after restart while using install and restore cd

i want to restore my powerbook to the original settings. i insert the install and restore cd that came with my computer and after i click the install mac os x icon, the computer prompts to restart. when the computer starts to restart, it freezes and won't read from the disc. it just continues to give the message you need to restart your computer.
anyone have any suggestions or help in this matter.
    thanks,

if PowerBook crashes like that when booted from original install CD, it is likely hardware problem.
try removing extra RAM, pull out AirPort card, reset PRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
and make sure CD is not scratched/dirty.
if you have original CDs kit, there supposed to be hardware test CD included with it, boot from test CD, see what it says.

  • PowerBook g4 Freezing.

hi, my powerbook g4 it's freezing while i'm using it, just want to know how to solve this problem that's been bothering me? tnx, Diogo.

    OK, disk space okeedokee.
If this happens when you use Safari, have you tried another browser? Try Firefox from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/3.6.18/mac/en-US/ or Opera from http://www.opera.com/ . If one of those works and doesn't lock the system up, there's a Safari-related issue.
If it appears to be a Safari issue, find com.apple.safari.plist in your library/preferences, and rename it to com.apple.safari.save, or just delete it. Safari will create a new one next time it loads. Sometimes the plist file for a program can become scrambled, and creating a new one fixes it.

  • PowerBook not freezing and not starting!

    Hey guys and gals,
Recently I was using my powerbook and it started to slow down, unfortunately I was leaving a class so I just closed it and when I got home I opened it and it was frozen on the last screen. I tried restarting it but it would just go to a grey screen. I used my home pc to check out the support forums and tried to restart while simultaneously pressing on the shift-option-control buttons. Which rebooted somethign but I am not sure what. PMC maybe? This helped to restart it and get to my desktop but now my computer will work for a while but then starts to slow down again and eventually freezes. What is going on? There were no warning signs for this, everything had been working fine. I still have plenty of space available on my hard drive so I don't think it would be a lack of space. Any guesses or solutions?
    Much appreciated.
    Jon

    Jon:
    Try b>Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Sel<ect your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but <b>Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Please post back with results.

  • Powerbook G4 freezes on me - memory problems..?

    Hi all,
I have just bought a new Powerbook G4 15inch as i read all sorts of varying articles on Macbook Pro's teething problems with Adobe etc so decided to go for the tried and trusted good old Powerbook.
So i got the retailer to boost it from 512mg to 2gb in the shop and after giving it a good workout (installing Illustrator, photoshop, microsoft etc) and playing with Itunes i find that it freezes on me every 15mins or so..! I'm told it could be a memory problem (maybe the 2 new 1gbs are not compatible). Or should i reinstall Tiger..?
    Any advice is welcome.. help..!

    Hello, Shane,
No, I've not had trouble with freezes on my powerbook. I did have a little trouble clicking in the RAM on the top slot properly, both on my PB and on a friend's, but in these cases, the PB beeped three times on startup (RAM "distress signal").
It has been my understanding that system freezes are often caused by faulty hardware--RAM, a peripheral device that is misbehaving, or a more serious problem such as logic board.
Running the hardware test in extended mode would help with this.
Some people have reported that they have solved system freezes when all the hardware checks out by doing an archive/installation of their operating system, or erasing the drive and re-installing from scratch.
    Good luck.

I also would be remiss in not pointing out that since your Powerbook is new, Apple is available to help you troubleshoot, and in case there is a serious hardware issue, making an early report is advisable.

  • Powerbook is freezing, AHT?

    Hello,
my Powerbook 12" 867MHz often freezes after some time. I don't have the Apple Hardware Test CD any more. Can anyone help me with that? I think it needs AHT v. 2.0.2, 2.0.5, 2.0.6 or 2.5.2.
    Thanks

    Thank you for your answer.
I downloaded the image for the 867MHz Powerbook G4 from that link(AHT v. 1.2.3) and burned it. But my Powerbook won't start from the CD, it just continues the OS X startup. Then I looked it up at Mactracker, which says that it requires AHT v. 2.0.2, 2.0.5, 2.0.6 or 2.5.2. Maybe the 12" Powerbook G4 works with a different version of Hardware Test than the 15" and the image on that link is only for the 15" model. I checked my Original OS X DVD, but it contains only the system software, no Hardware Test. As far as I can remember the AHT was shipped on a separate CD, but I don't have it any more.

  • Fan problem causing my powerbook to freeze...

i have a bit of a weird problem...
first off, when i use my powerbook, everything sounds alright, but when i tilt my computer (from horizontal) the fan makes a louder noise. i sent it to applecare a few weeks ago and they were supposed to have fixed this problem (along with replacing my casing).
now, without any specific pattern, my computer will start to freeze with the use of any and all programs. i use 4-5 programs at a time, which is the same as before, before this problem started. the only change ive made to my setup is the use of an external monitor. at first i was using the computer with the lid down (while plugged into a 3-fan usb platform). the spinning pinwheel problem started to show up more and more so i started using the powerbook with the lid open and the additional monitor.
the oddest thing about this problem is that the freezing (spinning pinwheel) will go away and back to normal use if i tilt my computer from horiztonal (making that louder fan noise).
does anyone out there know what is going on with my powerbook?
    PLEASE HELP!!!

You mentioned that you got router and the adapter, is the adapter connected to the computer? In most cases the adapter when connected to computer due to some hardware conflict with other devices causes the computer to freeze or get the blue screen error. It should not be cause of the router.

  • PowerBook G4 freezing randomly

My PowerBook G4 (1.67) has worked flawlessly for 2 years, but just a few days ago it began freezing randomly. It freezes completely, without warning or slowdown. I have to shut it off manually each time. Sometimes it freezes after running only a few minutes, other times it freezes after several hours of normal workload.
It doesn't seem to be related to anything I'm doing at the time, as each time it has been different circumstances. The last time it was idle with only iTunes running.
I am running OS 10.4.9, but the problem began before I installed the OS X update, so I know that is not the cause.
Is there anything I can do to further troubleshoot the problem before sending it in? Any clues as to what might be causing this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, BPMayer.
Apart from what has already been suggested by joeuu, it is possible that your problem may be either hard drive or logic board related. Certainly something to test for and, hopefully, rule out.
Therefore the first thing I would recommend is that you make sure any important data is fully backed up immediately. If you don't have an external backup drive (preferably a FireWire drive), then this is a very good time to get one.
Next try restarting from the original installer disc and then using Disk Utility to check the state of the hard drive. At the same time see what the SMART status (located at the bottom of the DU window) says. If it says anything other than "Verified" then the hard drive is the source of the problems.
Another thing to try is the Apple Hardware Test. This may reveal any problems with the internal hardware.
Unfortunately hard drive failures can, and do, happen fairly often with any computer that uses one as a storage device. Therefore it is a problem that can afflict any brand of computer, not just restricted to Apple, and (unfortunately) seems to be much more prevalent nowadays.
Fortunately, providing you have your important data backed up, it is not too traumatic and replacing them is not overly expensive (when compared to other major component failures).
Logic board failures can occur but, thankfully, appears to be rarer than drive failures. Whilst they can be expensive to replace, your data should not be at risk (unlike with a drive failure).
