Powersave Problem

I have a problem using the powersave package.
When I do a suspend, it appears to work as it should.  That is, it goes to sleep and when I hit a key it wakes up.  Magic!  The problem is after it wakes up, I have no network.  If I do an 'ifconfig' my eth0 is gone.
Anyone know how I can fix this?  It is driving me crazy.

I have the same - in my case the thing is that the wireless driver (ath_pci) is blacklisted - it needs to be unloaded for suspend2 to work. On resume, it gets loaded back but the network connection is of course gone. I gave up on this and just made an alias for the command "/etc/rc.d/network restart", which kicks it up back.
I'm not sure if it's the same in your case, or you actually have a problem with the kernel module (y'know, "lsmod" before and after suspending is your friend).

  • Gdm crash: bumblebee graphics or pm-powersave problem

I updated my system this morning, and gdm hangs on startup now.
Looking in my logs, I see messages related to either intel graphics, or pm-powersave. I'm not sure what the problem is, any help would be appreciated!
I have a laptop with optimus, with nvidia/intel. As of this update bumblebee is in the official repositories, so I removed the AUR versions I had, and installed
    $sudo pacman -S intel-dri xf86-video-intel bumblebee nvidia
I can run startx, and as seen in the X log, the intel driver seems to load.
Here are the relevant logs. The errors are at the bottom of each log, and I clipped some of  them to start at the moment I run 'systemctl start gdm':

kernel.log also gets corrupted, but it's last messages are related to wlan and and were logged long before the crash.

Update: I was able to log into gdm for most of the day and could work, though I haven't really solved the problem.
I found that if I run startx and then use optirun to run some program (eg glxgears), I can then stop X and start gdm. So clearly this is a graphics driver/optimus issue, and it seems something needs to be loaded before gdm starts that isn't. Comparing the output of lsmod before and after I see no new modules loaded, so I'm not sure what I'm missing.

  • How to recover from a stupid chown command "chown -hR userA /." ??

    greetings
i am a terrible newbie of linux.
and when i am trying to chown one directory /home/someone/dX to be owned by account , say userA, i stupidly cd to /home/someone/dX and using the below command as a root:
    chown -hR userA /.
I cant exlain why i did this, but the result is that nearly all the directory/files of the computer become owned by userA.
My question is , is there any way to restore all my changes caused by this command...
Last edited by samp (2008-02-28 17:42:43)

It should be possible to recover to get a working system. My son did an identical thing trying to set the mount point for his external caddy to be owned by his user. This was on SimplyMEPIS 64.
He had everything owned by jon:users, so here are excerpts from my emails (using guest user on my Mepis 32 system):
    DON'T DO THIS:
I mucked up my 32 bit Mepis "su" (roughly in the same way as you?) I su'd and cd'd to / then
    chown -R guest *
    chown -R root *
    chown -R guest /home/guest
Logging into guest I had the same problems i.e. got invalid password when su
from in a terminal or when running mepis system stuff from kmenu (uses kdesu)
    DO THIS:
    This should solve it:
    Login in as root
run konqueror and navigate to /bin
    right click on su
    click the permissions tab
check the box "user: Set UID"
click on OK to close etc
You should know be able to log in as jon and use su and kdesu
    his response was:
Since reseting the profile using the User Manager when I start up I get an error saying I;m not permitted to connect to the powersave daemon via DBUS, however I haven't noticed any ill-effects.
Well mostly fixed anyway.  I can still enter the password on synaptic etc. but for some reason if I am changing between sessions it wouldn't accept the password for 'jon'.  Not that this is a huge problem.
    My response was
Me too. Tick the "Set UID" box for /usr/bin/kcheckpass
On my Arch linux, the following programs are UID or GID:
    $ ls -l /opt/kde/bin/ | grep "sr-"
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root      2852 2007-11-10 20:54 fileshareset
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root     15194 2008-01-26 17:45 kcheckpass
    -rwxr-sr-x 1 root nobody   56265 2008-01-26 17:46 kdesud
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root      5876 2007-11-10 20:54 kgrantpty
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root    567112 2007-10-14 22:28 kppp
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root      5500 2007-11-10 20:54 start_kdeinit
Mepis has those programs in /usr/bin. "s" in the first block means "Set
UID", "s" in the second block (kdesud) means "Set GID".
The powersave problem may be due to start_kdeinit not being able to run as
root so let me know if that is fixed by the above mod.
Of course some ownerships are still wrong (nobody etc) so I guess security isn't quite up to scratch.
That was on 4th Feb and it is his main system - no problems reported back so far.
Basically, chown everything (/, recursively) to root, chown each users home recursively to that user, then deal with a few set UID & GID problems.

  • Problem with powersaving stuff in rc.local

    Hi,
I have a strange problem with the entries in my rc.local which are relevant for powersaving. First the file, which looks like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.local: Local multi-user startup script.
#avoid hdd spindown for longer life :)
    hdparm -B 254 -S 0 /dev/sda
    #set lower cpu voltages
    echo "25 23 21 17" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/phc_vids
    echo "25 23 21 17" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/phc_vids
    #use sata link power management
    echo "min_power" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy
    echo "min_power" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/link_power_management_policy
    echo "min_power" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host2/link_power_management_policy
    echo "min_power" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host3/link_power_management_policy
#set power saving mode for hda_intel
    echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
    #increase writeback time to 15s
    echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
    #disable unused outputs
    xrandr --output DP1 --off
    xrandr --output DP2 --off
    xrandr --output TV1 --off
    xrandr --output HDMI1 --off
#enable kernel laptop mode for i/o
    echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode
    #enable wlan power saving mode
    iwconfig wlan0 power on
Not e.g. the phc_vids are written correctly, which means that they are exactly what I set in rc.local when I check them. Same goes for hda_intel powersave, but e.g. the line
    echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode
(is 0 when I check it after booting) or the link_power_management_policy stuff (is set to max_performance when I check it) seem to have no influence. Though, when I set these manually, they work like a charm.
Does anyone have an idea why this happens? Thanks in advance

    Hi Singul,
just a wild guess - but maybe it could help, to issue the commands, which doesn't work, with "sleep". I played around with it myself some time ago and it helps to start some processes when the computer / hard drive isn't stressed as much after booting the system. It's worth a try.
    Example:
    sleep 60 && echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode &

    Hi, Beverley.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are unable to trim clips using iMovie.  I would need a little more information on how you were attempting to trim a clip to provide a better answer.  However, make sure you have the movie project open and are selecting the clip that you wish to trim as this will activate the clip trimmer.

  • Problems with ati radeon powersaving and vboxdrv

    Hi
I use an old Laptop with an ATI Radeon Mobility x300:
    $ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]
, Kernel 2.6.36.1 and the latest xorg/radeon packages.
To use the powersaving features, I have
    echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
in /etc/rc.local. This works as expected, but when I load the vbox-modules on startup, I get the following errors:
vboxdrv: Trying to deactivate the NMI watchdog permanently...
vboxdrv: Warning: 2.6.31+ kernel detected. Most likely the hardware performance
vboxdrv: counter framework which can generate NMIs is active. You have to prevent
vboxdrv: the usage of hardware performance counters by
    vboxdrv: echo 2 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_counter_paranoid
    vboxdrv: Found 1 processor cores.
vboxdrv: TSC mode is 'synchronous', kernel timer mode is 'normal'.
vboxdrv: Successfully loaded version 3.2.10 (interface 0x00140001).
AND when after that, when /etc/rc.local is executed:
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason a0 on CPU 0. You have some hardware problem, likely on the PCI bus. Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
If I disable these modules on startup, everything is OK, so it seems that the vbox-driver has something to do with it.
Do I have to worry about this and is there a fix for this problem?

  • 6233 - Problems with powersaving

Hi, Can anyone please advise me on a problem regarding my new phone which the company has provided me with. Its a Nokia 6233 and I am having several problems with it compared with my old Nokia 6310i. The worst of which is that it appears to keep switching itself off! I have found the Power Saver and switched that off, also the sleep mode and that too I've switched off leaving (as far as I can tell) only the Active Standby set to 'My active standby'. I assumed that this would just switch off the display until I pressed Menu or a call was recieved. However instead when I leave the phone in my pocket for a few hours, I take it out only to find that the whole phone has switched itself off! Clearly no business phone would be of any worth if it was set to do this so I must be missing an obvious setting to prevent this from happening. The manual, which can I just say is the worst I have ever recieved with any phone, does not explain what these various power saving features actually do so I would welcome any advise you could give me, thanks in advance.

Can I just say something here... the whole turning off thing is it s sleep mode to preserve battery
One touch of a button or unlock command and the screen is alive again Message Edited by tehrules on 27-Sep-2006

About a week ago i reinstalled Windows because it started to slow down (virusses and what not) And as soon as i reinstalled everything (programs games etc etc) One of my harddrives used for games did not show up at the bios and at My computer.
So this entire week i've been trying to get it to work again and i've narrowed down the problem today to the BIOS and/or motherboard not giving the power to the HDD in order for it to start and be recognized in BIOS and Windows.
What ive done to come to this conclusion:
    - Reinstalled Windows twice,
    - Replaced CMOS Battery,
    - Flashed the BIOS to every BIOS setting the MSI website had to offer. None worked for the HDD to get powered up again.
    - Moved CMOS jumper,
    - Changed SATA and powercables on harddrive,
    - Tried the HDD on another test PC i had and reformatted it there as well,
    - Only hooked up the not working HDD to the PC, (HDD did not spin up, and came to the conclusion at this point that motherboard or BIOS is the culprit)
    - Unplugged the powercable to the not working HDD and plugged it back in when the PC was running and i could feel it spinning up, after this i restarted the PC so that the HDD would still get power and it was recognized by the BIOS and Windows and i could use it. As soon as i shut down the PC entirely and restarted it the HDD would not spin up. And i had to unplug power to the HDD and plug it in again and restart PC for it to work properly.
    - Checked for bad sectors nothing found,
Everything else is working perfectly. Except that one HDD not getting the power when booting up the PC.
The HDD in question is the "Samsung HD502HJ 500gig" used for Steam games.
    PC Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black edition. Put on a new CPU cooler last summer (Cooler master Hyper 212 Plus)
    Mobo: MSI 870a-G54
PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA650 (650 Watts)
Graphics card: Powercolor PCS+ HD5870 Put on a custom cooler last summer (Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5870)
    RAM: Kingston ValueRam 1333Mhz DDR3 (8gigs 4x 2gig) Bought 4 gigs extra last summer
HDD1: Seagate ST3160812 AS 160gig used for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (Works perfectly)
HDD2: Samsung HD204UI 2TB used for Storage / Other games than i have on Steam. (works perfectly) Bought last summer with the cooling/system upgrade
HDD3: Samsung HD502HJ 500gig used for Steam games. (Does not work anymore after reinstal) Bought 2 years ago along with the rest of the PC
I am completely at a loss here as to what the problem is. I do not have the funds to buy a new piece of hardware at this time (i think the entire week of struggle would back that up for me lol...). And ive basically tried everything what i know and what i've found through Google and friends. Might have been better going straight to MSI forum and post my problem here but narrowing it down to this not only helps me but the person that is going to post below in this thread as well lol.
Thanks in advance and i hope to hear from anyone soon.

Try drive in different PC, as it looks like it died.
HDD's always spinup as soon as power is applied, ergo I think the drive died.
Ive tried it already in 2 different PC's and i have to apologize here for not mentioning that earlier in the topic.
The drive spins up perfectly in both of those PC's and ive checked for bad sectors on both of those PC's as well and it showed that the drive was 100% healthy on both PC's
The drive was working perfectly fine before the reinstallation of windows. Thats why i dont think the drive has died. Because it would be weird that the drive just suddenly gave up right when im reinstalling windows..
It also doesnt add up when i plug the powercable back into the drive while the PC is running and it spins up then and works perfectly until PC is shut down. Thats why i had it narrowed down to the BIOS and/or Motherboard being the culprit.
My best guess is that its software related because the PC does boot up so its not a hardware problem.
    P.S.
A friend of mine said that it could be a powersaving issue. But ive looked into the BIOS and i could not find anything about it.

  • My iphone 4s will not find my printer 6500A 710n-z when in powersave/sleep mode.

My iphone 4s will not find my 6500A  710n-z when in powersave/sleep mode.  I really don't want to disable the powersave mode...it already has latests firmware installed.  Suggestions?  It will print if I wake up the printer by hitting the power button to wake it manually.

I had this problem for about 3 months Now, but today I think I fix it,  by clicking on SETTINGS and then DO NOT DISTURB and switching MANUAL from green to White, now I receive my calls, try this it worked for me..:)

  • Problems resuming from suspend on IBM Thinkpad R51

I have been searching the forums and google for the past several days trying to fix this problem. When I enter suspend through fn+f4 or close the lid, I am unable to resume from suspend status, and must hard shutdown.
I followed the instructions with my device IDs from this post, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1030435
This link seems like it might work, but there aren't any of the /etc/sbin/* or /etc/bin/* files  :: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ACPI_acti … ed_for_R51

  • Lenovo Ideapad s205 ACPI Problem?

I have installed Arch linux in to subject notebook. Wile installing I skip efi support and boot with syslinux (not grub). This is first time I meet motherboard with efi support, so I'm not quite sure I have to reinstall distro. My installation works just fine except wifi and webcam. I switched off helibirnate and sleep timer in kde powermanager but I found wifi works extremly slow after half an hour (or less) inaktivity. Webcam dissapear also. Is there some kine of service that manages powersaving running with systemd or should I boot with full efi support?

I have the same problem with webcam. It works for nearly 20-30 mins after reboot and then /dev/video0 disappears. This appears in /var/log/messages.log during the system boot:

The output of lsusb utility while webcam is still alive:

I have the same configuration as mentioned above, except using grub instead of syslinux. Also, wi-fi works fine. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue?

  • Problem with Dell 2208WFP

This is doing my head in.Just got the above monitor which is replacing my old VGA Viewsonic but it just keeps on going to powersave mode. However if I disconnect the VGA cable from the Viewsonic and put it in the Dell it works!.I've tried VGA and DVI in port 1+2,gone over to XP on a seperate internal HD,uninstalled CCC,loaded Dell drivers and thrown a couple of fits.Dell support lost the plot as soon as I mentioned Mac,so no joy there.
    Please help!.

You're welcome. My post was possibly misconstrued as a dig at Apple, hence the rapid deletion. It wasn't.
Even in the Free West, our rights to free speech are layered in exceptions, and every opportunity to control that right is sadly exercised.I love Apple, but I also love Dell, just because I buy one or the other doesn't automatically mean I have to become a blind disciple of the Company and believe the huge Advertising spiel as gospel,it's just people wanting you to be persuaded to spend your money. When you do,and have problems, the true devotion of the Company towards it's customers has the opportunity to shine through and win your confidence, hence brand loyalty.
Being an old and largely sceptical person,I buy on the "make my work efficient principle",not if it looks nice or has attractive people saying how wonderful their products are.
I just really dislike the attitude of some of the members here on this forum,it reminds me of book burning.
I do hope your problem is rectified and you can continue working.

  • Old problem with precision time counting and /usepmtimer solution.

    Hello, all!
There was a problem in Windows XP and 2003 Server with using QueryPerformanceCouner() function. Sometimes it can cause problem with precision time measurements on CPUs which support powersaving modes by changing clock frequency. The simplest solution for that was /usepmtimer key in boot.ini file which forces the system to use another timer.
I just want to know does this problem appear in Windoes 7? And how to solve it since there is no boot.ini file in Windows 7?
    Thanks a lot!
P.S. This is a page with detailed description of the problem:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/895980

    Hi ,
There is official documentation released on userpmtimer for windows 7 operating system.
Also the KB article only refere to the OS which have performance problem.
After reading the below article , i feel that this problem is taken care in windows 7 / windows 2008 ( though there is no formal written documentation )
    http://blogs.technet.com/perfguru/archive/2008/02/18/explanation-for-the-usepmtimer-switch-in-the-boot-ini.aspx
you can post in windows 7 dedicated forum, so that MVP / Microsoft Engineers and community members would suggest you with latest data if any.
