Query to get sql server version information?
Hi!
I'm new to sql and would appreciate it if anyone could show me the query that i need to type to get the server version information - I do not have direct access to the sql database (doing some work on an old website that runs on windows box w/ coldfusion :p)
appreciate it!You could try this.
Select SERVERPROPERTY('productversion') As [Version],
SERVERPROPERTY('productlevel') As [Level],
SERVERPROPERTY('edition') As [Edition]
It will produce output like this.
Version Level Edition
9.00.4035.00 SP3 Developer Edition
Hope that helps.Nathon Dalton

Hi
I get this warning running through powershell_ise but through sql agent it just errors out.
The code does everything it is supposed to and I tried everything to completely resolve the warning to no avail.
How do I supress it so sql agent wont error out running powershell code?
Thanks!
WARNING: Could not obtain SQL Server Service information. An attempt to connect to WMI on 'server_name' failed with the following error: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))
Warning only present when it connects to remote servers, it doesn't produce it for local server. And it does get all info from the remote servers.
PaulaHi paulata,
According to your description, when you run powershell scripts about the remote machine
in SQL Server Agent job, the warning error will occur. “The common error message is Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)).” This suggests that your credentials aren't sufficient for accessing the
remote system. If you have an account that has sufficient permissions for the query, there's a simple workaround for this problem in the form of PowerShell's Get-Credential command and the script's Credential parameter. I recommend you check if your account
has permission on remote machine and it can execute the powershell scripts.
In addition, if you want to run query statement on the remote machine , I recommend you create Linked Server, then do some related operations. There is a similar issue about access denied, you can review the following article.

Unable to get SQL Server Agent to run after installing SQL 2012 Standard with SP1
I am unable to get SQL Server Agent to run after installing SQL 2012 Standard with SP1. Log message is as follows:
Attempting to load library 'xplog70.dll' into memory. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.
Failed to verify Authenticode signature on DLL 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn\xplog70.dll'.
Error: 17750, Severity: 16, State: 0.
Could not load the DLL xplog70.dll, or one of the DLLs it references. Reason: (null).Hi JFriedley,
According to your error message, there might three reasons for this issue.
xplog70.dll is corrupt, you need to check if you have any SQL Server running on same file version and same production
edition. If xplog70.dll is corrupt, you can copy it from the new server where agent is running fine to your problematic server.
Native client not installed properly. If you try applying any latest Service Pack or Cumulative Update then check if the SQL Server Agent can start, if that also doesn’t solve issue then try to reinstalling SQL Server Native client from SQL Server setup
files.
There is a similar issue about error 17750, you can review the following article.

Problem: VSS error with 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool' installed
When 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool' is installed, shadow copies cannot be enable and backups fail. When attempting to enable shadow copies, we get a "volsnap" error: "The shadow copies of volume X were aborted because
of a failed free space computation". After uninstalling the "Tool", VSS works. Reinstalling "Tool" causes the problem to return.
While the error suggests a space issue, there is plenty of space on the server's two volumes. Additionally, another 100GB volume was added and VSS storage was allocated to it; still received the error.
Issue seems to point to 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool'.
Environment: Hyper-V guest: "Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard" with "SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard". Using "Azure Storage" for SQL backups.
Suggestions?Hello,
Yes, we have a confirmed interference between the tool and the VSS Framework. This was identified very recently and is under investigation by the product group. Since the issue is within the filter driver shipped by the tool, that unfortunately means that
you currently need to choose between the tool and a working VSS Framework. If the latter is more important, then uninstall the tool (that will require a restart).
We apolologize for the inconvenience. I'm going to try to get the home page of the tool updated to avoid other situations like yours. Hopefully we should see a new version of the tool soon.
As a side note, recent versions of SQL Server can directly use Azure Storage as backup target, see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj919148(v=sql.110).aspx.

I am a software developer using Windows 8.1, Visual Studio 2013, and SQL Server 2014. I have a number (30+) of SQL Server databases that I use in my development and support activities.
Every time I run a backup (full or incremental) all of the backup devices in my instance of SQL Server 2014 are being deleted. I can add them all back in (a time-consuming and irritating process after about the 5th time), and the very next time I run either
the Acronis Backup and Paragon Hard Drive Backup against the volume (D:) that contains all of the .mdf and .ldf files, all of the backup devices are again deleted.
I hope someone can give me some idea of how to get around this problem or how to eliminate it completely. Should I not be using these types of backup utilities to copy the .mdf's and .ldf's? I've just never seen backup devices be deleted from SQL
Server. I have dumped the contents of the backup devices data within SQL Server and the rows are definitely gone after the either of the backups run.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this problem. It is very time-consuming and seems pretty silly to me -- but it's happening nonetheless. The last backup location you use is never stored in sys.backup_devices. That's an instance-wide table for registering shared backup locations, mosly for tape backups in the old days.
Per-database backup history is stored in msdb, and AFAIK the database backup dialog in SSMS is pre-populated with a location from msdb. It looks like it runs this query
exec sp_executesql N'SELECT
bkpmf.media_family_id AS [ID],
bkpmf.family_sequence_number AS [FamilySequenceNumber],
bkpmf.media_count AS [MediaCount],
bkpmf.logical_device_name AS [LogicalDeviceName],
bkpmf.physical_device_name AS [PhysicalDeviceName],
CASE WHEN bkpmf.device_type > 100 THEN bkpmf.device_type - 100 ELSE bkpmf.device_type END AS [BackupDeviceType],
CAST(CASE WHEN bkpmf.device_type > 100 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END AS bit) AS [IsBackupDevicePermanent],
bkpmf.physical_block_size AS [PhysicalBlockSize]
FROM
msdb.dbo.backupmediaset bkpms
INNER JOIN msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily bkpmf ON bkpmf.media_set_id=bkpms.media_set_id
WHERE
(bkpms.media_set_id=@_msparam_0)',N'@_msparam_0 nvarchar(4000)',@_msparam_0=N'3'
So it's possible that your backup software is purging that table, eg by runningmsdb.dbo.sp_delete_database_backuphistory.
Or perhaps more likely, your backup software is adding data to the SQL Server backup history that prevents SSMS from pre-populating the backup dialog with your last TSQL backup location.
In any case, you don't need to manually take the bakcups through SSMS every day. You can just save a script of your backup commands (by hitting the Script button on the backup dialog) and run that. Or create a SQL agent job to run the script
or use a database maintence plan.

Getting SQL Server Express Running
I'm trying to get SQL Server Express running on my home computer that runs Window 7 Professional.
So far, I have downloaded and installed SQL Server Express. The Windows Start list shows Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.
I've seen several references to SQL Server Management Studio Express and am ready to download and install that. The download site says "You must install .NET Framework 2.0 and MSXML 6.0 Parser before you install SSMSE."
I already have Visual Studio 2010 Professional installed. Does that satisfy the .NET Framework 2.0 requirement? If not, do I need to download .NET Framework 2.0?
Regarding the MSXML Parser, I clicked on MSXML 6.0 Parser and was taken to a site headed "Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - February 2007." Text there said "... a collection of standalone install packages that provide additional value
for SQL Server 2005." My question, then, is should I download and install MSXML 6.0 Parser?
I'll appreciate any guidance.Hi, it sounds like you installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Express engine only. To get the client tools, SQL Server Management Studio, install SQLEXPRADV_X64_ENU.exe (or X86 if on a 32-bit box) from:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30438
This SQLEXPRADV package includes both the engine and client tools. Since you're already installed engine, just select the client tools feature in the feature selection dialog and you should be good to go. Once you install SSMS, launch it and
connect to your instance by using <machine name>\SQLEXPRESS where SQLEXPRESS is the default value used during setup for the instance name.

Error trying to install ICM 8.0 - "FAILED TO GET SQL SERVER VERSION."
Hello guys, i tried to install ICM 8.0 but when i click on Setup.exe appears this error:
"FAILED TO GET SQL SERVER VERSION. MAKE SURE SQL SERVER INSTALLED PROPERLLY
NO INSTANCE NAME FOUND.NO SCHEMA UPGRADES ATTEMPTED"
I try to check the SQL COnfiguration, about Named Pipes, but everything is allright. Someone knows what is it?
Thank you very much. You should be able to see the ICMSetup.log file somewhere - check TEMP. It seems to me that this is the first thing it does - tries to connect to the SQL database and ask for the version. Clearly it cannot. I assume you installed SQL OK, probably have the service running under a domain user created especially for the task, or the domain admin, and you are also logged in as the domain admin, and that SQL is running.
Check that log file for clues.

How to find sql server backup was taken under compression mode
Hello,
How to find SQL server backup was taken under compression mode ? I have disabled the Compress Mode backup setting but I want to make sure the backup is taken without compression.
Is there a script for that?
Thanks
JKI have disabled the Compress Mode backup
That is only a default setting, in backup command you can always overwrite it to a different value.

Having issues with getting SQL Server Express to start services and run.
Good afternoon everyone,
I have been working on a 2012 R2 server getting ready to move databases to new hardware. I had SQL Server Express 2008 R2 running on this server with no issues. I was handed another software package that ran SQL Express 2012 and had to for compatibility
reasons. I have had multiple versions run on Server 2012 before with no issues. This time, not so lucky. When the installer from the updated package put on SQL Express 2012 it completed with errors ( error log posted at the end of post) and
would not allow me to run software. I then tried the db that I had installed on 2008 R2 and it also gave the same error as the 2012 version. IN basic terms the required services attempted to start and shut back down again. I have received
Error 1068 about database handles and error %%945. I know this db has plenty of space and the permissions were added for the Admin account to access both db's. I then uninstalled both versions and tried again, with the same errors listed when
I tried to start the services. I am thinking that a clean install would fix the issue however I am not certain what files/folders/reg entries need to be deleted or modified. I have researched all the errors I can find, however I am very
new with SQL anything so I know I am missing something. I also do not have an "E:" drive on this server (not sure why it is going there). Input would be very welcome as I am not certain where to go from here.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi HMLunger,
Did you install the SQL Server instance successfully? If not, please help to post the summary and detail logs for analysis. By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
However, if you fail to start SQL Server Express service after successfully installing SQL Server,
you might have to change the paths of the files by running the following scripts from the command prompt. For more details, please review this similar
thread.
NET START MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS /f /T3608
SQLCMD -S .\SQLEXPRESS
ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
go
exit;
ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
NET STOP MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS
In addition, you can follow the steps in this KB article to uninstall SQL Server.

this is actually an SQL express edition and not a full SQL server.
Environment:
Databases will be detached, copied to from E:\SQL\MSSQL\Data\ to a shared location and then mount black database foles .MDF
and .LDF files to the SQL express and then restart the kiwi syslog applications.
why not powershell? well I've inherited this and machine is a 2003 server and we do not install PS on all machines except
if they are needed.
SQLServer Express comes with tools to backup the database. Post is SQLServer forum to learn how to set up and use SQLExpress tools.
SQLExpress has support in PowerShell for managing the server.
Here si on emethod posted by Microsoft that is useful. Methods using the scheduler and other tools are available.

SQL Server backup on disk from DB13 in 6.20
Hello,
is it possible to perform database backups on disk (remote and local) in transaction DB13? Is the Enterprise Manager the only way to perform backups on disks?
The only media type available in DB13 is 'Tape' and I can't change this option (maybe there is no option). SAP Library provides confusing information, as it states that bakcup on disk is possible in DB13, but also points to the documentation of MS SQL Server in order to achieve it.
We have WAS 6.20 in 4.7 ES 1.10 with MS SQL Server 2000.
Thank you.
Antonio Sánchez.I think there is something called as virtual devices in enterprise manager which can be configured as TAPE device.
This virtual TAPE could be a actual TAPE or a DISK.
Try configuring it and see if it is visible in DB13.
We had done this 2 years ago, don't remember it properly.
good luck.

Finding SQL Server licensing information for 2005 and above.
I can use SELECT serverproperty('LicenseType'), serverproperty('NumLicenses') on SQL Server 2000 but these server properties are no longer being returned in SQL Server 2005 and later. This information doesn't seem to be recorded in the registry for
SQL Server 2005 and later.
Is there an easy way to query or report licensing information for SQL Server 2005 onwards?
Thanks.Hello,
Since SQL Server Version 2005 you have all license Information only on paper; so you have to lookup your papers to get the Information.
