Problem: VSS error with 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool' installed

When 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool' is installed, shadow copies cannot be enable and backups fail.  When attempting to enable shadow copies, we get a "volsnap" error:  "The shadow copies of volume X were aborted because
of a failed free space computation".  After uninstalling the "Tool", VSS works.  Reinstalling "Tool" causes the problem to return.
While the error suggests a space issue, there is plenty of space on the server's two volumes.  Additionally, another 100GB volume was added and VSS storage was allocated to it; still received the error.
Issue seems to point to 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool'.
Environment:  Hyper-V guest:  "Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard" with "SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard".  Using "Azure Storage" for SQL backups.
Suggestions?

Hello,
Yes, we have a confirmed interference between the tool and the VSS Framework. This was identified very recently and is under investigation by the product group. Since the issue is within the filter driver shipped by the tool, that unfortunately means that
you currently need to choose between the tool and a working VSS Framework. If the latter is more important, then uninstall the tool (that will require a restart).
We apolologize for the inconvenience. I'm going to try to get the home page of the tool updated to avoid other situations like yours. Hopefully we should see a new version of the tool soon.
As a side note, recent versions of SQL Server can directly use Azure Storage as backup target, see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj919148(v=sql.110).aspx.

  • Microsoft SQL Server Express LocalDB / Windows Azure Powershell install fail - SQL writer failed to start

I'm trying to install Windows Azure PowerShell on my Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise laptop. As a prerequisite, it needs to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, I but keep receiving an error:
Service 'SQL Server VSS Writer' (SQLWriter) failed to start. Verify that you have

The service that it tries to use by default is the Local Service. I verified that it has log on as a service privileges and even did a restart. Same error.

    Hi ,
According to your description, when you install SQL Server 2012 Local DB , it encounter the error about SQLWriter. We need to verify if you invoke SQLLOcalDB.msi directly, and check
MSSQL service is running and other service’s status. In addition, you can go to event viewer and check the error logs for analysis.
There is a similar issue about Service SQL Server VSS Writer and troubleshooting SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, you can review the following article.

I stop SQLEXPRESS instance in one of the above tools but the others become unaware of the latest changes except
    Task Manager.
For example when I stop SQL EXPRESS from within SQL Server Congiguration Manager
it still seems working in Windows Administration Tools, Manage Computer windows.
What is the reason for this?

    Hi,
Aprat from SQL Server configuration manager all other are windows tool and should not be used to manage SQL Server in anyway. Although I cannot completely understand list of tools you mentioned

One potential solutions is to use a custom SQL server JDBC driver instead of going through the ODBC bridge. This will minimize dependencies and should also improved performance. Hope this helps.

  • Having problems connecting Coldfusion10 with sql server express 2012

    Hi,
I am having problems setting up a datasource for a local sql express 2012 server. Its running as the default instance. Connections are working with ODBC and client told just not Coldfusion.
When I try to set up a connection using the sql driver I get this error:
Connection verification failed for data source: Leaf

When I try a Socket connection with an ODBC connection I setup in windows I get this error:
Connection verification failed for data source: LeafDB
java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SequeLink JDBC Driver]Internal network error, connection closed.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Hi Rossco199,
The issue is likely caused by you not having yet assigned port 1433 in SQL Express itself. Follow the procedure described on the following page, and you should solve the problem: http://www.tensixconsulting.com/2012/02/sqlserverexception-the-tcpip-connection-to-the-hos t-port-1433-has-failed/
In particular, remember to assign port 1433 to 127.0.0.1 and to IPAll. Also set 'Active' and 'Enabled' to 'Yes' for the IP 127.0.0.1. While you're at it, if 'Named Pipes' is disabled, you should right-click on it and select 'enable'. Afterwards, restart the Windows service 'SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS)'.
It is advisable to allow ColdFusion server authentication. However, the SQL Express server is configured by default to allow only Windows authentication. This conflict may lead to errors.
Should you then encounter the dreaded Error 233: "No process is on the other end of the pipe", proceed as follows. Open the tool Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Right-click on the name of your database server, then on Properties. In the user interface that opens, click on Security. Select the combined 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode'. Restart the service 'SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS)'.

  • Versioning Error with SQL Server JDBC Driver

    Hi,
I wrote a simple class for inserting rows into a database. The database is SQL Server 2000, and I am using weblogic's mssqlserver4 driver. The class works fine, but when I try to export the class as a remote object (using Sun's RMI implementation, not Weblogic RMI), I get the following error:
Exception in thread "main" weblogic.common.internal.VersioningError: No WebLogic packages defined in CLASSPATH at weblogic.common.internal.VersionInfo.<init>(VersionInfo.java:35) at weblogic.version.<clinit>(version.java:18)
    at weblogic.jdbc.common.internal.FileProxy.initFileHandles(FileProxy.java:30) at weblogic.jdbc.mssqlserver4.BaseConnection.prepareConnection(BaseConnection.java:215)
    at weblogic.jdbc.mssqlserver4.Driver.newConnection(Driver.java:34) at weblogic.jdbc.mssqlserver4.ConnectDriver.connect(ConnectDriver.java:151) at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:512) at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:171)
Can anyone tell me why this happens? What is difference between using the driver standalone and using it with RMI? Does it have anything to do with the fact that I'm using Javasoft RMI and not Weblogic RMI? I'm pretty sure I have the classpaths set up correctly.
    Thanks,
    Bo

You seem to have done everything correctly and diligently. I would ask that you open
    an official support case.

  • Checkin error with sql server as backend database

    Hello,
I get regulary the following error messages (attached as screenshot) when I'm try to checkin my current model.
The message states, that my database is in single user mode, but this isn't the case. I checked the many times.
My repository database is a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP3 64 Bit Enterprise Edition. Are there any known issues with this database?
With PowerDesigner 16.1 I didn't have such issues.
    kind regards
    Christian

    Hi Christian,
The error message is not referring to your database.
Within PowerDesigner, PD, some 'Unexpected Exceptions' are not really an issue (a true exception).
Here is an explanation for the error you are encountering:
PD has found that something potentially wrong happened with an action selection in the merge dialog. A single user has been the only one to work on the model, but the actions were not all selected by default (which is unexpected).
So PD decided by itself to select all the actions anyway.
The PD developers created this dialog to be a warning about this condition in order for it to be analyzed further if required.
Using the Comparison Legend from the Merge window:
[-+] object present only in model in the left pane (deletion for the merge dialog)
The action in question is now selected:
    [-+]<Trigger> CompoundDeleteTrigger _adm_prepare_load
If you would like to pursue this further, a copy of the local model and a copy of the model already in the repository would be needed for review.
    Regards,
    Anthony

My Web XML specifies the JDBC resource as follows:
    <resource-ref>
         <description>Clearinghouse DB Connectio</description>
         <res-ref-name>jdbc/indemand</res-ref-name>
         <res-type>com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource</res-type>
         <res-auth>Container</res-auth>
    </resource-ref>
When I cause a database access within my application, I get the following horrifying result. It's the "Error Establishing Socket" error that's worrying me, as I'm using the native Microsoft SQL Server Drivers. The ones in my lib directory are msutil.jar, msutil.jar, and mssqlserver.jar
    Any thoughts?

    You can check two things
    1. Whether the ports to the database server are blocked by a fire wall.
    2. And more simpler and most probably the case here, you can try to findout if you can see the database server from the webserver. i.e. ping the database server from a console in the webserver.

  • JDBC Connection Error with Sql Server 2005

    Hi
I am trying to connect the Sql Server 2005 thru jdbc but I am getting the following error.
SQLException: The TCP/IP connection to the host usselect.com/x-logs, port 1433 has failed. Error: usselect.com/x-logs. Please verify the connection properties and check that a SQL Server instance is running on the host and accepting TCP/IP connections at the port, and that no firewall is blocking TCP connections to the port.
    I am using sqljdbc4.jar (driver)
    import java.sql.Connection; import java.sql.DatabaseMetaData; import java.sql.DriverManager; import java.sql.SQLException; public class testdb {     public static void main(String s[]){         String userid="xxxx", password = "xxxxx";         String url = "jdbc:sqlserver://usselect.com/x-logs:1433";         Connection con = null;         try {             Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver");         }catch(java.lang.ClassNotFoundException e) {             System.err.print("ClassNotFoundException: ");             System.err.println(e.getMessage());         }         try {             con = DriverManager.getConnection(url,userid,password);         } catch(SQLException ex) {             System.err.println("SQLException: " + ex.getMessage());         }         if(con!= null){             System.out.println("Got Connection."+con);         }else{             System.out.println("Could not Get Connection");         }     } }
    Please advise.

By using Jdbc thin driver are we able to connect to mssql 2005 through windows authentication or not? "thin driver" refers to a specific Oracle driver.
Far as I know both the current (not older) MS driver supports windows auth. Certianly the jTDS driver does.
If yes what is the procedure. One starts by reading the docs. If necessary then one googles.

  • Cannot connect to SERVER. Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\user'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error 18456) - SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2

I've seen multiple blogs and forums with similar problems and SQL 2012 or 2008. But no solutions that work for me.
I have installed SQL Server in mixed mode (SQL and Windows authentication). I can create new Login accounts in either mode. However, I cannot get an AD security group Login account to work. I am trying to add group 'DOMAIN\Domain Admins' or 'SERVER\Administrators'
as a Login so that any of the domain's administrator accounts can open SQL Server Management Studio and act as an 'sa' account on this server.
I have deleted the SQL account 'DOMAIN\Domain Admins'.
    I have restarted SQL.
I have restarted the Win2K8r2 server.
I have launched SSMS as Administrator from the desktop of SERVER.
I have launched SSMS as another user (and used 'DOMAIN\user' to lauch it) from the desktop of SERVER.
I can create a login account named 'DOMAIN\user' (who happens to be a member of the 'DOMAIN\Domain Admins' group) and give this account 'sa' security, and when I do that, this account works as expected...
How do I add a security group as a Login account and give all members of that group the ability to be an 'sa' account?

    Hi geoperkins,
Are you getting the following error message?
    Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11
Login failed for user <Domain\user>. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error.
If that is the case, the issue could be due to that the Windows login has no profile or that permissions could not be checked due to UAC. Please disable UAC firstly and check if it is successful to log in SQL Server.
Another reason could be that the domain controller could not be reached. You may need to resort to re-creating the login. Create a new group in AD, add users to the new group, then add the group to the local admin group and create login for the group in SQL
    Server.
There is a connect item describing similar issue for your reference.

  • JDBC Error with SQL Server

I created another post asking about this but cannot find it.
I had a perfiectly good piece of JDBC code working in a freestanding program that could retrieve a result of any size without issue. However, when I ran the same code from a servlet in Tomcat, this error was thrown:
java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]IO Error creating temp file: null
            at com.microsoft.jdbc.base.BaseExceptions.createException(BaseExceptions.java:45)

at com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.tds.TDSRPCRequest.submitRequest(TDSRPCRequest.java:191)The fix has to do with the tmpdir variable in Tomcat 5. If the $CATALINA_HOME/temp is missing, the File.createTempFile() method blows up.
Hope the 5 hours I blew finding it helps you.
