PPC G5 Quad Core 2.5 Booting OS problem ?? tech needed

I have a G5 Quad late October release that seems to have a corrupted registry. yup thats what I said . It started with a Kernal panic on a wmv video , windows media no less, that required a Hard shut down but then a "Boot Stop" and Hard shut down alarm when I tried to re-boot and every time I tried to boot there after. I checked for coolant leaks, checked / reseated the CPU.s . Cleaned and reseated the Vid card and memory sticks, nothing. So i got ASD 2.6.3 It booted? so I ran 10 loops of full diognostic But No errors, so I re calibrated the CPU's all complete. But I still got a "Boot Stop" with the top red LED on , Tried safe boot , no luck, Then I pulled the drive and I got the Mac folder? , Tried booting from a Tiger DVD same "Boot Stop" so I tried option booting and the OS selection came up no problem and could detect OS's and even swap out DVD's. So I tried booting in verbose with bothe a mounted drive OS and the tiger DVD and got the boot stop. Verbose log said there was " A driver releasing a(n) _IOServiceJob has corrupted the registry\n" @/SourceCache /xnu/xnu-1228.15.4/libkern/c++/OSObject.cpp:241 . Granted there is alot more of kernal panic and back tracing but the @/SourceCache..... keeps coming up ever verbose boot causing kernal panics. Ive tried the pmu reset , Pram reset. booting with memory out , vid out everything. But all ASD tests say she's fine but I just cant seem to boot an OS!!! Could my ROM have been corrupted or some bad "Cache" that is saved and used during the boot cycle and if so how do I clean it out? HELP oh BTW the panic seem to come after "DART" is enabled what ever the blazes that is.

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
-Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
-Trying alternate video card
-resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

Apple Mac Pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core

Hey guys,
Ive got a real brain teaser. I have a apple mac pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core that wont boot.
The leds on the memory test good its all tested in another mac and working well.
The 9 leds are reading as follows 2nd led lit yellow. Led 9,8,7 Green- which from my research is good.
Ive also reset the cmos battery and vram, nothing.
Pulled the memory and video card and re-seated them also nothing.
The last thing i tryed was shut the computer down sit for 30 seconds then held alt and got the install mac os screen not a hard drive option.
Which leads me to think its not seeing the hard drive?
Any suggestions?

The chime is generated in software when the first portion of the power-on self test has passed.Your Mac is working and has enough working RAM memory to start up.
You still may have problems with drives, the software on those drives, or your graphics card.
apple logo comes up
The dark gray Apple is loaded by the ROM boot loader in the first blob of software (before the file system is initialized). Its presence indicates your Mac can get some stuff off a Hard Drive, and seeing it indicates your graphic card can display something in a primitive way.
with spinning gear and just sits there for hours
It is stuck booting up something. Verbose Mode (hold Command-V at startup) will show you the parade of messages. The last five will tell you what happened.

Macbook pro, dual core or quad core?

Hey guys Im getting an early college present and was wondering which Macbook I should look at. This will be my one and only computer while im in college. No photo editing or anything like that, maybe some video editing but it will be almost none. Will be used to surf the web and write documents. My question is should i get the dual core or quad core processor? Will it really matter for what i want it for? One thing I absolutely hate is lag! So the faster of the two the better.

Well, actually, only one guy said the quad core would be faster, but it is not clear why they said that. You said you were only going to use it "to surf the web and write documents." Well, guess what. You don't need a quad-core for that. You don't need a dual-core for that. I've surfed the web and written documents on my old single-core iPhone. So unless there are more things you want to do that you haven't mentioned, there is just about no way it's worth paying for quad-core or a 2.6GHz processor if all you are going to do is surf the web and write documents.
The quad-core is going to speed up operations that specifically benefit from parallel processing, like intensive editing of photo/audio/video, or bulk encoding of audio and video, or specific math apps, stuff like that. And most Mac users would not benefit from choosing the 2.6GHz over the 2.3GHz because the performance of so many common uses depends not only on the CPU speed, but actually on the overall balance of CPU, RAM, and disc. In other words, if you really have a legitimate application for 2.6GHz it usually means you must also install a great deal more RAM and also an SSD to avoid creating a bottleneck that holds back the CPU. But then you would have a machine that is massively overpowered and overpriced for surfing the web and writing documents.
You could surf the web and write documents quite effectively on the least expensive MacBook that Apple sells. But since you do want to keep it throughout all of college, it is a good idea to buy something higher than the bottom of the line. For a Mac for very basic uses that should last four years, I would suggest:
13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB SSD storage and 8GB RAM
13-inch MacBook Pro with 500GB HD storage and 8GB RAM
13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display with 256GB SSD storage and 8GB RAM
(You didn't mention what your budget is)
I suggested 13-inch because it's more portable than the 15-inch but more comfortable for 4 years than an 11-inch. I chose storage sizes that would be appropriate since you said you would do some video. And I chose 8GB RAM because 4GB may not be enough for 4 years, and also because insufficient RAM is often a bigger cause of lag than CPU or disk speed.
If you have a limited amount of money, from this point on you'll need to justify why you would want a bigger screen, a faster CPU, or more cores given the two tasks you said you'd be doing most of the time. Because again, if you didn't actually need a Mac, you could write documents and surf the web on an iPad with the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover and be done for $600.

ITunes stutters - go to dual or quad core?

Hi all,
I'm looking for somebody who knows about iTunes and also about hardware...
The issue I've been having for more than a year now is that due to my large library (14,000+ songs) and complex and extensive use of smart playlists, iTunes has to 'think' too much whenever a new song starts playing. Usually this causes iTunes to just freeze for 10 to 20 seconds while it updates all the playlists and the music keeps playing, but sometimes it also causes the music to stutter. I haven't been able to determine which situations cause the stuttering in particular, but suffice it to say that doing heavy photo editing in Adobe Lightroom and playing music with iTunes is usually not all that pleasant.
Now I've been wondering whether a dual or quad core processor would solve this problem. Besides the obvious extra speed, am I right in saying that the problem should largely go away because iTunes and Lightroom would be using different processors? Is the problem only with processor speed or does RAM has an influence too?)
Does anybody have some light to shed on this problem?

I wasn't aware that I was at the bare minimum. The Athlon64 3800+ is a 2.4GHz single-core. System requirements for iTunes are 500MHz and for lightroom a Pentium 4-class processor (say 1.5GHz). Granted, I'm using them both at the same time and especially iTunes at more extreme than usual settings. I'm using Windows XP Home (32-bit) btw...
So, I guess a dual core or quad core it'll have to be then... Too bad it's gonna cost me around €350 though.
If anybody still has some ideas about solving the stuttering software-wise, then I'm all ears.

hi i bought the msi 975x platinum but im not to sure if it supports quad core i read on the site it did but on other sites it says it isnt im so confused with it all if this mother board dosent support quad core can some one tell me one that is quad core compatible and preferbly out the box compatible im too scared to install a new bios on it i be too scared il mess it up .

Mac pro 2.66 Quad Core - boot drive mirrored, replace?

All,
I have a Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core system.
I got all 'sexy' when I set it up - loaded four 1-TB drives in the 4 bays, Mirrored the boot set, also mirrored the secondary set for data.
I am getting ready to have these guys filled up (I do lots of video, pics, etc), and am thinking about 'growing' the drives to 2TB or even 3TB disks (mirrored of course, I'm paranoid).
So I am thinking about the 'how' of moving my data to the larger drive, getting things set up. I have not had any of the drives fail, so I haven't needed to do a swap out yet.
Can I simply take out one of the mirrored boot drives, put in a larger drive, and it will then rebuild the mirror?
or if anyone has some info they can point me to, I'd appreciate it.

You cannot just add a larger drive and grow your RAID Volume size. You need to create an empty larger RAID Volume and COPY the data to the larger Volume, e.g., from your Backups.
Mirrored RAID is NOT Backup. It merely extends the time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a data disaster. RAID gives you no protection from human error, crazy software or file problems that happen "just because". You still need backup.
One of the best ways to get increased performance from a computer with the ability to support multiple Internal drives is to keep only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including paging/swap on the Boot Drive, and move everything else off. This dramatically reduces competition for the Boot Drive and everything speeds up. A Velociraptor is a little faster, and an SSD is incrementally faster still.
If that is all that is on the Boot Drive, you do not need to RAID it, since it can be reproduced from DVDs or downloads in short order. All your User files and Preferences are on other drives..
Implementing this would suggest a single small fast Boot Drive, typically with an offline clone as Backup for emergencies, and forget about RAID-ing the Boot Drive.

You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad. Having a bootable clone is a must.

If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.

How do I transfer contents of hard drive on PPC iMac G4 to a new quad-core Intel Core i5

         Although my PPC iMac G4 still works OK, I am beginning to realise the time has probably come to get a current model in order to keep up with all the advances that have happened since I bought it about 8 years ago: I will probably get the new quad-core Intel Core i5.
         As this will only be my second computer, I am wondering how I can transfer all the stuff on my hard drive onto a new computer and how easy it will be,given the apparently outdated connections on my G4 like USB 1,and possibly other things I don't know about.I am running 10.4.11.
          Any tips gratefully received.

As Allen indicates, Setup Assistant appears automatically, since you do have firewire, the transfer should be speedy, depending on how much data are on the G4. The firewire on your G4 is FW400, your new Mac has FW800, but you can get an inexensive adaptor that will allow the connection, since the ports are different.
You don't need an external now, but I strongly advise getting one, with a drive as large or larger than your new Mac, you should clone/back up frequently, I use SuperDuper! which will allow automatic backups.

My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

Bay 1 or bay 2 when installing a 120gig SSD Boot drive with 10.8 into a MacPro 3.2Ghz Quad core ?

Im about to install a 120gig SSD into a MacPro 3.2Ghz Quad core. It shipped with a 1TB Hitachi Ultrastar HDD Sata III, that runs 10.7 and is the boot disk running form bay #1. I plan to run 10.8 on the new SSD and use that as the boot disk.
Should I swap over the Hitachi HDD and SSD so that new SSD boot drive is in bay #1 ? If so am I correct that it would be okay to download and install Mountain Lion on the SSD using bay #2 first and then swap them over once installed ?

So far Im quite happy with 10.7.3 and the machine seems very stable
Bay 1 - 1TB HDD running OS 10.7.3 (so can boot from this HDD disk if required to should the SSD fail (if or when ). This is disk already running 10.7.3 as boot disk now.
Bay 3 & 4 - On horizon... x2 1TB Western Digital Black Caviar HDD set up with RAID '0' stripe. Not sure on whether to use a RAID 0 or not yet.... Might just go with one 2TB drive... TBC.
BACKUP: 3tb external HDD or Synology DS411j NAS drive
So from what I understand once I've installed the OS on to the new SSD along with any apps, use Carbon Copy Cloner to make an fresh image before I use the system... is that correct ???

I have a refurbished HP Pavilion p6710f desktop, with an AMD Quad-Core processor. About 4 weeks aog I reformated the HD and reinstalled Windows 7 Prof and the rest o my software and it ran fine for about 2 weeks then it started taking 5 to 10 minutes to boot up in morning or to restart. I had downloaded a couple of things and I uninstalled them and it did better, but gradually over the last week it has started taking 10 to 15 minutes to boot up or restart. With either it takes a few seconds to get the HP stuff in the middle of the monitor, then in a few seconds it loads the choices (Function keys for setup, recover, etc.) then it takes 4 to five minutes to show "windows loading" the 3 to 4 minutes to show the 4-colored windows logo and then up to 5 minutes to load my icons and be ready to run--once all this is done everything runs fine until I need to restart, and then it is 10 to 15 minutes again to get up and running.
When I redid everything about 4 weeks ago I made an image on an external 1 Tb HD that is always connected thru a UBB Port and this morning I recovered and It reinstalled it, but it did not help.
Don't think it is the BIOS battery as it doesn't lose time.

Seems to me that your hard drive is gonna fail soon, trying running hard drive diagnostics from the BIOS.

New I7 quad-core takes longer to boot up than old imac?

Just got my new I7 quad-core last night. (Looks gorgeous, by the way.) Transferred everything over from my old 24" 2.33GHz iMac.... all is well, only had one app hiccup so far (had to reinstall iTunes for some reason).
Anyway, did a side-by-side startup this morning, and the old iMac basically kicked the new one's butt - it started up about 50% faster.
Does this seem right? Is there a reason the new iMac, running basically the same exact system with same apps, preferences, etc, would take longer to boot up?

i think the new one was rebooting from a bootable backup i had created. changed that in startup disc settings... seems faster rebooting now.
and i transferred everything over via migration assistant (allowed it to move everything upon my first startup when it asked if i wanted to transfer data from another mac)....

I've only had my new iMac for a week and today when I rebooted I got a gray circle with a line through it. I've already done the command-r and used Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions... over and over. As a last resort I even reinstalled Mountain Lion with the OS X Internet Recover. No such luck. After it still booted with the gray circle with a line through it.
I was able to use "Scan Image for Restore" to see that all my files are on the hard drive.
What should I do?

Unfortunately, I also previously tried booting with the Shift key. Nothing. It acted like I wasn't even pressing the Shift key. I tried it multiple times. Sorry, I forgot to say that in my initial post.
I just tried the Option key and selected Macintosh HD (the only option). I still got the gray circle with the line though it.
I've already spent at least 30-40 hours installing all my software and transferring over all my pics and music. I can't "erase the disk and install OS X again".

So how much faster/better/wonderful is the i7 vs the (ancient) G5?

It should be about 4 times faster, and if you get the SSD, it will be really faster. I got the 3.4Ghz i& with SSD and it is amazing.
