PPC to x86

We are currently investigating the possibility of moving from POWER architecture to IA64.
Currently our Oracle eBiz and Db resides on IBM p series hardware.
Has anyone out there made this transition?
Would appreciate ANY comments - especially as far as comparisons in hardware performance between the 2 architectures.
Would like to get some handle on what to expect as far as sizing configurations before I'm inundated with sales calls from the vendors...

Michael Bybee,
Are you reporting that the SAPgui for Java 6.30 Rev 8 for the Macintosh runs on Intel-based Macintoshes? If so, do you happen to know if SAPgui for Java 6.30 Rev 12 also runs on Intel-based Macintoshes?
Do you happen to know why/how this works? Is it that the Java Virtual Machine used by SAPgui for Java 6.30 (JVM 1.3.1_09-82 on my PowerPC Mac) was not ported to the Intel architecture and therefore runs under Rosetta, and therefore Rosetta support for JNI libraries is available?

  • X86 guest virtualization on XServe G5 PowerPC

    All
I have a potential client where we are investigating taking their current PowerPC-based XServe G5 cluster (huge cluster) and virtualizing a bunch of x86 machines (Windows, Linux, etc) running on this cluster. If this was an Intel-based cluster it would be relatively easy I would assume, but this is PowerPC architecture.
Does Apple support bare-metal or OS-level virtualization of x86 machines on a PowerPC G5 Xserve?
If this works, what products can be used?
Anyone done this before? Tales from the field?
    Thanks!

There is NO VM program that will allow you to run x86 code on PPC hardware. All code would need translation before it could even run in emulation mode. Virtual PC is the only program that did this on any kind of real scale and it was bought by Microsoft, poorly supported and eventually left for dead many OS versions ago. (I think it exists now as a way of running a different PC environment under Windows eg XP under Windows 7.) Even if you did find some way to cobble this together and get it working I doubt the performance would be even remotely acceptable - a 1 GHz PPC emulating x86 code would probably get you the equivalent of a several hundred Mhz 486 chip performance. And I have to think that the start-up time the maintenance and debugging work would be prohibitive. Many man-hours to (perhaps) get the equivalent of early-90s personal computer seems like a non-starter.
+There is Boot Camp which will let your Intel-based Mac (not sure about XServe...?)+
Last I knew the Xserve was explicitly exempted from Boot Camp support and I doubt it's changed. And, of course, Boot Camp applies only to intel chips not PPC.

  • I tried "Upgrading" 10.6.8 Server to 10.8 Server. And failed.

No question here, just a report for others to read.
So far I have always succesfully upgraded OS X Server. I started with 10.3 server and (except the PPC to x86) I always 'upgraded' not 'migrated'. But this time, my simple server (AFP (with PHD), DNS, Firewall (ipfw), Mail with virtual domains, Web with realms) was too much for the upgrade process. Things I ran into:
The upgrade process found out of date information (e.g. network settings that had been deleted from System Preferences) which it promoted to reality again.
    Mount points (AFP) upgraded properly
DNS was upgraded properly. Funny thing, DNS even ran after the 10.6.8 Server had been upgraded to 10.8 Client.
Upgrading postfix did not work. I got a strange mix of settings in /etc/postfix nd /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix which I was able to merge. But I never got amavisd and clamav to work. The refused to launch and I could not find the reason.
I never got around to migrating web, Firewall, testing PHD.
So I returned to my backup and am now back to 10.6.8 Server. Next attempt: building a clean 10.8 Server, rebuilding DNS and AFP by hand and importing Users, Groups, Machines, Machine Groups via Workspace Manager (which luckily still exists), adding Firewall (ipfw). I dread Web because I have a couple of virtual domains, webdav Realms and such.

You might give a shout out on the OS X Server forum.

  • Is Intel better than Power PC?

    Hi
Is Intel better than Power PC?
The reason I ask this is that Iv been transferring data from my old 350 G4 to my new Mac Book Via Fire wire (G4 in target mode) and Iv had some crashes with the Finder. This pretty much never happened with my old Mac. Force quitting does not save me like it use to if an app crashed. It just goes into a spin and stays there, thinking. Reminds me of Windows XP.
    Any Ideas. Thoughts. Etc.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1G Ram

    Daimon,
I would say it's a subjective answer based on use. Be glad that you have a machine that supports target mode. My B&W is a nightmare for transfers. The only irritating crashes I've had are the same as with any of my machines (Safari), which is probably due to a plugin.
I have had the experience of force quitting not quitting an application. A kill -9 doing the same thing. It looks like force quitting does quit the problem applications (processor usage drops back down), but they stay active in the dock. A restart functioned normally for me and that went away. The only applications this happens with were popcorn 2 and toast 7.1. Both of those are PPC apps that just made the intel transition and basically device drivers..so I would almost expect them to have been problematic. Everything else has been basically fine.
As to what's better. Security wise, there might be some concern about the Out-of-order execution distribution system of the PPC vs x86. PPC could be considered slightly more secure as it is difficult to gain data from the stack w/o being able to accurately predict the position. However, this is trivial first and is probably remedied a lot by the dual core setup....and it requires a level of access that Mac OS X doesn't just give up to anyone. When you get to performance...to me it's night and day.
I like to put a lot of my video content on my machine in a highly compressed state. It makes it convenient to watch movies or a series and you don't need to have a loud optical drive spinning around. If I was to use something like Handbrake or Instant Handbrake: http://handbrake.m0k.org/ to encode to h.264 on a G5 it would take long enough that I would have to go do something else. On the dual core chips it's almost unbelievable. It's not that the 950 chipset does hardware h.264 encoding (I know some ATI 1xxx cards have this capability, but the only intel data http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/ I've seen indicate MPEG-2 playback is the highest video optimization ), it's that SSE(1,2,3) on a dual core processor with an application designed for multiple cores/processors (not the same physically, but application wise it's close enough), flies. We're talking something going from 7 fps to 48 fps (better than real time).
There is definitely a Wow factor to these machines. Maybe you just need to try something like that to find it.
I think the instability is due to transitional software. Another thing you may want to consider is that many included applications and parts of Mac OS X aren't pushing the chips anywhere near the limit. Many things just use 100 of 200% . Wait a while and more things will be introduced or updated that make your new machine fly.
I haven't had a finder crash that I recall. Nor a beach ball I couldn't get out of. If it is just limited to the dock (as it appears to be for me), then it's a minor issue. There have been comments about the Rosetta process translated quitting (IIRC), and I will add that twice I have experienced a situation where PPC apps bounced w/o launching. A restart fixed that.
Windows isn't that bad. Even on a core duo (not a centrino duo Tiger is still easier to stabilize/ 'more stable'.
I think a lot of the issues you are having are just growing pains and transfer of apps or files that, while they may have been updated to 'universal binary', aren't designed for the chips in these machines from the ground up.
Give it some time and try some of the things that make these machines better, because subjectively...I think these machines are better.
Another idea...running PPC apps takes a LOT of memory for speed (otherwise you're paging like a maniac) so either up your machines memory or run one PPC app at a time.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Why can't people view my email attachments?

    Hi,
I regularly send out emails using Mail with JPEG attachments but many people cannot see them. They simply get the following type of code/jargon.
What is going on and what is the solution?
    = --Apple-Mail-6--884313368 Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Id: <64130CCA-BD61-4753-B324-DA10E1BF5B64@local> Content-Type: image/jpeg; x-mac-type=4A504547; x-unix-mode=0644; x-mac-creator=4D4B4259; name=ContactSheet-NWS001.jpg Content-Disposition: inline; filename=ContactSheet-NWS001.jpg /9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQEAtwC3AAD/2wBDAAQDAwMDAwQDAwQFBAMEBQcFBAQFBwgGBgcGBggKCAgI CAgICggKCgsKCggNDQ4ODQ0SEhISEhQUFBQUFBQUFBT/2wBDAQUFBQgHCA8KCg8SDwwPEhYVFRUV FhYUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBT/wAARCAeYBVgDAREA AhEBAxEB/8QAHQABAAEFAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUCAwQGBwgBCf/EAHwQAAEDAwMCAwQFBQkHCg8A IwECAwQABREGEiEHMRMiQQgUUWEVIzJxg.... etc.
    PowerMac G5 2.0Ghz DP / iBook G3 800Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I cannot completely interpret that jargon but i do recognize it... you can see that it's basically saying the following file is a jpg... but the software that is receiving it has not interpreted it as a file so instead has just displayed it as text.
This seems to happen both ways around (with files from pc's too) I'm no expert on the subject but i have a feeling it's to do with the different character sets that the two OS use (one of the many fundamental differences like big endian little endian with PPC and X86) although that is not necessarily an OS specific thing.
Anyway, the actual content (in the jpg format is an OS independent format, however i think the header of the file is subject to character set types...This is also a problem on servers with different character sets... you may have tried to download a dmg but ended up with a browser page full of code. This can be resolved by right clicking and selecting "save as". I find that some of the time this can rescue files sent to me by windows users. (you may have to add the appropriate extension yourself)
If the jargon is received by the user when clicking the link then ask them to right click and use "save as" and make sure the file name uses the .jpg extension.
If they still can't open them then archive (zip) your files before you send them, this will protect them from any servers they pass through with different character sets and i think zip will make sure it extracts it regardless of the character set. (this is also a good method for retaining res forks of older mac files from server file-systems that do not support them).
    Hope that solves your problem.
    Thomas,

  • Trying to make Universal Tiger setup

I have some old PowerBook G4 Titaniums I'm trying to setup to lan old games on.
I was running Leopard on them, but it won't let me use OpenGL on the 400 and 500Mhz ones, even if I install the Rage128 kexts from Tiger.
I want to switch those ones to Tiger so I can use OpenGL, but, the PowerPC version of Tiger doesn't have IO80211Family.kext, which I need to support my Broadcom 4328 and 4329 Wifi cards.
If I try to copy the IO80211Family.kext from Intel Tiger to PPC, it won't run, claiming it has some sort of superclass error.
So, I made 3 partitions on an external drive:
    1. Tiger PPC
    2. Tiger Intel
    3. Tiger Universal
Installed Tiger PPC and Tiger Intel and updated both 10.4.11, PPC and Intel respectively. Then I imaged PPC onto the Universal partition. Next I imaged the Intel one over that.
Booted it up on my 800Mhz Titanium and it worked! If I run software update, it gets Intel updates now, but it all seems to work, including the Wifi card.
Then I tried it on my 500 and 400s, and it gets stuck at the loginwindow almost everytime. Maybe one boot out of 10 it will load to the desktop and work fine, including the Wifi card, but most of the time I just get a blue or gray screen, and in verbose mode it sometimes has a line about loginwindow.app on a black screen.
I also tested OpenGL on the 500 and it isn't working, even though the Rage128 kext is loaded.
My next step is going to be putting Intel kexts into the PPC Tiger install one by one and seeing if I get anywhere with that, but I thought I would see if anyone had any tips. If I could get OpenGL on the Rage128 on Leopard, then I'd like that the most.

Thanks for the response tanner1294, but it's bugging me for a few reasons.
One, 10.4 Server includes Rage 128 drivers because it's designed to be able to run on many G3's and G4's which came with Rage 128s. I'm willing to bet that if I wanted to, I could run 10.4 PPC (non Universal) server on my Rage128 PowerBooks just fine. I think the issue is an incompatibility with the universal version of one of the PCI bus drivers, and the Rage128 Mobility, although I have yet to test it on a desktop with a Rage128. Again, my Radeon 7500 PowerBook runs both my experimental 10.4 Universal Client setup, and 10.4 Server Universal just fine. It may be worth noting that the Rage128 kexts only have PPC executables in them, while the Radeon ones have both PPC and x86, which is true on Universal Server as well.
Two, Rage128s most certainly do support OpenGL, how else would I be able to play Quake3 on it? It just doesn't work in Leopard because the 10.4 drivers aren't completely compatible with 10.5 (10.5 doesn't have it's own Rage128 drivers), and it doesn't work in any Universal version of 10.4 for basically the same reason. But they run OpenGL just fine in Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X up to 10.4.11 for PPC. Surprisingly well actually.
Three, Airport cards suck. You acknowledge that they're slow, but they're also way overpriced for what they are, can't connect using some modern encryption types, and often fail. Not only that, but when I copy files using the WPC600N cards, it's noticeably faster than the 100 baseT in the Rage128 'Books (the Radeon ones of course having gigabit).
Anyway, I'm just running 10.4.11 PPC on the 500 and 400 now, and I ordered a WPC54gs. With the WPC54gs you don't have to worry about which version you get like you do with the WPC54g, since they all have broadcom chips. They also have speedboast, and most people sell them for about the same price. It should also work in Mac OS X 10.2.8, which I run on my 233 Wallstreet, which, BTW also runs OpenGL on it's Rage II video.

  • Login Window's Name & Password dimmed & freezed when trying to log in...

This problem keeps cropping up quite frequently, especially if I logged out of a OD account and immediately logging into another OD account: the name and password entered will dim and the Login Window will just freeze. There is no problem for local accounts and I still can SSH into this "frozen" computer and reboot the system. It occurs on all my Mac computers running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) whether it is PPC or x86.
Looking at that "frozen" computer log, a successful loggin in will include these lines in system.log:

    Does anyone has a solution?

What is the server (model & specs) & what are the clients ?
Fast clients with a slow server can be one problem, due to how fast OS X boots.
    See
Past that, since you can ssh into a frozen client machine, set this up in advance on a couple workstations.
On the client set AFP debugging via, for example:
    sudo defaults write -g com.apple.AppleShareClientCore -dict-add afpdebugsyslog -int 1
    sudo defaults write -g com.apple.AppleShareClientCore -dict-add afpdebuglevel -int 6
afpdebugsyslog = 1 (turns on debugging)
    afpdebuglevel = <1-8>
Then, add the following line to /etc/syslogd.conf
    *.debug /var/log/debug.log
    Final two steps:
    issue
    sudo touch /var/log/debug.log
    and
    sudo killall -HUP syslogd
Then, try logging out and back in with a different usernameloginwindow, and check debug.log
and system.log on that client machine.

No offense taken. It is just that many people who post here only do so out of frustration and really only want to rant. They are unwilling to step back and take a more logical and reasoned look at a problem. I'm not going to bother reading rants, but I will be glad to help anyone who will meet me halfway.
However, I deeply dislike XCode, for numerous reasons:
I'm pretty ambivalent about Xcode. I've seen better and worse IDEs. It would probably be better if there were some competition around, but Metrowerks put themselves out of business.
Xcode certainly has its faults, but what you have described is not behavior that I have experienced or that I have ever heard about.
*This same exact project compiled fine on another computer (which unfortunately has been wiped clean)
I have to say I'm skeptical about this. How do I (or you) know that there wasn't some fix not checked in to SCM on the other machine? Or some change that didn't work but did wind up in SM?
*I'm able to build successfully on Leopard, just not my computer running Tiger. However, when I do the build on Leopard, it won't run on Tiger (I get missing link errors at runtime), even though I specify 10.4 as the target SDK.
One way to narrow down where the problem might be is to build a test application on each system and make sure that works properly. How do I know you aren't one of those people who tried to pick and choose which parts of Xcode to install? You must install all of Xcode.
How do I know you haven't tried to run one of those nasty apps like Monolingual that strips out resources that "you don't need"?
*When I do the build in Tiger with 'current operating system' specified as the SDK, I get a completely about 800 error messages.
That indicates that either your project or Xcode installation is completely broken. The first thing to do is find out which one of those it is.
When I specify 10.4 as the SDK (which seems to me like it should be the same behavior as 'current operating system', since the machine is running 10.4), I get about 3,000 error messages as stated in my original post.
Given that you don't seem to be able to build anything, trying a cross-platform built is unlikely to work better. The 10.4u SDK is for building a Universal binary (PPC and x86).
*It is very difficult for me to figure out where to change various settings, since some are at the project level, some are at the target level, and some are at the build configuration level. Sometimes when I double-click on a target to change its settings, I get a blank editable text area; other times I get a GUI with modifiable target settings. In other words, I find the UI to be extremely difficult to manage.
Those are certainly valid complaints. Once you get past this initial problem of building, it might be a good idea to post one or more new threads about how to use Xcode more effectively.
In fact, when I've had to change certain settings in the past, it's faster for me to modify the project file in a text editor than to hunt for that particular GUI widget.
Given that you seem uncomfortable with Xcode, this seems like a pretty dangerous thing to do. You could easily wreck your project so that it stops building for mysterious reasons.
I'm much more comfortable with Java and IntelliJ than I am with C++ and XCode, so I'm sure that is a big part of my problem, but my gut reaction to the problems that I'm having right now is "don't breathe wrong on XCode or it will stop working and you have to recreate the project". That is why I don't like it (to put it mildly).
You normally shouldn't have to recreate projects just to get Xcode working. However, that might be what you need to do in this case. If you can definitively prove that Xcode is correctly installed - by building a set of simple 10.4, 10.5 and 10.4u applications, then your project must be corrupted.
Again, I appreciate your help. I only posted this rant to explain my previous post, which I should have kept to myself.
I know how you feel. I got someone else mad at me in another thread when I called pthreads "pathetic"

  • I need a mac, but I dont know if I should wait for the new OS X 'leopard'

I dont have a mac yet, but I was looking at the new OS and the Time machine feature really caught my attention. Being a design student this could be the feature ive been waiting for. I just dont know I f I should wait for 'leopard' to be released or not. I really nee the computer now, but I dont want to pay extra to upgrade to 'leopard' later on. The web-site doesnt specify when It will be released, I was wondering If anyone knew If its a couple of weeks or months?
This would help me make an easier decision.
If anyone could give me some insight, that would be great.
    thanks.

    iMacs that shipped with
    Tiger still boot Jaguar
Bollocks! While they'll boot specifically compiled
versions of Darwin they will not boot Jaguar from a
boxed retail version or any version of Jaguar that
    came with a Mac.
the iMac G5 will simply not boot any version of
Jaguar that came from Apple retail.
Bollocks! is right , you're absolutely wrong. My iMac which came with Tiger still boots retail Panther quire easily.
The tiger I was referring to, on my MBP is the Darwin 10.3 version recompllied to suport Intel. Yes i agrre that a newer Intel based system won't boot an older PPC based DVD, I should hope not. But thats because of PPC vs Intel NOT some supposed policy from Mac
I'm not sure where you get anything to support your statements since from the time That Intel based macs shipped with Panther there was no retail version of Tiger available for Intel, since then there has been no release of a new OS X so where are you even geting your so called "facts" from? Prior to that we were talking about PPC based Macs which most definitely ran prior version, in fact my old Powerbook which shipped with Tiger runs Jaguar and 10.2 and 10.1 as well.
While not officially noted, not that I'm aware of at
least, this has been Apple policy for quite some
time. While sure, you can get a Mac to use many
things it wasn't "meant" to although that doesn't
    mean one should.
That's just plain wrong on so many levels..
So where are your use cases to support your made up policy?
{i] If you look back at each successive Mac OS X upgrade
from Jaguar and look at the systems that spanned the
release of the newer OS. In each case, even though
the hardware was exactly the same, those systems that
shipped with the newer OS failed to boot and install
from the discs of the exact same system that had the
older version OS. Yes there were a few that did
although once Apple manufacturing caught up with
itself, which was normally a week or two, they
    didn't.{/i]
Just wrong again, Yes maybe if the hardware has changed to support some new device in the new Mac. The only way that would be true as if you factored in the change from PPC to x86 architecture. I have several machines which run retail versions of OSx back to 10.2, some even 10.1 on boxes that shpiped with Jaguar or even Tiger. And there are no firmware blocks that limit that. That is what you claim
Give us some examples of this "supposedly unstated policy" you seem to think is in effect.
INo… because you're not correct through simply not
referring to Apple retail versions of Mac OS X and
moreso, the implications of such advice infers that
one has full support for older OSs where they do
    not
Bottom line… if you want a system that runs Mac OS X
Tiger then buy one that comes with it..
First of all I never said that one has full suport for all old versions of OSX. I said there is NO policy in Firmware that prohibits newer OSX based machines from running older versions of OSX. But I think you're just basically overlooking the fact that in the cases you cite there were probably actual hardware progressions that made older retail version not see newer hardware. It wasn't some mysterious Firmware blocking as you claim. It was pure hardware progression.
By the way, what if someone follows your advice,
waits for Leopard and finds they need Tiger and can't
install it? What are you going to do beyond shrug you
shoulders and say "not your problem"?
Uhhh, if you read my post, I never said to do what you seem to think I said. I merely asked YOU to cite an example of this "policy" and firmware blocking, which you haven't done yet BTW, cause I think you're wrong and I don't think its a policy to block, as you suggest, in firmware, a previous OS version for every new hadware version shipped with a new software version.
When Leopard ships on a C2D MBP you will not have to worry about that MBP not running retail Tiger. It certainly won't have some mysterious firmware block on booting Tiger after some mysterious two week period as you claim. Now if there is a NEWER revision with newer hardware that ships with Leopard there may be an issue with a currently available version of Tiger because it doesn't support the new hardware. It won't be , as you claim, some unstated policy manifested in firmware that prevents Tiger from installing.
So lets just end this here and now cause its a waste of people's time and my posts weren't claiming that if you need tiger don't buy a machine with Leopard on it, as you seem to think I was saying. What I said and stand by is this. There is no unwritten or written policy that has Apple blocking previous versions of its OS X in new hardware shipped with new software via firmware. Unless tha actual hardware contains devices that the prior version of OSX was unaware of. That's all I was pointing out. Somehow you stretched this into something completely different.

  • How update my hardware with Leopard Server 10.5

    Hello,
I have a older G4 1.25Ghz DP running Mac OS X Server 10.5 (10 Cli.) and doing his work fine... AFP, FTP, DNS, Open Directory & LDAP, iCal, Software Update, and Web services running ok.
Now I have a faster new Mac Pro and I want to replace my older G4, I think will be a procedure to migrate all my configurations in Apple way, sure ... It´s this possible?
I will apreciate very much your help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Felix

Unfortunately, Apple says there is no way to do this. According to them, the preferences and configurations, while on the surface are identical, somethings are different between PPC and x86 and cannot cross over. This holds true for Co-located Fail-Over Setups as well. I can believe that this is true as it is conceivable that some tings would not get 'upgraded' during the installation/upgrade and so there could be ppc code trying to run on an intel machine and making quite the mess to figure out what works and what does not...
Now having said that, when I go to an Intel setup, I will be doing the following: Mirror my current G5 system disk to the new macPro/xserve disk, and booting from DVD and trying to upgrade it. We here have nothing to lose and if it does not work/work well, I have to install fresh anyhow so it is only lost time, not lost data.

  • Xcode 3.1 from Xcode 2.4 - Symbols not found even though library is linked?

    Hello all,
I apologize in advance for what seem like a rather noobish question, but my Google-fu has failed me for a few hours now.
I have inherited an Xcode project that was developed 3 years ago for OS 10.3. It needs to be slightly updated and made to run on OS 10.4 and up (PPC and x86), but I can't get the project to compile; I am getting 18 errors about symbols not being found. The symbols in question are contained in a static library, and their function definitions are contained within header files that are included. I am using GCC-4.0 and am linking against the 10.4 SDK. I have included the proper search path for the library in my build settings, added it to my Libraries group and "Link Binary with Library" build phase multiple times, and confirmed that the proper header files are included.
I am unsure what my next step should be here; any advice or links would be most appreciated!

Okay, after running file on my library I get:
    [code]
my_library.a: current ar archive random library
    [code]
Does this imply that my library is not usable on both architectures? If so, how can I find out which architectures it will work on? I don't think I can get the original source for the static library to recompile.
    Thanks so much!

  • Encrypted dmg won't mount

Not sure where best to post this - admins -- if desired please feel free to move.
I created an encrypted .dmg file in disk utility to secure a small amount of info. I did a time machine backup of my machine, then did a clean install of OS X (getting ready to sell my mbp) and later tried to access the dmg on the time machine external drive. When I try to open the .dmg I am prompted for the password (this is NOT a forgotten password issue) and then I get the following error, "The following disk images couldn't be opened....no mountable filesystems"
I also did some searching on this and tried to do command line "hdiutil attach", and get the same no mountable file systems error.
I also tried entering the password and saving to keychain, but no results.
any help appreciated, extremely important info on this disk, thanks.....

Solved my own question with some more searching - the solution that worked for me is described here - step by step:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/52C5671CD2608532862575ED0001F1EC
and in case that link ever gets broken here's the copied text:
    Open Terminal.app (Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
Once the terminal opens, type 'cd'  without quotes.
Navigate to the folder that contains the .dmg file.  In this article the .dmg file is located on the desktop and is called LabVIEW.dmg
Click on LabVIEW.dmg once and hold the mouse button down.
Drag the mouse into the Terminal window, and then release the mouse button.  This will add a static link after the 'cd' command we typed earlier.  You should see something similar to this:
Delete the actual file name (in this case LabVIEW.dmg) so that only the file's folder path remains:
    Press the Enter key.
Type 'hdiutil attach LabVIEW.dmg -shadow'  without quotes.
(replace LabVIEW.dmg with the name of the .dmg file you're trying to mount).
The Terminal will pause briefly and then mount the .dmg file.
National Instruments only recommends using this solution for .dmg files that are read-only.  This is due to fact that a shadow image is created that contains any changes to the .dmg file.  Since all National Instruments .dmg files are read only this method will work without issue in Mac OS X.
