Precise movement and drawing of objects in CS6

Hi,
having used CS3 before, I've recently bought the CS6 package. I set all Preference settings they way they were in CS3 but I'm having difficulties moving a selected object in precise orthogonal (or diagonal) orientation. I'm used to seeing an "origin" alignment aid when I drag the object, usually at 0, 45, 90 or 180 degrees to its original position. This doesn't happen anymore in CS6, instead I get a myrad of alignment options to any other objects of anchors in sight, but not the important "origin" one. The same problem exists with the rotation tool - when I want to rotate an object quickly by 90 or 180 degrees, in CS3 I could just use the rotation tool and it would "click" into origin positions at 90 or 180 degrees. In CS6 I get an small window showing me the exact rotation degree, but to me it's pretty useless to know that I've just rotated the object by 179.6 degrees, but I can't get to the exact 180.
I am aware that I couold always use the Transformation option and enter a precise value of either moveemnt or rotation, but for simple actions it was much quicker to use a select and drag or select and rotate tool.
The pen tool is slightly better with the "origin" alignment aid, but still I get a lot more unwanted alignment options than before in CS3, distracting from quick and precise positioning of anchor points.
I do a lot of quite technical drawing, more akin to CAD than "free" illustration, but never had such a problem with Illustrator in CS3.
Is there a way to set up CS6 so it behaves the way I'm used to?
Best regards
Jeffrey Kubiak

Thanks, and bugger! I had no idea Smart Guides were changed that much - if it ain't broke, why fix it?
I've now read somthing about pressing teh shift key will bring up movement alignment in 45 degree increments. Pretty clumsy, as I often have the Alt key pressed as well when copying objects accross severy layers. I have Shift and Alt as the two buttons on the pen of my Intuos pad - I don't think I can press both at the same time (and even if I could it just makes things really awkward)...
Oh and btw. when I asked the question I wasn't aware that I was on a user forum - I thought I was writing to Adobe's customer service team! They did really well at disguising the path of getting in touch with them and thus making you guys do the work for them!
So sorry for not having much of a forum ettiquette in my very first posting.
Cheers
Jeffrey

  • I need to flip, move and duplicate a group in InDesign CS4 JS

    Hi,
    I need fo flip, move and duplicate grouped objects in InDesign. So far I have those lines from OMV:
    var myGroup2 = myGroup.duplicate ([".0625 in", myPageHeight/2]);
    myGroup.flip (Flip.HORIZONTAL, AnchorPoint.CENTER_ANCHOR);
    or
    myGroup.flipItem (Flip.HORIZONTAL, AnchorPoint.CENTER_ANCHOR);
    myGroup.move ([".0625 in", myPageHeight/2]);
    Those lines work for single object, and what I see in OMV, it should be the same for a group(?), but they don't work.
    Your help is highly appreciated.
    Yulia.

    I got it. The lines are correct, mistake was before the lines - in the group definition. Here what I got and it's working:
    var myArray = new Array;
    //Add the items to the array.
    myArray.push(myWhiteLine);
    myArray.push(myGreenLine);
    //Group the items.
    var myPage = app.activeDocument.pages [0];
    myLineGroup = myPage.groups.add(myArray);
    var myLineGroup2 = myLineGroup.duplicate ();
    myLineGroup2.flipItem(Flip.VERTICAL, AnchorPoint.TOP_RIGHT_ANCHOR);
    Thank you.

  • Drawing lines, rectangles and circles as objects onto a JPanel.

    Hi. I have to complete a task in school. The work is to create some simple 2D graphical editor. I'm new to java and I have some problems with this job, so I'm looking for help where it is possible...
    I created a JFrame and using it as a window. Into this JFrame I've added a toolbox (JToolBox) and "drawpad" - a JPanel. The toolbox wasn't any problem, but I aim to use the JPanel for drawing 2D objects. I tought about creating some container of objects, where I could put lines, rectangles or circles, each one with its properties (color, [x; y] coordinates on the scene, filling and drawing width) and then, draw this scene onto the JPanel.
    It should be something like windows Paintbrush. Can be simplier, but including the possibility to move and change properties of drawn objects.

    Well, there are two approaches to this that come to mind:
    1. Create an image. If this program is supposed to be like Windows Paint, the tools you are describing are only there for the sake of modifying a two dimensional image. In that case, I would recommend using a BufferedImage.
    The JPanel can contain a single JLabel. The JLabel is constructed in the following fashion:
    JLabel image_label = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(bufferedImage));...where bufferedImage is the image on which you will be storing the data. You can use bufferedImage.getGraphics() to get an object which will quite happily draw geometric shapes for you. Then, after each draw, you tell the panel to repaint itself.
    2. Store the shapes and create a component to draw them for you. You'd create a new JComponent class that would accept objects representing geometric shapes. You then override the paintComponent method on this new class to have it render itself according to the contents of the geometry objects. It would also probably be advisable to have all of these classes implement a common interface (which you would also create) so the rendering component could treat them identically.

  • Anchor points move and entire shape gets distorted from changing stroke thickness

    I have a fairly simple drawing that I drew at a larger size so I could be precise with it, and now I want to reduce it down to the finished size, and thicken the stroke, but when I make the stroke thicker, my anchor points move and the entire drawing gets distorted.
    In 24 years of using Adobe Illustrator, I've never seen this happen. When I click on the "up" arrow on the Stroke palette a bunch of times to incrementally increase the stroke thickness, I can watch the anchor points "walk" around as my shape gets distorted.
    If I instead enter a numerical value for the stroke thickness, this doesn't happen.
    However, if I use the Scale tool to shrink the drawing down to 10% or 20% size or whatever, with Scale Strokes and Effects UNCHECKED, again, the anchor points move and the drawing is distorted.
    This is all on a brand new installation of Illustrator CS 6 for Mac (though I've been using CS 6 for about 2 years now, my hardrive crashed this past weekend and I had to reinstall everything).
    Did I miss a little checkbox somewhere that I've never seen before that's making this happen?
    Editing this post to add:
    Also, some of the objects in my drawing will not allow me to change the stroke to less than 1 point thickness. If I choose .5 or .25 pt from the pop-up menu, or even if I enter the numerical value, it jumps back to 1 point. Other objects in the drawing do not.
    These objects in question are "rounded rectangle" shapes that I've used the scissor tool on to cut and then used the "join" command to put them together with parts of other shapes that were "scissored' as well.
    All of the "Ellipse" and "Rounded Rectangle" shapes that I left intact do not exhibit this problem with stroke and distortion.

    You are being bitten by the Align-to-Pixel-Grid. Select everything and go to the Transform panel and turn off Align-to-Pixel-Grid at the bottom of the panel; then go to the panel flyout (small triangle, upper right) and turn off Align Objects to Pixel Grid.

  • How do I move in specified increments in Photoshop CS6?

    I don't care about nudging or shift nudging...or free-hand dragging elements around.  In Photoshop CS5 I used to be able to select the move tool (V) hit (enter) a window would pop up and I'd type the incremental distance and hit (enter) again and the specified object or layer would move that increment.  I've seemed to have lost that ability in CS6 and I'm not finding any information on it.

    Gotcha.  You never used the (V) for move tool (enter) for (dialogue for x and y dimension box would pop up) then Type number for (x dimension) hit (Tab) Type number for (y dimension) then hit (enter) to confirm?  It just seemed to flow for me.  I never had to leave transform handels up or click in a corner then then click the left orientation box then drag select and change the number for x...then drag select change the number for y....I can get used to it.  If I had CS5 here I would take a screen capture of what I'm talking about....this will get me through just fine though.  Thanks for your patience and help!

    Close but no cigar.  I just want to draw a one pixel oval but what I get now is a thick oval.  How do I draw a simple line?
    Al
    Wouldn't a one pixel oval be just a dot? Or are you meaning to say you want to draw an oval that has a one pixel wide edge?
    If the latter, then select the oval marque tool, draw your oval, then stroke (edit> stroke) the selection with a one pixel stroke, using the color off your choice.
    To draw a simple line:
    • use the Pencil tool, set the thickness in the options bar. Click where you want the line to start, then move your mouse to where you want the line to stop and shift-click to draw a straight line to that end point. PS will connect the two points with the line. Or you can free hand the line - just click and draw.
    • use the Path tool to draw your line, then pick your brush tool, set the pixel size, pick the color you want as your forground color, then in the Paths pallete drop down, select stroke path and pick the brush tool.
    • use the Line tool, inside the shape tool box. Lots of options, just need to experiement.

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage-CS6

    CS6- updated 12\18\13  V-11.03
    Hi All,
    A few questions about:
    Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage. Bare with me as I touch on two different aspects of what I feel are related:
    1. Setting up a Comp-
    Having AE decide on the correct footage being used- Via >Import footage,.(to Folder) then drag it on, or into the 'make comp icon' where AE is supposed to do a 'best guess' for the comp settings. Be it square pix or otherwise. What are the second value in brackets ? See pic
    2. Interpolation-
    When using two diff footage sources- If using two different source footages in a comp. Is this where I should interplolate my footage to match the existing footage and the comp settings (If I have choosen NOT to pre-comp that secondary footage?)
    3. Seperating fields-
    How come footage that a camera manufacturer claims to be shooting in Progressive 30 or 24p is showing up as interlaced in my comp's CP? The manual to the cam says 30p or 24p or 60i The footage was shot at 30p (for sure)
    Here is a screen grab of AE's 'best guess' of that footage, showing it with an UPPER field render; indicative of HD Interlaced footage and then in the inerpolate settings - 'kinda confirming it.
    Now for the way out- Render:
    4. If that is in fact Interlaced and I then want to reduce the size of that 1920 footage to 66% size... Do I need to do anything in particular at this point?
    For some reason I am getting an error on my end when trying to export as an AVI and reducing size to 1280
    5. Is this from the Field render of interlaced challenge?
    I ended  up with a couple of errors and then aborted the whole file and re-imported to start over with this error. Which happend again after a redoux
    So I sent it over to Prem Pro to export those MTS Files as a movie and noted AGAIN the reference to Interlaced video. "upper and lower" Prem Pro was able to use the same MTS files and export a working movie. (so those files were not corrupt BTW) Yet Note PP's output reference to that footage again as Interlaced would be...
    Thanks for any clarity on those "5" questions... NC

    Thanks for the details Rick.
    Thanks for the insight on  #1
    Ref #2, You should never change the interpretation of Pixel aspect ratio on footage  unless you know for a certainty that it is wrong. For example, open Photoshop or Illustrator and create a new document that is 720  X 480 pixels and AE will always interpret the image as rectangular pixels because that is a standard rectangular pixel frame size.
    Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with rectangular pixels it is square pixels so the interpretation must be changed to avoid distortion.
    --Did you mean to write:
    Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with SQUARE pixels using  a rectangle layout?  I am not trying to bust your blz here, I am trying to understand the unknown. (for me)
    So it may very well be AE mis-guessing the footage and the Upper first is a mistake on AE's part and I need to test it to find out? On that note...
    Ref#3, Separating fields must be done right. Some 1080P footage is interpreted as having fields. This may be incorrect and if there is a question you MUST test the footage. Test the footage by making sure that the fields are being separated
    How do I make sure the fields are being seperated? Does the window as in pic two from the top of my post confirm that or is there another test?
    Then I do the following:
    then selecting the footage in the project panel and choosing Create Composition from Selection, then opening the Composition settings, doubling the frame rate and stepping through the footage a frame at a time. If the footage is really interlaced then each of the frames will be different.  (IE:  29.94 to 59.94fps) OK
    If the field order is reversed then motion will be in the right direction then reverse, then go back to the right direction. ---I did not understand?  Are you referring to Upper and Lower reverse?   Direction, as in fwd and back in Time line? Sorry unlclear on my end...
    Oh and HFR footage? HFR? High frame rate??
    One last thing, Do all cameras shoot anamorphic, or could they as AE is showing my MTS files; are Square? (1.00) Pic #1
    @Dave-  You -
    At 1080, a lot of footage is interlaced, and evidently your camera made interlaced footage
    Me- How do you know? because of the 2nd pic and upper field first indication?
    You-Even if you know for a fact that it was shot 30p, the camera captures the entire frame... but it records it as two fields. They give it a fancy name: Progressive Segmented Frame.
    Me- Is this typical false advertisement of the sales divison of brands like not telling you what CMOS or CCD is in a cam just slapping HD 1080p on the side of the box?
    You-AE will treat it as an entire frame if you interpret it as having a field order of None.
    Me- Won't that be a problem mis leading AE on an interpret?
    Thanks Gents for the precise details.

  • Move and Scale Action

    I have text moving from one place to another using the Move Action.
    The text itself is too small to really be able to read, so I'm looking for the best way to increase the size of the text (not necessarily scale as that will give me fuzzy text) from, lets say 5px to 20px, where it reaches 20px by the middle of the move, and then reduces back down to 5px by the end of its journey.  A pause in the middle may be nice too, but that's probably asking to much.
    In effect I'm trying to show
    Where the text is coming from
    What the text is
    Where the text is going to
    Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

    Welcome to the forum, and to the Mac!
    Combining actions and builds is pretty simple, and is done in the Build Order flyout drawer in the Action Inspector palette. Create your move action, then click the small "Add Action" plus sign at the bottom of the Action palette to add your scale action. When you add this action, the Build Order drawer will appear, listing the actions/builds for the slide. In order to combine actions/builds, you simply need to select an action and in the bottom "Start Build" drop-down menu choose "Automatically with build #" (where "#" is the prior build). After doing this, your object will move and scale simultaneously (and could also rotate and change opacity, if you wanted, as all these actions can be put together in any combination using this technique).
    This procedure is also how you get multiple objects to build in or out together. Playing with the time delay for the build (just below the "Start Build" dropdown) can also produce some very nice effects.

  • Read .txt file of numbers and draw

    Hello.
    I am trying to utlize BufferedReader and g.drawline to read numbers from a text file and output to the screen as a "line".

    Any help would be appreciated.

         //read data from the file
         String str=bufReader.readLine();
         g.drawLine(x1,y1,x2,y2);
         }

    Yep, you are right in deciding the positioning of the while loop.
    But the folly you are committing is while creating object of BufferedReader ... It is to be created by passing to the constructor, the reference of the FileReader object you have created.
    so the line of code shud look like ...
    BufferedReader bufReader = new BufferedReader(FileReaderObject);
    And then you can go ahead with readLine() as per your requirement in the while loop.

  • What are your preferred word processing and drawing apps?

    I currently use LibreOffice for most purposes, because it has both word processing and drawing software built-in, because it can read many file formats, without as much trouble as most other office suites. Unfortunately, while it can import AppleWorks word-processing documents, it can't import drawings, spreadsheets, etc., and while it can import older Word word-processing documents, it tends to corrupt the tables, the fancier quotes, etc. Also unfortunately, it does not work well with speech-to-text/dictation, not that dictation works well. Also unfortunately, it sometimes screws up imported images.
    I try to minimize formatting to avoid that in the future.
    I used to use Appleworks for most purposes, but it isn't supported anymore.
    I tried TextEdit, but it doesn't allow me to save different versions of the same document, or a new document based on an old document, it screws with page margins, and it doesn't have drawing software. I used to use Word, and at one point used Pages, but there are all sorts of issues with their file formats and incompatibilities between different versions.
    I would like a functional but not excessively fancy word-processing and drawing tool, and either as part of that, or in addition to that, a suitable version comparison tool. I draw a lot of maps, so the drawing program has to respect scale, and I have coordination problems, so it has to make it easy to put the right object in the right place. I've had trouble with that in LibreOffice.
    So in general, what word processing and office suite software do you think works for your needs, or would work for my or other people's needs?

  • Mapping and querying Custom Objects for a Contact with REST Api

    Hello All,
    We are hoping to get some details on managing DataCard set through REST APIs. Our implementation goal is to create Contacts and add Custom object for each Contact, or to be precise, add a DataCard Set for each Contact.
    At the moment, to associate a DataCard Set (or Custom Object) to an existing contact, we are supplying following custom object fields during creation of Custom Object:
    new CustomObjectField
                                                                    name = "MappedEntityType",
                                                                    dataType = Enum.GetName(typeof(DataType), DataType.numeric),

                                                                    defaultValue = "0"
                                                             new CustomObjectField
                                                                    name = "MappedEntityID",
                                                                    dataType = Enum.GetName(typeof(DataType), DataType.numeric),
                                                                    type = "CustomObjectField",
                                                                    defaultValue = "<ContactId>"
    Is this the correct approach? This is Based on the information provided here: http://topliners.eloqua.com/community/code_it/blog/2012/05/31/eloqua-api-how-to-mapping-a-data-card-to-an-entity.
    Would the REST API allow us to query the CustomObjects using the MappedEntityId value for later updates? If so, any pointers on how we approach that?
    Thanks in ad.

    Either the MappedEntityID field is not available or I do it wrong, Eloqua is ignoring the field and does not map the custom record with the unique Contact ID

  • Where we can use standard ODS Object and Trasactional ODS Object ?

    Where we can use standard ODS Object and Trasactional ODS Object ?

    Hi,
    In a standard ODS object, data is stored in different versions (active, delta, modified), whereas a transactional ODS object contains the data in a single version.  Therefore, data is stored in precisely the same form in which it was written to the transactional ODS object by the application. In BW, you can use a transaction ODS object as a data target for an analysis process. The transactional ODS object is also required by diverse applications, such as SAP Strategic Enterprise Management (SEM) for example, as well as other external applications.Transactional ODS objects allow data to be available quickly. The data from this kind of ODS object is accessed transactionally, that is, data is written to the ODS object (possibly by several users at the same time) and reread as soon as possible.
    It offers no replacement for the standard ODS object. Instead, an additional function displays those that can be used for special applications.

  • (bug?)Movie clip contains an object with a z value will not edit the object in place, it goes into a seperate window.

    When a movie clip contains an object with a z value, I can not edit the object in place, it goes into a seperate window.
    This changes the vanishing point relative to the movieclip instead of the stage (allong with everything else).
    This makes it very hard to keep track of where the movieclips will end up when actualy playing the animation.

    I should have explained my situation a little better. I have a machine that's made up of a number of parts, some of them are fairly large and some are quite small. When a user clicks on a part, I want to center that part on the screen and then move whole machine toward the screen until the selected part either fills the screen (for the larger parts) or the part bumps up against the front clip plane (for the smaller parts).
    I didn't think of checking for a collision with the ViewPlatform's TG, thanks for mentioning that. I wasn't sure how the ViewPlatform's location relates to the clipping plane, but I'll dig into it. I'm still learning how the ViewingPlatform, the image plate, and the clipping planes all relate to each other.

  • Utility or script "each clip = new movie and let media file = name"

    I've found out that if I want to split a clip at the playhead and make it a new AS-IS original with a unique media file name designation; I have to go through:
    file>export> as full quality movie > check the "selected clips only " box > copy and paste the name and then designate destination folder> CLICK and then wait until done. (Thank you Karl)
    Unfortunately, completing this process with 180 clips per project x 15 to 20 projects per quarter... well it was more than I was prepared to do.
    Therefore... is there anyone out there who could (or has already) program(ed) some kind of script/utility/add-on that would create a new AS-IS clip from each clip that was "split at the playhead" and ALSO, make those final clips as well as every other existing clip in the project have its media file designation the same as its name.
    ie "each clip = new full quality movie and let its media file = name."
    This would save me around 10 hours per week.

    Karsten is correct. iMovie itself does not support AppleScript.
    But for applications that don't support AppleScript, Apple offers a "System Events" AppleScripting alternative. It lets an AppleScript script use System Events to do things in OTHER applications. It can act on window objects, like click on a button. Theoretically, System Events can do just about any task in iMovie.
    Except, unfortunately, select a clip.
    That's right, there is no way to select a clip with a script. So a script can't control which object to act on. YOU have to select the clip manually. That's not an insurmountable problem, but it does mean you can't tell the script to export every clip in the Timeline.
    Probably the easiest way to do what you want is with QuicKeys, the third-party software that lets you define tasks, then assign a key to perform that task. Just about any task you can imagine. One kind of task is a macro to perform a series of actions. QuicKeys lets you record macros in any application. Its record function makes macro-writing pretty easy.
    (QuicKeys is one of those utilities I wouldn't be without. I use QuicKey keys hundreds of times a day for repetitive tasks.)
    Back to AppleScript. Theoretically, QuickTime Player Pro can do what you want. QuickTime Player is VERY scriptable.
    Here's the trick: Each time we save the iMovie project, iMovie updates the "Timeline Movie.mov" that's inside the Cache folder (inside the project package). When iMovie saves, it sets the selected frames of that movie to match the selected clip in the TimeLine. When you open the "Timeline Movie.mov" in QuickTime Player, the selected video/audio matches the clip selected in iMovie.
    So after you select a clip in iMovie, an AppleScript could save the iMovie project (to update the Timeline Movie), open the Timeline Movie in QuickTime, Copy the selected frames, Paste them into a new movie, then save the new movie.
    Back to QuicKeys. QuicKeys can work across multiple applications just like an AppleScript. So theoretically you could run part of a macro in iMovie and another part in QuickTime Player. And, if I recall, QuicKeys can run AppleScript scripts.
    What you REALLY want is an application that knows how to read iMovie project files and automatically exports each clip to its own movie.
    Maybe I'm missing some simple work-around. That'd be sweeeeeet!
    Yup. Sometimes the best solution is to avoid the problem, not solve it.
    We can export a project to the camera, then re-import it to a new iMovie project. When we do, most clips on the Timeline return as discrete clips. Clips like titles will not be editable, of course.
    That is best done early on, before we add titles, transitions and such. Import the newly-shot video, do a rough edit to get rid of the stuff you don't want, export the Timeline to the camera, re-import to a new project. All the junk will be gone and now each clip is a discrete clip with its own source file. NOW add titles and such.
