Premerie Elements 11 and  NEX 6 Video: Bad aliasing with imported footage

Hi,
with all my Sony NEX 6 AVCHD settings iam unsuccessfull to get good quality video in Premiere Elements 11. Only exception is 1080 50p, that is working with good quality but seams to be an overkill as it eats up SD space and is exhausting the MAC. Interlaced modes are yielding bad aliasing and the 25p mode is missing in the PAL AVCHD section.  The Nex can take full hd 1080 25p but in Adobe settings in the AVCHD section there is no 25p at full hd. That does exist in the DSLR section though, but also this gives aliasing (?).
Iam also puzzled about the setting that reads 1080 25i in APE11 (PAL) and 1080 50i in the Sony NEX. I just assume both are just the same (Sony does count every half frame and Adobe every full frame made of two halfs).
Iam using an iMAC with AMD Radeon HD 6770M
Anybody is using films from Sony NEX6 in APE11 or has a way out?
Thnks
Hardi

Steve,
thanks for your reply. Iam preparing for a Safari trip next month. Iam undecided in whtat format to output the video, DVD or MPEG most likely and best quality for watching on the Mac. For now Iam just importing mini clips to see how it works and what the quality is. This is to decide in what format, resulution and frame rate I should take the safari video. Iam particular checking for "jumps" in fast movements, i.e. how smooth the video looks and those "steps" in straight lines that I call (perhaps falsly) aliasing. For this I check the Premiere preview of the imported clips. Perhaps its my bad English, so I try to give my workflow:
1) I do short films (20s) with my NEX6 in those 3 settings 1920x1080 PAL, 50p, 50i and 24p. I make sure there is lot of movement and sharp lines do show up. I do one clip at a time.
2) I take out the SD card (64GB 45Mbits/s) after each individual setting and put it into the iMacs SD slot. Also tried to hook up the NEX via USB cable but no difference noticed.
3) I open finder and go to the private folder of the SD card. In each try there is just one AVCHD clip in.
4) In Organizer I choose import from files and folders and click on that private folder. None of the formats will be imported, always a note shows up that its either wrong format or already existing file (I made sure this is not).
5) In Premiere I can import the privat folder via drag and drop directly from the SD in a new project. This way I let premiere decide what project settings to choose. All formats give a warning (codex not available or something, warning is different from the Organizer one) but it does the import anyway in each case. Imported film does look "aliased" with 50i and 25p footage. Project settings for the two read 1080 25i. The imported film does look good with 50p, correct project setting in this case: 1080 50p.
6) In Premiere I can also import via "add media, AVCHD camera".  Again I do this in new projects for each of the clips. Also here Premiere decides what setting the clip gets. Import does not produce warnings with either clip format. Nevertheless, imported film does look "aliased" with 50i and also 25p clip. Settings in both cases again are 1080 25i (thus Premiere thinks the 25p clips is a 25i). Also here the clip does look very good with 50p and the project setting is for 50p.
Hope this describes it somewhat better.

I no longer have access to system folders that allow me to remove old or incorrect PAGES templates. Need to find out how to do that. The only way I can do it now is to blank the template and replace the unwanted template with a blank. It was previously possible to go to MY TEMPLATES and remove the unwanted templates. I don't if this issue is before or since installation of 10.8 (a nightmare in my case, which led to significant failure issues).  And because I haven't tried to remove templates since finally managing to install 10.8 (now at 10.8.4), I don't know if this is typical of the newer OS or a problem. I've been a Mac user for more than 25 years, but I think I'm nearing the end of the road. By the way, I've never needed to do this before because the manuals always offered an answer... they don't seem to do that anymore. In any case, I don't know how this works... I'd prefer an email reply if that's possible. But that would probably be too easy, and I don't know how to get a reply.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.  I think this is one of the problems Apple is creating by changing the OS so often. I had fomer colleagues at [a major aerospace contractor] who told me that so many original files were ultimately lost because of the deadly change in the "Save As" operation that they are now afraid of every OS update. Apple has badly damaged their support base with that very prominent company (they won't update now until they've fully examined and understand changes in the pre-conditioned nature of OS computer functions), and they are a whole lot less enthaled with Mac-related equipment/software. Can't blame them, I too used orginal files that way (as easy-to-use templates), and lost some important files before I realized what was happening (to late to revert). Companies should not have to retrain employees each time an OS gets an update, it's can be very expensive several different ways. They learned a painful lesson with that one. And because I'm now retired and don't use multiple devices, I need iCloud like I need a hole in the head... but I'm told there's no way to keep Apple out of my computer. Fortunately, because of major problems when initially installing Mountain Lion, one hold-over of the hardware/software damage I experienced was that iCloud can no longer access my computer even though everything else is working fine again. That was the only "good luck" I had as a result of that expensive nightmare.

  • Photoshop Elements 7 Slideshow Pan & Zoom issues with imported pictures

I am using PSE7 on a Windows XP machine. When I create a slideshow, I have the default set to pan and zoom the pictures. If I add pictures that are already in my catalog, it works great and will apply a random pan and zoom to each of the pictures. If, however, I add a picture from a folder and choose pictures that are not already in my catalog, it will add the picture to the slideshow but will not apply a pan and zoom to it (even though I said that it should). I can then manually add it, but it is not random, it always uses the same pan and zoom for each picture. In my most recent project, I had over 100 pictures I added to a slideshow that were not in my catalog. They all imported into the slideshow, but had no pan and zoom even though I had the option selected. I then selected all the slides, applied pan and zoom, and they all ended up with the exact same pan and zoom - nothing random. I really wasn't in the mood to manually change all 100+ pictures pan/zoom features. So, I created a new catalog, imported the pictures into the catalog, then created the slideshow, and it worked fine. Then, since I don't want those photos in a catalog, I delete the catalog. A lot of extra steps for something that I think should work no matter if you are importing files from the catalog or files from a folder. Or am I just doing something wrong?

    Paul,
Since I do catalog photos which I will be using a slide show, I guess that I may never experience this bug. I am curious about whether there is any difference in the behavior depending on whether these photos are from a digital camera or scanned photos?
Howeer, I do agree with your conclusion that since the slide show does support adding photo files (that are not in the Catalog) directly from their folder location into the slide show, it should apply random pan and zoom consistently.
Here is a link to the process to report that bug to Adobe -

  • Premiere closing unexpectedly with imported footage

My Premiere Pro shuts down every time I attempt to play imported footage on the Source and Program Monitor.
I am using a Macbook Pro, OS X 10.8.5. Processor is 2.6 GHz with 3/4 of my memory empty. I have a Canon T5i, but am importing footage from my SD card to my 2TB hard drive. All footage is not raw, and is in 1080p.
I updated Premiere Pro from the Creative Cloud with no changes.

  • 'Source play' and 'audio-video sync' problems with PE8 on fast WIN7 64 bit computer

I am transferring Hi8 videos, about 2 hours long, to my WIN7 64 bit computer with PE8.  [Dell Mobile Precision M4400 Computer Workstation (Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 500GB/4GB); NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M, 512MB] I seem to have several problems:
First, after importing the file (.avi), I get a message about ‘dropped frames.’
Secondly, when I try to play the video in the source monitor, the audio plays but the video doesn’t; it only shows the first frame [this is after waiting until the video is ?recognized? ]   I can use the shift-arrow key and see that the video is there.
Thirdly, I can play the .avi file in other players, e.g., avidemux or PE pro CS5 on another computer.  There, I see that the audio and video are not in sync; the audio can be up to 300 ms ahead of the video (as determined using avidemux).
    Questions:
    1.  Why doesn’t the source monitor play the video? Is this a problem with PE8 (latest update as of 3 March 2011) on aWIN7 64 bit computer (intel duo core. 3 GHz).
    2. Is the audio-video sync problem the result of the ‘dropped frames?’ How can PE8 correct this? Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence?

"I think you're telling me you're using a backwards compatible Digital8  camcorder to capture your video as DV-AVIs. Is that right?" YES
"Are you using  Premiere Elements to do this capturing?" YES, AS ABOVE PE8
"Go to the File menu and select Properties. It should show a standard DV codec being used for your video and audio."
WMP v12 is dumb. Under properties, media, it says 'video.'  However, avidemux gave me the information state above: video -- Codec 4CC: dvsd, frame rate: 29.971 fps; audio -- codec: PCM, channels: Stereo, frequency: 48 kHz.
    So, back to the Questions:

  • Aliasing with progressive footage in a progressive timeline

    Anyone ever experience this?
I've rendered out some 1080p Sheer codec source spots... down-converted them to 480p widescreen DVCPRO50 through QuickTime Pro. They look flawless in the QuickTime player. Obviously no fields. Pristine.
Now... when we take the DVCPRO50 footage into FCP. Create a timeline that matches the footage identically (30p 16:9 anamorphic DVCPRO50)... on playback there is all this weird aliasing going on.
Double-checked the footage..... it's definitely 480p. Zero fields. Definitely 29.97... FCP Pro file information shows it is reading it as 29.97progressive. No pulldown.... Sequence is absolutely solid. 29.97.... no fields... and yet on playback we get this weird aliasing like it has fields. Similar, but not quite exactly like watching interlaced footage in a progressive timeline.
Playback is through the Blackmagic Decklink Studio video card. Double-checked all hardware and user settings. All are as they should be....
What the hades is going on?
    Much help would be appreciated...
    Doug

Rather than downconverting with QT, try Compressor with with Frame Control, Resize Filter set to Best.
    *Doug Stringham wrote*:
+Only when it comes into FCP does it look wonky.+
Are you sure that you don't have a footage/sequence settings mismatch? No rendering required?
Are you viewing at 100% in the canvas?
Are you viewing externally on a broadcast monitor?

  • Image quality from DV footage has bad aliasing after import

Had to shoot DV footage with the Pana HVX-200, and shot at 480i-30p. Footage looks excellent during playback, but once imported into iMovie '08, the footage in playback has horrible alias "swim"
lines. Is this just a function of playback or is this how the video was captured? I tried both 30fps and 25fps in capture, but same result in both. Don't want to proceed with entire project if it's going to look like that. PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi JW and welcome to the RH community.
You are testing my memory here, but I think if you import the
original HPJ file rather than the HLP file, you can choose what
format your BMP files are converted into.
There is no mass way of resizing images. Use RH inbuilt
Resize tool - available in the Tools tab - for resizing images. I
find it by far and away the best tool for the job.

  • Help with importing footage correctly with Sony Camera

I have a Sony HDR SR 11 camera that records in AVCHD codec at 1920 X 1080i HD. When I import the m2ts files into Premiere they will get choppy in the time line and the footage breaks up digitally.  No matter what setting I choose it does not import them. Does anyone know if Premire supports this codec? Sony is clueless when it comes to this stuff.
I have to actually render the thing in Sony Vegas Platinum and THEN import it into Premiere if I want it to work that way. Any suggestions?

    Hello All,
Sigh, well it's just not working well for me lol
I have rendered this several times. I got one to work, but I want to change my background color. I am trying to alter my size down to 1280x720 without getting any black bars on the video and I cannot render to flash as I need a different file type. Blu ray worked, but I forgot it separates the audio and that is not good to me.
Below is a jpg with the dsitorition around the face and a rendered clip with no sound of the max headroom effect. I rendered with the upper field first so I do not know why I got this error.
I thought this might be easier than you all downloading.

I will try to render again in the mean time. Even reducing the  bit rate makes my 8 min video take 3 hours.

  • I'm using a 1D Arrary with 27 different elements and would like to send those data over UDP Write and UDP Read functions.

I'm using a 1D array with 27 different elements. I would like to transfer that data over a UDP connection, and read it back by using UDP connections.
But I would like to read 3 elements at a time (On read side) and send those to 9 different ports.
Note: the data will go to only one PC with one Network Address)
    * 1st elements (0,1,2) and send to port #XXX to see those 1st 3 elements.
    * continue until the elements reaches up to 27
This is what I have done but I'm finding myself in pitfalls...
    Send side:
I'm using a UDP Open connection on send side to send my data. So with selected a Source Port, I have created a UDP Op
en connection. Im using only one source port to send all the data across the channel. I would like to read 1st 3 elements and send those data across with an assigned Destination port. I would like to do that for 9 times b/c there are 27 elements in the array. So Im using a For Loop and setting N count to 9. So Im not getting any errors when I execute and no answer on the other side at all.
    Read side:
Im using a UDP Open connection to read in the data with port #. Im using while loop to with Boolean inside by making a true all the time. Inside that While loop, Im using For Loop to read the 3 elements data a time and send to a right port address. (As start out I was just trying to see if it works for only one port).

You are not getting any errors because UDP is a connectionless protocol. It does not care if anyone receives it. Your example will work fine with the following considerations.
    (1) Don't use the generic broadcast address (255.255.255.255).
    (2) You are listening on port 30000. So why are you sending to port 1502, nobody will receive anything there.
The destination port of the outgoing connection must match the server port of the listener. (The source port is irrelevant, set ot to zero and the system will use a free ephemeral port).
    (3) On the receiving side, you are not indexing on the received string, thus you only retain the last received element. Then you place the indicator outside the while loop where it never gets updated. :-(
    (4) Do yourself a favor and don't micromanage how the data is sent across. Just take the entire array, flatten it to string, send it across, receive it, unflatten back to array, and get on with the task.
(You can do the same with any kind of data).
I have modified your VI with some reasonable default values (destination IP = 127.0.0.1 (localhost)), thus you can run both on the same PC for testing "as is". Just run the "read" first, then every time you run "send", new data will be received.

I have been using Firefox for about two years. For about a month now I have been unable to view any Google advertisements that run on YouTube pages alongside and under videos. This is important for my business. I would like to stay with Firefox, but this is only a problem when I use Firefox and is not a problem with Internet Explorer or Google Chrome as I checked. I tried uninstalling Firefox and all plugs ins and add ons and then reinstalling it. This did not work. Firefox seems to be blocking the Google codes that enable the ads to run on the pages. I look forward to your help. Thank you.

CS2 is very old and reached its "end of life" a while back.  So probably won't run on modern operating systems.  If you can still run it, you'll need to uninstall what you have and re-install with the download link below to activate it.

  • Catalogue of SQL and PL/SQL bad practices: Call for participation

I started compiling a list of Oracle SQL and PL/SQL bad practices, with the intention of producing a comprehensive catalogue of common and recurring programming mistakes, that can be used as a check-list for code reviews or given to junior developers. I have identified about 30 bad practices so far. For each bad practice, I provided a list of symptoms in the code, an explanation why it causes problems and a list of preferred solutions.
My goal with this list is primarily to start a discussion about similar recurring issues that other people have noticed. That discussion should lead to a more complete list which the community will then be able to use, hopefully, to learn something from the mistakes of others and to produce better code.
I would really appreciate your feedback - if you are interested in discussing these practices we can either do it in this forum, or start a separate mailing list.

exception handler (already covered), the philosophy
behind not using stored procedures, and having beenHi riedelme,
I'm not advocating not using stored procedures, but I am advocating not using exclusively stored procedures. I've seen that approach often, typically with people coming from SQL server or Oracle forms backgrounds, I never could understand the reasons behind it. Even for a simple select or update, they would write a stored proc that wraps the call and then require the client to execute a stored proc.
I think that views are much better for getting the data out of the database in general, and forcing people to use stored procedures with ref output cursors makes little sense. If the only possible interface is a stored proc, then one proc must be created for every required combination of data and every required filtering or grouping method, so there is much much more code in the database, and more code means harder maintenance.
If client apps can get data out using views, then they can join them with other views, filter or group the data as they require, which means that there is a lot less code in the database to maintain.
My other problem with stored-proc only approach is when people wrap simple insert/update/delete commands into a stored proc. Again, I'm not advocating using complex instead-of triggers to implement workflows and forcing people to use views, but I simply don't see any benefit of implementing a stored proc to do a simple update. I see a bad side of it because a stored proc needs to be implemented for every combination of columns that a client may need to update and every criteria that can be used for that. If a client is allowed to update a view, there is much less code in the database.
Views are, in my experience, also a lot easier to maintain and optimise without downtime because they can be revalidated without causing any problems to currently connected clients, where revalidated stored procedure or package will throw an exception the first time a connected client that had called it before calls it again.
If I'm missing something, please tell me. I'd really love to understand why someone would build a client API exclusively from stored procedures.
So far, I've been given explanations that it is for security purposes, or for performance. I don't know of any security restriction that can be implemented on a stored procedure or package that cannot be implemented with a view, and if bound variables and statement caching is used, sql statements don't suffer from sql injection and support pre-compilation.
Again, i'm not advocating throwing stored procs completely out, i'm against using them exclusively and throwing out any chance of SQL access.

  • Removal of 'older' versions of Elements and Premiere from CPU

Can I safely remove 'older' versions of Photoshop Elements and Premiere or do they share important resources, files, .dlls, etc.? I am currently running PSE 10 and PRE 10 and would like to remove PSE 2 and PSE 7 and PRE 7 to free-up hard-drive space.

  • Importing HD to mix with SD footage.

    Hi,
I just got an HDV camera today (Sony FX1) and I have a wedding to film this weekend, so I'm kind of learning as much as I can right now both about filming with this camera and editing in FCP. (I've used FCP for a couple of years, but this is my first experience with HD.)
I'm currently using Final Cut Pro HD 4.5.
I plan to shoot the wedding with the FX1 as my front (main) camera and film in HDV. I am going to use a Canon GL2 as a second camera.
When downconverting to SD for editing, it looks as though the video from the FX1 will have black bars at the top and bottom - something I don't mind, but my customer may have questions about.
    1) Will it be odd to mix footage from the FX1 that has been downconverted to DV with standard DV footage from the Canon GL2? Is there a way to import the footage (anamorphic, or whatever) so that there are no bars? Or, what is the correct setting for importing into FCP? Again, the bars don't bother me and if they have to be there, I can tell the customer that in the future I'll deliver it to them in HD.
    2) When I do edit for HD, will it look odd when switching between the FX1 and GL2? I don't mind the GL2 having bars on the side.
I guess my overall question is: What's the best way to import footage into FCP 4.5 when using HDV, and are the bars going to be there no matter what if I deliver the final video in standard DV? Again, the bars don't bother me, I'm just worried about how the customer will view this.
    Thanks,
    - John

I deal with similar issues with legacy 4x3 Beta SP mixed with HD quite a bit. I'm speculating, as I have not had to mix HDV and DV yet, but this is how I would try to deal with it were I in your shoes.
You can put both in a time line, but it will be painful to edit this way. One or the other will need to be rendered, and the actions you take with the footage will cause you to have to render again. And again. And again. No Joy.
I would look for a down convert with edge crop from the camera. This will chop off the edges of your HDV frame. As mentioned above, this might have a different name, but the key is to get footage that is of the same format (DV) and aspect ration (4x3) as your GL footage. Edit in DV.
You could import it 16x9 (black bars on top and bottom as you say) DV, blow it up so the black bars go away, and then slide it back and forth in the canvas with the motion controls in order to adjust the framing. Indeed you might have to do this if you did not shoot with 4x3 safety in mind. This is called "pan and scan" and it is how movies shot wide screen were squeezed onto our 4x3 TVs. If you have to do this your HDV footage will look quite poor. Down conversion and then scaling up is not good JuJu.
But, if you can't find a way to play the hdv footage out DV 4x3 center cut, or crop or whatever your camera calls it, you might be forced into this scenario.
You might try capturing the HDV the footage natively in a separate project. Drop this on a DV sequence. It will appear as a 16x9 image (black bars on the top and bottom.) Double click to load in the viewer and click the motion tab. The scale parameter will be at less than 100 percent. Scale it up until the black bars go away and your percentage is a round even number. Then export as self contained Quicktime movie. Name it HDV to 4x3DV. Reimport this into the DV project with your GL footage where you plan to edit.
This avoids the scaling issue and does the down convert in FCP. I suspect this will look better than the alternative, but I have not tried it.
    Hope this helps.
    Best,
    Tom

  • Converting 24p to NTSC 30 fps with existing footage already captured

Working on a project that should have come to me downconverted to NTSC 30fps. I already have footage that was shot DVCPro 24p and have started working (selecting) with the footage. We would like to shoot our remaining footage downconverted in-camera to NTSC 30fps.
So - I'm curious if FCP allows you to convert material that's already been captured.
    Thanks

You'd need to use the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com.
$100 but worth it. It also converters 30 to 24, and PAL to NTSC, and vise versa.
